Nintendo Switch OLED Review Vs Original | One Month Later

- Reviewing the Nintendo Switch OLED Edition one month later, plus comparison vs the original gaming console for battery life, performance, display tech and more. I've been testing this portable gamer for a few weeks and yep, the Switch OLED has smashed my expectations, even though it's not the Pro model we wanted from Nintendo.
You can grab a Switch OLED now from the official website via this affiliate link: fave.co/3AYI14g
This new version of the original console boasts more upgrades than the bigger, brighter, punchier display - although that is the best bit. Sharp contrast, deep blacks and poppy hues make those 720p visuals much more attractive. The Nintendo Switch OLED also serves up stronger audio via the redesigned speakers. Bluetooth headphones support has been added, although this does need some refinement.
Other improvements vs the original Switch and Lite include a revamped kickstand, more premium design work and upgraded storage. Battery life has also improved thanks to the refreshed display. So overall, the OLED version may not be a Pro, as the performance is sadly the same as before. All the same, it's an easy recommendation if you haven't got the original or Lite, while we're waiting for the Pro.

My 8 year old has comendeered my switch. That OLEDis looking mighty tempting...
I am in the same exact boat. Does daddy need this?? Hmm
Same situation...went ahead and got it, everyone's happy
My girlfriend stole mine. Purchase is justified.
brother took the one we were sharing and deleted my account. this is for me.
same boat with my 4 and 6 year old haha. I just got an Oled on amazon.
Still happy with my original at the minute. I can't compensate paying for the upgrade personally. But fully understand why you would go for it as a first time switch buyer
Same here. If I had a 2017 Switch I'd upgrade to this for sure, but as I'm only a year and a half in to mine I'm happy to wait. Besides the mob might turn up looking for protection money which leads to to my Switch having an unfortunate accident.

Thats why I’m learning to wait it out and be patient nowadays. Doing exactly that with a PS5. I’m waiting till the PS5 slim comes out and it gets a price drop. By then all the flaws will be worked out and more features and games will be available and cheaper too.
@scripteaze Dude that is not the only difference. Its a upgraded OLED screen that is bigger which is always a plus. It has 64 gigs internal storage instead of 32 and the stand is way better than the original switch. So it has many new things and better things going for it. Its not just a screen. It several improved features and a OLED screen. That is a huge upgrade in itself alone and worth the 50 extra bucks. You don’t have to buy it so don’t. Many of us already have switches and will buy it like me. You and no complainer will change my mind. Its worth a upgrade. So I have extra switches as back ups laying around. Big deal. Its a BACKUP thats always good like having 2 cars or more in the garage.
@scripteaze Oh, I see what you did there. Cute. Did your mom help you with that, or was she too busy helping your father find his purse? JK JK I'm just saying you have two moms 🤓
I absolutely love your down to earth delivery. Lots of great info not in other reviews. Thanks for the update.
With the OLED upgrade, the Switch is now a joy to watch CZcams with. It's a shame it still doesn't have Netflix.

Picked up on OLED and very happy with the bigger screen size. Paired with my Hori Split Pro joycons, its feels great...the stock joycons feel small and uncomfy. The screen for my old Switch looks like an old cheap tablet now with that huge bezel. If you have no fingernails, the cart door is way harder to open than the old Switch door.

Can you watch CZcams on it
@@WhiteEnglish ofcourse you can

THANK YOU. You just gave a good review unlike the stereotypical reviews that only bring up the "its just a larger screen and that's it" reviews that are bandwaggoning trash. So, thanks very much for this, you brought up a few things I didn't yet know about it! ☺
Agreed
Great review especially when I'm getting my OLED switch next week. New to your channel and will be checking out more videos over time!
My OLED was MY first switch, but I played the OG countless times at a cousins. I dont miss a dime spent on it. Bought Shining Pearl to relive some nostalgia from my DS days. I've enjoyed my switch so much, my PC is getting jealous.
I've been playing Nintendo games since 1987...long time ago.. Before that Commodore VIC 20... & Commodore 64... Graphics are million times better today... But Ive got lot of good memories as a child, & my own children playing the PS1 as it wss there first console... I'm sure your PC will be back on again..

Great video! I feel great about upgrading to the OLED. Now my sister can have my older switch! Thanks for this 😊
Great, informative review, straight to the point. Subbed!
I gave ordered one, should be here somepoint. before Christmas so excited!!!! Thanks for the good review.
Thank you for getting to the point! Love it.
Just got the oled one today and I like it. I sold my regular switch to a friend and I was able to find one of these. Stock on the oled ones have been pretty scarce lately. Everyone is sold out and the used market is over listing
Have 4 switches, 2 original (one batter battery) and a sword/shield lite and I must say I am in love with the white joycon switch oled been playing the hell out of metroid/pokemon and its a great Console, would definitely recommend getting an oled if you don't have a switch at the moment.

Awesome Review! There finally Retail price on Amazon! Just ordered one! Can’t wait! 🤩
Thank you for talking about outside gameplay! I've been looking to see if it was a big difference
Great review, I've been on the fence about buying a switch but your review has really helped me out.
Now this is the review i've been waiting for
Just picked an oled up a couple days ago, went from switch lite tho, so I haven’t used the normal switch, and it’s awesome. Absolutely love it so far.
Picked up the OLED Switch today. I went to buy the Lite but when I saw the OLED next to it I knew I had to splurge and get it instead. My only experience was playing with the display models so far but I'm looking forward to gaming on this bad boy. Some of my first purchases are Super Smash Bros and Metroid.
Good choice. I just sold my lite and used the money towards the OLED. So much better
I sold my OG Switch model for less than I should have, regretted selling it, and now I'm planning on buying the OLED.
With my luck they'll announce their next gen console in a couple months and I'll regret buying it for a second time.
Play me in Smash. I am a streamer!
Great review! Just wondering… what would you recommend a first time buyer? I never had the original so for me I’m looking at a $50 price difference at the most…
My son has the original switch and I just bought the OLED. He said the build quality is much better with less flex and creaking with the joycons. He said the screen is much better as its the dock. He did say that its very compelling but not worth the upgrade. If you don't have a switch like me it's a great device. I love it.
I traded in my old switch and I got like $225.00 store credit at gamestop I only pay like $140.00 out of my pocket for the new switch oled.

Thank you, all the info I was looking for. Still very happy with my first gen Switch from launch day. As I primarily play docked, none of the changes have impact on my play. Here's to hoping for an upgrade in gen 3.
Still have my original controllers and pro controller all working perfectly, no drift that I can tell. So I can't even complain about that aspect.
This means that you have one that you’ve been using for 5 years? How long the battery last in handheld mode? Some people can’t get more than hour out of it now. Is that true for you as well?
@@jasons890 I've used mine almost exclusively in handheld mode and got it a few months after launch. I can get maaaybe two hours out of it before I'm scrambling to plug it in, if I'm lucky. The more intense the game and that battery drain spikes real quick lol So I do think I'd feel the benefits from jumping up to the OLED ver; I think my lil sis will be happy to get my original 😂
@@chickenapplepie3141 if you mostly play handheld, it’s a world difference I promise you.
Great comparison review between the two Switches! I will hold on to upgrade from my first gen Switch to the new 2021 upgrade simply because all my games collection are retro based games so I won’t need a higher screen resolution. To be honest your review was pretty tempting 😆
The resolution isn’t higher. The colors pop more on the OLED. Resolution is the same across all models.
amazing review, made my choice towards the oled quite clear! Cheers
I have a 17 model, andl the way up to its launch I said I wasn't going to upgrade...but my will power has always been weak when it comes to new gaming hardware. So I picked one up on launch and gave my children my old one.
So glad I did, as the OLED model pretty much fixes all the problems I had with the original, such as the creaking & slightly weak feeling Joycon rails, the terrible kickstand and lackluster speakers, plus that screen is soooo much better. Not just the OLED quality, but the larger size is noticeably better too. Infact its screen is so good I have been playing it almost entirely handheld, apposed to the the opposite with my 17 model.
The original switch also has bluetooth audio now, it was just a software update that came out near the same time as the release of the OLED model, I've completely stopped using any other form of audio on mine.
Do you also get the crackles that Spurt commented on? Why wouldn't you mention that?
@@TheUrbanEpicure he probably doesn't experience it since it depends on the Bluetooth device, but the latency can be annoying for some headphones. The Switch's WiFi/Bluetooth chip is not very good sadly
I love watching CZcams videos on the new OLED screen while I’m eating. My phone was always too small and my iPad was too big, but the Switch OLED strikes the perfect balance with a small footprint. You can even connect Airpods and see video previews before selecting them. I love the kickstand on this thing. I never used youtube on my original switch but now I can’t eat without my Switch OLED right next to me.
that is a habit you are better off breaking
What are you talking about?
watching YT on 720p screen? no thanks
What a strange comment
I usually wait a while after things like the switch come out to see if they have a mid cycle refresh like this and then buy that instead so I went straight for the OLED and I'm really enjoying it
Same
I always never though to buy the original switch because I couldn’t stand how thick those bezels were but now that they slapped such a high quality OLED screen on there, I immediately picked one up and I’m so glad I waited.
I just got the original as a gift. I hope to return it, and buy the new one but, rumors of the switch 2 have me thinking I can wait longer.
@@deadlyassasin714 a new switch won't become coming soon, and OLED is right way to go
@@ESP12345 yes, I know if it's in stock I will exchange it for the oled version but otherwise I can wait a couple years since I just have 1 game on it and many unplayed ps4 games.
@@ESP12345 just realized oled and og switch have the same performance docked so I will keep it if I can't upgrade.
Just got the oled today! The bezels of the original have ALWAYS bothered me for about the 2 years that I’ve had it. The oled was so worth it to me and the black pixels really make the games more immersive.
The dig on James corden earned you a sub my friend hahahah
We all want sharper display on Switch and battery life. Cannot have both in the current iteration with larger battery making system heavier and perhaps bulkier.
thanks for your review...it's very cleary and easy understand
Sold my original switch over a year ago and missed it. Picked one of these babies up. Should be a good time!
I have the V2 but I do think the OLED is nice. I like how it has ethernet support, and I hear it has a padded dock now which they should of done from the beginning but oh well. I play only on my TV so I won’t be upgrading until a whole new system drops but I give the OLED a 9/10,def worth it for new switch buyers imo.
You can buy the dock on the Nintendo store they’re like £60 i think ripoff just get a adapter plug it in your original dock works fine
Half the price Nintendo sell them for like £26
I have the original i only play docked handheld looks terrible in comparison i prefer it on a 50inch 4K hdr Samsung tv even though it only puts out 1080p from the switch the games look better on the switch screen everything is shrunken down for the small screen looks worse
this is the first time Im watching a video about the oled model. Ive been out of the loop of nintendo switch stuff for like a year and a half now but just got back in to playing it.
I think no switch pro is a good idea atm. The tech just isn't there yet and there are huge chip shortages. I would happily wait 2-3 years for a better everything. The Steam deck will have also been out for a few years so nintendo will likely step their game up even more if the deck sells well.
Good stuff. You have a new subscriber. 👍🏻
I have Nintendo Switch V2 for almost a year and i am quite happy with it. While its nice that they release new console, its to early, maybe in 2024-5 but now in 2021, to early. I guess il stick with my current Switch for next few years.
Yeah bro v2 is good enough no need to upgrade.
I'm a first buyer so OLED is the way to go
I just got one for my son today. It's going to be his Christmas gift. Your honest review brings confidence to my purchase. I paid $350 dollars.
Considering I've owned my switch since it first launch in 2017, and how the battery is improved from later iterations, getting the oled would for one fix the battery problem and give me a better screen cause I mostly play handheld anyhow, and a better kickstand in case I ever thought about playing co op with anyone *if I had friends*
Good review. I like the new model I bought the first one years ago but coming back to Nintendo I'm definitely grabbing the newer model looks sweet
i subbed for those analogies, very nice
Great video! Everything I needed to know except… Does the OLED work on the original dock and vice versa?
Got a oled switch as my first switch loving it, games are so pricey tho!
It looks neat! The screen looks slightly bigger and it looks like a quick cash grab if u have the original Switch and the Switch Lite. I love playing the Switch on table top mode with the Switch Pro controller! It feels more comfortable and it gives u that lil home console feel!
I can't tell if this comment is positive or negative lol
@@Romcomm_ it could be a combination of both! 😂, i tend to use the Switch Lite on the go more because it feels more compact and portable, i tend to leave the regular Switch at home docked to the tv 📺.
I have 2 Switches (a Lite and that OLED) - upgraded basically as soon as it launched because I needed to spend - and it's better that I now can play Switch games on my TV.

If you have a launch 2017 Switch this is great upgrade or if your just thinking of buying in now then this is the Switch to buy. I'm only a year and a half in to mine so it would be a waste of orifice no. 1 cash for me. However those in the same boat who have all the orifices full with cash should remember, Nintendo will release special editions of the OLED, so don't be to quick to jump ship.
Honestly, the V2 is a very good handheld console. I don't plan to upgrade because I do more docked gaming, but even otherwise it holds its own very well. I compared the screen to that of a Galaxy smartphone's and it's a very good display! Not to mention the screen size is the sweet spot which provides the perfect area of focus...
Loved the review.... loved the ragging on James Cordon even more 🤣🤣🤣

Great video I will be upgrading to the OLED version.I have the original version the sound went out,it over heats and battery life isn't great.I can't wait to play Mario Cart on that OLED 7 inch screen.
If Nintendo makes another Switch, I really hope they make the Joy-cons bigger and more ergonomic.
Couldn’t agree more.. it’s too thin and doesn’t fit the shape of the hand… the wii U controller was thick but it was easy to hold at least

The next Switch will compete with Valve's Steam Deck. Hope they really crank up its performance. Kind of sad what kind of resolutions the current Switch is running on.
Probably should have watched this **before** buying the Switch OLED. Still, no regrets yet. My Switch V1 has a noticeably shorter battery life than it used to and it’s cooling fan sometimes makes a grinding noise so I think the OLED will make a good update
had recently started gaming o my switch agna and the battery life was definitley an issue im definitley looking forward to making this purchase tomorrow
very nice vid mate.. Thank You👍
The card slot is way harder to open on the oled, sucks for people like me with short fingernails. Never had this issue with the original so it's baffling as to why they changed it.
Strange as reviewer had no issues.
I'm tempted but gonna wait until a pro version is released. By then there should be enough exclusives released to make the purchase worthwhile for me as a pc guy. The ps5 will come first for me given the greater amount of exclusive titles like god of war and horizon zero dawn that I will definitely want to play.
Nintendo Switch OLED, the most needed unnecessary update that we all wanted. 😃
I just upgraded yesterday, my OG Switch from mid 2018 was a bit worn out to be fair, battery life wasn't what it use to be and it has latency issues, it also looks quite used, i only play handheld and I've put thousands of hours across various different games over that 4.5 years.
I even waited over a year before grabbing the OLED just to get more out of my OG.
Worth the upgrade for me.
I just ordered a new Splatoon switch OLED. My current switch is in good condition though so I am a little unsure of upgrading but I only play handheld, needed a new dock, and only use the external speakers
I bought a switch on launch day and I've gotten four years put of it but I had to really out some work into it (the battery and fan died and the plastic back cracked so I replaced all three at different times) so I upgraded to the OLED on its launch day and I've got to say, it's an amazing screen for gaming. Like my phone but bigger and brighter.

Keep in mind tht the target demographic for this switch was NOT people who already own a switch!!
Don't let that stop you from buying one if you want one, though!! (assuming you can actually find one)
The only best way to find one is buy one off Nintendo’s website and have it shipped to you for free I think if you buy from them. Could be wrong though on free shipping but at least you can get one from them directly easier than anywhere else.

the old Action Man grip lol that took me back
Just wanted to mention that the original switch also supports bluetooth headset connection after the updates, so therefore it is not only limited to the oled model. I have the original switch, i’d say it is not worth it. I will just wait for the next gen model insteaf
I've had the switch oled for months and had no idea it supported bluetooth headphones. Hell yeah.
And I was thinking the original was too big for my tiny hands already 🤣 Nice review!
Really Nintendo should have introduced THIS model from day one.
Lots to love about it, but it's absolutely criminal that they didn't give us a 1080p display. Though there'll probably be a OLED Pro in a years time that gives us that.
60fps @ 720p on a 7" display is not only sufficent, but the fluidity and smoothness of gaming at that resolution is far superior to the choppy 30fps we would get @ 1080p. They knew what they were doing by "holding out."
if you want it to overheat and drop frames with bad battery then sure
@@2v_media ok fanboy.
@@erictseng8071 no. They couldve also upgraded to the new tegra chip.
@@quattro4468 ever heard of the chip shortage?
Just curious, when you say “first model”, are you actually meaning the 2017 through mid 2019 HAC-001 launch model? Or do you mean the subtle refresh “red box” model from mid 2019 to present time HAC-001-01. The difference between those two standard models is the newer red box model got a better battery for longer life over the original launch model (up to 2 more hours in general) and it had a slightly different chip (the performance was the same overall but ran cooler temperature-wise). Anyways, when you said first model ran 4 hours on video at full brightness, my launch model couldn’t make 3 full hours even 5 years ago when it was new. So I’m assuming your standard switch is a red box “refresh” with the better battery than the true “first model”
Damn... Corden really got it in this video 🤣
I’m still mad it’s not an actual pro. We need a more powerful switch! But I’ll be getting the Oled because my original launch switch is now almost 5 years old and the battery is shit. Having double the battery life plus the much better screen will be nice for portable mode
Have you had any issues with Green Tint on Nintendo Switch OLED? Other models here in our country have issues with brand new OLED Screen panel saying that they were seeing green tint.
No problem on mine 👍
I'm very tempted to get the OLED, because my switch I've had for 5 years has a broken fan and overheats too easily.
Could you please tell me what games you were showing during this recording. I recognized Metroid but didn’t know what the other one was but it looked really good on the OLED with the deep blacks.
That was Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls edition and Doom 64, then he showed a few seconds of Guardians of the galaxy which in my opinion is pretty mediocre but that’s just me. Diablo is really fun, and Doom 64 that name alone holds its own weight, fond memories of playing Doom on the pc when it first came out.
My mother is 77 and used to play animal crossing and harvest moon on the gamecube. Should I buy her this one or would the older one suffice for that?
If you plan to use this for its original intended "On the go" option its worth a look into if you are a first time buyer of a switch. HOWEVER if you plan to just keep this connected to a TV Go for the non OLED and save some money. All the improvements are aimed at those looking to play on the go.
Stop assuming handheld mode is only for on the go you can play the switch OLED at home to idiot
Any opinions on reports that some OLED Switch units have a green tint on the left side portion of their screens? It's going around reddit a lot and no big youtuber is apparently talking about it.
I'm replacing my old original switch with this one, my old switch had issues with the slide brackef for the left joycon, a piece broke off it and it now will no longer snap in place, instead sliding up and down indefinitely, I'm Norway getting a old switch repaired is twice as expensive as getting a new one.
The OLED version brings out the colors more of course. But I just got a Switch Lite THIS year so, it's no buy for me!
Next Switch Pro probably will opting custom Soc from Samsung+AMD collaboration..i see it got the power and performance high enough to be called pro as differences from the OG Switch..and also will be using less power from a ARM artitecture..
Might pick up this OLED so I can feel free to homebrew my OG v1 switch. Cheers!
