Yep. I agree. I’ve a day one Switch and the battery is poor now. Maybe a 2 hours at an absolute push for battery life. I got a decent price for selling my day 1 Switch (and keeping my most treasured games) and have been without it now for a full week!! I cannot wait for Friday now. Maybe this was just too obvious to mention, but the biggest factor when deciding if the OLED is worth the upgrade is often you play in handheld mode! Because other than the new color dock and ethernet port, this system is 100% geared towards handheld users, and not the people who play the Switch primarily docked.

Same here. I play about 95% handheld because I'm either away from the house or don't want to bother my wife by having the TV on (late in the evening especially). The screen on my original launch day Switch is just looking so small the more I watch these videos about the OLED model. I get used to that thin bezel and then look at the super thick bezel on mine. I mean, most people upgrade their phone every couple of years and spend $500+ on it. I've had my Switch for 4.5 years now. It's just outdated.

The only reason you should worry about burn-in is if both of these apply:
    1) You mainly play one game, particularly a retro game, due to its likely static UI elements
    2) You exclusively play in handheld mode, for hours on end, every single day, for years
There are folks who play their Switch like this, and they should avoid the OLED model, frankly, as there is a good chance they’ll deal with image retention.
Otherwise, anyone else? You’re fine. Seriously. If you play your Switch a couple hours a week and switch back and forth between handheld/TV mode like I do, you will never get close to getting burn-in.

@@vivid8979 I'm gonna be using it at about 50-75% brightness, should I be fine? I am one of the people who only play a few hours a week at most. Only time I put more time than about 8hrs a week is when a new game comes out, like when botw 2 comes out I'll probably be playing all my free time but other wise it's only about 8-10 hrs at most a week, so should I be good? Actually about half that time will be on my TV. Thinking on it I'll play vibrant games or new ones handheld (metroid, botw 2) and for games I've already put so many hours into I'll do tv, like xenoblade chronicles 1 & 2 I'll do tv, or the pokemon games.

They were probably planning more of an upgrade until covid happened and they had to settle for the few upgrades they did make. The Switch Lite came out 2.5 years after the original, then the OLED is coming out 2 years after the Lite. Maybe in another 2 years they'll release a truly upgraded final version.

I must say after upgrading from the launch model, that the upgrade is quite significant. Especially since I mainly play handheld and the extra battery time is sweet and the bigger and way better screen is game changer. The Premium feel and the louder and better sound paired with the built in LAN port is a neat bonus. Finally the extra GBs is always helpful.
Always wondered why people invest huge amounts on great gaming PCs and console, just to buy a cheap and quite sad display! Even though everything you play will be seen on that display and will play a part big part in how you perceive a game. Know all to many that spend like 2000$ on a gaming rig and then spend around 120$ of them on a cheap display.

Showed up to GameStop at 8:30am on the 8th, bought a white OLED model, brought it home, transferred the user data over, and brought back my launch model Switch for $260, which makes the cost of the upgrade roughly $100. I cut that down a bit by trading in a couple of games I no longer played, bringing my total cost down to around $50

I have the original vita with OLED. Once you go OLED, you have a hard time going back. It might not be as big from sd to hd, probably more like hd to 4k but of course different, it's not the resolution, but display type. There's just nothing as nice as OLED that I know of anyway. It's simply a beautiful display.

@@kirin1230 Depends on the game and the circumstance within the game. Switch has basically 2 bottlenecks; the CPU and the memory bandwidth, while the GPU part is relatively good. It mostly struggles in games that relies heavily on data streaming, which is why they make the textures look so low-res in open world games. It also performs poorly in cpu-heavy tasks, why good-optimized games puts more general-purpose calculations on the gpu.

    • @trixniisama
      @trixniisama Před 2 lety +1

You are right, memory bandwidth is the major bottleneck of the current Switch design. I have two videos on my channel covering that in some way. Xenoblade 1 and 2 cannot render at 720p native resolution with stable 30fps unless you overclock the RAM. I also applied some CPU and GPU OC to get rid of all performance spikes, but it isn't as necessary.
Nintendo's main goal for the next Switch or a future revision should be on improving memory bandwidth by increasing the bus size or have more memory altogether. Reduce the node another time, to 12nm or 8nm and because of the increased efficiency, overclock the CPU to at least ~1300/1400MHz and GPU to ~800/900MHz and it will be a monster. Still not enough to compete with a full fat PS4 but well enough for a handheld for some more time.

As someone who is visually impaired, some VNs like DDLC require me to zoom in to read, I’m hoping the bigger OLED screen would make certain VNs easier to read (I don’t like to dock my switch except for multiplayer games and charging to make sure the battery is healthy). VNs do have a lot of static images, say, you could be on the same background for 30 minutes depending on how fast a reader you are. With this in mind do you think burn in may be something I have to worry about? (At most I usually only play for a few hours at a time, and scenes would shuffle around and some VNs also have animations from time to time so I wasn’t sure, hence why I asked?)

As for burn-in on OLED, you are 1000% correct. I have a 60" OLED LG and when the screen is a certain color (orange background) I can see hearts from BOW. Also, I use an Apple TV and made the mistake of using a picture slide show template that has static black bars between the pics, and those can be seen too. And when you watch this slide show it is not obvious that the bars are static given the pics scroll between them.
Bottom line, as you have stated just be careful when playing one game for a very long time, e.g., hours at a time over several days/weeks.
And I will not be upgrading to the Switch OLED for the same reasons you have pointed out, and the fact that I use my current system in dock mode anyway.

@Blue my white oled? Yes its still working well we actually got the Pokémon edition for Christmas so we now have the v1 switch, switch lite, and the 2 oleds and they all work great still.
However, the switch oled has a similar issue as previous models. A brand new switch out of the box has a great chance of having slightly loose joycons. I think it's called wobble, as in if you shook your switch lightly you feel the joycons shift a little. It's not super tight and solid. I thought it was just my V1 getting old but even the new ones have it. There's a way to diy fix it but it involves tape or actually replacing some parts with aftermarket parts made to be better. Just wanted to give you a heads up. A one piece case also easily fixes that issue if you play handheld. The oled screens have no issues or burn in so that's my only complaint. Nice wrap-up! The question, over here, needs to be re-phrased to: is it worth the additional $150 to get to OLED instead of the regular Switch 😭

I just got a used regular switch, and if u are a super gamer, then the oled maybe for you. If they didn’t run out of the oled, I would have gotten that one. But I’m glad I didn’t because, I don’t play games much, I want to, but build up to it. To me the reg switch, seems like a good size.

I have an original PS VITA with an OLED screen. Over a decade later, there's been no burn in on the screen.

I'm tempted to buy one but... I wonder if it's going to be easy to find on day 1. Also how does the Oled screen looks outside doors?

Im looking to upgrade from my day one switch but my biggest worry is the kickstand will just end up like the og switchs where it falls off only worse because it covers a larger area, do you feel it will end up like that or does it feel more sturdy and will stand the test of time?

when he's talking about burn-in meanwhile his switch is just kept on in the background lol
