Pocket Bowling retrospective: Picking up a Virtual spare | Game Boy Works Color

- Virtual Boy Works ended on a slightly downbeat note with Virtual Bowling, a fine take on the 10-pin pastime by Athena that remains inaccessible to normal humans thanks to its alarming rarity and terrifyingly high price. Well, here's the happy twist coda: Pocket Bowling is a direct sequel to Virtual Bowling that carries forward many of the other game's core mechanics and design elements, but costs a LOT less and doesn't require a piece of fragile, hard-to-come-by equipment to enjoy. Sure, Game Boy Color can't support the immersive viewpoint and design of Virtual Bowling, but this captures the enjoyable core of the other game quite neatly. Let's hear it for small victories, eh?

I love the Gameboy and I love this channel.
This is one of those games that seems to have inspired the style of Wario Ware's microgames, with its jaunty music, simple but offbeat mechanics, and really unnecessarily intricate animated "Congratulations!" screens when you succeed.
...Or maybe I'm just reading too much into these things.
Definitly reading in. I actually recently beat the original Warioware and I have to say it really doesn't remind me of Pocket Bowling.

Great video otherwise, you always keep things to a high standard. I actually put together Warashi's GDRI entry, so I might be a bit too entrenched in this stuff, honestly. ^^;

Huh. Talking about virtual boy being gameboy's intended successor, I wonder how well it would have done as a handheld system?
And by that I mean if it had mostly the same core specs as the virtual boy, but without the 3d 'virtual reality' part. (which, let's face it even the n64 would've choked on trying to pull off, much less the virtual boy's hardware.)

Serious answer: the traditional shogi board is just made of wood, without any paint. No idea why this game went for GB-esque green, of all colors.
Weird that we're going to have a G&W Gallery 2 retrospective long before you get to G&WG1.

Love me some Shogi. As silly as this sounds, it's actually easier for me to wrap my mind around than traditional western chess due to the layout. It's easier for me to scope where everything on the board is since the pieces are flat, not to mention you don't have that pesky queen to deal with and the rook and bishop are limited to one each.

Watching the virtual boy clips, was it more powerful than the gba? I don't remember seeing such detailed pixel art on the advance. Great video as always.
Well, GBA used an ARM processor, so it's hard to make a direct comparison as ARM chips are optimized for specific functions. But VB had much higher resolution than any portable system prior to the PSP, so you definitely saw more detailed sprites in the best VB games than were possible on GBA.
Now I'm intrigued enough to consider buying a Virtual Bowling Repro cart, which would set me more than the price of a modern AAA game. Is it worth it?
Instead of giving a large amount of money to someone for a pirated game, I'd recommend picking up a FlashBoy+, which will let you sample homebrew games in addition to playing the expensive import rarities.

I think I'm going to continue waiting to play it until the Switch version is up to snuff.

After a while I couldn't hear "Shougi Ou" as anything else but a weird Yu-Gi-Oh! knockoff.
Well, the Ou is the same kanji as that in "Yuugiou," as you might recognize in the latter's logo. So you're not totally off! It means king - Game King or King of Games in yuugiou's case, Shougi King in shougiou's
