Curry chicken varies around the world, from home to home. This easy curry poultry recipe has a splash of coconut milk to make it taste creamy and delicious. In Malaysia or Singapore, we serve it with rice but it is also delicious with bread.
This easy curry chicken is the standard curry chicken you will get in most restaurants in Malaysia and Singapore. Rich in coconut milk and spices, this curry chicken is a must try. As this chicken is marinated in curry paste before cooking enhances the taste of the meat itself.
Can I use onions instead of shallots?
Yes, you may. Shallots are generally more intense in taste and they are also spicier compared to onions. The best substitute would be red onions. If you can't find any, you may also opt for yellow onions.
What type of curry powder to use?
In Malaysia and Singapore, you may find curry powders sold specifically for meat or seafood. In this recipe, meat curry powder is used. You may also substitute with any curry powder mixture which contains more chilli powder. Sometimes, dried curry leaves are also added to the curry powder mixture.
Can candlenut be omitted?
Candlenuts are added to thicken the curry. You may remove it from this recipe if you prefer. Otherwise, substitute candlenuts with macadamia nuts.
Milk or yoghurt to substitute coconut milk
In the Southeast Asian region, milk and yoghurt aren't a common choice to be added into curries. Instead, coconut milk is often used since they grow abundantly locally. If you do not prefer coconut milk, you may opt to substitute it with 300 ml milk or 250 ml yoghurt. Do note that the taste will be different but it will not spoil the taste.
Curry chicken in the slow cooker
Cooking this curry chicken recipe in a slow cooker is possible. Simply prepare the recipe in a slow cooker and cook the dish for 4 hours on high or 6 hours on low for tender curry chicken.

+Carol “tixylix47” Hooker Thank you so much for trying out this recipe!!! Did you kids try other recipes :D
So this is the first recipe I have made since I began subscribing! I don't get to cook a lot, and it can be really difficult to find a lot of ingredients since I now live in a really small town! But I somehow managed to get my hands on most of the ingredients for this recipe, and I really wanted to make a good meal for dinner. I made it and omg I was in heaven. It's. SO. GOOD. I wish I had the time to make it more often! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
Hello Nyonya Cooking, I’ve tried/copied dozens of recipe on CZcams and this is the first time i wrote a comment on a recipe i tried or copy... I just wanna say it’s so simple and absolutely delicious.
Thank you
OMG! I'm becoming your fan. I watch all of your recipes. this week I'm going to try this for me and my son.
I just made this and it's soooooo good! I mixed the soy sauce and curry powder then pour it over the chicken just to make sure the marinade was distributed evenly. And I substituted Brazil nuts for candlenuts and added some kaffir lime leaves
I just made this dish .. It's beautiful. Smells gorgeous. I could not find lemon grass in my local grocery store. Yet it's such a beautiful dish. Thank you..
I rarely made any comments on youtube but I feel that I have to do it here. Moved to Europe a few years back and survived by watching your videos! I tried a few recipes and all succeeded. Though far away from home, the food makes me feel just like home!!! Thank you for the wonderful videos you’ve shared with us!

I spent a month in Malaysia trying all sorts of variations cuisines from Malay, Chinese, Indian and all the fusions you can make out of the three. I absolutely fell in love with the food and now im craving it back here in Europe. That led me to your channel. Great job you did! Thanks for sharing this amazing recipe so now I can make it and transport into the amazing South-East Asia. :)

Now, I recalled this dish. My Mom side is fr Malacca Nyonya decend. I remembered eating this with either white rice, bread and even plain boiled beehoon. Lovely 👍👍👍

Gahhh.. Looks delicious. Glad to see you back!
Making this tonight, thanks!!
I just made this and also your roti canal and had it together for dinner me and my family loved it! So full of flavour
I just made a curry loosely based on this recipe! I've never used nuts in my curry paste before so thought I'd give it a shot. I used Macadamias as I didn't have candlenuts. I think it helped thicken the curry and give it a slight nuttiness (obviously haha).
Also, I added about half a can of coconut cream (plus the coconut milk) and it made for a very indulgent/lemak curry :)
Adrian Smith if you can't find candlenuts, unroasted unsalted cashew nuts are a good substitute
I don't know how to cook but I cook my first curry chicken with your video'! It's awesome! Thanks for making it so simple for beginner.

Thanks for the recipe, finally made this curry after watching the video for so many times. I added a tiny bit of lime into my curry (less than a teaspoon). I think it added a very pleasant brightness that was much needed. I might add a bit of asam jawa next time to keep it authentic.
Thanks for the tip. What about Adam keping. Can add that as well?

Hi Charlie, Nyonya refers to our founder (the host in this video) actually. The term refers to the women of the Peranakan community. You can read more about our work here: www.nyonyacooking.com/aboutus
I lived in Singapore for a year for college. Me and friends would stop by food courts and have amazing Malaysian dishes. It was one of my favorite international cuisines. Unfortunately I am in Singapore no more and where I stay I don't have access to tasty Malaysian food. You make my memories come alive through your videos. I keep drooling over all the food you make. Keep up the good work and looking forward to tastier future videos.

I'm currently in the process of making this for my dinner. I've just blended all the spices and it smells amazing. I can't wait to cook it all later tonight.
Shawn Ellis Andddd...how was it??
It was amazing! I was then inspired to make it for a few friends at a dinner party and they absolutely loved it. Thank you so much for putting up the lovely recipe - you've made a complicated dish easy to follow and straight forward (and helped me to reminisce about growing up in Malaysia around the ages of 3 to 11).
wah.. simple jugak cara masakan ini. Kebiasaan kalau saya masak kari, tumis dulu buah pelaga, cengkih, kulit kayu manis, daun pandan, daun kari, serai, halia, lengkuas dan bawang2 tadi.. lepas tu bancuh serbuk kari dengan air, barulah dituah ke dalam bahan yang ditumis... kalau tak buat macam tu, takut adunan kari tak benar2 masak..
True, ini juga kebiasaan aya memasak kari..
Udak Dangdut this is malaysian version
nomnom gonna try this i love curried chicken thankyou
