I think the appeal of How The Grinch Stole Christmas is really a) how hard Jim Carrey goes and b) how kind of nihilistic/anti-consumerism the messaging is, while still being classic/digestible enough to throw on with your family.
One of my favorite Christmas movies is "Nightmare Before Christmas". The animated movie. It's great family fun.
I think you're thinking of What Lies Beneath, with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfifer. Such a great thriller!
The Holdovers was an extremely pleasant surprise! Went in not expecting much and came out absolutely loving it.
Same!!! I thought it would be an ok Christmas movie it blew me away
Absolutely will be on Christmas rotation!
Hi Emma- I lost my dear girl last June and I am still struggling so I know and empathize with what you are feeling . Wishing you all the best and a very happy new year 🖤🎊🎉
What are you talking about
What is she feeling
May December was easily a top film of the year for me. Incredible acting by all 3 leads. The repetitive music was the only drawback.
I loved the music
Amazing movie that begged discussion after watching it!
Thanks Emma for your constant great content 😊 hope you have a great new year's 🎉🎉🎉
Gues you confused "What Lies Below" with "What Lies Beneath" starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer :).
Now I feel like I need a "What Lies Beneath" rewatch to investigate if that's actually good. There's some ghost stuff in it, I believe, and I remember it from when I was like 11.
@@nancyboucher4014 I absolutely LOVED the movie when I was 11 as well, creeped me out so much. However, I rewatched it about a year ago or so ... shouldn't have done that xD.
@RicardaSch: I had the same thought; IMDB says there exists a 2016 documentary titled 'What Lies Below'. Another comment says the movie you named might have ghostly content, which is intriguing.
Awesome 🥳 best of greetings and get safe into the new year !
What Lies Beneath is the movie you are probably referring too in the video.
Always so happy to see one of your videos pop up! Hope you have a very happy next year 🍀🎉❤
I watched Black Christmas for the first time in years at an Astor screening about a week ago. Not only more effective on the big screen, but it was fun to overhear the reactions of those who hadn't seen it in the crowd, especially with the final twist.
RIP Gromit
Great list as per usual Emma, can't wait to watch a few of your recommendations!!. Thinking of you, hope you have a really good new year, ❤❤❤.
Thank you
I hope things get better for you Emma. I appreciate how entertaining and informative your videos are. They are a great source for me decide what to watch. Thank you for all that you do!
Thank you so much
So many good films you mentioned, Emma, but I thought I would just focus on one thing. I do recommend the original cartoon of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" for two specific reasons. The first is just to hear the Boris Karloff narration and the Thurl Ravencroft singing. The second is to notice the similarities to and inspirations for "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Tim Burton did a marvelous job of rethinking and expanding the Dr. Seuss classic.
Oh heck yeah I'm always excited to watch your What I Watched vids!! Can't wait for the day you react to Blackbird!! One day! LOL
I love Apostle but your review is actually the reason I subscribed to you!! I just thought your review was entertaining and well informed. So even tho I love this movie I love how a negative review is how I found you!!
I actually love your reviews! Ever since I saw you recommend Unwelcome in another video (which is funny considering you didn't "recommend it" in this one) but I loved it! Def a WTF movie and not for everybody but I love a good horror! Now, I literally come back all the time for your recommendations because I just know if spooky likes it must be a banger! Anyways, just wanted to say thanks!
Perhaps when you talk about What Lies Below, you’re thinking of What Lies Beneath which is a thriller from the period you mentioned and a really great movie! I watched the Actors on Actors interview with Da’Vine Joy Randolph and even though she’s there to talk about The Holdovers she does spill the tea on The Idol and a bit about what happened there…
Well, I started Unwelcome and The Visitor, and sort of gave up on both, and was wondering if I should give them another try. Based on your impression, I don't think I will.
Thanks for everything you put into 2023, and have a great new year!
Thank you, Emma ❤
Great video Emma.
Just wondering, how do you play the “Netflix roulette” that you mentioned? I’m interested in trying something like this when I can’t decide what to watch lol.
If you google netflix roulette it will bring up a site you can run your roulette from.
There’s several websites which do it :)
Is Apostle the one with a trepanation scene?
Yep
I took an edible before watching Unwelcome and ended up giving it 3.5 stars! 😂 Maybe I need to do a rewatch? LOL
Haha
20:28 im so glad that you really enjoyed Raging Grace Emma!
Very brave watching all The Idol. Up there with most disturbing watch of the year?
I'm so excited to watch Dream Scenario 😍 it sounds like my kind of film
We saw May December on Christmas, such an amazing creepy film. Could have done without the transitional music though!
i love that you upload multiple times a week 😭😭😭
the photoshop on the legion poster is killing me lol
Definitely putting The Holdovers at the top of my watch list. Thanks for introducing us to Treevenge. I couldn't stop laughing lol....
Glad you enjoyed it!
A couple there I need to add to my list, cheers.
You ever see Snowtown (2011), very, very disturbing but really well made, would only watch it the once tho lol
Daniel Henshall is also in the 2023 drama/thriller The Royal hotel... and he also plays an ABSOLUTE bastard in it.
cool, I'll have to see that @@sepiarain
18:39 how dare legion and its sequels are great
I loved what lies below
The movie from the 2000s you were thinking of was what lies beneath with harrison ford
Great review 😊
what lies beneath with harrison ford, one of fav thrillers
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 happy new year!
Well…soon lol
Omg, I rewatched Black Christmas again a couple of days ago and had the same response as you: it gets better every time I see it. Imo, it is flat-out one of the best horror films ever made in terms of building tension, intelligent script, and cinematography. And yes, it's *very* political.
inside number 9 'the devil of christmas'
Have you ever heard the theory that jack skelington is the Grinch in his afterlife?
I love love loooooove dream scenario. I would have never watched it if it wasn’t for you
As alwas thanks for this. I actually loved unwelcome especially the abrupt tonal shift in the movie and i think it would make a great double feature with theres something in the barn. I understand your criticism though.
Watched Black Christmas on Christmas Day along with Anna and the Apocalypse, both extremely strong films. But I have to say, I strongly disagree with the statement in reference to Black Christmas "nobody will help the women", when the entire A plot of the film revolves around people helping the women. For example, when the first girl is flagged as missing, the entire town mobilises into a search party, they have an officer/tech guy stationed at the telephone company dedicated to tracing the call, there's an officer stationed outside the house at all times, they have a dedicated detective on the case who waits by his phone, the father is out looking for his daughter, and avoiding spoilers, Olivia Hussey's boyfriend comes to help her, even though they are in a massive fight and I think he knows that she does not love him and that they are about to break up and so on.
Either way, I suppose the main point is what a strong film it is because imo, it gets the fundamentals right and actually it made me sad for the state of films today that just struggle with basics like character.
Totally agree with you about the original version of Black Christmas. There is that one incompetent cop who's really dismissive of the women's concerns, but other then that everyone else is doing the best they can to help them figure out what's going on, but unfortunately they're just unable to catch on in time to what's actually happening until it's too late. It's tragic, & one of the most genuinely frightening movies i've ever seen.
Yeah, that's right, I forgot about him. That, him, that is such a great piece of writing too because they set up earlier on that he is, less than intelligent we'll, and ultimately that leads to one of the tragedies of the ending, and because he is stupid he can't follow instructions. Such a good film, all the characters engaging, I genuinely liked these people, the antagonist is genuinely terrifying. So good.@@kirstyfairly4371
Spoilers.
My point is no one believes them, and even the cop who thinks it’s the boyfriend and says it is…. Doesn’t do anything about it until he’s dead and then we find out the guy is still in the house… they never check the attic and they just leave her there to sleep in the end. Throughout the movie the calls aren’t taken seriously also. It was a blanket statement when talking about the movie because part of the plot is how frustrating it is to see them be picked off when the danger is in the house.
Sometimes I get too wrapped up in the literalness of plots or examples. Like, the film is definitely saying something, the point of it or what it's saying is close to the point you're making. But the plot is that nobody knows what's happening, even the sorority girls don't realise the first girl is missing, it's the father that notices it and raises it with the police. They're, and it can be said reasonably, dismissive because she has a reason to missing, the issue is pressed, they form the search party, find some bodies, then after that they mention the prank phonecalls I think.
Anyway, the important point is is that the film is so good that people could talk about it and tease out meanings. Because it's got something going on. Pretty sure I only watched it this year because I saw it in one of your videos, so thanks
I think you’re thinking of “What Lies Beneath.” 😊
Also, I’m pretty sure “May December” is based on the Mary Kay Letourneau story. Which was huge in the US when it happened decades ago.
If you look into Jordan peeles “the twilight zone” it is actually really good. He incorporates aliens into it in so many different ways.
Apparently the Idol was edited to feature more of The Weeknd, but was originally focused on Lily Rose Depp’s character, thus changing the story and vibe.
Honestly the storyline is problematic no matter how you spin it
don't forget Black Christmas in 2002 or 3? Billy has a friend!
Emma ! it's a Wonderful, it's the american classic , must watch in december!
Are you thinking of What Lies Beneath with Michelle Pfeiffer?
I felt like May December was a strange time to release a film about that type of subject matter while that subject matter is being highly exposed. I didnt finish it bc it came off, to me, as glorifying the situation and then to put big name actors was to...what, bring more eyes to the subject like hey, look how this isnt so bad.
Here's what I saw in December 2023
Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch (Extended cut)
P2
The Pebble and the penguin
Die Hard
Silent Night Deadly Night
Santa's Slay
Tokyo Godfathers
Black Christmas (74)
Dumb Hounded (Animated short)
Red Hot Riding Hood (Animated short)
When a Stranger Calls (79)
I will be watching Terror Train (1980) on New year's eve. I watched Black Christmas 74 twice I saw it on Christmas Eve then my cousins came over on Christmas day. She wanted to watch a older horror movie so I put the original again. She Fell asleep after the Housemother got killed.
please tell me the full body chills moment in May December is when Julianne Moore lisps her little "truth" in the mirror at the restaurant??
No it’s there last conversation together!
You might be thinking about What Lies Beneath (instead of what lies below) c 1999. A thriller I really enjoyed actually. Thanks for the recommendations
21:14... Vestibule!
I tried nord, surf shark, and 1 other bc I love British horror & wanted to be able to use BBC iplayer but no dice 🤷🏻♀️
Works for me! Email the customer service if you have issues they can usually fix it
I actually really liked What lies below
How dare you not know who Jeremy Jordan is. Lol. Just kidding. No, but really.... he IS a gem.
Also, it's funny because I loved Unwelcone and HATED May December. That movie just didn't do it for me. Netflix is abusing the score in new releases this year (Leave the World Behind was worse ). Drove me to distraction.
Thank you for watching Movies and TV for us. Your video is beautiful and helps me verry much to see the right films and more!!! 👺👹👻
Emma really is the gift that just keeps on giving.
You might be thinking of "What lies beneath"
THE IDOL SUPREMACY
You were thinking about What Lies Beneath I think, which had Harroson Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. Yes very different!
The problem I had with Apostle was like you said. Too much dragging things out near the end. The main villain there was explaining way too much, and it was all pretty cliche. If they cut a lot of that out it would have been a better movie..
"The Blackcoat's Daughter" or "February" is much better than "The Sacrifice Game".
I don’t think of them as similar at all, totally different vibes
@@spookyastronauts True. But that was the movie with the same premise you were talking about, right? Also, both movies have one more thing in common at the end...
No I did mention the movie I was talking about in this video when I got to it, it was the holdovers
Hey 👋 Emma Happy New Year 🎆🎊🎈 early 🥳👼🏻💜💘❤️🎄🪩🥂🌹☃️❄️
I was disturbed by the idol in such a way i hope it does not get a season 2. I just saw on Google it has been canselled, such a shame 😂
what lies beneath
Maybe you’re thinking what lies beneath?
Question: surf shop... Do they make you pay monthly or one time fee? I only see 1 time fee 😢
December is not over
Poor Things was amazing. One of the best films I have ever seen.
You mean what lies beneath maybe?
In watched the 1st episode of The Idol.
I thought your other movie about two people getting left at boarding school after everyone leaves would be The Blackcoat’s Daughter lmao. God I hated that movie.
It's called what lies beneath
the holdovers was such a clishe...
Is it ostentatious to say you look like an Australian version of Millicent from Spoonful of Sugar. I can't get it it out of my head.
I haaate My Best Friend's Wedding. Jules is a horrible person!
John 3:16 NKJV Bible
Apostle gave me gas. I thought I was the only one that did not care for it
Pleasant wishes to you✨
