  • The Nintendo Switch Lite released in 2019, and still stands today as the cheapest Switch available at $200- providing the ultimate portable experience in exchange for the actual "switching". Is it still worth buying in 2024 with the Switch 2 on the horizon?

The Nintendo Switch Lite currently stands as what I would consider the best value Switch available- at least until the Switch 2 finally drops. For $200, it's hard to beat- and I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo keeps it around at that same price tag even after the Switch 2 releases.
But what about you, anyone have the Switch Lite? How do you like it, is it worth it in 2024?

      *Switch* *Lite*
Picked up another turquoise Switch Lite the other night from OfferUp in brand new condition for $130. Loving it again! But this better be my last time. This is the fourth Switch Lite I bought. Broke the previous two turquoises and didn’t like the coral.
I feel like John Wayne in that I Love Lucy episode that had to keep making those footprints on wet cement. I think Switch Lite has become my most *rebought* gadget of all-time. But it’s my absolute favorite form factor of the Switch. Let’s see if fourth time’s the charm. And this is my third turquoise Lite which could be third time’s the turquoise charm.
I’m still mad at myself for messing up the previous Lite I had. I will not make the same mistakes again. I’ll use my SN30 Pro so the left stick will not wear out after 7 months like it did with my first Lite. And I plan to always use the velcro strap when it’s inside the case. No more accidental falls when I forget that the zipper is open and then watch it crashing to the floor resulting in a hairline crack on the screen.
Maybe I’ll get the Switch OLED again but I’m content with only owning the Lite. I just couldn’t tolerate the weight and width of the OLED. And I miss how sharp the graphics looks on the Lite thanks to the smaller screen but higher ppi. I miss the real d-pad too. Only thing to tolerate with my new Lite is the worse battery life. I only had the OLED for 6 days but it definitely had noticeably better battery life.
If I got an OLED again and many do go for $250 or less on OfferUp considering the sellers know the Switch 2 is coming, then I would need to deregister my Lite as the primary console. That gets annoying. I would always need to have an Internet connection for a moment to play my games because it’s no longer the primary. Might as well wait for the Switch 2 instead of getting another OLED.
I think when buying a handheld, I believe comfort is the most important thing to me and then battery life considering I don’t game for hours like before. Probably why I would go for the Retroid Pocket 4 over the Odin 2. True, it’s weaker. Worse battery life. But it’s cheaper by $100 and it’s smaller and more pocketable.
Smaller, lighter, and cheaper are the key factors when purchasing a handheld for me. Size, weight, and hand comfort are all important for me. They’re called handhelds for a reason. You want your hands to feel comfortable when holding it. I don’t want to return to the days carrying bricks like the Game Gear and Atari Lynx. I’ll likely wait for the Switch Lite 2 by 2026.
      North American releases -
      DS: 2004

      Switch Lite: 2019
      Switch 2: 2024?
      Switch 2 Lite: 2026?
Wait every two years. There will probably be a smaller PS Portal too which will include Bluetooth. With bigger consoles, it’s waiting three years (2006->2009, 2013->2016, 2020->2023) although PS5 slim is not that much smaller.
We have these large smartphones already including foldables that weigh over 250g. Now you want to carry another brick for gaming? The PSP 2K and the PS Vita 2K models remain the most comfortable handhelds I’ve ever owned. It’s why I still own them and planning not to sell them.
      Weight -
      PSP: 280g
      PSP slim: *189g*
      PS Vita: 260g
      PS Vita slim: *219g*
      PS Portal: 529g
      Switch: 398g
      Switch Lite: *277g*
      Switch OLED: 420g
      Pimax Portal Retro: 306g
      Odin 2: 420g
      Anbernic RG405M: 260g
      Retroid Pocket 3+: 235g
      Retroid Pocket 4/4 Pro: 251g
      Steam Deck: 669g
      Steam Deck OLED: 640g
So the Odin 2 is as heavy as the Switch OLED with the Joy-Con attached? I did get used to using the OLED but I still got wrist fatigue after 20 minutes. Not exactly the best size and weight while sitting on a toilet 🚽. I think my max weight for any handheld is no heavier than the Switch Lite but no taller and wider than the Vita.
Steam Deck OLED is the best handheld out there but I’m torn if I really want a PC handheld or not. I really couldn’t tolerate the Switch OLED size, now imagine the Steam Deck? Then I’d play Red Dead Redemption at 30 fps on my Lite and start to think how much better the sequel looks on the more powerful Deck. I can barely hear what they’re saying in RDR because the Switch Lite’s speakers are so soft.
Still waiting for that Switch 2 announcement. I still kept the slim case for the OLED and I’m hoping the Switch 2 (or Switch 2 Lite) can someday fit in it and be of similar size but be much lighter and thinner. This likely wins out for me thanks to the many Nintendo exclusives. I wish there was a Chinese handheld that looks like the RG405M but lighter and still have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

@@vinnydarrc3953 the switch lite comes with a screen protector already on it. I found that out after buying screen protector(s) to go on mine and noticed how thick the screen was. 😂🤦‍♀️I said "There's already a screen protector on it." My dad had been watching me struggle to try to put the first two on without collecting hair and dust under the cover (which I failed miserably at). I then noticed that the screen protector provided was crooked (probably my fault from trying to straighten the screen protectors on top of the one that already existed 🤦‍♀️). My dad said "pay attention. Now leave that one alone." So what did I do? Because I'm a perfectionist, I took the screen protector (that it came with) off. It has a pretty sturdy build and it's geared towards a younger audience, who tend to drop their devices more.

  • @Dairunt1

If Switch 2 is around the size of a Switch OLED, I hope they make an updated Switch Lite; hopefully being slightly smaller so it easily fits in your pocket (Lite has a lot of bezel, so making it smaller wouldn't necessarily mean shrinking the screen down). I wouldn't want pocketable handhelds to be extinct.

While I do like smaller handhelds that can be in my pocket, I'd be against that

The issue with the Switch lite is that they did not make it a clam shell design for optimal handheld design. And it helps so much with portability if u could just fold it and toss it into your backpack without worrying about scratching your display.

Yes the Wii U was a very different console and did not sell well. It makes sense, that the Switch does not have backwards compatability with it (where would you even fit the disc haha).
But what about the 3DS ... the Switch is also a successor to the (3)DS line and unlike the Wii U, the 3DS sold well (enough) and also had cartridges. Are the internals very different? Ok ... but the Switch has such a higher power level compared to the 3DS, that it could easily have powered a translation layer or an emulation.
Maybe to much time has passed and there is something / some reason I missed, that my memory has lost to the inevitable fading of time. But this question has come up again and again recently in my mind.
Also ... Sorry, that this comment is not directly related to the video topic.

    Yes.
I've had mine for over two months now and I can safely say that it is worth it for the lower middle class folk like me.
Many say that the Switch isn't the most powerful and yeah, I've also seen some games that are less than stellar on the Switch but the ability, the opportunity for me to play a lot of indie titles I've missed is seriously a godsend. When I got my Switch Lite, I immediately planned on getting a Steam Deck but after realizing that I'm just gonna play a total of 4 games on Steam so I opted out...for now.
Plenty to play and experience at the moment and maybe when the PSP 2 comes out or the next Steam Deck then maybe. Don't wanna ditch the Switch rn.
That's all from me. Thanks for reading 😊

Fantastic little device, perfect for playing older AAA games and very convenient to use. For reasons I’ll never understand, I actually use it more than my PS5 and PC.
There is a big issue though, I bought it specifically for a 9 hour long train trip to visit the family a few months ago, for the majority of that trip, the Switch was essentially unplayable due to how much the sunlight affected the screen. I could barely see a thing, so unless you have a portable blind for public transport, the Lite is far from ideal to travel with on bright days.
PS, The Batman Arkham trilogy is not as bad as what was made out in the video, Asylum and City run perfectly, Arkham Night isn’t perfect, but I didn’t have stuttering in the Batmobile anywhere near that bad in my entire play though. There is lots of noticeable FR drops until you clear out a lot of the bad guys on the street, and the graphics aren’t great, but I found that game more than playable.. 🙂

Switch lite is an insane indie machine and the price is a sticking point for games, but if you keep an eye out on sales and 2nd hand games, you can get around that with a tiny bit of effort. The fact its 7 years old means there are a lot of deals and 2nd hand games, you just need to look around. In terms of value for money nothing comes close besides a Steam deck if its available in your region.

Wgat we do know for sure is that the nintendo switch is available now. Sure, it seems possible we get a successor, but who knows what is certain. I would say you can still get any switch, because of the fantastic library. That being said, I am myself contemplating between a switch oled and lite for mainly handheld play.

You’re in a tough situation haha. If I was in your shoes, I think I would just wait for the switch 2 and hope that it’s backwards compatible with switch games. But the switch 2 is most likely coming with an lcd screen and not an oled. There’s also a switch lite oled custom mod that is being worked on right now. It’s not official, it’s not out yet, and you’d have to take apart a system yourself and change out the screen. (I’m excited for that bc I already own a switch lite). If you have a computer, you could try emulating the games you want to play. I don’t think you need very powerful hardware to do that.

    North American releases -
    DS: 2004
    DS Lite: 2006
    PSP: 2005
    PSP slim: 2007
    PS Vita: 2012
    PS Vita slim: 2014
    Switch: 2017

I have a Steam Deck OLED and a Switch Lite. I prefer my Switch Lite, because with Steam Deck games can look a bit fizzy and text in some games is impossible to read as they are not designed for it. The Switch doesn’t have this problem and to me it feels better made then the Deck. I’ll probably sell my Deck as soon as the second gen Switch is shown off, if not before then. Sorry I think PC games need to be played on a PC, the ones I play anyway.

Drifting does happen over time with heavy use. But should not happen out of the box or only after a few weeks of playing. Whatever happened to Nintendo making hardware that lasts? I've owned all models. Heres my take:
Switch lite: I dont like it. The weight is nice (I prefer lighter consoles), but the quality and inconveniences; such as no dock mode and non removable joycons suck. Especially if you get stick drift. You either have to fix it, sell it or stuff it in your drawer. Most consumers dont want to deal with this hassle.
Regular Switch V1/V2: These are great, the screen is bigger than the lite (another reason i dont like the lite) and the battery lasts longer (V2). Of course if you have an early V1 Switch you can mod it without installing a modchip which is nice.
Switch OLED = Beautiful. Its my favorite model, especially since I can install a modchip into it to unlock it. Its basically a V2 Switch but with a better screen and the dock and plastic on the tablet is better quality. If im spending money, I want my product to feel preimum, the switch OLED promises that.
Take off: All switch models are hackable and I could mod any unit but even with this considered; Switch OLED is King.
