Panic Bomber retrospective: 99 red bomb-balloons | Virtual Boy Works #09

- Another perfectly decent game appears on Virtual Boy, this time starring Bomberman. It's not your standard Bomberman fare, but nevertheless it's a pretty solid rendition of Puyo Puyo with a bit of Bomberman flair (or should that be flare?). Fortunately, this game is a little less difficult to track down play nowadays than its VB contemporaries...
4:56 “Bombs are not junk.”
Important safety tip, thanks Jeremy.
Do not place bombs in your car for the sake of making a "junk in the trunk" joke, it will end badly for all involved
Because of the extremely finite size of the VB collection, this series is a bittersweet endeavour. I very much enjoy the content, but each game is so much closer to completing the line up.
Can't wait for more obscurity and snarky insight.
I'm quite surprised on how well animated those Virtual boy games are, need to check those myself
Yeah me too they look so smooth
Love that high resolution display, and monochrome graphics means they got a lot of mileage out of the two or so megs of ROM.
I don’t know if it’s a 16 vs 32 bit sprite limitation thing, but animating characters out of components is a neat technique that you even see today.
Just catching up on your latest videos, and I gotta say that chiptune deconstruction of the usual ending theme slaps hard! Love it!
That animation is fantastic. Even lots of stuff on Saturn wasn’t that smooth. It’s a shame the display was so flawed, you can see the potential in this hardware to have been something special.
This is probably my favourite game on the Virtual Boy. It just has an essential replayability that other games on the platform tend to lack.
The saddest thing about the Virtual Boy is how it seems to have attracted a lot of pixel artists who wanted to show off how fancy they could make 8-bit graphics look. Check out how smoothly the opponent portraits here animate, and then think about how nobody friggin' saw them because of how successful the system wasn't.
Bomberman is definitely one video game character to have at least one game released on every console, INCLUDING the Virtual Boy.
Except 3DS, it was cancelled :(
What a shame, a 3DS Bomberman game would have been neat...
Love seeing Bomberman dab on the menu screen.
Really loving this series, it's very much making me wish these games had come to 3DS. Looking forward to future videos! Worth noting that this video seems to be missing from the Virtual Boy Works playlist so I nearly missed it.
These videos are a god send at times like these. So much nostalgia and insight!
My mind: "Wow that's a nice little Puyo clone for the Virtual Boy"
My heart: "he dab"
Love the videos, i've seen most of these virtual boy works and have yet
to hear mention of their natural predecessor, the Tomytronic 3d, in this
case the game "Sky Attack". The game Dogfight is quite possibly the
most addictive game i have ever played.
Very good content.
Watching thru these videos for the first time and thinking damn, Wii U actually has a death date set now 😂😭
Love the GB chiptune preview theme at the end.
I
absolutely
L O V E this game! Panic Bomber on Virtual Boy is one of my favorite puzzle games, full stop. I knew about the PC Engine CD version, but I didn't actually know it was on Super Famicom and NEO•GEO! Probably gonna go important a Super Famicom cart of it soon >v>
I got the Wii U release of the PC Engine CD version because of this episode
I was unready for J. Parish to drop the a-bomb at 2:44 . The rest of these videos are on such an even keel that it is more shocking than any angry video game nerd unloading all their vitriol ever could be.
Really? That phrase seems more rude than obscene IMO.
@@JeremyParish Imagine Mr. Rogers saying the word, and you've got the feeling I was trying to convey. I watch your videos because of the wholesomeness in addition to the excellent info.
A-bomb...
They put in multiple selectable tilesets in the options? That's some good foresight in game design. I bet most companies nowadays wouldn't make a concession to branding like that.
Most companies then wouldn't have either.
6:34 Is Bomberman *_dabbing!?_*
One of the VB games I had. The 3D effect for this one was GREAT
Is there gonna be any Gameboy Works episodes coming soon? I dont wanna sound like im complaining cause i enjoy your content regardless, im just kinda missing Gameboy Works. its what i originally subscribed for when you started the project.
Not until VBW is done. It is taking the place of Game Boy Works this year.
@@JeremyParish Fair enough, keep doing your thing man i can wait for Gameboy works return.
Puyo Puyo a puzzle game based on Kitsy Cat more specially the Kitsy Cat cartoon "Falling Feline"
This game was probably my favorite on the Virtual Boy. I played it a ton. The soundtrack was great too, possibly the best on the system for me. Was there ever an official US release for it? My copy was Japanese. Can't remember if I bought it off eBay or in the store. I want to say I got all my VB games in the store for like $5 or less apiece (including Jack Bros), but I'm not sure. I had to figure out the menus by trial and error.
i have the PC Engine one on the Wii U. along with the Virtual Boy version through Homebrew. game is fun but better defeat the opponent quick because once their bomb power reaches 10 you will spend 30 minutes or 1 hour on a match....
Also on PSP, FYI.
Another VB game that I own. I really liked this game, even though I wish it had multiplayer. It'll be interesting to see the 3D Tetris episode. Now that game was awful.
And the timing couldn't be better, anytime now it should be appearing in my mail box for VB, and I've got a nice box and manual to complete the deal. ;) I had this on NeoGeo, least fun there as it's arcade sadist, but had it one PCE CD 20 years ago and it was excellent there. I totally forget the rules so I'll get slapped around some unless it has a fun endless mode.
This one always seemed like a fun one, but man.. the lack of a link cable at the time really hurt it (like with a lot of other VB games).
I never played this version got more than 10minutes tbh. Not my style and I brought it because it was cheap rather than anything else.
Poor Wii U, I never bothered to buy you. At this point in my life I would much rather have a Virtual Boy. Of course, a wealthy version of myself would have purchased both on launch day.
I intend to get a flip grip for my switch. I saw it shown at the end of the video. Do you have a link that if someone buys something through that link you get paid? Since I intend to buy one I'd be glad to order it through an affiliate link
mushy No need for an affiliate link - Retronauts gets a cut of every Flip Grip sold.
6:34 is he dabbing???
Good day Mr Parish,
In this video you mention something called 'we you'. I've asked all the console owners, wizened elder gamers and industry insiders I know and none of them had ever heard of it. In fact, the vast majority said they were certain it didn't exist and thats it's probably a misunderstanding (or deliberate obfuscation).
My scouring of the internet has never resulted in more than another page about personal pronouns.
I think you may be onto something....
Was the virtual boy still a 4 shade system like gameboy?
In terms of the raw graphical output, that's what they went with. But the VB's screen brightness had variable intensity that gave it the appearance of more varied tones-something that unfortunately doesn't come across in my direct-feed recordings.
@@JeremyParish interesting, thank you!
how come the bombs don't always destroy the stuff on your screen?
Bombs can only destroy other bombs and garbage blocks. They don't clear away unmatched pieces-only the big decker bombs do that. Sorry if I didn't make that clear!
@@JeremyParish I think I get it, I just struggle with the idea of bomberman bombs that only blow up certain things. It looks weird!
