    So one comment I will make.
    Where I live, you're required by code to install 130mph shingles. There are only 2 3-Tab shingles that can be installed due to this limit, Malarkey Alaskan being the most popular.
    However, most high end architectural shingles can exceed this. In some nearby cities, they go as high as 150mph requirements, which only a select few architectural shingles can manage.

    I compared the weight of my new Atlas Architectural shingle to my old 3 Tab shingle: The Architectural shingle is much heavier.
    * It was difficult choosing a color of shingle because I was stuck on the color of the old black shingle. I am satisfied I choose a different color that blends well with my entire property.

    Are Architectural shingles more energy efficient than 3-Tab shingles? I read, "Architectural shingles are engineered to remain cooler than traditional shingles by offering greater light deflection. They also provide added insulation, which reduces heat transference between your home and the outdoors, resulting in lower heating and cooling bills." I lived in both a homes with Architectural and 3-Tab shingles. From personal experience I would say the architectural was cooler. However, my experience is limited and I would like to get your point of view. Thanks.

    Not necessarily true, I just went through Hurricane Ida sustained winds of 150mph gusts of 180. The house was pounded for at least 12 hours, obviously the wind only peaked at this speed for a couple hours. I bought my grandparents house when they passed a couple years ago. It is a 25-year-old plus 3-tab and only lost a few single tabs here and there. My grandfather put on the roof and hand nailed ring shank nails with 4 nails per 3-tab. My neighbors all had way more damage including next door the 10 year old architectural lost a whole side of his roof. One neighbor I went on her roof and helped her put on tarps because the damage was so extensive. She has a 3-tab which was only 12 years old but was put on by one of those budget crews that did the roof in a day with the nail guns and I saw only 2 nails per 3-tab. Both neighbors had to completely get a new roof. I only had to do minor repairs .So, it really seems to make a difference on the way and how many nails were used more so than the type of shingle, at least from my experience.

    • @DigitalRoofingInnovations
      @DigitalRoofingInnovations  Před 2 lety +4

      You are absolutely correct! In most hurricane areas, there are supposed to be 6 nails per shingle in today's building codes. 4 nails per shingle is the minimum, but never 2.
      You are absolutely correct, a bad crew installed them. But if both are installed correctly, MOST architectural shingles will out perform a 3-Tab

Roofer in Toronto Ontario says I have at least 3 more years, but I’ve had several singles replaced due to windstorms throughout the past few years. Honestly, most all the shingle manufacturers are pretty good, it's the contractor that matters the most. Make sure they install all new drip edge, underlayment, do a deck inspection, and install new flashing. The install will matter much more than the shingle manufacturer.
      With that said, I really like GAF, Certainteed, and Malarky but think they are all really good.

    Hi, your video was very helpful and thorough, but I was hoping you can answer a question about whether it's recommended to install an underlayment (ie. synthetic felt) more or less for architectural shingles vs 3 Tab or its equally recommended for both. I live in the Toronto area and the winters are a consideration.

    • @DigitalRoofingInnovations
      @DigitalRoofingInnovations  Před 3 lety +2

      Susan, underlayment, where it be tar paper or synthetic is a heavily debated topic. I would recommend putting it down, but I know many contractors don’t do that in Canada on very steep roofs.
      We have always installed it, but it’s more of a secondary barrier if your roof is torn off due to wind than anything else.

      Architectural shingles are about 50 percent heavier than the 3-tab kind. The base mat on an architectural shingle is thicker than that on a 3-tab shingle. This makes the architectural shingle a sturdier roofing material. Architectural shingles also comprise stronger adhesives, and they have more granules on their top surface. They are also made from asphalt of a finer quality than 3-tab shingles.
