Space Squash retrospective: In the court of the crimson swing | Virtual Boy Works #15

- Another Japan-exclusive Virtual Boy release, this one from minor publisher Coconuts Japan. And it's a good, if slight, creation that takes great advantage of the Virtual Boy hardware to present players with a sci-fi rendition of a popular sport. Like a lot of other games on the system, it needed a little more time in the oven to achieve its full potential-but it's both fun and interesting, making it one of the more notable imports for Virtual Boy.
..and because it's
*_"S P A A A C E S Q U A A A S S H H H ! ! !"_*
That killed me. 😂
That pun at the intro really sold this one for me. 😅
Don't let Fripp see that King Crimson reference
I hope Robert Fripp doesn't sue you for the KC reference.
Glass Joe and King Hippo are some of the handful of guys you never rematch with, though!
Aw man, called out on my lack of give-a-crap about Punch-Out!!
He's right. You now must cover punch out immediately to appease the Nintendo Gods.
OK. How does sometime in September work for you?
That sounds great to me. Just gotta ask yourself WWSMD.
What Would Super Metroid Do? Well... definitely not crawl.
Wow... is next episode with the Virtual Boy 2.0? Those graphics look amazing!
Good, fair, treatment of Space Squash; keep on going semi-blind for us.
I like that the opponent's health is displayed in their corner on the far side of the arena. That's a cute detail.
“Timeless classic, Card Game” lol
Fact: Jeremy Parish is the best in the game.
I thought I knew all the Virtual Boy games. Always cool learning something new! Looks pretty good too. Thanks
Oh my gourd
I just caaaalled to saaay.
You're off the,
Space Squash Team.
A Stevie Wonder classic
@@yesticles for the win.
I just sat down and with some luck, beat this game. I think it's really good, if, yes, repetitive. I had a lot of fun playing through it, and I think it and Virtual Boy Wario Land are my favorite Virtual Boy games. This one in particular needs to be played on actual hardware, because the depth actually matters, as you note in the review.
I'm a simple man. I see a King Crimson reference, I click like.
It's a Squash in a space that is not quite starless and bible black
Damn, this actually looks super fun.
wow, Yoshi Touch and Go travelled through time to1995 apparently. Outside of that though, I still really enjoy watching these videos as it lets me learn about games I've never heard of before like this one!
This is a game I've wished to try for a while now.
Are the developers connected to Konami in someway? since the use the same sound effects Konami used for YuGiOh titles in later years on GBC/GBA
The single way they could've saved the Virtual Boy, & thus have it be remembered as an all-time classic, was to put the controls *on* the head-set itself 🙂 which would eliminate the need for both the clunky legs, as well as the disattached controller cord...making it exactly like a set of binoculars & allowing the player to roam & be free of having to stay in an awkward stationary position (usually a table-top) 😎
The original intent was for VB to be a headset, but (1) the processor wasn't powerful enough to prevent head-tracking lag, so that feature wouldn't have worked and (2) the FCC insisted it contain metal shielding due to radiation concerns, so the device became too heavy to wear.
Ah, that explains a few things.
And yes, as Oculus demonstrated with their kickstarter, and the early prototyping, even as recently as a decade ago, reliable head tracking was a non-trivial problem...
Then again, the point of having head tracking seems somewhat lost if the system can't really do any kind of meaningful 3d...
For it to have lived up to it's name it would've needed to be able to do at a minimum, flat-shaded 3d and head tracking, and (as we learnt in recent times) keep all that going at a solid 60 if not 90 fps...
Somehow, I think that's a big ask for a portable system from 1995.
In all honesty, it's a big ask even if you had something as powerful as the n64 doing the processing...
So what chance did the virtual boy really have?
@@JeremyParish "to wear"...? 🤔 couldn't it have been held just like a pair of binoculars? 😎 honestly, that would've made it look, act & feel a lot more dynamic than having your arms lower &/or holding a controller 🙂 imo 😊
Wow... you've just come up with the only video game hardware concept that's LESS ergonomic than the actual Virtual Boy. I'm impressed.
@@JeremyParish 🤔 how so? 🙂 I can imagine sitting back in a recliner or on a bed, etc. holding it to your face with buttons both above & below the console itself 🤗
They should have made this for the SNES.
Another game that would have really benefited from a 2-player head-to-head mode. But yeah... two people that own a VB, the same game, _and_ being at the same space at the same time, what would have been the chances of that occurring?
last time that happened; it summoned satan
I sure hope Richard Gene The Fishing Machine gets a nice rub from being featured in Virtual Boy Works
Love these Works series. Have you thought about doing Game & Watch Works? Keep up the good works.
This series concept is built around high-definition direct-feed capture, which isn't really possible with G&W-but I'll get to the G&W Gallery titles eventually.
This game doesn't look too bad, but I could definitely see the lengthy and repetitive campaign being an issue. I might still have to give it a shot in an emulator though, it certainly seems to have some charm at least.
i own this game...very cool one and not so common...playing it in small bursts is required to really appreciate it..just like every vb creation..lol
3:23 the similarities don't stop there: the character facing the camera on the boxart looks a looot like the "kiwis" from Jumping Flash... I assumed it was maybe the same artist for both games so I checked online who the artist was for Jumping Flash but they're only credited for having worked on only two games and those are Jumping Flash and its sequel... I looked at the instruction manual for Space Squash on planetvb to see if it credited the staff but it didn't. So I guess the resemblance is just one of those things after all?
It's a nice game, but the impossibility to save is bad.
I love your videos! Keep going!
I have to ask, do those blocks that flicker back and forth every frame look like that when playing on the hardware or do they end up ghosting? That was starting to give me a headache even with you showing the footage in grayscale!
There's less ghosting here than on Game Boy. It's a little rough on the eyes, but isn't Virtual Boy rough on the eyes?
This reminds of Room Ten on the c64 if it vastly expanded. Room Ten runs like treacle... czcams.com/video/zJWYTSe0t8A/video.html
Not sure if it was intentional, but that music in some of the game's early footage sounds a bit too close to "Silence" from Metroid, the theme that plays when you're near a major upgrade. Looking at his bio, I doubt Tanaka had anything to do with this game.
How expensive is this?
I think a bare cart would cost something like $40-50. Boxed would be closer to $100.
looks like a GBA game. Looks fun enough though.
Hmmm, seeing this makes me wish there was a Penguin Wars on Virtual Boy.
It's on Switch. Maybe see how it works with Labo VR!
This kinda seems like the Virtual Boy's equivalent to Volley Fire...
God, no. This one is fun.
