@@DC-zi6se You see that's a problem, It's too ambiguous and it risks anyone just branding anything talent and potentially dismissing all that has gone towards that level of excellence. You see someone that good and say they're talented, but do you actually know how they became that good? or do you think they're talented because they are that good? It is interesting because despite how good Ronaldo is, people always seem to go he's mainly hardwork, has less talent and all that.
Another thing, as far as studies towards proving talent actually exist, at this point, the only thing towards talent that is mentioned are phenotypic traits, your height, your type of muscle, and all that, and people would agree that Ronaldo is more blessed in those aspects, shouldn't he then be more talented?
Personally, I don't believe too much in talent one way or the other, I think everyone works towards how they become, and things like early childhood development, environment, training, and the general kind of life you've led play a great part in how you develop. Which is why I can never understand when people say, that is natural ability. What is natural ability, and what is not natural ability?

The 2 main differences are in Maradona's era it was brutal, the defenders were violent and dirty, the pitches weren't as good but in his era there weren't as many good teams - lots of average teams and players, and think about it, some players didn't train as much and there was a drinking culture rampant too, so the defenders weren't very athletic. In Messi's era every player is a top athlete, every team at world level has everything nailed down, super nutrition, training, coached well. I'd say it's much harder to stand out as great in this era - so Messi edges it. Messi would've dominated in any era but Maradona couldn't do what he did in the 80s against today's defenders and teams.
Then you come to their respective stats of goals, assists and trophies and there isn't even a contest there....

Maradona did it an era when there were lots of great number 10's/forwards - Zico, Socrates, Romario, Careca, Caniggia, Batistuta, Platini, Van Basten, Gullit, Matthaus, Klinsmann, Rummenigge, Baggio, Rossi, Vialli, Savicevic, Hagi, Stoitchkov, Francescoli, Sosa, Aguilera, Hugo Sanchez etc. and he stood out above everyone else.
The best forwards of the past 15 years have been Messi, CR7, Neymar, Suarez, Lewandowski, Muller, Benzema, Zlatan, Mbappe and Haaland - I just don't think the quality is the same now but the forwards are more prolific as the rules have changes massively in favour of the attackers, ironically due to the abuse players like Van Basten, Baggio and Maradona endured from defenders during their careers.
If we look at defenders too - Mardaona faced the likes of Scirea, Gentile, Cabrini, Tardelli, Baresi, Maldini, Tassotti, Galli, Costacurta, Bergomi, Ferri, Vierchowod etc every week in Serie A. Messi's biggest challenges in Spain were when he faced Pepe and Ramos at Real Madrid or Godin and Gimenez at Atletico. Again the quality of defenders just isn't there today and they aren't really allowed to be physical and get takles in or tackle from behind like they did back in the 80s and early 90s. The Butcher of Bilbao broke Maradona's ankle with a brutal tackle and never received a yellow card! Claudio Gentile fouled Maradona 23 times in the 1982 world cup match between Italy & Argentina and never received a yellow. Gentile admitted that with todays rules he would have been sent off inside the first 20 minutes of that 1982 World Cup match.
Finally, each team could only field a maximum of 3 foreign players. Hence the Spanish and the Italian teams would try and sign the absolute best ones available, but there were several to go round. This resulted in lots of fairly well matched teams. Bilbao and Sociedad were able to win the league in Spain in the 80's. In Italy there were 7 different Serie A winners between 1983 and 1991 when Maradona played there. Napoli and Juventus were the only teams able to win Serie A twice during that period. Now the top sides hoover up the best players resulting in scenarios where you have one-team leagues in France and Germany, two-team league in Spain with the odd exceptional season for Atletico, Juve winning 9 Serie A titles in a row from 2012 to 2020 and Man City or Liverpool rarely losing or even drawing a game in the EPL. 80 points could be enough to win the EPl back in the 90's whereas now you need 96-97 points at least. Only 3-5 teams can realistically win the UCL whereas back in the 80's and early 90s teams like Steaua, Red Star Belgrade, Porto or PSV could win it as they were able to keep hold of their best players until they were 25 to 27 years old.
Messi has had the luxury of playing in the best Barca ever with the best players of that era in a 2-team league (Zlatan, Etoo, Henry, Villa, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Pique, Dani Alves). He then joined a team operating in a one-team league with some of this eras best players in Neymar, Mbappe, Marquinhos and Verrati. He hasn't done what Maradona did in taking Napoli, a team which avoided relegation the season before he arrived, to Serie A titles, Coppa Italia and Uefa Cups.

For others, they should stop being nostalgic merchants. :) Just one thing, Messi scored from outside the box more goals than Maradona at Napoli, and that sums the big difference between them and that's not even the strongest point. As I said, Messi is a couple of levels beyond Maradona.

Messi won the Copa America. Maradona never did. Messi won 4 champions Leagues which compares with 1 uefa cup for Maradona. Messi won 11 league titles in Europe compared to 2 for Maradona. @@wonjubhoy I would not call the current Argentinian squad a bad squad. Maradona played with worse players in 86. It was basically Maradona vs the other teams and somehow the got them to two World Cup finals. Maradona was at his best when he played with mediocre players because he lifted everyone around him. The inspiration he gave is not reflectIed in the statistics. I cannot imagine Messi or Ronaldo openly seeking out a bottom dweller team like Napoli that was looked down on by everyone and lifting the team up and the city to the top.
Maradona was in a league of his own. He was not a two dimensional card board cutout. He talked the talk and walked the walk. He was a true superstar back in the days where there was no social media. He was followed and hounded by the media like Princess Diana or Michael Jackson.

The same people like you who watch highlight reels of emerging talent and call them great before they’ve learnt to kick it as professionals.
If Maradona played with todays rules and protection as well as modern day pitches and balls he’d double any stats Messi finishes with at the end of his career.
Maradona’s footballing ability was from another planet. How is this even a debate? One guy won the WC single handedly and single handedly took his country to another final 4 years later. On both occasions he had average players around him.
Messi on the other hand has played in 4 previous WC tournaments and hasn’t done jack until now and hasn’t scored more than one goal from open play yet. Even if he wins this one he won’t come close to Maradona’s achievements. This little man is one of the greats no doubt but he’s played most of his career with other greats such as Xavi, Iniesta, Ronaldiniho, Neymar, Suarez, Villa, Mbappe etc. In this current Argentinian squad he’s got the likes of Di Maria, Martinez, Alvarez, Lisandro etc i bet you can’t name any players that played alongside Maradona other than C.Cannigga and Bouruchaga! @wonjubhoy well maradona didn't play as many games for Argentina or career wise as messi, obviously messi is going to have more goals since he has more than double the games played for club and country. Not to mention messi played in a stacked team in a 2 team league for most of his career. I'm not trying to discredit messi but the fact a played like cristiano who is great in his own right but nowhere near as talented or as good of a player as maradona or r9 can match his numbers and accolades do you really think maradona or r9 wouldn't be putting up the same or more numbers?.

    • @wonjubhoy

@@joserivera5007 no Maradona would not. Maradona's best year with Argentina saw him with 7 goals. Messi's best year with Argentina was in 2022 with 18 goals. Maradona's best season with Barcelona was his first in which he scored 23 goals in 35 games. Messi's best season was when he scored 73 goals in 60 games. If you look at goals for Argentina Maradona scored 34 goals in 91 games. Messi to date has scored 103 goals in 175 games. It is true Messi played more often but that shows he was capable of sustaining world class performances for far longer than Maradona. Messi has a vastly superior goals to games ratio compared to Maradona. Your own comments infer that Spain is a 2 team league. That makes Maradona's failure to win la Liga for Barcelona look far worse then. During the early 1980s Real Sociedad could win la Liga but not Barcelona when Maradona was there. After Maradona left Barcelona won their 1st league title for 11 years and reached the European cup final the season after. That tells you how little he was missed. One other thing Messi scored 2 goals in a world cup final. Maradona never scored in a world cup final. Messi is vastly superior to Maradona.

I get this Messi thing, he has been around for a long time, great skills/goals, won lots of silverware, but Maradona created his own football language, inventing skills and techniques never seen before, Messi is using the language created by Diego and perhaps enhanced it a little. If you were handed an I phone in 1980 your mind would have exploded, if you are given an i phone 5 in 2011, you would think, yea a little bit better than the original, bit more reliable, but just wouldn't have the same impact of being decades ahead of your time like Maradona.

We all just fans with our favorites that’s the truth. But when we ask professionals and ex players and coaches past and present 7 or 8 out of 10 say Messi. It’s not that hard. Maybe a little painful especially if your fav player was Maradona and you witnessed that extraordinary flamboyant character live; but messi didn’t need a “hand of god” or performance enhancing drugs or medicines to drop weight quickly. Plus people talking about cocaine forgot that it also gives you a boost from what I’ve seen on tv 😂…. I mean when Rick James or scare face took that trash they Turned up! What makes you think Maradona didn’t hit some lines 15 minutes before a match???? 😂 And finally the longevity of Messi’s career! We used to talk about Ronaldo vs messi. Now mbappe vs messi, wow!!! And the defenders now a days are way more faster, smarter and technically sound! So maybe the pitch and nutrition is better now but so are the players. And idk Maradona was a little over weight conditioning would of been an issue. The party’s today are crazier man And with his bad discipline lol 😂😅 I love Maradona, Ada player, but I don’t think there’s a comparison anymore 🤷🏽‍♂️
