    Couldn't agree more on Mean Girls. I loved the Broadway show and was so looking forward to an adaptation, and they cut so many of the songs (which creates some major story transition issues), while also taking out a chunk of good stuff from the original movie, and the result feels designed to appeal to absolutely no one.

    in my documentary class last year we had a whooole debate over whether or not it was entirely ethical of Herzog to create a documentary about Timothy Treadwell at all, considering some of the things that are brought to light about him and the way he is portrayed in the film. it was a lot of fun and made me consider the art of documentary altogether in a totally new way; so while Grizzly Man is by no means the best doc out there, it sure has stuck with me! i think it's a must-watch for those just getting into the form beyond the generic Hollywood true crime doc. ⭐

    I loved Gen V, some outrageous scenes and not just gore!
    Best film I saw this month (twice at the cinema) was Poor Things, so funny, outrageous and inspiring. Not horror, but kinda a reworking of the Frankenstein story, so good. I also saw Baghead at the cinema, which I enjoyed more than some people. It's nothing amazing, but I still liked it.

    I went to a screening of Monolith in October last year as part of a short MIFF encore series held at ACMI in Melbourne. The writer director was there and said that a short local cinema release was soon to happen before it went to streaming. It played at the Nova here (and I think one other cinema) for about a month. At the moment it's rent or buy from Apple and Prime. Hopefully, it might then move to SBS or Stan. Appreciate the mention, wouldn't like to see it sink without distribution of some kind as it's really worth the attention of horror/sci fans.

    So many great recommendations I would not have caught without your monthly wrap up, especially the docs! You confirmed some things I wanted to see and made me consider some other ones more closely. These videos you do each month are the best content digest on YT. When it comes to Hell or High Water I like it because to me it was a modern Western that painted an accurate psychological portrait of America at that time. In the aftermath of the financial mortgage crisis and the Iraq/Afghanistan war, many Americans felt betrayed by the big banks and let down by government. The irony of the racist Texas ranger and his parter was that America was settled with violence and the taking of native property that created the American dream but now it is the modern institutions they created that have ripped that dream apart for so many. I also really like the cinematography and I am fine with the ending but I don't think its great. 😊

    Love your thoughts! Hell or High Water is one of my favorite movies so I am going to gently push back on some criticism. I will say it is a deeply *Texan* film so if you have familiarity with Texas, American oil rigs, resentment towards banks, I think that helps. It's also deeply steeped in American gun culture/vigilantism. It's really telling but subtle the scene where all the Texans are like "we got guns we can be vigilantes" but in the face of an actual crime scene have to high tail. in terms of the racist commentaries, I think it does make a statement/come full circle. It's about that type of character - who has racist attitudes even though the person closest to him in the whole world is from that identity. It's about how racism is a learned behavior; you can see in their last interaction how deeply, deeply attached to his partner Jeff Bridges's character is. It's 100% a movie about a time and a place, and I think what I love about it is how nuanced it is in terms of how it captures the American economy, the exploitation of the working class by the banks, the casual racism of the poverty stricken landscape, the obsession with guns and masculinity...it's subtle enough that people who just want a shoot-em-up tale can enjoy it, but nuanced enough like a Flannery O'Connor novel that every scene is a scathing-yet-understated critique of how corporate interests have poisoned Southern American society. I say all this because while I'm sure there are some similarities in New Zealand for how corporations exploit the working class, there is something so American about this film, so I think it's totally reasonable that if you weren't surrounded by that culture growing up, some of it might not hit as hard!

      @spookyastronauts  Před 4 měsíci

      I’m in Australia! But I do understand the film, there were no issues with that, the economic state is very well explained several times in the film. I’ve also learnt a lot about it through different films and texts throughout the years, we learn a lot about America and other countries even though you may not know much about us.Australia also has a lot of history with learned racism. I do understand it, I just didn’t love it. I know a lot of people love it and that’s okay, it’s good that I don’t let others love for it sway my own opinions.. it’s just something that happens sometimes when you have different tastes.

    Thanks for the monthly re-cap, Emma. I am looking forward to seeing "Monolith" this month and I agree that "Hell Or High Water" has been kind of overrated. I feel like Plan B and Unpregnant came out around the same time, and have nearly identical set up, basically the Armageddon/Deep Impact of unwanted teen pregnancy films. Maybe I got that example backwards, I'm not sure. It's very late here. Brain not good. Either way, I found Unpregnant to be a very charming, sweet, and solidly good film.
    There's a lot of people saying that we are not getting any comedies anymore, and that may be true of tentpole comedies of which we'd get at least one a year for a time. But what we are getting is a lot of female led two handers that are extremely good, always have bags of charm like Unpregnant mentioned above but also things like for example Bottoms and Booksmart. Anywho, I probably shouldn't post this because of how shit my brain is rn and I don't know how good the sentences are....but

    I think a possible reason you were not as wow'd by Hell Or High Water is cultural. It's a very American (and even moreso, a Texas) film. It does a great job of capturing a very specific type of economic struggle that many rural Americans face. Chris Pine's character embodies that struggle and you completely understand his motivation for the criminal activity. Jeff Bridge's character is not just a cop, but a Texas Ranger. The Texas Rangers have a legendary pedigree for getting their man. While he's definitely racist, he's a Ranger first and his racist remarks around his partner is his way of ball busting. Then, when his partner is killed, any racist feelings he has towards him are immaterial because he was a fellow lawman first. At the end of the film, you understand exactly where each of the main character's stand. And you understand that Chris Pine's character is willing to pay the price for the crimes he was part of, but he won't do so without a fight, because he feels justified in doing what he had to do for his estranged wife, children, and the family land.

      My issue with the hell or High waters was that it didn’t have any purpose in the fictional story for me, if I watch fictional movies about stalking or killers theres usually a reason within the plot that they are part of the story.
      When people are honest about their taste and thoughts that should be encouraged not condemned, otherwise people stop sharing any thoughts that go against the grain.

    I think a man being obsessed with bears to the point that he lives with them in the wilderness only to then be brutally mauled to death by them is pretty disturbing 😅

      It’s definitely sad but I was surprised he lived with them for so long before that happened. It didn’t shock me at all
