- DESCRIPTION
On April 28th, 1996, Martin John Bryant became known as the worst single mass-murderer in Australian History. 21 years later, the Port Arthur Massacre still stands as the 3rd deadliest shooting by a lone gunman in the world.
Known as a loner with the IQ of an 11-year-old, a series of events in Martin Bryant’s life would go on to trigger a rampage that would change hundreds of people’s lives that day, as well as the lives of everyday Australians who looked on in horror.

By far,,,the most detailed and emotional listen I've ever had, regarding this horrendous, unthinkable act of evil. It's till affects us to this day. Thankyou for your deep research and presentation of this sad day in Tasmanian/Australian history . Prayers to all involved. Visited 3days before , it's all very raw, still...
One of the worse things I've ever heard was by a lady who survived the Cafe she said she saw a lady get hit and her brain came out and landed in a bowl of chips all she could do was put a cloth over it. This case was so horrific beyond words I feel dirty just mentioning it. Those poor people it's just so sad.
Yes, unimaginable horror for those poor people, may the deceased RIP.
The thoroughness and details you cover involving people's family life, upbringing, interests and hobbies as well as early warning signs makes you by far the best podcast I have found. Does anybody know if any others this good?
I really like Stephanie Harlowe, she does some pretty deep dives into the crimes she talks about - usually multiple hour+ long videos.
Watching this podcast I feel he probably had undiagnosed Autism:
1. First year of his life was fine. (Regression happens around 1.5 yrs.)
2. Rejected cuddles. In the Spectrum it can go both ways - the child either needs lots of physical pressure (hugs) or they can't take any touch or hugs.
3. Difficulty bonding between parent and child
4. Escaping and running as soon as he could walk. Known in the autism community simply as "Running". Our 6yo ASD kid does this.
5. Speech delay.
6. Destroy toys (and he probably didn't play with toys in the usual fashion).
7. Social problems in kindergarten. Classic sign of autism. Not understanding social cues and not knowing how to interact socially.
8. Behavioural problems: "Aggressive, destructive, difficult with other children."
9. Grabbing the steering wheel of the car.
Because I could see all the signs early on in the video (since much of it coincides with my own kid's condition) I was horrified by the eventual outcome.
I just watched another video where the investigators interviewed him. He makes eye-contact, sits quite still and shows interest in what is being said, which are NOT signs of classic autism. Very creepy guy.
So I dunno, maybe a mixture of some spectrum signs with a healthy dose of psychopathy.
I’m thinking grabbing the steering wheel is like Tourette’s also
It said he had Asperger's.
Clear nowadays, but not when he was young, and not in that area.
But we're still seeing the results, even today, of lack of proper care into adulthood of people at risk of offending.
I have autism, and I can say that it's not unlikely that he may have had Autism. I (and I may be an outlier) don't really find myself shocked or horrified by murder or mass murder, and I have a sort of insensitivity to violence, meaning that I might be more able to commit such crimes.
Yet again, most Autistic people I know who are also in the community are mostly normal people, who can only exhibit one or two of the things on this list.
We call running ‘absconding’ hahaha not just running. But hey we probably live in different countries. I was a disability worker too haha before I worked out I was definitely autistic myself
I think it's likely he suffered a combination of health and psychological issues, including as you said a good does of psychopathy, culminating in his inability to react, respond and behave within 'normal' parameters.
Very disturbing episode.
A very informative, clearly spoken and well researched account.....well done!.....lets hope we never have another incident of this kind again.

Great coverage of this senseless massacre. I see Port Arthur mentioned from time to time in reference to the mass shootings in the US. It is amazing to me how quickly Australia reformed its gun laws.
This shooter has a lot of similarities to the Las Vegas music festival massacre.
doesnt that seem a bit odd to you ?
I just listened to a mention of the Las Vegas shooter by two forensic psychologists. They said that there is still no motive discovered for his actions. He supposedly did not fit on the spectrum.
Oh yes they were very similar in the way that they were completely orchestrated events designed to shift people's ideals on private gun ownership in their respective countries. Apparently down under it worked but here in the US they've got a long way to go before we give up our weapons.
Oh and by the way Australia didn't reform it's gun laws, that would in town that people were actually still allowed to own weapons. They straight out took those things away and destroyed them turning citizens into subjects and unable to fight back.
@@voiceofreason1208 Australia had guns at that time. Look at who could fight back. Look at who could fight back in all US shootings so far. Lots of guns and no one fights back…someone is filling their pockets with morons money. Lol. Keep it up!
@@voiceofreason1208 Rubbish.
Interesting story disgusting and disturbing and sad
Excellent coverage of this story, as usual for Casefile, although it irritated me greatly that you kept referring to him as "Martin" as though he was a normal human being. I'd have referred to him as "Bryant" or more accurately "the monster". I was at nearby Richmond holidaying with my family when this massacre occurred. We had planned to visit Port Arthur the next day, Monday, because it would be less crowded than Sunday! On such small decisions life or death hangs.
Sometimes, pure evil just exists.
He was born bad,he needed to be straight jacketed and padded cell,i can't believe people felt sorry for him,I suppose they haven't had loved ones killed by him
The overlooked tragedy is Australians lost their ability to defend themselves over this. It wasn't his fault, it was the GUNS!!!! Blame the guns, take them away!!!! Don't worry, I won't list all the liberties you guys lost since you lost your gun rights, but YOU know what they are, and I know what they are, and that's good enough for me. Take your rights back before your whole country is owned by (some other people). ffs...
And yet we have more guns in Australia now than any time in history!
@@bearcatracing007 Is this a fact? Well congratulations Australians! You have a modicum of my respect back.
I’ve always thought that one of the strangest things about this was that after Bryant started shooting in the cafe someone jumped up and shouted, “No, not here!”
Reactionary response for self preservation. If you are trying to plant doubt into peoples minds, please don’t. Bryant is where he should be and will be released as a corpse and not before.
@@annab8189 I’m not trying to plant doubt in peoples’ minds. A very strange reactionary response for self preservation. It immediately resulted in the gunman focusing on him and shooting him dead. Again, why shout ‘not here’?
There are things much stranger about this case than that.
Like, some people even deny he did it. That's the real crazy.

i heard that someone said that too, people have said it was because the ship or boat was the planned spot. idk though, but it is interesting someone would say that.
Similar to the Elliot Rodger case. Same hatred caused by loneliness and inability to communicate with people in a compassionate way which in turn was caused by already existing hate towards other people because he felt different, jealous of others for their ability to relate to people.

I remember that day. Still hard to believe it, all this time later. Very thorough and interesting coverage of such an horrific event in our nation's recent history. I didn't know about everything that had occurred once he'd left Port Arthur that day. As to the conspiracy theory you mentioned, I can't imagine there's truth to it, and I most certainly hope there's not. But regardless, I applaud the actions of John Howard's gun reform after this event and am pleased for it to this day.
Something I will always respect John Howard for
What, stripping nearly every Australian of their ability to defend themselves?
perhaps prohibiting mentally retarded violent people from owning guns, or maybe having a police force that doesn’t take 4 hours to respond to reports of a massacre might have done the job
@@Ilych367 no.i mean not turning Australia into another United States. Thank God for that 😁😀🤗
@@Ilych367
the reason why it took the police 4 hours to respond was because there were 2 officers alone against a guy with a rifle, you don't just rush in. If you do that and get shot, he's now got your gun, and a radio to listen to every thing the police do, not to mention all of your weapons
additionally, most Australians (like me) aren't really bothered that firearms are restricted.
For criminalising armed self defence and sending an innocent man to jail for life WITHOUT a trial? 19 of the fatalities were caused by head shots. Ted Serong the Vietnam era A.D.F. chief a counter terrorism expert and marksman said he wouldn't have been able to achieve that degree of accuracy in that situation and for that many shots and thus believed Bryant who had only recently inherited a lot of money and thus been able to buy guns couldn't possibly have done that so why if Bryant was arrested and jailed (without a trial) wasn't anyone else? He also believed Howard had an agenda though he wasn't sure exactly what it would be. I guess you think the N.S.W. judiciary did a great job enabling Man Monis to lay siege to the Sydney Lindt Cafe and murder two innocent people by granting him bail despite being charged with the murder of his wife and allowed him to retain his firearms licence over the strong objections of police, and it was just as well there was no law abiding proficient firearm owner present to execute Monis and save those two innocent people whose deaths created a black hole in the hearts of their loved ones, and the police refused to let their sniper shoot Monis before he took any lives and those who stormed the cafe bumbled their way the entire time, and to top it off I guess you're brimming with pride about the fact the L.N.P. have done NOTHING to fix the bail laws so that never happened again and won't restore our legal right to freedom of speech. What a twat you are!
@@moirsomeone6543 leave your vivid imagination to writing stories because your comment is exactly that. Bryant was obsessed with guns. He had collected many firearms over the years and people recalled hearing gunshots in nearby forests where he would practice by shooting animals. He may have been mentally slow but he had good, sharp eyesight which has nothing to do with intelligence.
RIP Pauline Masters and all. Glad we at least changed gun laws instantly unlike America’s mass shootings.
My mate just told me he lost a beloved mother to him in this massacre. I cried listening to him walking in and shooting her in the head in the cafe. This woman was a social worker and helped and cared so much about people like Martin only to be murdered by him. She didn’t want to go on holiday to tassy but got dragged there. She didn’t want to see the sad colony stuff and chose to have a coffee instead while her friends went. It breaks my heart. I wonder if anyone will ever interview this bastard who put cuts in the bullets to cause worse impact. Probably better off not giving him any attention and assume he is very unwell and probably has a better life in prison if he was driven to shooting all these poor people. 😩
I feel for the rest of his family daughter mother and poor maurice
This comment section is fascinating! I've heard about the alternative theories, can someone fill me in on the basics so I can look into it?
I've had quite an extensive look into the conspiracy theories surrounding this case and I must admit there are some baffling facts that should have been investigated... Two that stand out to me is 1. The shooter fired from the hip when in the cafe and managed to achieve a near perfect head or heart shot ratio, something a SAS sharp shooter said was almost impossible to achieve given the experience of the gunman (Bryant) and the environment of his surroundings at the cafe, this was documented and even featured on a news story channel 9 screened some while back, 2. When Bryant was held up with his hostages in the sea scape lodge and talking with the police negotiators on the phone, gunshots can be heard in the back ground which supposedly was Bryant firing at the police outside, a one point you can hear Bryant actually says to the negotiator "careful you don't hit your man" implying that someone else was with him in the lodge at that time firing at the police outside... a retired police officer was investigating the many discrepancies in the case but died a few years into his investigations but there is a book he released with some interesting facts.... Look up Keith Allen Noble for more info. Regards Jon
@@jonmartin8408 Martin took a male hostage after stealing the guy's BMW and (after also killing his wife) put him in the cars boot. This was the hostage he took back to the Seascape Lodge and who he was talking about when he told the police to watch their return fire during the shoot out. Martin himself shot the hostage he took at some point during the night anyway.
the broad arrow cafe shooting, 1 head shot from the hip every 1.3 secounds. over 90% had head wounds. the unknown professional assassin was showing off his skill. martyn fired dozens of rounds at the police from seascape(allegadly) and hit nothing. martin also managed to shoot at police from the top story window, even though he was downstairs in the kitchen making a sandwich while talking to police on the phone. one of the rifles serial numbers was found to be a rifle handed in to police in SA years before. how did that end up in tasmania? A local gun store owner was threatened and bullied into admitting he sold martin the rifle, even though he didnt, and had no proof of sale to support the purchase.
all we know for sure, is that martin liked guns, was a imbicile, and made to go along with a coerced and corrupt police investigation. witness statements that did not match the police narrative were withheld from court proceedings and these witnesess were forbidden from froviding evidence. a former SASR commanding officer was quoted as saying in all of his military career, no single soldier or level of training even by SASR standards could have achieved the same results as the shooter(s) at port arthur.

@@francespridmore6101 it is respect for those that lost their lives and their families which makes me so angry. Did you even watch rhe suggested vid? I find that difficult by itself. Anyhow, you can say anything and i am meant to nod and just take your word..... dont think so mate. Wendy Skurr was there. Her story and Andrews research paints a very different picture. I dunno what happened but there is something very dodgy about the whole thing.
@@paulmcmahon6875 I don't know why it would have been set up, but unless you wanted to murder 45 people, specific or random, there are many more ways to achieve it than causing (or appearing to cause) 45 murders.
@@bearmarco1944 it was 35. Dunno where you got 45 from.
As to why, the obvious reason is to create a reason to enforce stricter gun laws. I have never been a hunter or gun enthusiast so am not overly phased what the laws are as long as they're not so stupidly leanient as America. So the laws don't really effect me.
There are no doubt easier ways to kill as many or more people unless you have a specific aim..... Stricter gun laws. Hence, a mass murder by a apparent gun nut with the I.Q. of 66 and the mental age of an 11 year old. Apparently a legal owner who should never have been allowed a gun licence.
The less obvious and far more insidious and terrifying is simply tighter government control of body and mind of the populous.

The body follows the mind.

Martin is a wasp isnt he
So many holes in this story. False flag
like what?
@@bearmarco1944 You don't think it's suspicious that a man with 66iq that admitted to being a bad shot could pull this off while using a right-handed weapon even though he is left-handed and firing from the hip ?
@@beigeocean5665 no, I don't.
because guns still hit things, whether he hit all of his shots or 1% doesn't matter if he fired hundreds, because at some level people got hit. One's IQ amounts to their intellectual capacity, for things like arithmetic. One's abillity to shoot straight is not dependent on their IQ.
Firing from the hip does not decrease accuracy fully, and I don't believe he was hip-firing the whole shooting. Police response was very slow and most people were confused, which is an optimal situation for a shooter.
@@bearmarco1944 come on man... There's a reason why no military in the world trains their soldiers to fire from the hip. It absolutely does greatly reduce accuracy and according to the narrator at one point there were 29 shell casings on the ground and 32 victims, some of which had been shot multiple times, yet no report of him stopping in the middle of the whole fraccus to pick up casings. It was a false flag and an entire continent lost their gun rights.
@@voiceofreason1208 If they wanted to get rid of Australian gun rights, they didn't need this kind of incident to happen. There had been several shootings in previous years like Hoddle Street, Queens Street, Walsh street. If you brought all them up in parliament, there would be no doubt that you could get the laws repealed.
Additionally, it's not like firing from the hip doesn't work. The Christchurch shooting at the Al-Noor mosque happened from the hip, but almost 50 people died from the shooter. Whilst he may have killed more if he had fired while aiming, he didn't, and still killed an unfortunate number of people.
Also, the fact that this is a regional seaside town may explain that not all victims were shot on-site. A victim was brought to a building and a hostage situation started, during which, the shooter fired rounds, which obviously wouldn't be at the site. It's also possible some casings weren't found or rolled into the ocean.
Finally, if this was a false flag and cover-up, don't you think they would have done it better?
This is absolutely incredible. Not in a good way either.
Self loading and military style weapon are meaningless terms used by people who don't know anything about gun. The same type that think wood grain rifles are automatically less powerful than those with a black finish and pistol grips add power.
This should not have happened. The moron had dozens of the reddest of flags. This was a failure at multiple points by his family, law enforcement, and government. The actions of law enforcement were sluggish and disorganized which allowed about a dozen more people to die who didn't need to. The banning of guns afterwards has done very little to nothing to stop other shootings. People are under the false understanding that no other mass shootings have happened since then. This could have been prevented by simply reporting his comments and actions leading up to the attack.
Yeah but it makes people 'feel safe' due to the government virtue signal of making law abiding citizens hand in their private property. :o) Meanwhile criminals still keep getting their hands on firearms and shooting people. Or people get into vans and run people over. Or people make bombs and blow people up.
Now why would he want tomato sauce for when he's on his way to shoot everyone in sight?
Could be used to feign a gunshot wound/play dead a la Metal Gear Solid. Be creative! 😉
Maybe because he wasn't?

What's with the guy filming the man holding his dying wife?He must of come with the woman that thought the whole scene was part of a reenactment. There is no way these 2 would get as much as a scratch.
Well, in order to get people to willingly give up their guns, you have to make the shootings chock full of what I call "star victims". You know, like in the US in Arizona, where congressperson Gabby giffords allegedly took a gunshot to The Head And yet has no scar to show for it, there was an old Marine who shielded his elderly wife with his body and died doing so. There was the little girl who was shot the same day who was born on, of course, 9/11. The man holding his dying wife was probably filmed by a government type in order to tug at the heartstrings of the general public and convince them they should be willingly give up their weapons. Problem reaction solution.....
@@voiceofreason1208 Oh my god come off it you hero, look at how well easy gun access is working for the US, a murder and suicide rate that dwarfs Australia. Not every mass killing is some big conspiracy, sometimes people who are mentally unstable just kill people.
@voiceofreason1208 that's a big fail because we have more guns in Australia now than any time in history!
Take a shot everytime you hear "Martin" 😂
The same way I came up with the idea to take a shot every time he said the phrase exceptionally small penis during the East area rapist series. 😂😂😂
So he left 29 spent shells on the floor? He must have picked a few up right? Because according to the numbers you just said there were 32 victims, dead and wounded combined. It was also stated that some people were shot multiple times.... The math just doesn't add up.
Critical thinking is necessary people.
I agree, critical thinking is necessary. I did think about such theories, but critical thought makes me realise that it's possible that casings weren't found, not all were counted or some rolled into the ocean.
It's definitely more likely than a big government conspiracy.
Shells can easily go missing, especially in a mass-casualty situation. I certainly don't think this massacre is some kind of conspiracy.
The shooter left an empty 30 round magazine in the cafe, it’s noted in the court records. Witness statements confirm that he sat and ate a meal before the shooting. The metal meal tray, the drink can and other items left by the shooter provided the opportunity to collect forensic evidence to prove the identity of the shooter. None of this irrefutable evidence was provided by the Prosecution in the case against Bryant.
