I went with a black roof, black trim, gutters, garage doors, black beading around my windows, and a black metal door to compliment my cream-stone and brick home here in Texas. I fell in love with this color scheme on a trip to Paris many years ago. Now it seems to be all the rage. Who knew??🤩 Some have commented on the heat a black roof generates. Our home is wrapped in foam insulation, and we have a heat pump and is always comfortable even during the past two years of seasonal extremes. Our builder was Couto Homes, the best in our area.
I watched this video a couple of weeks ago and jotted down “certainteed burnt sienna” as I have a red brick facade on front and beige siding on the rest of the house. I sat down with my contractor yesterday and was happy to see this as an option so I chose it. I appreciate your suggestion and hope I made the right call!
I prefer black as well. I just had my home done in Owens Corning High Definition Duration architectural shingle in black onyx. It looks great & I’ve already gotten lots of complements on it.
Fixing to reroof using Malarkey Vista AR. Will be using the Weathered Wood... it's a "safe" color choice knowing I'll be looking at it for the next 20 years. Unfortunately, Malarkey has decided to start making most of their color schemes using multiple contrasting shades built into their shingles... gives a roof a "pixelated" look... definitely DO NOT like the aesthetics of those roofs. My roofer did provide addresses of homes with the various shades I was possibly interested in... that helped tremendously. Thanks for your great videos, knowledge and advice...
I have a dark blue house but not too dark and white trim and I chose Owens Corning Black Onyx. It’s been one week I’ve had the roof done and It turned out great. I don’t regret it at all but I wish I could have had a chance at using that app or program that shows your house with the shingles on it! that sounds like it would really help if you we’re struggling to pick a color. I didn’t really have that issue so all good. Thanks for the video!
I’ve decided to have a black roof installed this spring. My house is a ranch style, hip roof and has dark frame windows with security bars. The siding is a light tan; with rock at the bottom around the fountain. Have had two roof’s ( I’m old ) both in the brown tones. It looked fine. The change in contrast will make the biggest difference. Was surprised at the people who chose black, since I’d already decided to go with black before watching. When I drive around, I don’t see very many black roofs. Thanks
You don’t see many black roofs because that’s the worst color you could possibly pick for your roof it’s not going to repel the sun and your house is going to be very hot in the summertime
FYI: Live in CA and the temps can get over 100+. Have lived in my house for 30 year’s. Upgraded insulation, and plan on adding a product that blocks the heat in the attic, Eagle shield. Also have a whole house fan. Fantastic, to remove the heat in the evening. Also, thinking about adding a solar attic fan that works during the daytime. My father built my home and it isn’t a track home, it’s custom build. I’ve done the research and from what I found the temperature difference is a very slight. Depending on many factors a black roof is completely fine. Like all things it’s important to do your own due diligence. Thanks
My roofing contractor gave me local addresses of roofs he installed in the two colors I was deciding between. If your roofer can’t do this, you need to find someone else. BTW, I’m signing the contract with him today.
Yes-one color was missed. I have a 1967 salmon pink brick house. I’m considering the Midnight Plum color from Owens Corning, and either Traditional Blue or Tuxedo Grey gutters from Spectra Gutter Systems.
Hi You asked for favorite color shingles. My house is warm cream brick---we have selected Timberline HD Hickory. I was happy to hear this is very similar to Burnt Sienna color which you recommended for cream house. I hope you are reading this and able to provide any feedback quickly.
Thanks for the awesome, educative and very comprehensive video. My favorite shingles color also is Heather Blend. My house wall colors are lighter shade Beige body paint color. So, hopefully the contrast looks good with Heather Blend color. Keep up the great job you are doing for the CZcams community. I appreciate it.
Our home is a dark red brick with different color shades of bricks, kind of mottled. We were thinking of a black roof. Also, if you drive around and see a house with a roof that you like, it's much easier to find the house on Google Earth and get a screen capture of it from their Street View. That way you don't look suspicious driving around taking photos of people's homes. 😄
What Certainteed Landmark roofing color would you recommend with an orange brick home (think 1950’s brick- not red brick) with a warm brown/gray trim color?
I have a beige earthtone home with beige natural brick. I want a white shingle roof. Probably not a popular color with the color of my home or with many people, but I live in a hot southern state and I am thinking about energy efficiency. A darker color roof may look appealing but it helps to hold heat inside the home once the sun goes down. And I thought it would be cool for it to look as if I have snow on my roof.
My house is light almond brick, white doors and trim. Garage white garage door and light grey entry door. The shed is an almond vinyl door is light grey. I would love new doors and color.
We are Texans and because of a hailstorm in June we're getting another new roof. The last one was in 2009, and, as you're aware, the cost has soared since then. In 2009 I selected Weathered Wood but later decided it looked too much like our street color, just plain ol' asphalt gray. So this time I contemplated changing to something else. We even toured some of the neighborhood to see other roofs. Well, guess what? After all that, I'm picking Weathered Wood again. Our home is a light stone with shades of gray and a little bit of rust in it. Our trim is Country Blue. I was afraid to try any other color. At least I know I can live with this choice.
I just picked out weathered wood also for our home. It's beige with cream trim and some grey stone in front. I like dark roofs but was afraid to go darker. Hope we like it, they are putting it on soon!
I have a red brick house with a forest green door and garage doors. Beige window trim and gutters. What would be your recommendation of roof shingle in andmark pro series?
I look at all brown or lighter colored roofs in my neighborhood and all show really bad weathering/streaking (they just look dirty) after several years of weather, pollen, smog (light, but always present), sap, other contaminants. I think that is why black is so popular in the poll, it has same weathering, but beign black, those dark streaking stains aren't observable from the curb/street. I want to go with that heather he noted for my light tan/beige vinyl siding home, but not sure after seeing other dark/medium brown roofs looknig a bit ratty on nearby homes.
I have a ballatyne brick on my house and planning to go with the Malarkey Legacy Brilliant Black colour. Am I crazy with all the heat it can absorb? For that reason also considering their ivory mist or Silverwood…..
I just had a new roof put in...Owens Corning Duration shingles in Amber. Color turned out to be lighter than I expected and now having a hard time deciding which shade of beige to go with for the house...yellow, orange, or gray understones.
Pure red brick facade, with white siding, (faded) black shutters. Has to be GAF. Torn between HDZ Pewter, Charcoal, Canadian Driftwood, and Appalachian Sky. Your expert opinion would be greatly appreciated! Hover app makes me feel like the Canadian Driftwood ties the black shutters to the red brick really nicely. Wish I could paste the pic.
I have a dark red house with white trim and white garage doors. Last time I went with a light gray. I need to replace the roof again because of hail damage. Not sure what color would look the best. Light gray seems to be what keeps the house cooler in summer.
Light tan in some lights almost looks like it’s yellowish but it’s light tan it has weathered wood gaf now and id like to replace it with desert sand from tamko(we live at the beach) shutters are blue, we need to upgrade those and the door which will be blue or wood. But they don’t have desert sand in gaf timberline and I want the better shingle so I was thinking of doing shakewood? Or barkwood? But I don’t know it’s tough…
Hi! I have wicker siding and a red/orange brick. Getting a new roof. Going with atlas pristine. Weathered wood. It’s safe. Plus I have no shade. My house gets so hot!
My house is dark brown on the upper siding with cream trim & cream lower level on a 2 story house l; The cottage is also cement block with cream exterior & dark brown nearest the roof line. I was thinking of using GAF Hickory that has dark brown & reddish rust hues (which is the darkest color & I think would look stunning) or Shakewood which is a light brown 3-tone with a little rust tones to match but contrast & not retain as much heat ; because I live in Arizona & it is HOT, some think I should use Golden Amber which I think will look white from a distance & would look weird. What do you think ?
Most "black" shingles are actually a charcoal color. . . .and is a very classic "Tuxedo" look on a red brick, hip roof executive house. . . .meets most HOA color schemes.
I am planning to use Owens Corning High Definition Duration Shasta White, and my roofer is trying to talk me out of it. My house is light colored brick. I will be changing trim colors to get some contrast. What do you think?
We are in the throes of choosing a roof color for our 1950s orange brick ranch (not orange red). I’m thinking darker, multi shaded shingles would work, but I know basically nothing about these things. Any help/ ideas would be appreciated.
I am in Texas Home built late 70s brick is redish with beige, charcoal and black.. I have black trim and gutters and siding is light beige (thinking of changing siding color to gray beige and trip a little lighter to charcoal gray..) Looking at timberline charcoal? Not sure if that will be too dark or if pewter gray would be better? Home is 1600 sq ft and 1 story
Here in NY we have clay color siding. Not a tan clay or dark gray clay but a very neutral clay. We have something resembling a weathered wood roof now but are considering black. I'm hoping to find a black that's warm toned not cool. Any suggestions?
Manufacturers make different colors available for different areas. You should check the manufacturer's website to see what colors are available where you live. I prefer shingles that contract with the siding color. Dark shingle on light siding and visa versa. Personal preference.
And, what if you live in an area (like Texas) that can have 100+ temps over the summer, isn't a light color better for not absorbing all that heat? Especially for 3 story townhomes where the shingle are not so visible.
@@FearIsaLiar Understand, and tiles may not suit most houses due to the weight. But I was referring to just the terracotta color, there're shingles and even metal roof that come in the terracotta color these days (although metal roofs are expensive also but the price may come down eventually).
Just got a new roof on our house. Got a lighter shade of tan. My neighbors just had a black roof put on theirs. Looks very nice, but on a typical summer day in Texas, theyll be able to use their roof for a giant frying pan, no thanks.
@karlarentz7694 You nailed it 100%!! The roof is done! I chose Oyster Gray, and when the roofer ripped open that first bundle, I wanted to cry, thought I really messed this up. It's on the roof and it is gorgeous!! And when the sun is on the roof, it literally sparkles! I can see it coming down the road! Yes, some blues, little silver, iridescent like the inside of an oyster shell. It enhances the sage color (which I never liked) of my siding to the point I like the sage now. I asked my roofer, he said nobody hardly picks that color. So glad I went with that instead of pewter gray for my house. Thank you! 😊
what color roof shingle?? cream (not beige) siding with black window shutters . A sprawling ranch - no dormers- lots of roof without anything to break it up but 2 peaks and a chimney.
One thing to consider about a black roof is that black holds heat. The sun beats down on your roof all day every day and makes it hot, in turn making your house hotter. That makes your air conditioning work harder and costs more to cool your house. Or if you have an older air conditioner that isn't up to snuff or even don't have air conditioning, you might be uncomfortable when it's hot outside
I watched a video on here from a shingle contractor in Florida. During the hottest part of a 90 degree day the black shingle was 160 degrees, the light colored grey was 156.
@@peterdallman4550 did that roofer video test the temp on a very light almost white shingle?? That's what I currently have and I wonder if light or dark color really makes a big difference. Thanks
@@user-gk2ut8mc5e In the middle of a 94 degree day in Florida the light gray (very light colored) shingle was something like 6-8 degrees cooler than the black shingle.
@@peterdallman4550 So there is some difference but not enough to continue to use such a light colored shingle. Currently the very light shingle on a white house does not offer much contrast/curb appeal. And since I am having them install a complete ridge vent because it currently has a partial, it should help eliminate more heat from the attic space. Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.
I'm going to do vinyl siding on my house, probably a darker grey, not very dark, but also not light grey. I will go with OC Durations. Trying to figure out what color shingles. Will consider anything that isn't black.
Maybe too much green, but... if you choose another color, then you have 4 colors on your house. That could be a little overwhelming to look at. If your roofer offers a brand that has a color called Thunderstorm Gray, take a look at that. You may like it.
Loved your video on choosing shingle colors. First time home owner and I have never had to do this. My house is tall; it’s a white 2 story colonial. The shutters are slate blue/deep grey. What color or color choices do you recommend?
My beach house inspired house is a bright blue green with white trim and coral door. Do you think Atlas Cool Sand or Owens Corning Amber would look better with it for a sandy look?
Great videos, just found your channel. Framing complete on our Craftsman home in South Carolina. Need to choose shingle brand and color. House colors are: main lap siding SW Dill green, shake accent siding SW Haven which is a lighter green, white windows, light brown trim, and dark brown rain gutters. Liking the Certainteed Landmark Pro Sunrise Cedar. Any help to get the shingle color correct would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I have a brown English Tudor with white & blue accents. What color would you suggest. I am leaning towards Heather Blend but not sure of CertainTeed. I also like Brownwood & Teak by OC.
I have a white stone home . Not bright white but with a very slight yellow limestone undertone throughout. Which makes it a warm. Gutters and doors are Spanish moss. Deep brown. Siding is Nantucket dune which we could change if needed. What would be the best color matches ?
The colors that are available here will be different than what is available in your region. You can go onto any of the shingle company's websites and enter your zip code and it will show you what's available in your area.
I have a house in southern Florida, After hurricane Ian, I am finally ready to put on a new roof. The house color is gold ( Florida has some wild colors) anyway the current roof color is a light grey. We are considering painting it a creamy white with dark brow trim, any suggestions for roof color? Heat absorption is an issue. Thanks
What Certainteed Manour house colour would you recommend for a white house? Trying to avoid black and go with a grey. Would you recommend stonegate gray?
I live in central florida, my house is bright sky blue with white trim. My roofer recommened black oynx by owens corning but im concerned it would cause my electric bill to skyrocket. He assured me it shouldnt have an effect because they are going to add significantly more ventilation then my roof already has, and i do have some amount of tree shade dyring the day. What are your thoughts on dark roofs in hot climates? He also recommended the estate gray but i really love the look of the black woth the blue and white
We have storm damage to our house and need to replace the roof. The house has pale yellow siding which we cannot replace in the near future. It also has dark brown shudders but we will likely go with a different color for them or remove them. I’m wondering about a gray roof but don’t want too strong of a contrast with the pale yellow. What shade (or other colors) would you suggest?
I think you would like Heather Blend by CertainTeed. But if Thunderstorm Gray is available in your area, that would look good, too (after you take off the brown shutters). Let me know what you think.
I have beige siding, my shingles are a brown, my siding has lightened and due to the sun, S-W, my deck can reach temperatures of 110-129, all my black light fixtures are now an ugly ashen color. No way would I put black shingles on my roof, so I got to find a brownish shingle to match my garage roof. My gutters are a dark brown.
Our house is white trim and brown brick with a millennium color stager stacked chimney. On our roof we wanted to go with Natural Wood Malarkey AR Vista shingle. Is this acceptable? Thanks for your knowledge on roofs.
Thanks for your video! We have a cabin with weathered brown siding and we’re needing a new roof. I typically don’t love brown roofs, what would you recommend to pair with weather natural wood colored siding?
That depends on where you live. Every manufacturer makes different colors for different regions. Go to each manufacturer's website to see the colors they offer where you live.
We are building a new house and we are using mitten brownstone for board & batten and vinyl siding, Margaux beige stone veneer. Builder has asked us to choose between gag charcoal or Canadian driftwood shingle. Can you suggest which one should we pick
I have a light gray house with white trim. trying to decide between pewter gray or weathered wood. I want it to match but also have some warmth to it as we have natural brick in front of the house
@@homesteadroofing thanks for replying, unfortunately that is not a color offered by me. In Wisconsin. Very helpful! I have a light ,faded yellow siding house thats always had some shade of a brown shingle on it.. we need to redo the entire roof so I was considering other colors..why? becuz I would like to have a better degree of reflectivity and a cooler overall roof becuz we get hit by the sun head on in my area.. the attic gets HOT! anything that would reduce temps such as a Better ,more reflective color and of course, we are going to add extra vents to get the heat out...
I have a White House, I’m torn between Certainteed coastal blue or black-please help!
My whole neighborhood has black roofs. York PA.
We have a log home, new construction that is dark brown. Looking for advice on what color of shingle to use.
I'm not convinced that there's any substantial evidence that a darker color makes your house hotter.
red brick with white trim
I don't care what color of the house walls are, I just love the terracotta / Spanish tile color.
Most can't afford that
@@FearIsaLiar Understand, and tiles may not suit most houses due to the weight. But I was referring to just the terracotta color, there're shingles and even metal roof that come in the terracotta color these days (although metal roofs are expensive also but the price may come down eventually).
My color house is orange brick
My HOA requires weather wood. Owen’s Corning doesn’t have this color, but they have driftwood. How does that compare in the Duration true def series?
It's basically the same.
Just got a new roof on our house. Got a lighter shade of tan. My neighbors just had a black roof put on theirs. Looks very nice, but on a typical summer day in Texas, theyll be able to use their roof for a giant frying pan, no thanks.
helpful!
I'm going crazy between oyster gray and pewter gray. Sage colonial with black front door, shutters and white trim.
Oyster gray is very cool and shows blue tones
I keep using Estate Gray..on my tan ranch house... Its very hot here...not sure what else would look nice
@@peterdallman4550 Good info her... thanks
What is your thought of pacific wave or bascyne blue on light grey/ light blue house with dark blue shutters and doors
We don't ever install those colors here. Almost no one here wants a blue roof.
cornmeal yellow house with hunter green shutters and white trim
please let me know best roof color - i was looking at hunter green from GAF but maybe too much green?
Maybe too much green, but... if you choose another color, then you have 4 colors on your house. That could be a little overwhelming to look at. If your roofer offers a brand that has a color called Thunderstorm Gray, take a look at that. You may like it.
Loved your video on choosing shingle colors. First time home owner and I have never had to do this. My house is tall; it’s a white 2 story colonial. The shutters are slate blue/deep grey. What color or color choices do you recommend?
I meant to say what color or color choices do you recommend for the roof shingles? I live in Minnesota. Thank you sooo much!
Thunderstorm Gray would look great! Also CertainTeed Georgetown Gray
Question : Does a darker shingle hold more heat than a lighter colored ones ?
Possibly. The sub-surface of both is black asphalt and tar, so it could be about the same.
What about a medium gray siding would black look good
My beach house inspired house is a bright blue green with white trim and coral door. Do you think Atlas Cool Sand or Owens Corning Amber would look better with it for a sandy look?
what color would be good for a white brick home ???
Almost any color will work.
Weathered wood 😊
Great videos, just found your channel. Framing complete on our Craftsman home in South Carolina. Need to choose shingle brand and color. House colors are: main lap siding SW Dill green, shake accent siding SW Haven which is a lighter green, white windows, light brown trim, and dark brown rain gutters. Liking the Certainteed Landmark Pro Sunrise Cedar. Any help to get the shingle color correct would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Feel free to send a photo of your house, in full sun, to me at info@homesteadroofingcolorado.com
White house with blue roof?
I have a brown English Tudor with white & blue accents. What color would you suggest. I am leaning towards Heather Blend but not sure of CertainTeed. I also like Brownwood & Teak by OC.
Heather Blend is my favorite color. It's what I have on my own house.
Thanks
Green
I can recommend a roofer in Orlando for you to talk to about this if you would like.
Let me know what you think.
i have a weathered hand split cedar shake shingle ranch house what would you recommend? currently black asphalt.....Thanks
That sounds like a good option
I think you would like Georgetown Gray also.
@@homesteadroofing thanks for replying, unfortunately that is not a color offered by me. In Wisconsin. I think I like the weatherwoood but in some pictures it looks brown and some it looks like a warm gray. I want to keep the appearance warm and neutral which is why I'm nervous about the pewter gray.
I have a two story home built in 1802 surrounded by mature treess. What color would you choose for a tan/yellow home with large white columns in the front?
Thunderstorm gray is a good color for that color house
My house is limestone. I choose Corning Owen terra cotta shingles and will paint the fascia and sofit the terra cotta color shade too (but little bit darker). What do you think?
Very helpful! I have a light ,faded yellow siding house thats always had some shade of a brown shingle on it.. we need to redo the entire roof so I was considering other colors..why? becuz I would like to have a better degree of reflectivity and a cooler overall roof becuz we get hit by the sun head on in my area.. the attic gets HOT! anything that would reduce temps such as a Better ,more reflective color and of course, we are going to add extra vents to get the heat out... I;d Never consider a black roof any more than Id consider a black interior or outer car color in black when living in a Hot region...
with a light, faded, yellow vinyl siding house, what would u recommend?
Thunderstorm gray is nice with yellow siding.
Hi, thank you so much for this video! I have a light yellow 20yo house with dark green shutters and light grey/green roof. I will replace my roof and shutters and was wondering if dark grey (Atlas Pewter) would fit well. Not sure with the light yellow house. Also our porch and deck are brown, we’re in the woods. My gutters and windows are white. What do you think? Thank you!
Some companies have a color called Thunderstorm Gray. That would look good or CertainTeed's Heather Blend.
My house is painted off white and my shuttered are. Dark mohagany what color roof do you suggest.
My house is SW9130 - Evergreen Fog which has an LRV of 31.15 (on the dark side); white trim-Alabaster; and shutters in Urban Bronze
Choices: Owens Corning in Driftwood or GAF in Weathered Wood?
I'm not a fan of either of those brands.
I have a medium greenish/teal colonial house, 12pitch. I like CertainTeed Landmark Moire Black, Charcoal Black, or Pewter.
Recommend?
Is black a problem with getting too hot in New England summers?
I doubt it.
I have natural cedar siding with charcoal and grey fireplace and grey stucco trim on the house and garage. I am replacing cedar shacks and need advice on asphalt shingles color. The greys seem to lean toward blue or green. Please help!
Red brick English tudor house with painted beige cedar shakes
We've got a Cape, brown brick with white siding on the roof sides and dormers. We have colonial red door and shutters. I am thinking maybe black after seeing the pic on the top of one of those Certainteed sample boards you held up, with similar colors as our Cape Cod. Suggestions? Thanks!
That sounds like it would look really nice!
What about white siding with olive green trim?
Consider Heather Blend or Driftwood?
What about a Navy Blue or Teal color house with white trim?
CertainTeed Heather Blend would look really good I think.
