  • I've talked about how the Switch OLED compares to the original Nintendo Switch, but what's a much more interesting comparison to me is the Switch Lite. Which one makes for the best handheld experience?

I _would've_ preferred the Lite all around as someone who grew up with the Game Boy through 3DS and became accustomed to small ergonomic portable devices. My problem with the Lite is that the games weren't designed to be viewed on a screen that small. A lot of the UI and general visuals appear super-tiny. Every prior Nintendo handheld ironically didn't have this problem because they had lower resolutions and therefore larger, easier-to-see pixels. However, high-res screens don't have to be hard to see, as phones prove. I hope Nintendo and developers in general improve in this regard come the next console.

yeah I noticed! I have the 3ds and some games like pokemon did have some issues with the UI in the touch screen. I was always wondering about purchasing a 3ds xl. Currently I have been in the market for a switch and I realized that although the lite version is much more affordable, the interface could present itself as a problem. I found an open box OLED with the same price as the red box brand new switch which I just purchased a couple of days ago. hopefully it does not disappoint.

I’ve had the Lite and the OG Switch. The Lite is by far the best design of all the models, it looks cool and better and feels better in the hands. The interface is fine. But, games do sometimes show they are designed for a bigger screen, even the OG bigger screens makes a huge difference. Luigi’s Mansion on the Lite ru s find but it zooms out to give a wider angle and everything becomes too small. And as you can’t dock the Lite at all it can be a problem.

I had the Switch Lite (I LOVED this light blue color) and switched back to the regular because I really wanted to be able to play on TV again. But really, if the Switch Lite offered this functionality, I definitely would've kept it (even if it were $50 more expensive) because the unibody build is just so much nicer to use. And because it was smaller, I felt some sort of nostalgia since it was almost like the old Gameboy Advance which I loved.

You can have it "fixed" or replaced as many times as Nintendo will, wheather it be the removable Joycons on the regular Switch and OLED or the Soldered-ones on the Swith Lite, but you have the option to just get new controllers such as Hori SplitPad Pro or Binbok on the OLED and Regular instead of suffering with the drift and "repair" waits (provided you are going through Nintendo).

Having used a Switch Lite for about a year when my Switch died, I can say that it is pretty great when played liked lying down on a couch/bed, when travelling or when even commuting to work. It is small, light, all in "one piece", has a proper Dpad, shoulder buttons are petty good and it has a decent battery life. However, it is just a shame that it cannot be docked at all, the screen is a bit tiny for some games (especially the ones with tiny text size) and its got some "yellowish" colors. It was great and all but I couldn't do without the possibility to play docked when I wanted/needed to so I've sold it and bought a new regular Switch. Sure, it came with a cost, both in terms of money and comfort (bigger, heavier) but it was definitely better. With the OLED model coming (pre-ordered it), it isn't a fair fight anymore: much better/bigger screen, better colors, better sound, possibility to play docked or tabletop (this finally becomes a viable option), the OLED wins hands down. I'll only miss the Lite for the (few) times I travel as it is then the best option (smaller, lighter, easier to carry around).

A nice take on this issue that only Kevin would point out. I've had V1 Switch and never docked it so I sold it for the Lite. The points he mentioned are nothing new but still a good reminder with pros and cons for both systems.
The Lite is definitely more comfortable and lighter to play especially when lying down where the phat Switch gets tiring. I also prefer the proper d-pad and buttons on the Lite compared to the clicky, no travel buttons on the original Switch.
Obviously the major pros on the V# Switch is the dock ability that I sometimes miss and the tabletop play. I also miss the hd rumble and it has to be said even the V1 had a better screen than the Lite so it's suddenly got even more so with OLED.
It's always swings and roundabouts with Nintendo revisions though with Switch it's not always so clear cut compared to say the 3ds range when the last new 3ds ones were the best hands down, especially the small new 3ds.
Saying all that I'm a bit on the fence about whether to get the OLED, Nintendo are so infuriating 🤔

Right now, you might just be able to get away with non-hard plastics like SkullnCo’s, as it only relies on the contour of the switch with the joycons attached to fit securely around and behind the console, however keep in mind that any that relies on the overall width of the device might or might not fit properly, leave marks or outright break something if you try to use them. You better off using those wrap-around or shell type of grips/joycon covers for individual joycons or outright use grip-type third party joycon replacements like Hori’s Split Pad Pro until the rest of the market catches up with accessories post release.

Both have their original boxes, chargers & manuals.

I disagree the lite is horrible. If the controllers on them mess up which they will. Its not a question of will it but when it will happen. And the entire thing is ruined and the screen is so small and bad. For handheld oled is best because it has the beat stand and the screen is sooo much better. Once you get your hands on one you cant go back. And it feels better in the hand than the older switch and lite because its a bit thicker. Battery is better overall cleaner now that it can go pure black instead of grey. Overall I recommend saving for another month or 2 for the oled. Only exception is if your buying for your kid. I also feel like some games aren’t really playable on Lite. For example I had a really hard time playing Doom 2016 or Assassin’s Creed III , because everything was so small and hard to make out. But I briefly tried those games on OLED and they actually seem great. I typically tried to skip most of multi platform games, but now that I have OLED, they seem more appealing.

I just kinda figured that I need to own all 3. I have the original switch. It usually stays at home hooked up to the tv and great for just dance and family games. If I do want to take it on the go it is kinda a hassle. Seeing the new led switch, I would love to have it for my pc and and something I feel more comfortable with taking off the stand. Never thought I would be sold on a switch lite. Something to carry in my purse at a more compact size cause the original switch makes me feel like I need to really grip it with my life.

I just upgraded from the Lite to the OLED and the difference is amazing. The screen, omg that screen is gorgeous AF. Having Smash, Mario Kart, and BoTW, among titles, on the big screen is a big win! :) I still have my Lite though tempted to sell it for $150, haven't decided. I really like the construction of the OLED, it feels damn sturdy, the joycons don't have wiggle room like the V1 and V2 have. Overall if you don't have a Switch, the OLED is a very good option if you can find one. I had to go to Craigslist to get mine. Didn't overpay either. :D

I bought the switch lite in the first week it came out about 2 years ago. I really enjoy using it, although I do not use it daily because of the really small screen which hurts my eyes after about an hour. I feel like I'm doing the right thing by upgrading to the OLED model, but if a year from now they release a Pro model I'm going to be super pissed because I feel like I've waited long enough.

Yes! I bought a Switch Lite because I knew that I'd prefer handheld mode. I've had it for a year and a bit now but over time, I got a bit jealous that you could dock a normal Switch. however, I didn't really feel any desire to move to a regular Switch. Then Nintendo announced the OLED and that gave me the final push I needed to upgrade because, not only could you dock, but it also has benefits for handheld play.
My switch lite is going to my sister (12) and I feel like it'll be a great console for her as she's young and has really no need for dock mode at all because she wants to use it primarily for Animal Crossing and Sky: Children of the Light.
I don't get what you said about the D-Pad though. I really think it's the worst part of the Switch Lite. It feels very cheap and honestly reminds me of the D-Pad on the DSi (and the plastic on the DSi snaps very, very easily). That being said, I haven't tried the buttons on the regular joycons so I have nothing to compare it to.

Both the oled and lite cover every gaming situation combined. Oled gives you a 2 player tabletop mode with a strong kickstand. Lite gives you something you can give your kid to play while your on the oled. D pad on lite gives lite a reason to still pick up and play it. Better screen gives oled a fresh look to play your games. Oled is perfect for a switch lite owner who doesn't have a regular switch.
