Odigitria Monastery is a small male monastery, located 66 km south of Heraklion and 13 km southeast from Matala.
The Monastery was founded in 14th century by hermits and was built as fotress, which can be still recognised due to remaining parts of walls and Xopateras Tower. The monastery suffered extensive damages during Turkish occupation and 2nd World War. Odigitria Monastery has rich history and was significant place of revolt against Ottomans. Nowadays it’s peaceful place opened to public.
The name of monastery is probably related to the copy of icon of Monastery Odigin in Constantinople, painted by the Evangelist Luke. The two-aisled church in the courtyard of Odigitria Monastery is dedicated to Dormiotion of the Virgin Mary and the Apostles Peter and Paul. However, there used to be third aisle dedicated to Saint Fanourios that was demolished.
Among others, the monastery owns also church in nearby Agiofarago Gorge - Saint Anthony and the Chapel of Panagia in Martsalo Canyon.
