  • The Switch OLED was released a bit over a year ago, back at launch I thought it was the definitive Nintendo Switch to grab, but not necessarily a must have upgrade if you already had one. Let’s talk about how that’s changed.

    Something to think about - I used to be a completely docked user. Like 100%. I found a good deal on an OLED, and ended up buying it. Since then, I’ve switched to being nearly only handheld. I think many people may be surprised at how the way they use their switch will change with the OLED, since the screen is better, it feels more solid, and the battery life is WAY better. Honestly, if you kept your switch in good condition, you should be able to fetch a decent price for it. Pick up a barely used OLED and you’ve got yourself an upgrade for like 50 bucks. Definitely worth it.

    The most noticeable difference for me were actually the bezels. I always found the original Switch bezels to be a bit big but going back to it after using the OLED for a while they seem comically large. It's crazy how much more immersive a screen is when it takes up more of a surface even when it's not even a major increase in actual screen size.

      Definitely. I was actually going to make this post myself lol. Love that they got rid of the bezels (as much as they could anyways) I wonder why they were that large to begin with.

    I’ve had a Switch since 2017 & I recently upgraded to the Switch OLED. I was the kind of user that played primarily in docked mode & occasionally in handheld mode. However, after upgrading to the OLED model I found myself using the Switch in handheld mode far more often. I now will regularly undock my Switch & just play it in handheld around the house when before I almost never did that. I didn’t expect the improvements to be so substantial but it’s almost like Switch 2 hardware with base switch internals. It’s not an essential upgrade but definitely has made a big difference for me!

    I picked up the OLED about a year ago. Sold my day one system and a bunch of games for it and it was totally worth the upgrade. The build quality is SO much better and the kickstand is actually usable. Not to mention I LOVE the larger and far better-quality display panel. I've been enjoying gaming on the go so much more than on the original and I'm even using it away from my gaming monitor significantly more just because there isn't a huge difference in visual fidelity.
    If you use handheld/tabletop mode a lot and can afford it, I'd honestly say it's far more worth the upgrade than you think it would be.

    Last year I played my Switch in handheld for a total of 7 days according to the yearly report. As that stats show, I’m mainly a dock user. I was hoping to stick to the OG Switch until the new Switch releases, but ended picking up the Pokemon Switch OLED version a few weeks ago. The biggest difference I notice is the weight/feel when comparing the two. Switch OLED feels more sturdy probably due to the higher quality materials as you mentioned. Another thing to note is the bezels. I didn’t mind them on my OG Switch, but man what a difference it makes when comparing the two. In 2023 I’ll definitely be playing in handheld a lot more than 7 days.

    I had to wait a few months to get the Oled but I got one from EBay and it was just the switch itself, no joycons or dock or anything cuz I already had those things, and for me it was totally worth the upgrade. In January 2022 Nintendo did a year in review for 2021 (which I hope they do it again cuz I really liked that) and it said I played 304 hours docked and 293 hours handeld, so it made logical sense for me to want that upgrade in build quality, that immaculate kickstand, and of course the Oled screen (which whenever I see other screens now I scoff because they aren’t Oled 😂)
    I still use my day 1 switch for mods so it’s not like it’s collecting dust or anything!

  • @exzisd
    @exzisd Před rokem +3

    I've had the OLED for just about 4 months now. Once I got the OLED the original Switch just sat in the corner and whenever I picked it up I really noticed how major of a difference the screen was; the OLED is totally worth the upgrade. I didn't play as much in handheld with the OG Switch and when I got the OLED I began and have kept playing in handheld since then. I play the majority of the time in handheld mode now and before with the OG model I maybe played handheld 25% of the time at most. The OLED made me WANT to play in handheld and combined with the kickstand which I also use as a sort of grip it's fantastic on the great screen. The size and filling out the bezel of the Switch tablet really makes it better. I just sold my launch Switch this last week and have no regrets though I do miss the memories of the early days of Switch. If anyone is on the fence I think it's totally worth the upgrade. To me it's more than just the screen; it's the way I play, the better battery, the grip, and more. Going back to the original Switch feels so dated imo. If you just play docked and don't care about handheld play so much then it's not worth it but if you want to play in handheld more and like handheld it's definitely worth it.

  • @nodnarb3540
    @nodnarb3540 Před rokem +2

    I’m a 15/85, handheld/docked player, and I got the OLED knowing full well I would benefit the least considering I only ever play on the go when I travel, which is maybe 8-9 times a year. But I still recommend it - because when you DO play handheld, it’s like a night and day difference with the screen.
    Plus, as Kevin said, you can feel the difference in the build quality.
    And finally, pretty much any special edition is always going to be for the OLED model. Case in point, Splatoon 3. I sold my original OLED and got one…..don’t know who has seen it up close, but it is hands down one of the most gorgeous consoles Nintendo has ever released!

    Total agreement. Granted, it was a bit easier for me: My choice was to either keep the Switch lite and add a normal one for docked mode - or sell the lite and upgrade to either the normal one or OLED one. Choice was very easy then. Coming from the lite, the OLED felt a bit big and heavy at first, but after a week, that was forgotten, and I've never looked back. If they'd drop an OLED lite now, I'd probably add one, though, since I kinda just love how compact it'd feel when out and about.

      It all depends on the direction Nintendo goes. If they they upgrade the Switch to the Switch +, with a more powerful CPU and GPU, then it might make sense to wait. It if they go in a different direction with a different type of physical media for games, the current Switch has a MASSIVE library of games to play, making it a better overall purchase. I honestly don’t expect a new upgraded console until 2025. Nintendo is going to wait until the chip market stabilizes more, before trying to launch a brand new console, with brand new chipsets.

So happy, I play docked once and a while, but it’s really nice having speakers that aren’t quite as a mouse, the coloring, hue and the turned off pixels on blacks looks insanely crisper and more beautiful like it should have been when it came out. It’s amazing how much of a difference the screen makes. Something that bothered me before was the kickstand was useless unless on a table. I like to lay in bed lay it on the bed and play with a controller. The oled let’s me now do that without falling over or being propped up. Previously me and my wife had 2 Switch Lites for handheld gaming and 1 regular Switch which we used as a "play games together on the big screen" console. We never even considered the regular Switch for handheld gaming. The joy cons felt very loose and overall we just didn't like it as a handheld device.
    After getting 1 OLED I was so blown away by the display and build quality that we bought another OLED the same day we bought the first one and got rid of the regular Switch and Switch Lites we had. Just the display alone is reason enough for a handheld player to upgrade imho. Especially if your handheld one is the Switch Lite. Now we both have an amazing handheld gaming experience and just dock one of the Switches when we want to play together (or solo) on the big screen.
    We did get a grip case on Amazon that still allows us to dock our Switches because the switch alone made my hands hurt after only a few minutes. But apart from that the Switch OLED is the perfect console for both of us.

I hope they keep it like how it is a switch like a switch to or switch prowords both in the handheld buy bread but with better guts or make it was sort of like stationary like your computer monitor and Tower stays at home and you can take the steam deck log into your library and display all your games that way but that'll have to require early online though

    • @birboii
      @birboii Před rokem +4

      The OLED doesn’t make the TV picture look better nor does it offer faster reading speeds. The Switch’s screen itself is OLED and hooking it up to a TV is like any other switch. Faster read times vary depending on your SD card. Most readers are the same supporting SDXC so if your card is that, you’re golden. You’re giving yourself placebo effects that aren’t real lmao.

    I got the launch day Switch and a friend of mine bought an OLED one and you can see the difference side by side. Yet I never kinda miss the OLED since I'm not having a constant comparison right im my face.
    I use the Switch as a handheld for 99% of the time and only dock it if some friends come buy and want to play some Mario Kart but otherwise it's the device for me if my partner wants to play on the PS or she just wants to watch some TV.
    So I would rather consider getting a Switch light instead of the OLED just because the formfactor is somewhat off for me. The regular Switch is just in a weird spot. It's too big for a handheld, to small to be played in Tabletop mode and not powerful enough to feel good in docked mode on a 55" 4k TV. So it's a true master of none.
    Now the Switch light is definitely better in the handheld department and the OLED is maybe better for Tabletop mode since the screen is a bit bigger and has has better stand yet I'm not sure...
    As a handheld my hands still cramp after a while yet I don't want to use aftermarket grips that make the console even bigger. I mean it's the same reason why I hesitate to get a Steam Deck. This thing is huge.
    So bow that we have a regular middle of the road Switch, a handheld oriented Lite a Tabletop oriented OLED, all we need is a Pro that can get more performance in docked mode by draining more constant power.

    Was planning on grabbing one kind of soon. During recent travels and times at home where table top is my best bet while the TV is in use, the slightest touch if I want to clear a hair would topple it over and the small screen of the normal one kinda sucks in tabletop. I’m willing to shell out a bit more for a long time enjoyment

After struggling like hell playing TOTK (first zelda game btw) on the go I decided to upgrade to the TOTK OLED. For those who play dock its not going to change much for you. For those who even spend 30%+ of your time un docked youll notice a difference immediately in your experience and be more content with playing on the go. If you have the switch v1 version (white box instead of full red), i would highly recommend you upgrade just for the battery life alone.

    I think the extra hour and a half to 2 hours of battery life is the biggest factor in deciding which version to get. The Lite, you have to go put it in the charge after every gaming session it feels like. Where as, with the oled, you could get done playing and come back to it later with 72% battery left.
    The difference is staggering.

    I like 75% played docked with OG Switch. With the OLED, it's about 50/50 now. I do notice the audio quality, earbuds isn't mandatory. The build quality is noticeable as in my OG switch vent also fell in, heat damage to back, etc (after 3 years of use tho). I rarely use the kick stand. Only play in tabletop while on planes. The display makes a big difference. When you go from playing docked on a 4k or 1080p tv and then pull out the OG Switch in handheld. It makes you never want to play handheld. The OLED doesn't feel as jarring in comparison. It's similar to the difference of old plastic smartphone screen to today's glass screens. Or like the basic Kindle Fire screen to an iPad glass screen.
    Ethernet port is not that big of a deal. Just get a $10 usb ethernet adapter on AMZ.

I’ve been having sunny days from where I come from recently and for a few games like Tears of the Kingdom, it gets so dark I had to squint my eyes. Due to it being very sunny. Does the OLED solve that problem? Does the OLED screen make it easier to see when in a cave or in the depths in Tears of the Kingdom or Phazon Mines in Metroid Prime Remastered during a sunny day?
