  • Welcome Shiny, Crafty people! Tim Totten here with sewing projects you can do yourself!
This totally-easy gift bag has a cool snap-back closure and was made from one simple placemat and required NO CUTTING of the placemat! It uses a fantastic trick with a metal measuring tape to create the closure.
This is a great project to make a reusable gift bag and it's a fun, quick project to make with kids and grandkids!
To make this easy bag, you'll need the following:
1 standard placemat to match or coordinate with your decor
    Matching thread (if desired)
    One metal measuring tape
Screwdriver to disassemble the measuring tape
Utility sheers or kitchen scissors (don't use your good scissors!)
Fabric for the tape channels (I used a no-fray fabric like packcloth or spandex)
    Sewing machine
Measuring tape or acrylic grid or marked table
    Pins or clips
Like and subscribe to the channel for more great sewing projects you can do yourself!

I agree! I am not a huge fan of typical gift bags because they seem like last minute answers to wrapping a gift. But if you could give someone a gift AND make them a fun bag they can use later?!?

My brother took up sewing after he retired from carpentry work. His statement: "They are so similar. Measure twice, cut once." It's good to see men doing crafts, rather than just being crafty. 😉

I really, really like these bags!! They are so cute and adorable. Plus they are easily put together. I also like how you made the corners of the bags, I've never seen it done like that before, but I like it better than having to sew the sides up then measure the corners then sew again. You cut our a sewing step. Thank you for sharing and God bless!

We’ve made these in a similar way
to make small purses by adding handles!
And sometimes I’d add a magnetic snap or tie at the top to close it, instead of the tape measure snap closure, & they alway turned out cute!
I’ve also made boxy bag cosmetics or shaving bags with placemats!
    Fun stuff!

Put the black electrical tape on the ends of the tape measure BEFORE you cut them!! That way the metal doesn't go flying as bad!!

I use a Janome 1600p. But it’s a straight stitch machine for high speed volume sewing. It lists around $1,150 new. There are plenty of good machines that are cheaper and not designed for the kind of high-intensity and long-duration sewing my company does.
