SD Gundam Dimension War retrospective: Thin red lines | Virtual Boy Works #20

- Japan's next-to-last Virtual Boy release, and the only Japanese title for the platform to be based on a media license. It's SD Gundam, though, and you can bet it lives down to whatever expectations that might instill for you. A brief and unpleasant strategy game in which battles play out through terrible combat sequences, Dimension War is definitely not worth the enormous price it commands on the aftermarket.
Can’t believe you’re almost done. Its been a good ride. Still hoping you touch on Bound High and Faceball a bit.
I was just about to write a comment about this! I strongly agree, it'd be nice to get your take on Bound High at least, given that it's 100% finished despite it's lack of an official release.
THEY'RE JUMPING ONTO WHITE BASE! AHHHHHH!
Moeagareeee, Gundamuuuuuu~!!

Oh hey, Big Zam!
Man, I am learning so much about this infamous system.
It's a real shame someone has to sacrifice a portion of their lives to play some of these games though.
You're a real trooper, Jeremy. Please keep up the good work! 😉
At least this game isn't unreasonably hard or inscrutable, just kind of janky and boring.
These have been great, but I can't wait for more Game Boy again.
Man we're almost there already. Too bad the Virtual Boy didn't have more games 'cause I would have loved more episodes. I'll pick up the book for sure on release
Oh man, the last game next week! I really hope you also give a gander to Bound Hugh and Faceball, even if just a small addenum! This has been a fantastic series!
When I was a kid I was so jealous wishing I could play the SD Gundam games, the screen shots looked so great! I'm frankly shocked they are as bad as they are, since some of the GBA versions were actually pretty good.
SD Gundam games are very different from the SD Gundam shows. As an enormous Gundam nerd, this looks appealing. Seeing a Rick Dias fight Big Zam is pretty damn cool! Yeah, the fight scenes in this game are slow, but I think the gameplay itself is decent.
I've played the one of the SNES versions of this game series. Yeah, the combat is awful, but it gave you the option not to control the combat at all, which made it a far better game. It basically became a Nobunaga style system where numbers, units, and luck determined victory rather than crummy combat controls.
At least the strategy aspect is decent.
Oh hey Big Zam.
I see you're a man of culture as well. I really wish the Grumps would give the Virtual Boy a shot, even through an emulator.
I'm curious to how much they'll make fun of some of these games.
BYG-ZAM
I actually grew up with SD Gundam while having no idea that there was a "normal" series it was based on. I thought it was just the Japanese version of Transformers, and it was fun to watch, but boy, was it silly.
It's not surprising that all these SD Gundam games are so bad. You can't translate over-the-top hammy acting and egregious puns into game mechanics.
The other factor is that SD Gundam is divided into multiple categories. The most common game format is the turn-based strategy, which typically boils down to "move units and see how things play out", but then you get to the weirder stuff like this.
Was very hyped for this episode as I knew the game existed, was very expensive, and saw maybe a handful of screenshot about a decade ago. Definitely looks like one of those game with potential that was severely flawed (those close range fight scenes looked painful to play) so glad they've definitely improved the quality of Gundam games since then.
If you're gonna push Duo Maxwell under the bus, give me a sign first so I can crouch behind him. He'll never know what hit him.
I think we are getting a final video with the unreleased titles since he spoke of the last 4 games released in Japan as an analogy of the Elite 4 in Pokemon before challenging the champion.
I think this looks pretty cool.
Gundam? Damn near Killdam
Mr. Parish covered something Gundam related. :3! I was bummed that you said you weren't going to cover licensed sorts of games for the other Works series, because that meant not getting into the long running Super Robot Wars series, but this makes up for it. ;3
Gundam I barely know 'em. That made me laugh out loud. I wasnt expecting it I guess but it was good shit. Lol
same here hahahaha
I made the mistake of clicking on WatchMojo’s “10 Worst Consoles of All Time” and #1 on their list was the Virtual Boy. The list also included Sega CD (no console w/ Lunar, Snatcher, Shining Force CD, and Sonic CD is one of the worst) and 3DO (debatable).
This series has convinced me that the Virtual Boy, like the song “We Built This City,” gets an unfairly bad rap. (On platforms like the Lynx and Jaguar, only a handful of games were even playable! I had a Lynx back in the day and it was basically a portable Klax machine.)
(I remember, by the way, that on an early 1UP-era Retronauts episode, there was a consensus that the N64 was one of the worst consoles of all time. I wonder if the OG Retronauts crew still feels that way. In 2019, I think most people would rather play the N64 than the PS1.)
Yooo, nice Glass Tiger reference!
Or maybe not, since it's tied to this game.
The hell that is Gundam games. Strange thing is while I watched a lot of anime I still never seen any Gundam. Wonder if I should give it a chance for once.
Gundam fan here so my reply is biased, but the series has a lot to recommend it! I suggest trying "Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket" as a sampler; it's 6 episodes long, so it's not a huge time commitment and it does show off basically what is good about the franchise.
The sd gundam g generation games are decent tactics games that play like super robot wars or fire emblem. Despite the sd in the name they actually have the pilots from the anime/manga/books in the suits and occasionally just straight up follow their plots. If you want to play them there’s an English patch for one on the psp(but it’s a direct sequel to one that’s not translated so the story might be confusing) or you can import the more recent ones that say their for the Asian (not Japanese) region.
Hey dude only gotten into gundam since last year and I highly reccomend both gundam thunderbolt movies( or the manga) or the original series(or the the origins manga). Heard good things about war in the pocket and 8th ms team but couldnt tell you from experience.
The SD games that Jeremy has been reviewing don't actually indicate the quality of the anime series. Even the actual SD Gundam series are a hell of a lot better than the trash these games are. If you like mecha anime with a focus on war drama, then Gundam is right up your alley. I'd honestly start with Iron Blooded Orphans for the Alternate Universe series. It's a good deconstructive take on the Gundam series tropes and I think it holds out. Even Season 2 is still a winner despite the flaws. For the original Universal Century stuff...I'd say start with Gundam 0079 itself. All the other series are so interconnected with the events of the One Year War that you'll be missing a lot of context if you don't at least familiarize yourself with 0079 first.
It's... complicated. Very, very complicated. For beginners, there's two types of Gundam you need to know about; the Universal Century stories, which is the main timeline of the series, and the various alternate realities of the franchise. The original Gundam, along with its various side stories and sequels that take place in this "Universal Century" all tie into this long lasting and complicated war between humans that live on Earth and humans that live in space, which often boil down to the humans living in space often taking extremist measures to secure independence from Earth rule. The alternate realities, which started in 1993 with the series Mobile Fighter G Gundam (if you look up that one, you'll know why), each take on completely different roles using the mecha. For example, After War Gundam X sets place in a time where most of humanty has been wiped out and overall paints a bleak setting for those still alive, while the more well-known Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is set 200+ years from our time period when an alternate energy solution has resulted in the conglomeration of nations into three warring factions and a terrorist group has formed to try and follow the wishes of one person.
You'll also never find a unilateral agreement on the series.
Wow! Did not know this existed!
I personally don't hate SD Gundam (As well as the Gaiden and Sengokuden stuff) as a concept, but the game boy and virtual boy stuff you've covered here does look pretty rough
Though maybe I'm just a simp for model kits and am thus susceptible to the appeals of a Musha Gundam
Great work!!
I see a gundam in a virtual boy.
"But, on the plus side, you don't have to play the game."
My heart sunk on learning this wasn't some unsung classic but at least the news was conveyed to me in the comedic style of one Jeremy Parish. Thanks for doing the job nobody wants to.
The fact that everything else Gundam is reviled has gone a long way towards keeping me from watching the actual show and trying to find out why anyone likes it.
Man, even the show has problems. And I say that as a huge fan of the franchise. Given it spans from like 1979 to present, you get the full range from "Gripping story about the effects of war on societies AND individuals" to "Pandering trash that justifies the 'anime was a mistake' meme/misquote." And everything in-between, too. Series has gone way downhill over the last decade in particular.
Most of the Gundam games are unfortunately dire, but don't let that keep you from watching the series if you're interested in a slightly more serious anime about giant robots fighting. If the last part of that sentence didn't get you excited, then you're never going to like Gundam, but don't judge it based on the quality of its early shovelware game releases. It'd be like saying Star Wars is terrible because the Japanese Famicom game was an atrocity.
Chibi Gundam!
What is that music at the end? It reminds me a lot of the SNES Final Fantasy games.
Final Fantasy IV - Battle with the Four Fiends
The major boss theme.
Surprised this is so bad. I've seen quite a few SD Gundam games that look great, so this throws me off. Although, I guess I'm not a Gundam fan or anything. Either way, hopefully you get around to some of the better ones at some point.
What gameboy bowling game is that to tease Athena's Virtual Bowling?
It's World Bowling from the same dev, you can check it out in GB Works #028.
So... you're NOT going to mention Bound High, or the legend that is Dragon Hopper. Okay, then. Not much to do about it, anyway.
At least the great battle games are good
This video makes my eyes hurt. I can't imagine how awful actually playing this game would be on the eyes if the video strains my eyes this much.
That music reminds me of back to the future on nes. Yuck....
I like idiotic button mashing in games. I can enjoy deeper gameplay mechanics all the same, but it's nice to just turn your brain off and just have mindless fun.
If only the mindless button was fun... Which this certainly seems to lack.
