@@Soaches yeah this looks like a great console other than the price being high for the features included. But I wouldn't pre-order it without a good review from somebody like those guys
They probably going to say just get FPGBC
@@davidthomas8766Can't compare the two as this has same resolution screen as an original Gameboy which is actually insane.
i tested one of these out last week, and was impressed with the feel of the buttons and overall build quality. the video link worked flawlessly for the whole week they were there. audio quality was good enough for the 8 bit sound font used in Tetris.
i believe that $200 is a steep price, but isnt overpriced for the quality.
Good luck to Japanese viewers reading those yellow subtitles 😂
And at the tiniest font size ever used in video history. 😂
Filming this with a Video8 camcorder is a nice touch
I remember when these dropped back in 2001, it was wild, I'm glad they're making a comeback
PLEASE nail the controls on this thing. It’s my biggest gripe with the Analogue pocket.
Can't be compared since this only has two buttons, compared 6 on the Pocket.
People that've used it says controls are nicely clickity clackity.
@@8bitnation419 I’m referring to the feel of the buttons and D-pad, not something like the number of buttons.
Yeah the d-pad on the pocket sucks. Luckily there are easy ways to fix it like taping over the inner third of the d-pad contacts on the PCB. After that it's quite nice. I just don't get why companies keep fucking up the d-pad.
I love this concept. Looks like the execution looks promising too
Man, Palmer Lucky is such a chad. He just does whatever he want's and somehow keeps making some of the best products in the Category, or even reviving a category that's been dead for over a decade...
First VR, then autonomous military equipment, now an authentic GameBoy Color clone... what will he come up next
I love the passion and care to recreate an electronic masterpiece from the past so beautifully and thoroughly that it lasts well into the future. To really, really go and do something to the max. This has a great spirit to me and I can’t wait to get one!!!
I LOVE your philosophy and that's why i preordered and just cant wait to get my chromatic!! Thank you so very much for this!
I already have a device that let's me play Game Boy Cartridges on modern hardware, even GBA, but I really like the look of this and I love that we live in a time where we can choose from different companies if we want to play retro games on modern handhelds.
Tested one of these out at SoCal Retro Gaming Expo and my mind was blown at how good it is. I pre-ordered one on the spot.
Yeah it took me back to the 90s
This was a great surprise to wake up to!
Incredible. 😱
Absolutely 🔥🔥🔥
Please demo this before I waste my $225 😭
The screen is what interests me. What does it look like in direct sunlight? Does the screen get much glare? I have a modded gameboy with a tft screen and it plays really well outdoors but the screen is smaller than og and. I would upgrade if it the best way to play outside.
What will be done about the FPGA? Will it be opened up to developers or at least allow more cores in the future? I want to like this but this is holding me back from preordering.
there are many other FPGA consoles already
If anyone knows the answer, I'd be interested in what palette options are available for GB games - are they the same as or similar to the options on the GBC? Is there a mode to replicate the original green GB screen? Also on the subject of the screen, how does pseudo-transparency from flickering sprites fare?
I really appreciate the purest's approach to this thing. Even though I'm not the biggest GB/GBC fan out there I really would love this as a gift.
in for a green one!
This is so much bigger than we can imagine. I am computer scientist and this make me excited to dev some games for GB !
This looks like a video from a VHS. Not complaining at all, great touch. So excited to see this console!!! 💥
it's from a prosumer Sony miniDV camera from late 90's/early 2000's
Yeah the aesthetics on this video are on point! The music as well
Brought to you by gov't defense contract money.
He made his money at Oculus. Everyone knows that. He’s spending it building a defense contractor company.
I am extremely excited about this. What a great way to tribute to the old days. I can wait to see new hame devs on this aswell. It's a great time we live in👌🏾
Woooo!!!
PLEASE tell me there will be translucent purple/grey housings down the road? imho technology peaked when electronics wee see-through purple/grey/green.
Would have to be a different shell material instead of magnesium alloy.
Looks like the IR sensor is there, which would be great since the FPGBC is missing that.
Curious to hear about the Chromatic game cartridges too; some rereleases but also some sequels. Looks good, but do I buy the ones I already have?🤣
Yeah the site mentions it's there. Fun fact: the Analogue Pocket has it too, hidden in its LED. For some reason this isn't documented in their manual.
I have a Pocket as well, which I really love. The screen and stereo speakers would be hard to give up. Though I am considering this as a Player 2 device. So having an IR means I can use it with my Pocket (hopefully)
@@kaipography well the site mentions IR and I actually tested the Pocket's IR myself, so it should be compatible.
@@leatherhidegamingThe funny playing GBC does have the pads in place for the IR sensors, though you have to solder a pair in yourself
Well, that's interesting, congratulations!
Just preordered a yellow console. Thank you for this. Im so hyped ❤
Was ready to shit on this, but this actually brings something different to the table. I'll wait out for trustworthy reviews, and if the price is right.
Actually... Seeing a bunch of YT e-celebs promoting it makes me lose interest. Pass 😂😂😂
I will definitely be getting one of those.
Interesting
I’m very curious to see this in person. They look better in the videos than in renders. Lowkey I hope they go the crkd route and do IP specific editions. I’d buy a castlevania gameboy.
There's no renders. On the website, they're all photos.
This looks amazing, I'm totally jealous Casey got his before me! :)
cool, but i would had selected a 4x resolution screen, so can be scaled for people to select if they want a pixel like vision or a more seemless experience.
I love everything about this! 💚
Is this the same ModRetro as the old forums?
Yes
wtf I didn't anticipate seeing palmer here, cool! isn't he doing military tech?
wow, I can't wait! This is probably the 20th kind I've seen in the past couple months. (quite literally the same.) The market is beyond saturated at this point. It is mind blowing to see people still pumping this out as if it is something new. Like lol. Mind blowing. People will continue to release quite literally the exact sht but rehashed.
This has me so excited.
Ain't no fucking reason for this to be $200
❤
It would look better without the stripes on the bottom right, but its still good, why no awesome grape colour, though
Bro did u record this on VHS or something
How col is it though to bring me back to the 90s when I was a kid
Recorded on a Sony VX2100 that takes miniDV tapes
Oh wow! Sticking with my Analogue and hardware modded gameboys. 🤣
I'm not sure how a 160x144 screen is "the best." Certainly, it is the same as the OG Game Boy and GB Color. The video suggests visible gaps between the pixels, as on the original. This must be fixed and not optional given the resolution. The Analogue Pocket, OTOH, has a 1600x1440 resolution, enabling optional pixel structure and even RGB sub-pixels. I'm not sure I'm understanding the hype here.
Think of it like a designer watch
ap looks like a phone resolution screen
you can also use shaders in retroarch
If you see what the replicated subpixel structure on an analogue pocket looks like up close you’ll understand - with the exception of original Game Boy which I’m happy with, GBC is FAR from accurate. But the screen is also small enough that most won’t notice, and it doesn’t quite bother me.
The original LCD was characterized by its multiple layers of glass creating reflections and has a kind of depth that can't be simulated. The gaps between the pixels are literally gaps and can't be perfectly replicated with a screen filter. Now, I'm not saying the older screen looks better, only that it has a distinct look that requires a bespoke replica to project. If you think that sounds dumb you're not alone but also you don't need to buy this product. Some folks actually prefer this, regardless of how you think of their tastes. IMO I think "the best" is an overstatement, but "the most authentic" is maybe more accurate.
Doesn't see this as a way to make money but it costs more than a Switch
Logan Paul being in this promotion bodes a terrible omen in the future of this product.
Palmer Luckey being in this promotion bodes a terrible omen in the future of this product.
I'm curios to see how this stands against the slightly more expensive Analogue Pocket as well as the FunnyPlaying FPGBC which is only half the price.
I am honestly interested.
Wish it had DP over Type C or something however.
hell yeah!
Why is this better or more worth it than analogue pocket tho?
because it has same dimensions, same display (plus backlight), and it work only with GameBoy games to give you authentic vibe and fillings
Can I control KILLER ANDURIL DRONES with this?
Super awesome! What’s the game after tetris at 1:13?
Tales of Monsterland DX
If you go over to their page in video desc and choose 'Games' tab you can find it

I absolutely love the design philosophy and everything about this passion project, so all I want to know is does it work properly with the EverDrive GB X7? Say yes and you can have my $200 without a second thought!
No, it doesn’t. Look up the FPG clones that are already out there and selling for less than 50 bucks. It just doesn’t work.
@@Vidalburgos how do we know it isn’t compatible on Chromatic though?

@@jasonjasonjasonjasonjason man your unlocking memory's, fuck you jimmy and shawn. There dead to me.
Does it support save states when playing with cartridges?😂
Probably not as it is "just" a replicated GBC via FPGA. The main reason is that there's no SD card to save the states to (and they can't be stored on the cartridges).
The fact that it has an inbuilt battery, but on top you can also use standard AA batteries is amazing. I'd love something like this on my Switch, which has a habit of being completely drained when I have to go out and sit somewhere
Update: The website is not very clear on this. It sounds like you would have to order a battery pack additionally.
It's used FPG or Emulation?
Why buy this when you can play any game on your phone?
🔥
Bro had to nerf the technology to be the same as Gameboy display
Niceee
Need to make a Grey gameboy color theme one. I ordered the yellow and like it, but if you expand the colors like a DMG theme or SNES theme, I'd buy one again!
We just need the screens!
Really wish that this would play GBA games as well. It would make the price point just right. As is; seems like it does just a bit too little in the market it is competing in.
nice, should've made gameboy color shape tho
I hope that it will not be super expensive, but considering the announced premium materials, I am probably wrong go expect that.
200usd
@@mamaharumi hmm, ok. So far I am not sure how to feel about he price exactly.
@@D.S.handleyou’ll pay that and more for a restored GBC with a backlight or other mods from the various Etsy resellers so I think it’s fair.
@@mikeg2491 yeah, maybe.
This thing is a few years behind, must have been some delay in getting this to market. ~$70-$80 you can get a FPGA GBC by Funny Playing that does all this with a bigger screen and more display features. $20 more and you can get an Analogue Pocket which out of the box can do GB, GBC and GBA. With adapters, you can use carts/cards for Game Gear, Lynx, Neo Geo Pocket, TG-16. Flash special firmware which is so easy to do, and I can play 19 different consoles, 14 different handhelds, 5 PCs (Amiga and C64) and hundreds of arcade games with hardware accuracy. $100 for a TV dock and I can play all this on TV with others with a wide range of BT and 2.4GHz controllers. Not trying to be a spokesman for Analogue here but seriously, no competition.
But it has its own version of Tetris as a pack-in 😱
@@joe_razor SHUT UP! I didn't see that! TAKE MY MONEY!
In all seriousness, it's a cool product, its just too late. The Analogue Pocket has been out for a while and while it can be hard to get, its not a discontinued product. IPS replacement screens have been out for a number of years too. Funny Playing's FPGA GBC just came out of nowhere and does all this while "being a GBC" with the custom shell and all. If this thing came out ahead of Funny Playing's FPGBC, it would be a different story. I have an IPS modded GB, GBC and GBA plus an AP and dock. I'm more interested in the FPGBC but its compatibility with flash carts is problematic. I'm sure this thing will sell and I'm sure at least every CZcamsr that reviews handhelds for a living have already pre-ordered several.
@@GiSWiG I feel you. It is a total niche product, even more snobbish than the analogue, overpriced, but obviously they made no compromise to make just that - a perfect GBC, nothing more and nothing less. The target group is not exactly the one that would buy either the analogue nor the FGBA. The exclusive Tetris is sweet though, something no one has ever done before for this kind of product.
Looked up this Funny Playing thing and it’s a kit. Of course I can save money with anything by building it myself but that’s a whole other niche. Analog Pocket may emulate more but it looks like it has an HD screen and frankly old game boy games just never look right on modern LCDs. Also it’s out of stock. And doesn’t have an original form factor.
This has an HDMI out without the need of a $100 dock, any USB C to HDMI will work, I got one for $7 bucks.
This is Spectacular. I'm looking forward to the Chromatic Advance one day with SP / XL Vibes. ;P
2:42 I see what you did there.
250€ to get this thing shipped to EU. It doesn't even do half of what the pocket can do. Probably better build quality but nothing else.
You sold me on 'better build quality'.
So cool but not for me. Let me know when you do the same for the OG Gameboy Advance.
Let's also honestly not rule out DS
@@ALittleKitten I don't think DS can be done with (affordable) FPGA chips.
@@leatherhidegaming Its the one platform that is just gonna get more and more annoying to play in a format that is nice.
The asking price is way too expensive, there are better devices that play better than this for much cheaper, and why a mono screen? Are people gonna be carrying around worm lights just to trade Pokémon with each other like the 90s? Who is this the target audience for something like this? If i wanted to play on a mono screen i still have my original Gameboy colour and GBA model to get the full "retro" experience 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️ not sure how this will sell tbh
Do I own multiple Gameboys with stupid mods... Yes.
But I want this! would be good for travel.

@@coreystill7197 fair enough I love that you’re feeding The inner child. I hope you have a great year.
Why on earth would anybody buy this for two hundo, when the FPGBC exists, and if you really want to get scammed, the analogue pocket exists?
People spend more than $200 modding game boys every day. Boxy Pixel says hi. I think it’s a solid deal for what you get, especially if they deliver on the promise of a pixel perfect screen with correct color grading and a more ergonomic and comfortable playing experience.
None of these options seem like scams. Just different options for different people and what they prioritize. I appreciate what they are doing with the LCD but I wish it was an OLED, a little larger and without bezels. They really need to nail every other area (hand feel, buttons, presses, accuracy) in order to make it the definitive mid tier option Gameboy replacement. Chromatic doesn’t have as many options or is as pretty as an Analogue Pocket, but preassembled and possibly better feeling than the AP or FPGBC. Still being battery compatible is cool. That d-pad needs to be the best modern DPad in order for me to play it over an AP or OLED GBC.
Why do you need an OLED for Game Boy? Literally the reason why this product even exist is for people who want to keep it original lol
@@Vidalburgos because I have OG Gameboys already and the new OLEDs are in my opinion better looking than any screen that’s not the Analogue Pocket (10x the OG). I just wish either it was larger exact lcd, or an OLED, had openFPGA equivalent, or GBA compatibility. I’m being real about what features would get me to play a system. Like I said the Chromatic can still do that but it would need to excel at everything else (button actuation, d-pad feel, ergonomics, power consumption). However if I’m being real I see this ending up on a shelf if I give it to a casual as a gift (due to screen size/price). Unless the Chromatic really feels that much better or I give it to someone young as their first console. But it’s still kind of expensive for young kids being a mid-tier handheld. $120 at launch or at least for a batch of pre-orders would’ve made it so much more enticing.
@@otterdonnelly9959 yeah I get that man. Supposedly this one has aviation nits or something like that ha
Talk is cheap, let's just hope it's available and affordable. 🤔
I am going to buy this BECAUSE of the native display, the scratch resistant design. AND because it can run on standard aa batteries for a good long while. Rechargable batteries quickly became mandatory for people with their laziness for taking 10 seconds to pop in a couple of fresh batteries. So you would rather want to play your game but the battery is dead so will just wait 2 hours to charge until your machine is ready for YOU to play it? Don't get that and never did. Having a 4 pack of rechargable aa's will do the trick as well. And you will always know you can turn it on with plenty of juice every time. And the color matching koss porta pros are just the icing on the cake.
Love the design but it's inferior to the Analogue Pocket and no other FPGA handheld comes closs to the Pocket at the moment. There are less buttons, no 4 or 6 face buttons, smaller screen, no shoulder buttons and this costs as much as one and looks less premium in comparison. But i'm loving the pixel filters of this handheld, it looks really cool. Hopefully there will one day there will be an FPGA handheld that can rival the Pocket. More Logic Gates, More Buttons, OLED Screen.
It's superior to the analogue pocket in many ways that you are not considering.
@@RogerEssigArtist The Pocket can play Gameboy, Colour, Advance plus more. With open FPGA it can play Neo Geo, CPS1, CPS2, SNES, Megadrive, PC Engine, NES, SMS and so on. This only has two buttons and just plays Gameboy and costs the same as an MSRP Pocket. The only flaw with the Pocket is it's out of stock like all of the time, but if you can get a hold of it. It's so worth it. And if you just want Gameboy and Gameboy Colour. The Funny Playing one costs less than half as much as this.
Analogue pocket costs slightly more and isn't as focused on replicating the game boy and color as this is. People have complained about the pocket dpad.
@@Jbrodack The Pocket 10x's the resolution of the Gameboy and Gameboy Colour running the games at 1440p at integer scale. The filter also replicates a multitude of original screens like the DMG, AGS101, Gameboy Light. And the DPad is plenty good, not the best, I prefer Sega Style DPads, but it is far from bad and very much like a Nintendo DS Lite DPad, and it only costs $20 more. There barely aren't any flaws to the handheld. It's the best you can get out of a handheld in FPGA form and there is nothing else like it at the moment. Only thing that can truly be improved is the screen which should be upgraded to an OLED with Smaller bezels. Now compared to this, this is nice, but does way less and the Funny Playing FPGA Gameboy does exactly what this does at half the cost.
@@8bitnation419 you can buy a $20 watch that does 10x as much as a rolex.

That screen is super cool, but I can't say it's any better than the analogue w/ filters. I'm not sold on the design/aesthetics, either. We will see. (I'd love to have that display in my miyoo mini, though.)
For GBC games it will be - you’re getting the true subpixel structure behind each pixel, which Analogue doesn’t implement despite the high ppi of the display. I’ll need to upload some photos. This new device is promising better colour accuracy, too, though Analogue did push an update last year to improve its “original” filters.

The fact that you were able to convince an editor at the verge to write an article about this. For anyone who is naïve to the scene, the guy is definitely making money off each device, he used AI to generate the video and the fake renders, and the example he listed in that verge article takes two seconds to debunk by switching the filter of the analog pocket screen to Game Boy color LCD.
This guy is a complete narcissist , a genius, and a grifter all at once. You’re a brilliant dude, but don’t think that anyone who actually loves andrespects this scene will fall for your bull. There are better options above and below this price point, that give you more flexibility in terms of what to play, and that are still very high quality machines. Plus you don't have to give a penny to Palmer Luckey if you buy them. Hard pass.
The Analogue Pocket is a jack of all trades, master of none. GB/GBC games look best on a Pocket, but the triggers and unwieldy Dpad and buttons make for a not great playing experience. If this thing can deliver ergonomically and follow through it will be a great option.
I haven’t had any problems with the Pocket controls. I have with some machines. The DPAD on my RGB30 for example could be better, and one weekend I’ll have the free time to mod it.
I’d still call the Pocket a master of the GB/C/A experience. It’s pretty fantastic. But no one machine will be perfect for everyone.
What's the problem with Palmer lucky?
This system is FPGA right? I don't think that's common among other offerings. It's something well worth it to people who want to play the games from a system that had a handful of shortcomings that are not really acceptable today.
But I agree. It's like choosing to eat a Chickfila.
