- Welcome Shiny, Crafty people! Tim Totten here with sewing projects you can do yourself!
This totally-easy gift bag has a cool snap-back closure and was made from one simple placemat and required NO CUTTING of the placemat! It uses a fantastic trick with a metal measuring tape to create the closure.
This is a great project to make a reusable gift bag and it's a fun, quick project to make with kids and grandkids!
To make this easy bag, you'll need the following:
1 standard placemat to match or coordinate with your decor
Matching thread (if desired)
One metal measuring tape
Screwdriver to disassemble the measuring tape
Utility sheers or kitchen scissors (don't use your good scissors!)
Fabric for the tape channels (I used a no-fray fabric like packcloth or spandex)
Sewing machine
Measuring tape or acrylic grid or marked table
Pins or clips

Hello Tim, I must say, you are so talented with NEW & INSPIRING IDEAS ❤❤❤
OHMYGAWWD!! MY JAW HAS DROPPED OPEN WIDE! OHMYGAWWD!! THIS IS A GAME CHANGER IN POUCHES! OHMYGAWWD! I MUST DO THIS!! WOW!! AMAZING! MY BRAIN HAS BUSTED WIDE OPEN WITH THIS! YOU CHANGED MY WAY OF MAKING POUCHES!
What?
WOW!! This would be an awesome “Christmas gift” wrapper!!!
I agree! I am not a huge fan of typical gift bags because they seem like last minute answers to wrapping a gift. But if you could give someone a gift AND make them a fun bag they can use later?!?
My brother took up sewing after he retired from carpentry work. His statement: "They are so similar. Measure twice, cut once." It's good to see men doing crafts, rather than just being crafty. 😉
OHMYGAWWD! THIS IS A GAMECHANGER!!! LOVE THIS!!! I GOT TO GET ME SOME PLACEMATS!!! DOLLAR STORE! HERE I COME!!!!
I just went ahead and pulled my tape measure out and cut it at 12 inch lengths!! Makes it really handy.
I love this channel so much. It's so real. It's not all flowery music and long fingernails. It relaxes me AND gives me good info. Thank you!!
Yeah, no long fingernails, no nonsense commentary. No grammar errors, just good instructions.
I really, really like these bags!! They are so cute and adorable. Plus they are easily put together. I also like how you made the corners of the bags, I've never seen it done like that before, but I like it better than having to sew the sides up then measure the corners then sew again. You cut our a sewing step. Thank you for sharing and God bless!
Also ment to tell you that you could use electrical tape on the ends of the measuring tape to cover the sharp edges
Im laughing at with your way of remaining calm.😊 love your video's
Oh my goodness, stop it! I've never seen the corners done this way, easy peasy!! This is a very easy to follow tutorial!! Thank you!
Lol. You’re welcome.
What a great way to re-purpose metal measuring tapes that have become bent in spots or no longer retract!
Thanks again for this great project!!! I am 84 years old, the 1st of the year, so I really do enjoy these quick useful ideas. I plan to make several to use as table top trash bags in my sewing room!! Keep us crafting!! Dee
I love this idea. I am thinking of a Christmas gift with this idea. Love it .
I love it ❤❤❤❤❤❤
LOL!!!! The measuring tape portion is hilarious! I love the idea of a grandkids project. I had an opportunity where the dinner DID in fact have tons of toy gifts, this would have been great for those. Thanks for these tutes! (Also watching 1.5 speed - Still directions very clear)
Ha ha. That was hilarious...a run a way tape measure!
I love when people remind me of funny stuff from videos. I had forgotten about that!
This is giving me ideas for a granddaughter that is turning 13 in January.
A bag for intimates?
You are so innovative and resourceful. I don’t have to buy all these specialty things to make your super awesome projects. Love your quilted bed comforter you utilized for placemats etc.! You’re in a league all your own. Doing cool things nobody else is doing!!
So glad I found your channel. Please keep the projects coming.
Thank you👍
THANK YOUXXXX
More videos from you, please. Love, love this project.
Love that!
What a clever project! This design has so many uses and placemat choices are endless. Thanks for the clear demo!
Using the tape measure is brilliant !!!
Awesome idea!
Timothy Totten,
I'm really grateful for these wonderful bags tutorial; I'm learning so much from you! Thank you Timothy and God bless 🙏
These would make lightweight purses if a shoulder strap added. As I get older, I want lightweight everything! Thank you for tutorial.
Nice job!
I have rewatched your video. Love this idea. Now with the Dollar Tree $1.25 tape measure that can make 25 bags/pouches.
POINTER!!! I did this for another project and used toe nail clippers to round the ends AND they didn't fly across the room the dipped the ends in hot glue so they weren't sharp lol Love your channel
We’ve made these in a similar way
to make small purses by adding handles!
And sometimes I’d add a magnetic snap or tie at the top to close it, instead of the tape measure snap closure, & they alway turned out cute!
I’ve also made boxy bag cosmetics or shaving bags with placemats!
Fun stuff!
Premade handles work great ...
wood or chain or faux leather ones, or even handles made from coordinated color wide grograin ribbon!
That’s an amazing purse i love the gold one
Absolutely beautiful and WOWZER! Love the bags and your wonderful detailed instructions. Cannot wait to make these for friends. THANK you SEW much ✂️
woowowowoowow sei bravissimo sei mio mitico
I made one of these more than ten years ago, and I still have it and love it.
Excellent!
I am Sooooooo happy that you did not edit out the escaping measuring tape.... !!
Lol! Me too. I keep my mistakes in so that people see I’m human too. We all make mistakes or have mishaps and that’s not the end of the world.
Love these!
Gonna head to my local dollar store tomorrow to see about getting a few place mats. Thank you Tim! ❤️❤️❤️👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks so much for the tutorial. I make small coin purses with the measuring tape, and I have made placemat bags. I never thought of doing both together! Thanks for that🥰
I had a similar project, I used 1-inch Venetian blinds strips.
This was great, I love this. Real life!!
Darling little bag. I must admit, I chuckled a little when the ruler unfolded and sprung away. 😹. Have a very merry Christmas and happy New Year.
You're a great Teacher. BEAUTIFUL
Love these
I love this project. Make it on a bigger scale and out of water proof material with a less rigid closure and you have a backpacking dry bag. Excellent!!!
Waaaw I love everything about your craftings project afterall I love to do crafting too but I am learning a lot from you too greetings from Europe Belgium 🇧🇪
Thank you for showing this to us. Wow.
Oh, you could use 1-1/2” grograin ribbon for the tape casing instead of cutting the fabric casing!
That’s a great idea! Makes it even easier!!
Carolynn Scoffield,
I think what you really meant was Grosgrain!
You sir are brilliant! Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic!! Beautifull. Thank you !! I do too!!
Excellent tutorial!
Well done Tim. They are awesome. Great gifts for any occasion.

This is brilliant!!!!
Thanks for such a neat idea!
Love this. Thanks for tutorial, you rock!
Awesome tutorial, thanks for the inspiration.
Very pretty,, looks so easy, thanks
Cute cute idea! Have to try this after the first of the year. Might just be my 2021 birthday gifts! Thank you Timothy! Love your videos!
First time watching one of your videos, enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work
That looks so easy !!!.. they look high end.. like you bought them at An expensive store.. tyfs
Oh wow. I have those placemats from TJMax. Glad I found your channel.
Hi really nice idea I enjoyed watching and thx for sharing .
Loved you are great
Très mignon!
I'm glad I found your channel. I bought 4 cloth placemats with beautiful design and fringe on all 4 sides. I think I'll just clip those off. They make nice cosmetic bags. Have you done any of them with lining and handles? Or, can you square the bottoms like regular bags are made? Thank you for response.
Thanks. Great! Now please a tote back with long straps!!
Seen this demonstrated before but black electric tape was put on the cut edge of the metal tape to keep it from cutting through the fabric and cut down on getting cut.
Great idea!
Put the black electrical tape on the ends of the tape measure BEFORE you cut them!! That way the metal doesn't go flying as bad!!
Makes so much sense! Thanks.
I’m just seeing your video and wondering if you wanted to make it smaller and add a strap how would you do that?❤
Your comment at the end about your shoes. Solution, buy a cheap table runner at dollar tree. Similar width but longer would make a shoe bag.
Great idea!
👍
You can also cover the sharp edges of the tape with electrical tape
Yes, I've seen that done. But 1) I find that trimming them with scissors blunts them and 2) I was too lazy to go find electrical tape. LOL
What sewing machine do you sew on , please ?
Can you use the slap bracelets?
Yes!
What sewing machine do you have
I use a Janome 1600p. But it’s a straight stitch machine for high speed volume sewing. It lists around $1,150 new. There are plenty of good machines that are cheaper and not designed for the kind of high-intensity and long-duration sewing my company does.
I love your videos! You are an excellent teacher:) but your fingers are so close to the needle- makes me nervous!! Lol
I certainly understand the concern. Still, I’ve been doing this for 30 years and have only punctured myself dozens of times lol.
Cover the ends in electrical tape
Could you put a strap on it?
Really nice 👌 😍💋 💝💖❤️
