  • A simple off grid homestead. Built from the ground up with your own hands. Thats the dream for thousands of people around the world. But, with cable TV programs and made up youtube videos, what does that look like in reality. In this video , my wife Brooke and I show the process of building an off grid homestead , start to finish, and what its actually like. Thanks for watching.
Portions of this video were provided by my wife's footage that you can see on her channel ( Girl in the Woods)....here's a link to her channel.

Lots of good information and ideas. We are just figuring out where to put what buildings for the homestead we are setting up. This book czcams.com/users/postUgkxT9ExVpR-3A-9rpRqx8vzXKZ3BMMTg_KH is super helpful in determining what types of buildings we need, where to place them and how to build them.

One of the things I love so much about your and Brookes videos is that, even though I recognize that you both have years of experience doing this type of work, I always leave feeling like it's possible even for someone like me, who didn't own a power drill until her late 30s and who has never even built a birdhouse.
In fact, I think I'm gonna go ahead and start that birdhouse this weekend. ❤️ Gotta start somewhere.

Built a birdhouse in highschool carpentry class, the paint job is ugly plain brown but it works & sits on my parents property to this day, doing its job for the birds. I guess the brown kinda works too bc it blends in with the woods behind it
That & the cutting board I made in that class, actually looks pretty beautiful considering it was made by an amateur (dad knows & has a lot of tools & taught me stuff all as I grew up anytime he had a project & also had a great carpentry teacher) to this day parents still have that cutting board (never used) as a display piece in the kitchen. It’d work fine as a cutting board, they just don’t want knife marks in it & I appreciate that they want to keep something I handmade & gave them like that

Been a carpenter over 40 years. There's the way you have to build things in cities with inspector's, building codes, big box stores just around the corner and all that; then there's the way to build things out away from amenities like power sources, running water and so forth, using what's available... including common sense. Yours is a great example of the latter; a very fine example of ingenuity, hard work and determination. I salute you both.
By the way, you get extra credit for being a decent human being that won't resort to showing pictures of scantily clad women just to draw cyber pervs to their site.

I build the storage sheds, the deer, cattle, sheep and goat yards and build a cottage. People asked me where did I learn how to do all this. The answer is, 20 years in the army, ability to follow written instruction, good public library and ability to ask neighbours questions on “ how and why and when”. In our part of the southern world we call it “the number 8 mentality”, there is nothing that can’t be fixed with a No. 8 wire. Learn something from your mistakes and plan ahead. Easy as! Just put in cool place, root cellar underground or anywhere like that, just a dark spot in bottom of a cabinet an they'll stay fine. I wish I could live that way again. My health went downhill so bad I miss cutting and splitting fire wood an building with my hands. I've always wanted to visit Alaska, I'm not giving up on that one. Because one day hopefully I'll make it up there, find myself a good honest woman and build her, that dream home she's always wanted. With my know how, everything is possible. God bless you all and enjoy the slower safer country life, there's nothing better.

We too live in the mountains 5 miles from town (25 miles from the city) and Costco is a 45 minute drive on summer roads. It can be twice that in the winter.
We had to fall 17 trees to make enough room for our house, septic tanks and drain field, plus enough of a fire break. We chose to put Hardi-Board (concrete) ship lap for our siding as we have a fire season here every year. Our mountain hasn’t burned in 32 years, so we installed galvanized pipes with rain bird sprinklers on the peak of our roof. If there’s a fire we’ll quickly attach the sprinkler system to our frost free spicket and turn it on to water all around our house and out building’s.
We’ve built several retaining walls and raised garden beds to make our veggie garden and my wife’s flower garden as flat as possible.
We have one area of our property that is flat so that’s where we planted dwarf Rainer Cherry, Honey Crisp Apple and a “Donut” peach tree’s. So far we have 7 fruit trees planted. Next year we’ll plant a Mulberry tree and 2 Elderberry trees on another section of our property.
We grow almost all of our fruits and veggies. Whatever we can’t eat right away we freeze dry.
My wife’s family live in Montana and own a 17K acre ranch. Their growing season is short, so we barter some of our freeze dried fruits and veggies for a pig, cut and wrapped.
Every spring we buy a young steer that’s raised on her family’s ranch. In late fall the steer that we bought is slaughtered. We get 1/2 of the steer and they take the other 1/2. So our initial cost is only for the cost of the young steer. So that’s how we get our meat for the year.
I can’t see well enough anymore to go hunting for tasty Elk or deer, so we settle for a pig and 1/2 a beef.
I salute everyone who has the courage to homestead and I can appreciate all of the work that goes into an off grid homestead.

Now you're free to either discover it, or if you already have, walk through it. If nothing else, having completely free, unburdened time to think, evaluate and simply enjoy what you enjoy is the most valuable gift you could ever have. As you know, you can never get your time back, and this free time won't last, so do try and enjoy it as much as you can. Your next, new job is waiting for you already. Cheers😎👊

@Trantor The Troll There was a time before the internet when people had fun anyways... ^)^ But in any case, they clearly have access to internet since the videos keep coming. Or they drive to town to load them up. And for electricity they have solar and mobile batteries that stores power, for LED lights, a radio, computer, phone etc. Or a diesel-driven generator when you need it.
If it is pollen you have problem with then living of grid in the spring would be hard, but you still have the late summer, autumn and winter without pollen. And there exists filters for homes that can help clear the air. There is even cheap "nose-filters" that clears 99% of pollen in the air. Otherwise, if it is not pollen, then the air of the woods should be good for you.
I think they work from time to time in seasonal work(i´ve heard them mention it). But both have a income from YT now also, so i guess their workload outside YT has gone down.

I cherish those winter days when after a hard days work, or a hard day of play, when it's getting dark and the wind is howling, a snowstorm on the way, there is just nothing better than getting to your cabin, lighting a fire, and kicking back.
