- Case 272: The Annecy Shootings
On September 5 2012, a cyclist driving through the French Alps came upon a shocking scene. Married couple Saad and Iqbal al-Hilli, along with Iqbal’s elderly mother Suhaila al-Allaf, were shot execution-style while sitting in their BMW in a secluded parking spot in the woods surrounding Chevaline. 7-year-old Zainab al-Hilli clung to life on the ground nearby, while 4-year-old Zeena al-Hilli was nowhere to be seen. A local cyclist, Sylvain Mollier, was also fatally shot in the brutal killing spree.
An international investigation quickly raised more questions than it did answers. What were the victims doing in this isolated area? Had they been targeted as part of some sinister activity, or were they killed at random by a lone psychopath?

Wow! I've been listening to 4 much older episodes today whilst driving and I never thought I'd catch an episode this early. When I started it had been out for 32 minutes and now that I'm finally in bed I can listen to it properly. I have been binging on your episodes for weeks now and I really don't bother posting comments on the older episodes but I just want to take a moment to commend you on your research and your narration which as a fellow Australian I love immensely. Please continue doing what your doing because it's such quality content and I've only got another 150 or so videos to go! Much appreciated. From country NSW Australia.
They are to good hey! I dud the same and binged out on all their episodes also. Can't listen to any other true crime!
I thought I was the only one who listened to older episodes waiting for a new one. 😂
Colleen Stan podcast is a tough one to listen to if you haven't already..
But yes, quality content...
Canadian here, I have a lot of respect for this podcast and the narration is top tier. You put what I wanted to express into words.
Mm 😂q🎉🎉🎉😂q
🎉qtq❤k😂e
Ahw❤
I loved the format of this. With every theory I was like, "Aha!! So that's what happened! But wait..." and then it would fizzle out only for a new theory to be introduced where again I could be like, "aha!!! This is surely the one!!! But waaaait..."
It felt very authentic to investigating, even though I'm sure that's not how police actually do it.
I'm glad both girls survived. I hope they live and value each other and someday find justice.
I still can't believe it took the police 8 HOURS to realize there was a little girl still alive hiding in the car? what????
Local police didn’t want to disturb the crime scene. Didn’t open the doors. Quick glance in the car but didn’t notice the girl.
As the other response mentioned, they were preserving the scene, and the girl didn’t make a peep.
The killer didn't see her. The British cyclist didn't see her. The other witness the British cyclist took with him back to the scene didn't see her. The rescue team didn't see her. Why would the police see her while they were not allowed to disturb the crime scene.
BAY-MW.......😬🤭
French cops are rubbish ..... not in the same league as the UK cops ....It took the French cops nearly ONE year to find the passports of the victims ....They found the passports in the POCKET of one of the victims ... I think the - Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies are probably NOT works of FICTION ...but are real life documentaries of French Police ....
Thorough case analysis.
Very detailed, in chronological order. Clear narration
Agenda setting true crime
What I appreciate VERY MUCH is that the narrator is a real voice, not ai. I don't listen to ai podcasts and if I had subscribed, I unsubscribe. And thumbs down. Good job anonymous narrator. Love your podcast
There are still clues that point to the narrator being AI.
@@roadwarrior528 What?? You must be new because everyone knows Casey is a real person. Check out his interview!

So has it always been “Your way or the highway?” There are many reasons why someone might use an ai voice.
@@moyamontgomery1468 And there are so many reasons someone might choose not to listen to a channel with an AI voice.
I just came across your channel a few days ago and have already watched around 10 videos. And this one was really griping from start to finish. So many intriguing theories about who was the target and why, none of which ever amounted to anything. It’s almost unbelievable that after all these years, with so many people investigating the case, that police aren’t any closer to solving it then they were on day 1. Truly a tragic yet fascinating case. Great channel and content by the way. Excellent narration and story telling. Cheers!
Check out thr batavia episode!!
I would squirrel money away in a Swiss account too if i had any money to squirrel.
LOL!! Truer words were never said!!! I'm right there with you!😛🤑💯
Wouldn't we all?
Hahah!! Wouldn't we all?!?! 😂
You kind of think that checking the pockets would’ve been one of the first things they had checked
Fav true crime channel.
Voice is awesome for narrating.
I agree! How did they miss the passports in his jacket pocket?! Seems so basic.
Yeah pretty basic thing
Yes. During the autopsy, the pathologists should have documented and turned over all the contents of the victims clothing. It's standard practice (and common sense) to check victims' pockets for ID and other personal items.
This is a *major* oversight.
When you study this case enough. It was a professional hit but on the man on the bicycle this poor family were in the wrong place at the wrong time
I have been waiting far too long for you to cover this case! I am sure that your narrative will be much more enriched and your analysis will be very thorough. Now I am going to listen to the podcast. Thank you Casefile. Much love and admiration from France.
This case has baffled me since I first heard about it. Lots of possibilities and questions.
Hit man?
He was a spy, and his wife was actually working for someone else, and yes, of course, was a hitman, because how else they gonna make them despair
I agree. It sounds like an assaination. The skill of the shots. Reloading during the assult. Killing an accidental witness. Not knowing there were _two_ daughters. Persuing the family somewhere isolated, then leaving the scene quickly. All hallmarks of a professional killing.
I just sat down with my morning coffee and a colouring book. Thank you for bringing me the final piece to a perfect morning.

Good day to America from Spain❤
Never heard this case. I'm still near the start, but how BRUTAL. It's amazing that the little one stayed hidden for so long. Her fear must have been so immense. So fat great detail, info and presentatio. Thank you, CF, for another bringing attention to this.
Netflix made a docuseries on it.
Channel 4 have done a really good series on it. You may find here on youtube.
Had the cyclist who discovered the massacre achieved his goal of “catching up” with the other cyclist, it would have likely been his last tour 🙁
Thanks Casefile, I’ve not come across this case before. Well done, as always.
I would love for this case to be presented at a VIDOC Society meeting in the US and see what they have to say.
They've never solved anything.

Thanks Casefile! Well done, as always ♥️
Every time i think ive solved it ‘hang on, what, theres more’ such an intriguing murder. Hope it gets solved one day but its a really hard one. Happy the girls survived and are living a good life and feel safe.
You should still make an emergency 911 phone call if you dont have service, because it's for 911 it will still try and signal off nearby military or other towers!
It's not guaranteed if the signal is blocked by, say, mountains, which is where this case took place. The valleys of the French Alps are gorgeous, but those mountains that make the area so beautiful still block service. Also, I don't believe that 911 is the emergency number in France. Pretty sure it's 999.
Its 112 in France or dial 17@thing_under_the_stairs
"The cops broke in to his house and found stuff that indicated he suspected someone might break in to his house, which they found suspicious". Very British and subservient.
Very well put together podcast although I really prefer the endings that are solved ,
Thanks case file
Me too
Me three.
Me 4
That was a compelling, albeit tragic, case. I didn't expect it to end unsolved though! I don't believe it was the perfect crime. I suspect the ability to solve it was thwarted by sloppy initial police work which created a vastly more difficult case. I hope one day it will be solved. I'm fascinated to know the why behind this one. I hope the surviving family are managing to live their lives well now.
Do you HAVE to write a damn spoiler and talk about the ending in the top comments ? FFS
@@yeetnama9094 perhaps try listening to the podcast before reading the comments section where ppl discuss the case!
@@yeetnama9094 why would you look at comments before listening?
This case springs to mind that of Israel Keyes, and to a lesser extent, Jack Unterweger. Keyes confessed to having researched targets, prepared and planted kill kits ahead of time, and was meticulous in his planning (until he got sloppy and targeted a gal in his hometown).
Europe has two murders, at least, committed with old weapons - this one, and that of Alistair Wilson. Little to no physical evidence, murky motives, and stranger on stranger attacks.
I was listening to a different case on here and saw this new one! Yay
This account by Casefile includes a few details I have not read/listened to in other accounts. Maybe due to it being more recent than others. Good job!
🇬🇧 I keep thinking of Sherlock Holmes theory about a crime..
" When you remove the impossible,
Whatever remains, however improbable is the answer!"
This really is a convoluted & multi faceted crime!
But! I think with all the senarios the French & British detectives
Theorised on, the waters became muddied very quickly.
The lack of communication & possible co operation between the two police depts & the lack of care, re allowing all & sundry to contaminate the crime scene before a meticulous search was carried out.
Listening to this, had me breathless with the mad jumping from one theory to the next from Saddam Hussein to Swiss bank accounts to a money grabbing greedy brother, then espionage, industrial secrets,
Mad snipers, Hit men, secret husband in America, ...oh my word!
Instead of rushing about like headless chickens, the British &
French law enforcement should have set up a co ordinated team.
With info categorised as possible
Impossible, improbable & probable
Too much time spent on crazy ideas.
As time went on, id say much was lost & anything important wasnt acted upon, like finding the Al Hilli passports in the jacket of the dad Saad, TWO YEARS after the crime took place!
I mean at the onset, it took teams of cops 8 HOURS to find the 4yr old daughter in the back seat!! Crikey.. talk about incompetant!
If it wasnt the money obsessed
Greedy, ungrateful & controlling brother of Saad Al Hilli, then
Its impossible to find the right answer!
Like looking for a diamond in a muddy river!
You did a brilliant job in presenting this tangled & trashed crime, in at least a half way understandable form.
It must have been a right old headache trying to put stuff in a chronological order & make sense of the info!
Well done anyway! You should have been investigating this crime!
Peace to All
🇬🇧👧
I remember this case well when it happened, international news, followed it closely
Could this be something to do with the Iraq wars bearing in mind father was born in Iraq. Could that be an explanation.
"The perfect crime" yes, one full of holes that all point to a particular conclusion but which must be ignored to maintain the status quo and the image of a nation.
Ya the brotheres were at each others throats over inheritance but its just a misunderstanding
I've been listening to Casefile on Spotify for years, never realised it's on YT too 😂
Always called The Alps Murders. I don't know why people feel the need to change the names.
The key is that gun. Probably an old timer. I would interview friends and family of the motorcycle rider about his firearms.
Crazy...
This isn't a mystery at all. Just shotty detective work not being able to bring charges against this woman.
Who was in charge of the French investigation - Inspector Clouseau ? They could not find one child for 8 hours even though she was in the CAR and they took nearly a whole YEAR to find the Passports of this poor family EVEN THOUGH they were in the Jacket pocket of the deceased !!!! French Police are Totally Imcompetent.....
I say that in the first part of your comment they did right because they had to preserve the crime scene and slowly analyze it comb for evidence, while the girl didn’t make a sound and was well hidden in the car.
When it comes to the passports, yeah it’s insane, I agree.
@@Godsservant778 The reason it took 8 hours was because they asked a team from Paris to attend .....Not because they were being super careful to preserve the scene ...Their actions were inexcusable ....The French cops and prosecutor were and continue to be useless ....Had the British cops been in charge they wud have solved this crime .... British cops are the best in the world
@@Godsservant778 St Geroges mother was Palestinian btw .....
@@Ghost_Rider_786 I didn’t know that, they still did right by asking for help from a more experienced team, but if they still messed up the evidence at the crime scene then I agree they are incompetent. I would say French police is pretty bad yes, it’s something common in more cases. I don’t know how good British police is, but their law has insanely small sentences for serious offenses.
@@Ghost_Rider_786 🤣 The British police who fail to catch 3 out of 4 burglars, managed to get 3,000 charges out of 130,000 car thefts, has a single digit charge rate for assaults, harassment, & public offenses, & has more than a quarter of unsolved murders. Yeah, they're the greatest.

My suspicion is road rage. The forest worker said they were driving very fast.
Eric Devouassoux sounds very based.
This is a real mystery... I've been to that area (many years ago, I did my junior year abroad, my university had a branch in Talloires). It's such a beautiful place and the last place you'd imagine something like this happening (cliché thing to say I know, but it's true)
This is too many coincidences for me
French started cleaning
When exactly did the younger daughter get inside the trunk of the car ? Not before the shooting, surely, so how did she escape a professional hitman when nobody else did ?
Nobody was in the trunk.
It was road rage from the biker to the cyclist who having shot him finished off the family. Mobile phone records are the key.
Random seems ridiculous. The x husband dying on the same day coincidence…NOT believable.
Right? We're all supposed to pretend that it's perfectly rational and not at all suspicious. BS, it's so obvious when these intelligence agencies screw up and then try to feed us the most ridiculous stories, meanwhile when coincidences actually happen the authories are all over it with "no such thing as a coincidence, it was planned!".
My reply isn't viewable, which means my comment was far too close to the truth.
I agreed with OP. Coincidence only exists for authorites when it benefits them and doesn't exist for anyone else in the criminal justice system.
@@stykytte Or it's just a CZcams glitch. Happens a lot. You're not special.
@@ninedaysjane2466 Yeah, sure "glitch", when people type certain things that never go through but can type gibberish and it's fine.
I would tell you how the YT comment system actually works but it won't go through, weird that..
Many of these theories and tangents seem to be taken from one book. It feels a little sensationalist. It sounds like a hate crime where the police totally bungled the outcome.
Some of the details mentions are rather innocuous too. Poor Zaid was almost railroaded for his brother's murder.
Such a travesty what has been forced on our once safe countries.
Yup. 3rd world savagery and degeneracy. Thanks to our Semitic overlords for our widen open borders!
Gates of Toledo all over again.
I honestly can't blame Zaid al Hilli at all for his refusal to go to France. The xenophobia (and islamaphobia in particular) of French law enforcement is notorious, it would have been incredibly easy for him to get railroaded based on his ethnicity alone. Some people might find his refusal suspicious but tbh it makes complete sense to me!
wonder why ghaha
Very good, they dont belong in France.
Awww poor muslims
Westerners should start going into Muslim nations and start demanding stuff.
I mean, there are plenty of majority muslim countries they could live in... but they chose such horrible conditions in racist xenophobic Europe... haha. That says more about muslim countries than Europe.
This one cannot be blamed on 🇺🇸 gun laws.
R U sure?
where do you get an ancient Luger? why use such an odd weapon when there are much better weapons, a racist drunk local hot head did it.
why would you carry enough ammo to reload 3 times your ancient gun?
The girl said the truth, his dad was shot first in the back, their where no shots before that as the cyclist had to be close to the site to hear those first shots, he was not shot until he drove to spot.
No cop shaming
It was the motorcyclist duh
Killer as elusive as serial killer Thomas Dillon.
IMO it appears Aliens did this

Please make your Podcasts about cases SOLVED
I'm sure he'll bend over backwards to accommodate your specific request.
This is basically solved anyway, we might never know who pulled the trigger but read between the lines and you know why. The French gov do not want certain leads followed, completely disregard important evidence and circumstances as "coincidence" and are hyperfocused on finding any random nutter to pin it on - speaks volumes.
They cover plenty of solved cases...but ok.
Nitpicking here, but I love that you learned how to pronounce Sylvain... but then went on to pronounce Iraqi as "Eye-Raki" ...when most people know that only Americans pronounce it that way out of pure disrespect. As an Aussie, you know it's "Ee-Raki" and that’s very disappointing. You'll still maintain your US audience without disrespecting others. Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi 🇦🇺 !
