  • Case 292: Monster of the Andes
** Content warnings: Child abuse, child victims, sexual assault **
In the late 1970s, young girls along the Andes mountain range in Ecuador began to disappear. By 1980, the number of missing girls had reached national crisis proportions. Police feared the girls had been abducted by international child traffickers and sold into domestic and sexual slavery. That was until a vigilant market vendor spotted something out of the ordinary.

I understand that authorities have to work within the parameters of their laws, but it still boggles my mind that so many were so hesitant to rid society of such evil when for so long everyone was terrified and knew all too well that someone or something was snatching their youth. It baffles me how the minds of 'do gooders' work. Why don't they ever want to 'do good' for the victims?? I was sorry that the locals who hog tied him and covered him in honey didn't get the chance to complete their mission. That would have been justice.

Part of this issue seemed to be no one wanting to take responsibility for him or recognize the darkness in him. I feel many who are innocent have received much, much harsher punishment so it really begs the question of why did everyone feel the need to be so lenient with him? I appreciate those that want to see the light in someone but this person did not seem to have any redeeming qualities and showed that he intended to do it again when given the chance.

I'm so outraged that he was just declared sane and released without any supervision or anything. Or, you know, punishment.
Also, I bet if the children he murdered had been the kids of rich families or some of the white tourists he was following at one point, justice would have been much harsher and there would not have been so much leniency. We already saw how police wrote off the poor girls as runaways, they were already at a disadvantage to be taken seriously by the system.
