- Next in our look at Virtual Boy's Japan-exclusive lineup is the system's sole foray into the fishing genre: A by-the-numbers take on the format by Locomotive and Pack-In-Video called, creatively, Virtual Fishing. It is... fishing. On Virtual Boy. The end.
Thanks as always to Chris Kohler for lending his copy of the game to this project. - Hry
Missed opportunity at the end to say that maybe it's ok to let virtual fishing "be the one that gets away"
I really like the per-line scroll effect going on here. It's not a big deal in a fishing game, but it's a nice effect.
I can't name how many times I've passed over NES copies of the Black Bass, assuming it to be just another generic fishing game, rather than the game from which so many future fishing games took their inspiration
Hot-B's had their revenge there!
Black Bass on NES plays very rough. It's slow, hard to play, and you'll really want to mute the thing at times. Blue Marlin fares a lot better, and it feels like Hot-B learned from their previous effort.
I can't wait for the day when The Black Bass comes to NES works. I remember watching my dad play that game endlessly. Excellent video as always.
The specific Zelda footage reminds me how sad I was that fishing in BotW was restricted to dynamite fishing.
Or other forms of blunt force trauma fishing.
you gotta swim after your food like some neanderthal XD
I'm surprised there was no mention of Big and Sonic Adventure in the intro portion.
_SOMETHING'S BITING!_
The tunes seem appropriately soothing in this one. I dig it!
I pause at 1:48 and if I didn’t have any context, I’d be completely at a loss as to what I was looking at. Mid-resolution monochrome graphics work great for cartoon characters but they struggle when depicting realistic natural scenes.
This blob of pixel noise is a tree, this blob is a cliff.
5:53 this is the first I’ve heard of Virtual Lab ... you can be forgiven for not covering a $1500 piece of Kusoge 😳
The high-pitched rapid beeping the game does is very similar to the beeping that my dog's invisible fence collar emits when he's about to get a shock, so he was freaking out when I was watching this video.
Aw, please extend my apologies to the pup.
@@JeremyParish Wasn't your fault. Just an interesting side effect.
I have been very much enjoying this series, thanks for the hard work Jeremy.
Sidenote, The Blue Marlin for NES is awesome.
An extremely well spoken channel.
until i started watching this series i only thought they made like 13 VB games
I think the highlight of this game isn't even in the game itself... it's the absolutely _adorable_ fish on the cover art.
I'd give this one a try. Just for the halibut
You just pitched a great idea: Waterworld Fishing Simulator!
Well, of course it can't be Waterworld WALKING Simulator.. amirite?
No, But it COULD be Waterworld Swimming simulator... ;p
@@KuraIthys Also a Waterworld urination filtration simulator too!
... I'll take your word for it on that one. XD
It's been a LOOONG time since I saw waterworld. XD
Ordered this game from Japan and looking forward receiving and playing it on my recently acquired VB although everyone claims this game is bad.
"Let Virtual Fishing languish in Japan". Surprised you didn't go with "Let Virtual Fishing be the one that got away." For the fishing humor.
Oh no... I'm fired, aren't I?
Because fishing puns are too obvious and Parish decided to go against tradition.
Yeah... let's go with that.
nice chiptuned version of your next episode song !
o/ Nature has some new plague
to run in our streets.
History, some new wrinkle
we are doomed to repeat.
Fugitives at the bedroom door,
lovers pause to find an open store.
Rain is burning on the forest floor,
and the RED TIDE kisses the shore...
THIS IS NOT A FALSE ALARM!
THIS IS NOT A TEST! o/
There seem to be like half a million fishing games for the Game Boy
Wait, how the hell are there MORE virtual boy games?! Theres more Japanese only games?!
Is that Fish Dude?
I believe canonically Fish Dude died on the way back to his home planet.
Please refer to Game Boy Works Episode 096 for more on this.
8th!
Edit: Now with that out of the way, fishing games are an interesting phenomenon. Based on how many of them have been made on all kinds of platforms, there's gotta be quite an enthusiastic target audience for them, but personally, I've never understood the appeal of them, at all. As a mini game inside a 'proper' game of a totally other genre, like in Link's Awakening for example, why not, they can be a fun little distraction, provided the grind required to get the rewards offeres for completing them isn't too massive. But as a stand-alone game with the fishing being *the* sole main attraction? Sorry, hard pass for me. Same for any kinds of hunting games. Guess you gotta be an enthuasiast in order to want a simulation of those...
