- Hello Shiny Crafty People and welcome back to the channel! I'm Tim Totten and today we're transforming two Pioneer Woman placemats into a super easy and fun casserole carrier!
Have you ever gifted someone a pan of brownies or a lovely homemade casserole and wanted a better way to present it? Tired of losing your best casserole dish? This entire ensemble cost just $13 in materials and makes a great item you can either gift or not worry about getting back if they forget to return it!
Here's a breakdown of what I used to make this project:
2 Placemats (Pioneer Woman Patchwork from Walmart): $6.94 for two
1 13x9 Metal Pan with Lid (from Dollar General): $5.00
1 Strip of Hook & Loop Fastener (11" pieces): Less than $1.00
Matching thread
Sewing Machine
Scissors
I've made two more of these since recording this video and I was able to complete them in less than 10 minutes each!
What an easy way to coordinate with your own decor or to complement the decor of the person you're gifting to! Imagine seeing a special design on someone's gift registry and getting additional placemats to make gifts like this to go with it.
Thanks again for joining me and, until next time, stay crafty!

Timothy...I love how real you are!
You screw up just like we do and still create great stuff. 👍🏼
Great Idea
Very good idea !
I love how you take everyday inexpensive items to sew to make something else completely different.
Thanks!
One of my favorite sewing tools from the Dollar Tree is masking tape. It is great for holding things in place when I am stitching, and I can even sew over it and then remove it with no residue or tiny bits left under the stitching. It is quite easy to sew right next to the edge of the masking tape, pick it up and move it to the next section, especially for quilting straight lines.
I absolutely LOVE that you included your "mistakes". We ALL make them and they are what allow us to improve.
I love how simple you make projects for us. I also and so thankful to see your errors in process. While you were initially sewing this I was saying you were doing it wrong, (and I am a novice sewer). I giggled when you realized your error. So much like how I work when sewing things myself.
Yes. I thought how’s he going to get the dish in there..
Me too!
Thanks for being real!!! Everyone makes mistakes and this helps us relax and just have fun with crafting.
very enjoyable
Great idea!
Great video! I actually paused it several times to order 2 sets of PW placemats. My best friend loves her PW kitchenware so I plan on making this for her birthday! She is very supportive of my sewing so I know she will absolutely love this! Thank you for taking the time to give us this video!
Tim, what a superb video. We (newbies) NEED to see all the mistakes in there as well as the tips and tricks. Love it.
I love that you show your mistakes! Make me feel more confident! Thank you
Gee whiz…you’re so good at all of this! Thanks Tim!
Another great gift idea, Tim. Thank you.
This is a great idea, I hate doing bindings and the purchased placemats takes care of that issue. There are so many beautiful placemats on the market today. Quick and Easy Gift Idea! Depending on the size of the placemats it might work as a laptop carrier also.
Ooh, that's a great idea! I see another video bubbling up LOL
@@timothytotten9409 yes please
Boxed corners can be sewn on the right side, folded over and held with a button. Then add buttons to the top flap where the sides are folded in for the style design, or rather, as decoration to match the other end, even if Velcro or another closure is used. I don’t trim away the triangle when I make boxed corners, because the triangles add support to the bag.
Love this idea. I think you could also use a hair tie and a button as a closure too. Great job!
I really appreciate you letting us see the learning. Love this project ❤😊
I really like this idea Tim. Thank you. Now I have to find some pretty place mats.
Good idea. Enjoyed the humor. Liked being part of your design process...mistakes and all.😎
Enjoyed this "real life" tutorial with mistakes and all! Thank you!
Awesome
I love that you show your mistakes. I make them to! This way you show how to "fix it". Thank you for your videos I love your sewing!!!!
Think I'll try one with a button and elastic loop closure - Thanks for the tutorial!
I like this…including the mistakes…which we all do, makes me feel more inspired to make stuff😂
my eyeballs almost popped out of my head when you ripped that seam apart😳!!!!!!thought I was gana pass out for a minute there!!!!!💙
This project is simple to do, looks great, and is very cost cost effective!!! I love it!!! Thank you so much. Have a blessed day.
I have had a couple of horrible weeks and you just made me really laugh after the shock wore off. You said Well hello shiny crafty people" but what I heard at first was Well hello shiny crappy people" and I wondered why and what happened to your week and then it hit me what you really said and I had to pause your video until I could stop laughing. Thank you so much for brightening my evening with a great laughing time I needed🙃
That’s so funny! I always have to enunciate even for myself! Lol
Thank you for sharing, I will be making some of these, I also liked you video on making place mats for the store bought quilt
I like the velcro
Clear as mud
Such a great idea! And, I love your 'magic trick!'
OMG when you RiPPeD those sides apart, I literally screamed! Then I realized that it was place mats, and probably wouldn’t come apart. W H E W !!
Lol. I get way too impatient sometimes!
A great gift idea. Make brownies in the pan and place in the holder and give it all as one gift💙
If someone gave me brownies this way, I would cry tears of joy. I am a sucker for free brownies!
And you forgot the best part: It's washable! Depending on the fabric, of course, but most are washable in my experience. Thanks for a great and extremely useful idea, Tim.
Just found your channel! Love that you left the bloopers in, because we've all made those mistakes. New subbie!
I have used these placemats to make bags. Cannot wait to make a carrier! Thank you! SEW awesome!
Wonderful tutorial! Love that you show your mistakes.
Fantastic! I've got a party to go and this is going to be a great hostess gift! Many thanks for this superb idea. And I definitely want to use the hook and loop. It just looks amazing.
Great idea, I would for sure make a topside carry strap like a suitcase type strap
What a good idea!
Ha Ha I just love your videos - we are only human - perfect video I love it and I do have a wedding shower to attend...
Great idea! This reminds me of the Duvet cover I recently made, only much smaller. I'm going to try to take your idea but try the over flap of the Duvet for a way to close the carrier. I'm also going to add straps for carrying. I'll see if that works.
Pls let us know if it works! 😊
Thank you for your shareing the knowledge of sewing love this pot luck cover to keep it warm or cold and easy to transport God Bless love love love yourtable and machine
I like you. You’re like my next door, easily like you and you’re very thoughtful to show your mistakes because I learn better that way.
I'm a newbie to your channel and your hack on turning out those handles are genius! I make baby suspenders and turning those straps are the worst! Thank you for a great video! I can't wait to go binge on your previous ones!😉
OMGOSH!! I just bought 2 dish dryer mats!! I’m going to try this pattern using them!!! Wish me luck!!!

You are so freaking adorable! Thanks for all of the tips along the way and for being so real! Love it!
Very nice casserole cover. Thank you
I agree….brownies are needed.
Lol
oh yes I need this for my chirstmas gift makes
I did enjoy. What I was thinking to was to make wide strips and attach to the backside to carry it with when ready to take out dish you would just slide them off the ends would work really well. I like the idea of what you did so many things you could add to it. Even some lace sewn in would be very rustic and cute. Good video I subscribed. I’ll chk out the rest of your vids. Sys
Love the casserole holder. So pretty the placemats are.
I love your projects but goodness you sew so fast!
I have a fast machine and I’m in a hurry! Lol
I love how you make the baking dish cover. How would you make handles to make it easier to carry. I would like handles on it.
Another great idea Tim & as always, so easy to follow. I am headed out to get placemats. Thank you for sharing.
This would make a great iPad cover also
Great tutorial! Like the ribbon turning trick too!
And webbing could be added to the side seams to make handles to carry it with! Nice easy project. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Good idea!
Love this easy "Shower Gift" idea for, Now I need a round one for my large round Potato Salad bowl!!!
Flipping the belt with a piece of ribbon is brilliant.
I like the envelope style. You could use it as a hot pad when you get to the pot luck. Thank you for the tutorial.
That’s such a good point!!
I was just thinking the same thing! Double duty!
Lol I'm glad to see that you are as normal as
Lol my phone did that
Awesome tip on the ribbon.
Really nice and practical! Thanks
Wow love that…..😊
You’re so clever. I’d have never looked at placemats and seen such a cool casserole keeper! Love your videos
Your a genius! Love this kind of stuff! Thank you, thank you!
Love the video ‼️,easy&cute 💕
Lol good to see you make mistakes and correct it. I like the idea.
Carry handles would be nice to add. Thanks for the tutorial
Oh I love your channel. Tyfs n explaining so many things, as it sure helped me. Your creation is great.
Great idea for a quick hostess gift. Thanks!!
Really good idea! Like it a lot.
What a great idea ! 😃I'm definitely going to try this one. It's might also be adaptable to other sizes. How cool would it be to buy someone a beautiful casserole dish & lid then make make the carrier. However, when you bring it over have some food in the dish. Could be brownies , a casserole or a crumble. Almost anything would work. I think it'd be a really nice gift for newlyweds or a new home. I've always thought it'd be nice to buy some of those beautiful placements & sew them together like you did in the 1st step to make a runner for your table or as a gift. Anyway, first time on your site & a great experience. 👍 kj from Florida 😊
Love the video. Awesome you left the mistakes in the video and showed how to correct the mistake. I'm not a beginner but there are some out there that would not have known what to do. Love the casserole carrier will be making these for sure.
Love the simplicity!
The placemats would make a table runner
Another way for closure would be to make a couple of button holes a few inches apart in the top flap and sewing the ribbon on the bottom portion. Bring them through the holes and making a pretty bow tie.
Love this
Glad I found your channel ! Such a cute idea !
I like this idea.. I like seeing errors too, they help with learning:) ..Going to make nice Christmas gifts too
I love your video including the "design remix". lol nice job. Making some for Christmas gifts. Thank you.
You are so funny sometimes I like to see you are good at your Saw thank you and Happy New Year's.
Save selvages that you've cut off in long strips instead of ribbon to turn the ties.
This is a great ideas for a house warming gift!
Love the idea with the straps
Just found this channel- love that you included mistakes.
I love it, going to make it, thank you
Love this ! Thank you!
You could do both the Velcro & the bow tie for making it pretty.
love how you inset your sewing machine into the table. Can you show us how you did it?
This is lovely! A beautiful way to make a deep sheet pan carrier. Do you have a video as to how to make a round casserole carrier?
This is an awesome gift idea. I really think it’s great that you leave in all the mistakes or errors or oops! It just shows that you are the professional to me! I really enjoy watching your channel!! 🤗🥳
ThNks
Love it
I would place handles in the side seams, so this carrier could be carried level so as not to spill anything ! I have another design carrier that is complicated , it is great, harder to make. This video was great. 😍
This is what I thought was missing and wished he had included handles, but your idea was perfect! Thank you.
I wondered how you were going to put that in side it great job
If your threader is not working, it’s an indication that your needle is not placed all the way up before screwing it on.
