- Today I'm trying out a Radiomaster Ranger ELRS module, and a RP1-V2 receiver for 2.4GHz ELRS. I'm just getting started with it, but already kind of impressed. The Penguin is still a fun plane to fly! lol

I've also upscaled this video to 1440p in hopes of getting more quality (less compression) through CZcams. Let me know if it looks better than my usual uploads!

The 🐎Deer is at 9:23 jumping on the right of the screen...😋😋
ELRS is definitely one of the more exciting new technologies that greeted me when I jumped back into the hobby this year.
A Penguin, a Deer and Crows .. sounds like a farm, or a fun zoo. Didn't see any cows this time around.
Nice flight and update. Great vivid color in this video too. If ELRS continues to impress, it might be worth trying on the Dart250, vs. the larger 900 Mhz antenna on the a tiny wing.
Awesome flying, Keith! 😃
And now there's the Gemini module... 2 transmitting antennas with the possibility of using 2 antennas on the receiver as well... Imagine that. 😬
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

I've been wondering what kind of performance to expect from ELRS as far as range. Thanks for the narration you gave some good info. I don't know of anyone else that narrates their flights and I always seem to learn something new each time. The Penguin, to me, is not a pretty bird, lol but the people that have flown them seem to really like them a lot.
I'm surprised you waited this long to test out ELRS. I dumped all my dragonlink gear a year ago and haven't regretted it.
I just never really needed it, ELRS is about the only R/C link I didn't have... lol I've still yet to find anything that matches Dragonlink for the telemetry though. I miss not having the transparent serial link over the radio when I fly Ardupilot with anything else.

I like the radiomaster pwm receivers cuz they can also be used as just regular receivers or pwm...
I also keep mine on Dynamic power but I've had mine jump up 2/1 watt within a mile before I simply because I was over a neighborhood of houses I love the radiomaster diversity receivers
It did bump to 1W for a few seconds at about 1.5 miles.
Probably lost telemetry for a second there, if it can't hear the receiver it pushes the power up to max, assuming the worst lol
Dang the Radiomaster module is way more conservative with dynamic output power than the BetaFPV 1W module. If it sees -80dBm, it's stepping the power up. That alone is compelling me to switch over as it would save heaps of power. (also I think the backpack function is DOA)
They all run the same software - dynamic power is based on SNR and LQ, in addition to raw RSSI.
@@MUSTARDTIGERFPV
Odd, the SNR should be quite solid as I tend to fly in the middle of nowhere, and I'm seeing perfect LQ.
@@jaysonrees738 even short drops will bump power - dynamic power plays it really safe. I've gone some considerable distance (>10km) on 25mW, but it's nice to have safety margins.
@@MUSTARDTIGERFPV I think I might know what the deal is. I use a Matek-R24-D receiver on some of my stuff, and it's just using antenna diversity. Thinking that when it does a check for better signal, it briefly appears to be doing poorly as I have the secondary mounted horizontally. Perhaps I'll have to swap to a true diversity module at some point.
@@jaysonrees738 It could be momentary drops in the telemetry link too. The transmitter needs to know what the signal looks like at the receiver end to know if it should bump the power up. If it can't "hear" what the receiver is sending back, it defaults to pushing the power up. If the telemetry link drops, the transmit power goes up.
Keith, can you say anything about how to get the transmit power (25mW for this video) and RSSI dbm value to display in the OSD. thanks
Sure! This is Inav on this one. In the configurator, look on the left side for OSD, on that tab where you configure the OSD layout, scroll down and look in the left side for CRSF RX Statistics. You can show RX RSSI in dBm, RX Link Quality %, RX Uplink SNR in dB, and TX power in mW. This all works with ELRS since it also uses CRSF protocol.
I have my models running on Ardupilot so I will have to settle for AP capabilties. Thanks
@@larrys8645 Most of mine are too. I wanted one in my fleet with Inav and Walksnail together in the same plane for testing purposes. With Ardupilot, for now the best we can do is a scaled (0-100%) RSSI, and LQ. I'm not 100% sure how RSSI is scaled since it was originally written for Crossfire, and I know ELRS's receiver sensitivity changes based on different RF modes/Packet rates. LQ should be fine. I'd like to have TX power on the OSD too if we could. Maybe at some point in the future! lol
Late to the Party m8....Im invested in 868mhz Crossfire...A bit pissed that TBS have dissapeared off the Radar and can't even buy a new Reciever.....Enjoyed the video M8 as usual, thanks...🤔😳😏😀🇬🇧
the only thing i wish ardupilot have is the dynamic tx power osd element (spot the deer ) was so fast i give up on elrs because they become so complicated to update and setup anyway radiomaster is #1 radio control that will last forever if you don't break it .
Yeah I do wish there was more support for things like this. I have Inav on the Penguin so I can show all those values. I believe Arducustom does add support, but I haven't used that yet. I've stayed on the main branch of AP mostly testing new fixes and things here and there, and because the custom branch doesn't have support for some of the hardware I'm using in other planes.

I'm the first one.... greetings from Colombia😋
