I remember everyone talking to Anne Hathaway about her weight loss for the role of Fantine. She said right off the bat that she's not telling anyone how she dropped so much weight because it wasn't healthy and teenagers were going to hear about it and try it. I got fired in the 70’s. I was an agency nurse called in to work at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. The hospital was run by the army and the ‘patients’ were veterans of WW1 and told me stories about donkeys pulling the guns over the rise etc. To me, as a carefree kiwi girl in her twenties who loved these men, I was appalled at the conditions they had to live in. They were so constrained by military authority, even in hospital. I decided to throw them a party having found an old gramophone in a storage cupboard. I bought them morning tea, played roll me over in the clover on the gramophone and we danced and laughed together until we fell to the floor….literally. Best day ever for me but we got caught and I was sacked. However, due to staff shortages I got to work a few more days and my boys clubbed together to buy me a bottle of Chloé perfume to say goodbye. I’m in my seventies now and remembering that moment brings tears to my eyes. I am proud that I lost that job in my attempt to give some joy and happiness to those lovely men who taught me so much about life.

Worked at McDonald's, my manager explained the whole food thing. Basically if it gets thrown away, then the company can mark it as waste and they get money back for it. If it's eaten or donated the company doesn't get money. So my manager would gently stack all the leftovers in a brand new bag and take it to her car that was parked right next to the dumpster to hand out to homeless people after work. Loved her, I sometimes miss working for her.

    • @burakkurose
      @burakkurose Před 4 měsíci +33

I was going to explain this until I saw your comment. Also once it is marked as waste most managers (if they are a good one) will totally let their employees grab some leftovers and eat. McDonald's was my first job decades ago, I don't know how much it has changed since then but when I was there all employees also received an Employee Meal, especially minors because it used to be covered by the labour laws.

Darden (olive garden, red lobster, etc) has a policy that no mistakes or untouched send backs can be eaten, just thrown away, the biggest reason according to them is that if we were allowed to eat it we would PURPOSEFULLY ring in incorrect orders. Nevermind the fact that they already monitored EVERYTHING about our tickets in real time for things such as the soup and salad scam, and could very easily notice if we were consistently ringing in incorrect food, AND as severs our job is dependent upon tips and it would hurt our bottom line so much to have food take twice as long and/or come out incorrect.
So it makes sense that they could get money back for it, they just preferred to blame US, the minimum wage (debt minimum wage which is like $3 less than minimum) employees instead of looking like the awful greedy fuckers they are.

The tanning turd story I have 2 things. 1. My mom owned a tanning salon until 2015. She was really funny about clean bathrooms and our bathrooms were SPOTLESS. She would go clean it herself or sometimes ask an employee every time she heard the toilet flush. And her office shared a wall with the bathroom so she was good at catching every single time. My point is that the bathroom was always spotless and smelled lovely so there was NO REASON for anyone to not use it. There was a lady who always insisted to be in the same room and it was my job to clean the rooms and beds once used. Part of that was changing the little trash can with EVERY use. This women began taking a pee in the trash can EVERY SINGLE TIME. My mom asked if she could speak with the customer privately and asked if the customer would like a bed closer to the bathroom because she knew she’d been peeing in the trash can. The woman is adamant that she not use a different bed and that she was NOT peeing in the trash can. So the next time she came in, my mom had me take the trash can out of the room. The woman tanned and left and when I went to clean the room she had peed were the trash can had been! The next time the woman came in my mom told her right in the store that she knew this woman had peed on the floor and that was unacceptable behavior. She told her she wouldn’t allow her to tan unless she used the bathroom in the ACTUAL bathroom. The woman went and locked herself in the tanning bed room she liked and screamed for my mom to turn the bed on. My mom refused and called our cousin (a local on duty officer) to help diffuse the situation without getting her in trouble. The officer talked her out of the room and checked for pee. She had not peed this time and that made my mom look like a jerk. The woman said she didn’t even want to tan anymore after “being treated that way” and asked if she could use the bathroom before she left. My mom was like of course and the woman made a frickin beeline for the bathroom like she had always used it. Once she leaves the bathroom, this woman SPRINTED out of the store and screeched tires peeling out of the parking lot. The officer ran outside and my mom and I ran to the bathroom. The woman had not only pissed on the floor and toilet LID, but she had poured the soap from the dispenser all over, emptied the paper towels and ALL THE toilet paper all over the pee and soap. My mom didn’t press charges but the woman was finally banned from coming back.
    2. I used to work at donut place in which America may or may not jog on. It was summer and I dont do much in summer I hate heat. I had no problem working anybody’s shifts. Eventually it got to the point where I had worked for a month straight with no days off (short days only 6 hours max sometimes only 2-3). I was pretty tired and insisted for the one day off I was given the next week. The night before my manager is pleading with me to come in for a mid shift (very short you clean the store and bathroom and 1-2 other things and it usually only times 2-3 hours). I insist the need for a day off and she apologizes but continues that she really needs my help she’ll give me a guaranteed 2 consecutive days off at the start of the new schedule. So I cave and come in. After I had cleaned everything and done all my tasks, I was about to clock out. Before I could, a man came in and walked into the sitting area. You have to walk by the bathroom to get there. She didn’t say anything, the store was empty except for him and he stared out the window which made his back face us at the counter. We call out hello and welcome and he doesn’t move. We ask if he’s okay, he doesn’t move. Suddenly the back of his khaki pants start to get wet and lumpy, it goes down his legs to the floor and we can see he actively having diarrhea or something in his pants right now. None of us know what to say or do. My manager goes to look in the parking lot to see if maybe he has a caregiver who was just taking a while. The lot was empty, he was alone. After a few minutes he finally turns from the window and walks up to the counter while poo slides out of his pant legs and leaves a long trail from the window. He orders a single powdered donut and his voice is clear, and he’s making INTENSE eye contact. My coworker gives him a donut and insists it on the house to avoid a poo wallet. He then walks back to the window and SITS at the table next to his original puddle. Takes about 5 minutes to nibble his donut. My manager had called to police to come help him as we were certain he was just a confused or incapacitated man that had wondered away from a caregiver. The police pulled up as he’s finishing his donut, he realizes they’re coming in and he got up and sprinted out the other door and across the street. He had left an ungodly amount of poo everywhere all over the room I had just cleaned. We closed the shop for cleaning because biohazard. It was the worst smell and they give me the cleaning supplies like it was my job. I told my manager I wasn’t gonna do that and that in fact I will be taking those 2 days off starting now instead.

The wife of a coworker of mine used to work at a Burger King and she said the reason why employees are not allowed to eat or give away the leftover is because of liability issues in case of any food poisoning due to the product. Apparently there's a difference between paying for your own food poisoning and getting it for free at least when it comes to court litigation.

I spotted him leaving the fitting room as I clocked back in and went to see what he was doing in there and was greeted by a fitting room stall covered in all kinds of male gross-ness 🤢 (IYKYK!) the manager expected me to clean it up myself (with no protective equipment!) and bag the plaything and the book and write up a report about what happened. I was like HELL NO! That is a bio hazard ma’am and he got in there under your watch! She tried to fire me but I went hard through corporate and ended up getting offered a superviser role and she got fired (turns out she was also stealing from the safe to pay for her drinking habit!) but I left anyway because I was sick of the job and got offered another job for double the money! There are reason why coporate prefer trashing than letting the employes get it. To have seen it, the first one is because some employee will on purpose have "accident" with package (cutter going overboard and opening cookies boxes) or overdoing it (doing too much big mac) to have something to snack/get that are unsellable now. But, it's kind of also sending the message to the employes that they can't be trust (sometime, it's true!!!). Maybe just the need to go through a manager to get something could do the job? If coporate can't trust their manager, they are in very very big trouble!

I went to an interview during my lunch break once. The funny thing is I didn’t keep it a secret at all. I was being bullied by the women in the cubicle next to me and the job itself was extremely emotionally draining. Before I went to the interview I told the team lead I might be a few minutes late getting back because I was going to an interview. The next day I was called into a meeting with the head boss of my department. In a very serious tone he informs me he knows I went to an interview. I’m just like well of course you know I’m the one who told you. Long story short they were desperate to not have another employee walk out because of my bully that I was given a new cubicle next to the window. The bullying greatly reduced after this. I still don’t understand why they didn’t fire her but instead bent over backwards to keep anyone else from leaving. Would have saved them a lot of headache if they just fired her.

It all depends on why they say you're fired or why you quit. If there's ON PAPER a legitimate reason to be fired, then you're not entitled in the governments eyes to the unemployment. If you have a legitimate enough reason to quit, like in the tanning salon situation, like lowered income because you couldn't do the things that earn your money and poor treatment, then you are entitled to the unemployment. And each state has their own policies too.

The tanning bed poo story has reminded me of my poo story.
I was working in a used bookstore at the time and we only had two bathrooms in our store, both unisex, so only two toilets to choose from, both in the back of the store. I had a preference of which one I liked to use as well, because I felt it was the least used, but unfortunately someone was in there at the time, so I had to use the other one, and I honestly feel this incident just made me hate this bathroom more.
I believe I had just come back from my break and stopped to use the rest room before heading to the front for the rest of my shift, because it was convenient and as all minimum wage employees either know or learn very quick, you only do your bathroom business on company time. Anyways, the moment I opened the door to the bathroom, I could already see it. All over the toilet. It was like a poo explosion. It was up the back of the toilet on the tank, all over the bowl and seat. It was even between the hinges of the toilet where the seat connects to the bowl. It was not only horrifically disgusting, but baffling! I still don't understand how you can poo with such force that it goes up the back of the tank! And then to leave it like that for the employees to clean! It was horrible!
We were a small store too, so we didn't have a maintenance crew or anything, all employees were responsible for cleaning things like that up and it was basically like, if you found it, you clean it. I absolutely couldn't do it though, I knew I would vomit if I tried. So, I had to go find one of my managers, and of course I picked the manager I felt most comfortable with to ensure I wouldn't have to clean it. So, I told him what happened and that I couldn't deal with it unless he wanted vomit on top of the mess. (Not to mention, if I puked, I probably would've gone home sick...)
He, thankfully, didn't fight me on it or insist that I had to do it or anything and instead he just sighed, stopped what he was working on and went to clean it for me. And I swear, he was in there for like an hour. He even had to mop the floor, it was that bad...
I thanked him profusely of course and bought him a snack to show my appreciation, but the thing that always makes me laugh when I think back on this is him telling me later, in a mildly frustrated tone as he complained about his day, that he had to "floss a toilet today"!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I felt so bad but I couldn't help laughing when he told me!! And I still can't help laughing! The imagery of flossing a toilet gets me every time! XD
To top it all off, we're now dating and have been for 2 years, so no wonder he went and cleaned it for me without a fight, right? XD

Not my first ever job but my first job when i started university i worked at "the bear factory" (like build a bear) - started around the end of september with a friend from the same dorm... we were asked if we have any time we need off and we both said we wont be around for xmas as we will be going back home (in the uk, if you make a company aware you already have time off commitments from before they employ you then they are supposed to legally honour them -- something else i learnt after this)... winter break is just around the corner and our manager is sent to the main store in the centre of london and we get a new manager, it's already getting busy, we asked when we will be getting xmas temp staff as they'll need training - we were told she (the new manager) is sorting it and our schedule will be up soon... following week we see the schedule - i'm down for the first week and my friend is down for the second week... we confront the manager and were told she can't have us both off at the same time as she doesnt have enough temp staff... complained to higher managerment who came back and said they spoke to the original manager and she said she never agreed it.
Following day I quit and put in a complaint. A week later my friend quit. Few days after that another person quit.
The manager was left extremely short staffed... she lost her supervisor and another employee just after xmas... only one person who was employed around the same time as me remained - turned out the manager was fired because they have never had so many people leave in such a short time.

As far as the McDonald's story, I think the reason most fast food places throw it away is because then what happens is the staff over-makes food and "accidentally" creates more waste just so they can take it at the end of the night.
I'm not sure about other countries, but McDonald's Canada allows all staff a 50% off discount off their meal, so that's pretty good.

I live in a small town, so there was hardly ever any left over food because the margins are a lot tighter at a smaller store. Also less staff, so if there's a leftover anything and then it's gone, it will be noticed.
I remember back in the day we were allowed to take home muffins that were leftover at the end of the night. Then people were baking soooo many. The moment they decided the staff wasn't allowed to take waste home, they stopped baking so much. Because it was just more work for food they weren't allowed to take home.
It's just a fact that if people are allowed to eat leftover stuff, they will create more waste and pretend it was an accident.

Considering the hour, not many people came through and all the food was bagged up and "thrown out"...the window into our cars as we drove home. Yes, he made sure that those of us who worked the night shift were sent home with ample food, the company still marked it as "waste". One of my husband's employees at a pizza joint decided he needed some extra money so he showed up early one day for work intending to rob the safe. He pulled up around back in his own car, tried to cover his face with a black sock that was too small to fit over his head so he cut it to make it fit, but quickly realized he couldn't see through the sock to punch the code in to open the back door, so he used a plastic bag instead. When he finally fumbled his way into the store and punched in the code to open the safe (which was a time delayed safe, of course) he had some time on his hands and used that time to try to change the camera angles, as if they hadn't been recording him the entire time, but was too short to reach them. Anyway, when the safe finally opened and he pulled the money out, my husband walked in the front door to open the store for the day, and was met by a guy with a plastic bag over his head and a hand full of cash. Before he could even say or do anything, the guy got scared and decided to abort mission, pulling the bag off his head, tossing the cash to my husband, and yelling "I WAS JUST KIDDING... SURPRISE!" before leaving out the back door and driving away. Yeah, no. He got fired and arrested when he showed back up for his shift at 11am. He really thought saying he was "just kidding" was good enough.

Finding poop or pee all over the floor and clothing in the stall was not uncommon because apparently a stall equals a bathroom even if it doesn't have a toilet. I never had to clean it though because cooperate had set rules saying only the cleaning staff or managers were allowed to do that due to health and safety concerns ( Plus you now have to have training on how to clean that stuff correctly and the company was not gonna pay for everyone to know how to do that).
I am surprised that the cooperate of the tanning salon didn't have the same concerns about having a 14 year old touch bodily waste. Had I been a parent and found out my 14 year old child had been made to do that, job or not I would have been kicking up a fuss. Good thing Charlotte had enough disgust and sense at that age to refuse to do it.

We cleaned it up whine trying not to gag and looked at the security cameras saw who did it and they are now banned from our store for life. People are so disgusting I don’t understand the mentality of some people. Definitely the worst day of my life at work.

Back when I was 20 I worked as a lot attendant for a small town car dealership. I didn’t quite fit in with the mechanics around me because I was younger and I had long hair. So I kept to my self, showed up on time and worked hard. I was actually very proud of work ethic. One day a new guy showed up. They had me train him, then they called me in and fired me. They said that when I washed a couple of cars I had missed a few spots. So that was it. I had never been talked to about that or anything else for that matter. I thought I was the model worker and I was devastated because I had never been fired from anything. I later realized that it was most likely the fact that I simply didn’t fit in. I ate by myself. I worked alone. I didn’t gawk at the playboy calendar they had up in the shop. I didn’t dawdle in conversation. I was told they had gone through about 7 attendants in the last year. I can relate to the woman in the first story. I worked at a special needs facility where I worked with children with developmental disabilities. I loved working with the kids and teaching them the necessary survival skills to help them overcome their difficulties. However, the owners had a very bad work habit and the environment was toxic. They did not help us at all. All they would do is sit in their offices with their doors open just so they can listen in on what we said and they’d only come out to us to tell us whenever something was out of place. It was as if they couldn’t do it themselves. Also, it didn’t help that I was the only male employee working with about 20 women. In this day in age, that’s a very uncomfortable situation.
I got called into the office a few times because I behaved differently and sometimes I did things that they didn’t like, even thought it wasn’t my intention. The final straw was when I got assaulted by a student and when I reported the incident, the managers and owners did nothing. They told me if I didn’t like it there, then leave. I walked out and haven’t looked back since. I’m in a much better job now and I don’t have to worry about a lousy boss anymore.

Throughout my "career" there it was the norm to keep extra cookies and pastries that couldn't fit into a package and that we couldn't sell any other way and eat them as like snacks. We would hide from the cameras and this was in the policies not to do, but it was the culture. The managers and senior people in the department like encouraged it and for younger employees, we didn't know any better.
So sometimes last year, we all got called out for it and got interviewed by loss prevention as if what we were doing for YEARS was stealing when it was just going to get thrown out. I was suspended but a couple got fired over it.
Now they try to cover it with taking on Too Good to Go which is a way we sell stuff we would throw out, but if those don't sell we still end up throwing it out 🤣 it makes no sense and I wish we could donate it

I also assumed they would see the sales figures reflected in my managers sales. No. I was too polite and naive and trusting. I still, over 20 years later refuse to shop with that company after the way I was treated by not only the managers, but head office.

The McDonald's I was at wouldn't let staff take unordered food because
    a) the food is past the sell by time so "isn't safe". Nevermind "staff" (managers) often reset the timers during rushes sometimes multiple times.
    b) they state allowing that makes staff intentionally make too much food so they can take it home after work.

When I was 15 I used to work at a grocery store, at the deli section. We were throwing out cheese, salami and salads daily. They were taken and stored in a fridge in the back to be taken and incinerated later. I asked why this was happening and if the employees could take some of that perfectly good food (we had to get rid of the food on its last day of expiration) and the answer was also no. The reason is purely bureaucratic - it's not food they can vouch for 100% and if anyone happens to get sick, they don't want to be liable for that. Other than that, there was nothing wrong with the food.

One reason fast food places like McDonalds, KFC etc don'tallow staff to have the "leftovers" at the end of the shift is because it does actually cot down on waste. A local KFC branch banned staff from taking home the leftover chicken at the end of the night (mainly due to the food safety aspect) and they discovered that there was less food being left over. It was either being deliberately or subconsciously being oversupplied so staff could take it home etc. When they brought in the new rule, the kitchen stopped cooking/preparing so much and less waste, less in the dumpster etc etc.
