How to Sew - Dollar Tree Lemon Placemats Tote Tutorial

- I found some Lemon Placemats at the Dollar Tree and thought this would make a sweet little tote. It is already lined.
This is another cheap, fast, and easy sewing project. I used 3 of the placemats to make this cute little 5 pocket tote. It only cost a little over $3.00 and takes about 30 minutes depending on your skill level.

Just found you. You're video is great, no idle chatter, no loud music, you spoke softly and not at break neck speed. Your directions are clear and to the point. Can't wait to see other projects.
Awesome! Thank you!
It’s now 2024 and I hope that Dollar Tree still has this type of placemats still in their store!!! Love the lemons but I could like other patterns, too!!😁. What a great bag and fun to make for gifts for friends!
I still see the lemon ones on occasion and sometimes sunflowers, butterflies, and something blue but I don't remember the pattern. I hope you give it a try.
Cute tote. I don’t see why I couldn’t put the pocket on the inside as well. 👍 Thanks for the video.
Absolutely! You sure can put a pocket on the inside! Thanks for watching!
Very clear and straightforward instructions! I'm off to the Dollar Tree. Thank you.
I am so excited that you are inspired to make one of your own!!!
Funny - I’m watching your tutorial while eating lunch. Lunch is served on three of the same lemon placemats. This is the last time they will be used as placemats. Thank You! 🦩
Oh that's too funny. You made my day!
I love the sound of sharp scissors cutting fabric. I have become a dollar tree regular these days!!. 😂
Me too!! Love sharp scissors and Dollar Tree!!!
So do I..😂
Hint: When back tacking on top stitching, on last back tack, stop somewhere in the middle of seam. This prevents weird rabbit ears hanging out at the finished edge. I find that it’s safer to clip very close to the seam itself and it’s invisible. I used to sew medical bags with loads of top stitching and taught myself to cut down the aggravation and time by ending a seam this way. I hope this isn’t offensive to anyone, just want to pass it on to all my sister seamers.
Great suggestion!!!
i do that too. Was taught old school because im old! One teacher called them eyelashes if hanging off the edge. Cutting close on edge can cut through the backtack. but cutting top and bottom of seam its still held by the back tack stitches.
Yes, I wondered why she started right before the strap instead of at the seam.
Thank you!
Great suggestion
I just saw these in my dollar tree! Fun idea! When the Christmas patterned table mats come out we can make reusable Christmas gift bags.
Awesome idea!
Love that idea!!
That’s a great idea 💡
You all prolly dont give a damn but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot the account password. I love any help you can offer me
@Aaron August Instablaster :)
I saw your video this morning and ran out to Dollar Tree, and now I have a new lunch bag! I love it. I used my Cricut and HTV and put my name on it. Thank you so much! 😀
Oh yeah!!! That's awesome!!! I love it!!!
I just love to watch sewing! Thank you for posting. This is a great idea for a quick gift or as a tote to bring home a fabric haul! Hahaha...
I am so happy that you enjoyed it!
Love the tote. You explain construction well, (you don't talk too fast), Thanks. Keep up the good work. Be Safe, and God Bless You.
Thank you for your sweet words!
First time watching one of your videos. Thank you for explaining it all so well! My mom tried to teach me some seeing when I was younger, but I didn't pay close attention. Now that she has passed I can't ask her those questions, but have her supplies. I'm trying to learn how to sew and videos like yours are helping me. Thanks for helping me to feel close to my mom and for helping me to take pride in what I can create with my hands. A tote like this would be perfect for carrying some of the water bottles and coffee thermoses I carry around in the car that like to roll around.
Megan, sometimes we take for granted what right there in front of us but I am so blessed to be able to help you feel close to her. Restoration. How precious that you have her supplies!
Definitely cute - thanks for sharing. Who'd think you could make a cute bag out of Dollar Tree placemats!
Thank you!!! I love Dollar Tree finds!
You’ve opened my eyes to a new way to save money on zippers… who would’ve thought 😊 well of course- you did ❤️ thanks for sharing!
Thank you!!! Y'all keep me on my toes!!
Beginners.. YEAH! I would love it.
Awesome!!!
Can't wait till Christmas Placemats come out!. Carolyn
That will be fun!
Sew pro!! So much is done for you already with lining and hemmimg. Love it❤
Makes it so fast and easy!!!
I love this. I made pillows out of the lemon placemats for my grand kids. Then I made valences for my kitchen. I have 3 placemats left! A win for me! Thank you
Awesome!!! Valances are a great idea, too!
I think even I could do that!!! You made it so easy to follow. Thank you. I'm going to be on the lookout for PLACEMATS!!!! :)
Happy hunting (for placemats)
Yes this is easy to do.🤗

Thank you for sharing. This video mine's me of what my mom used to do sewing. She's no longer here but I do have the skills so that is a plus. 🌼
Sweet memories!!! Its so cool that you learned from your momma
I love those placemats - bought eight last year when I first saw them and then they had some this spring too, so I bought a few extras. I think they look really high end actually, and what a fun idea to make a tote bag. Great design to the bag as well!
Thanks. I saw some again this year and was tempted to buy some more!!!

This was a Great Tutorial everything was clear to point. The fabric was eye catching. I've been sewing since 9 years old. I just love watching sewing tutorials in case it's something new out there.

Thanks and the "hunt" for the placemats is almost as much fun as making them!
I love this! Great tutorial too. Gives me confidence I can make one. Thanks so much.
You can do it!!! Go for it!!!
Thank you for sharing. I picked the placemats up last year. Look forward to trying your project and also doing thinking of using an old feed sack. Your instructions make it look easy for a beginner like me. Keep the projects coming
Oh cool!!! The feedsacks sound fun. You could also use the newer feed sacks like chicken feed... They are made from a plastic type material but it doesn't rip easy. Anyway, I am glad you are inspired. Thats my goal.
I just love it! I was just needing a summer pocket book! Just perfect to get back into sewing. I also have tapestry placemats from the Family dollar store, COULDN'T face using as placemats. What gorgeous material also to make totes or even "wine" totes.
I did buy the lemon place mats at the dollar store, plus two square potholders to make a cute apron with left over gross grain ribbon from blanket purchases as ties. Keep it up, I am a fan now!! My creativity is sparked. THANK YOU!!!
WOOHOO! I am so glad to be able to spark your creativity! That makes my day! You have some great ideas!
Love the bag I love lemons 🍋
Thank you!!!
Thank you for a fun project. That would be a nice one for young beginning sewers with some guidance. Also a great gift idea. Appreciate the details that you share that make a nicer, as well as easier outcome. I think you and my mother would have hit it off - she was quite the seamstress, too.
Terese,
Awww, thanks. I bet me and your mom would had many ideas and stories to share. When you are a seamstress you run into all kinds of challenges and successes! I am glad you think it would be a good gift idea,
Love this. And you're a great teacher.

I love the little lemon bag. Going to Dollar Tree right now to see what I can find. I made some of these many, many years ago but with just plain fabric. This looks even better. Thank you for your tutorial.

So sad ... both Dollar Tree stores near me didn’t have any polyester placemats. Looked online and they don’t have the cute lemon pattern that you show. So sad.
