In my hands I have a rare, modded OLED switch, and I'm going to show you what you can do with an modded switch, how to tell if your switch is moddable, and how to mod your OLED switch if you can do so. I also go over all the cool things you can do with a CFW switch, like game streaming, running android on a switch, and using custom firmwares to do all types of cool stuff like game modding on switch, among other things. This video took forever, and I really hope you enjoy how it came out! Months of researching lead up to this.

I’ve always been fascinated by jailbreaking. Makes you realise how the switch is capable of so much more than nintendo gives
A steamdeck better.
That's how the Vita felt too. Sony abandoned it but the homebrew community brought it back to life

@@JoshuaSouthgate And it's not better.

It sucks that Nintendo are so adamant about cracking down on modding as modding breeds a lot of awesome innovative stuff. Nintendo should honestly just hire some of the people who're creating this custom software as they're clearly skilled.
IMO, once you buy a piece of hardware, that hardware belongs to you & you should be allowed to do what you want with it without the company you bought it from breathing down your neck. How is the tech world supposed to move forward if we don't let people tinker with machines? Same goes for software, giving people the tools to learn & create is a positive for everyone involved.
Completely agree with you
I completely agree. However I don't think it's modding specifically that makes Nintendo more tight with security. I think it's more so the chance of titles being pirated that causes them to act this way. Modding itself can be extremely beneficial but it opens the floodgates to A LOT more problems.
@@CrimmyThePrequel this is true. Look at how they dont care about the 3DS modding scene anymore since they've already saturated the market and all possible income from that handheld.
They dont care if people mod a 10 year old handheld anymore and pirate games for it because they've already maximized sales for the device. The switch, however, is still a fresh piece of hardware which makes sense as to why nintendo would still be protective of the console.
@@sylentnoise932 EXACTLY 😎 that's why I'm gonna wait till the switch is hitting it's end to mod it

Just wanted to tell you Thanks for these extremely thorough videos and describing everything to a Tee! You put alot of work into this and it shows!😁
Nintendo hardware is not that fancy good, why use the Wii U switch for this ?
I think jailbreaking is excellent for extending the lifespan of older systems. I had a PSP which had sat in my drawer for around a decade barely being used until I jailbroke it and added emulators. Now it's my go-to handheld on the go, even over my Nintendo switch. I think companies should allow for legacy devices to be jailbroken, cause it gives them a second life when they would otherwise be forgotten in the digital age.
Same here I now a days only use to play old classic games such as nes, snes sega etc
That was my Vita's life. Lived in the drawer gor years before Henkaku . PSP and Vita is the best handheld I've owned in general + at least they supported a Mp4's app for storing video s on a memory card.
Maybe they should have a 10yr window frame then its free to be jailbroken legally and freely, but not like that’ll stop these guys from exploring lol.
@@garytamburo.6922 you know I never thought about jailbreaking my PSP it's sitting somewhere in a drawer I kept it all these years didn't even think about jailbreaking it could you possibly provide tips in how to do it?
You’re going to love the Steam Deck. Play PC games, stream Xbox and PlayStation games and emulate up to 30+ systems.
Jailbroken tech really shows just how much the hardware it’s operating on is capable of and lots of the stuff isn’t even that hard to implement. Yet majority of this stuff will never get done. It really sucks, Nintendo in this scenario will put more resources into stopping this kind of thing instead of implementing what they see is popular within the community.
A $200 android phone is more capable these days
It's just another computer. It can do whatever a computer can do when it's not using an OS thats locked

I am looking to mod my v1 switch too but I am a little hesitant about it. Is it true that when you mod your switch, you cannot play online games or play from a cartridge anymore?
@t.r.s.eakamuneebatif9173 Hi, so the thing is, it's more complicated.
When you mod your switch, the whole OS gets cloned. Meaning you now have 2 versions of it. The original will remain unhacked and you can do everything you could do before. The cloned one will be hacked, and with proper procedure, you can still connect to the internet with it, just not to Nintendo's servers, meaning any online game will lose that functionality.
About the cartridge games thing, that's fake. No Idea where you heard about it but you can use cartridges both on the original Os and the hacked Os

Nice. I just wanna ask, how hard is it to mod the switch? I dont want to mess it up because of the difficulty and messing up my switch
a thing to note, you can play online with mods enabled, but you have to be careful about them. Smash ultimate and mario kart require you to only use pure visual mods or play in a friend lobby with people that also use the same mods, whereas in splatoon you get banned from it for changing anything.
I always like the detail and work you put into your videos I have to do that with my switch since I have a v1 switch
I dig your hair. Looks good on you and is iconic. Thanks for all the hard work!
You put in a lot of work here. Clearly explained everything 👍
3:03 You can also mod a joycon to have a button that acts as an RCM jig. You just open it up, solder a cable and a button onto some specific pins on the joyon, and you have a perfectly normal joycon with a button on the back that allows it to work as an RCM jig.
That some how seems a whole lot longer than just using a jig. 😂. Did you see how he DIDNT have to open anything up and solder some shit.. yh.. that's a good thing, bud. 👍🏽 😂
Solder a button that will be pressed a total of one time. Great call 👍
One of the most useful videos I've seen, answered all my questions in a single video.
There are exceptions when playing mods online. In Smash Ultimate, there’s a mod called HDR that changes mechanics to feel like Melee which is possible to play online as long as the person you’re playing with has the mod as well. It’s safe since it does not cause any disconnections and Nintendo can’t recognize any changes and raise red flags

Great video! As a happy long term user of a modded switch, I'd like to add this: you can also send the hekate payload easily using Android phone apps and an usb-c to usb-c cable. That's how I i do it. I honestly forget the name of the app I use but I'll check and add it in a bit.
When you said check this out and pulled out the graph, your charisma grasped me. I’m hooked
Such a shame Nintendo is cracking down so hard on this -- emulation on the OLED switch would be incredible. I get Nintendo is trying to sell its own emulation through the Expansion Pass, so cracking down on modding is benifical to them, but it sucks considering how weak their paid offering is.
I don't think it's that weak at this point. They are offering like 40 games over 4 systems, with more coming. Enough that I don't feel ripped off for a few bucks a month
It’s possible to jailbreak it but it is extremely difficult. There will be a lot of troubleshooting and there are times that the entire system will be bricked.
@@cheeeeezewizzz the quality of the emulation is poor compared to any emulator by fans I've seen and 40 is not nearly enough considering the plentiful quality library of the N64

A very well narrated tutorial and you explained everything really well. Here's my big dilemma - I already have several V1 unpatched Switches but want an OLED one for just the screen - but to buy one new it will cost me around $300, then around $100 for the mod chip and around $200 for someone to do the installation/soldering for me so it will end up costing me $600 to jailbreak the OLD model - is it worth it in your opinion or is the V1 ones good enough?
I just sent the left Joycon to fix due to the drift malfunctioning. I was about to buy the usb Bluetooth adapter in the wait but then i saw this vid and now i’m playing with my PS4 controller. Thanks, really, i love you.
With the switch web browser being able to be accessed by changing DNS stuff _(don't ask me how i've never done it)_ I'm hoping modding a switch will be more easier for people interested in it cuz the OLED setup looks extremely hard lol. Awesome video! :)

Thank you for the info. I started my CFW journey with this video and I was able to find the resources I needed to install it on my own switch.
One note I would make is that AutoRCM will cause the battery to drain abnormally fast compared to not using it. I would suggest not using it unless you really don't want to use the jig. There is an overlay you can use to reboot back to hekate or even directly to Android if you have it installed. It's probably only useful on V1 Switches though that so not need the modchip. It being able to run CEMU with the switch acting as Wii U touchpad is brilliant. Being able to stream the rest of the PC library, as well as being able to stream other consoles (ps4/5, Xbox series) and game pass, this is really the ultimate experience. If only Nintendo officially supported the PS and Xbox streaming apps, game pass, and Steam link.

5:15 *Just an FYI that Applet Mode is not always reliable when running certain apps in the Homebrew Menu.* Due to the fact that you're accessing it from the Gallery, you aren't able to use the full RAM. To get the most efficiency out of your experience using the Homebrew Menu, simply load any game / app on your Switch's home menu as you normally do and make sure you hold the R button while doing so. This triggers a title override that, instead of launching the game / app, directs you to the Homebrew Menu, but at least this way, you have access to the full RAM, enabling you to run certain apps at 100% efficiency.
I saw that on the guide in the description! :D
for some reason when i launch the homebrew menu with a game i have to hold both shoulder buttons down at once, just pressing R does not work, i'm sure with recent atmosphere builds they may have changed it
I really like how your language is so precise and correct! So I want to correct you when you give wrong information. (don't worry, what you said wrong is technical, and wouldn't matter for most users)
All switches, including the newer once, can go into RCM mode by using a jig (which as far as the SOC is concerned, equates to pressing the home button), and volume + and power.
What was patched on v2 switches, mariko switches (fun note mariko is named after Wolverines japanese girlfriend), switch lite, and OLED was (grossly simplified) a buffer overflow exploit that allowed you to send a package that would be read by the rcm mode, but you send a so big package, that when rcm mode read the package it continued to write information from the package outside the area where it was supposed to store this information. And the package had so much information that it would write to an area where it would look for what to do next. And so it could write commands to the RCM mode, and essentially (grossly simplified) open the front door to homebrew.
Thats why in v2, mariko, switch lite, and OLED you need a modchip that sends an unexpected voltage spike to the SOC, getting it to "glitch out"
Oh back to the Mariko name, Mariko is the codename for the X1+ SOC in all but the v1 (unpatched) and v2 (patched) switches. the v1 and v2 switches have a X1 SOC, which has the code name Logan. Which is Wolverines most used civilian alias which he has used for most of his life. Nvidia has used scientist names for codenames for their architectures, but super hero civilian names for Tegra SOC's. The newest Tegra SOC based on Ada Lovelace arcitecture, is codenamed Thor.
V2 Switches [HAC-001(01) are Mariko based. V1 Switches (HAC-001 no extra -01) are Erista, and some of them were patched too. Mariko SoCs weren't produced until 2019, and Fusee Gelee was patched in April 2018.
Its a very common misconception that *every* V1 Switch is "unpatched", which is untrue. Just thought I'd clear that up.

This video is what ultimately inspired me to hack my Switch. My old Switch was starting to have issues to the point that the system was cracking open from the top portion. This was because the battery inside the system started to swell up. After getting a Switch OLED as a replacement console, I decided to salvage my old Switch by replacing the battery, changing the backplate AND modding it so I can give it a tad bit more life. It was a bit of a headache trying to install the custom firmware as some of the guides I read through were a little on the vague side but after many retries, I got my Switch fully hacked and it is every bit as amazing as this video showcases.
How’d it go?
@CyberSlashO8 aside from the headaches like I said, it's been a success. My only advice here is to not do custom backgrounds because whenever a Switch firmware update goes live, you have to make sure to remove all that before installing the firmware, otherwise the screen goes green. Took me months to figure that out after reading, reading and reading through forums. Oh, also, make sure to install the firmware manually instead of directly from Nintendo. There's a site that helps you do that easily so there's that.
All that side, its been smooth and enjoyable.

RIP CZcams Vanced. I'm still using it but I know one day it will sadly stop working 😥
