My PC is 8 years old (i7-4930k). The only thing I've done is upgrade the RAM to 32GB, Installed an SSD and a 1080ti. It runs all games at max or high detail settings. You can upgrade it by adding RAM and Adding SSD and maybe buying a GPU for it. But if youre gonna replace the CPU and motherboard its a bit expensive. If youre gonna total all of this cost or even at least the first three then its much better to just save up and build a new one

@@crystalparrot4985 8 GBs of ram is simply not enough for current games. 16 GB of ram is standard nowadays. unless you are talking VRAM in your GPU. then still 8 GBs is low for games coming out now currently. 12-16GB of VRAM is what a person buying a new GPU would aim for to have high frame rates at high graphic settings. a prebuilt PC isnt terrible especially for people who are nervous about spending a lot of money and not knowing a lot about how to actually put it together. some prebuilt PCs dont build with the idea that the consumer will want to upgrade their PC down the line. this means enough room in the case to change a part for something else and compatability on parts.

I am a PC enthusiast and a photographer and the same applies to both hobbies. Don't upgrade unless your current gear stops working or is not getting the job done. I recently upgraded to a Dell T5610 workstation with a GTX 1070 because the old system was not doing what I needed it to since I got into video editing. A local animation studio was selling off a bunch of workstations at the same time too so it all worked out. But it was never about bragging rights. Although dual Xeons with 128 GBs of RAM is nice. :)

I realise this video is at least a couple of years old, but the message remains. The model numbers and specs change, but the story and advice are constant.
It reminds me of the Horsepower Wars of the 60s and 70s. Cars have always triggered competitiveness in their owners, but those decades, I think, peaked out the rivalries, with FORU divisions at GM (two of which have disappeared since) fought Ford, Chrysler, and American Motors and one another for bragging rights at drag strips - and public thouroughfares - all oveer North America.
To a degree, designing extra performance in products benefits customers as well as the sales of the manufacturers, but, as you pointed out, advances are sometimes miniscule and even negatively effective.

The first PC i built for myself (with a few good friends’ help) is a Ryzen 1700x, Asus ROG STRIX board, Corsair Vengeance 2666 ram (16gb), EVGA 1080 FTW2, Corsair H100i 240mm liquid cooler, Corsair 850w gold rated psu, inside a Corsair Obsidian 570x case. At the time, 5ish years ago, this was a pretty big boy system that mercilessly and efficiently donkey-punched anything that came its way. Its starting to show its age now, though. Currently in the component-ordering phase of my second build, which will be a Ryzen 5800x, 3080 10gb, Asus board, and much more ram and storage. The better a computer's performance, the less limitations you will find. My advice; When you decide to upgrade, Buy the best you can afford. Decide of how much you can spend. Then put the most money into the places where you need strength, but not so much that you compromise building a well-balanced computer. You make your decisions, then you live with them.

I wasnt happy with my computer a couple years ago. I had a I5 with a gtx 970. It wasnt fast enough but played games fine, I upgraded everything but the GPU and I was happy as hell with my computer. I saw no reason for the 1000s cards as it stlll wouldnt let me play at 4k like I wanted, even the 2000 cards wouldnt unless I was going 2080 TI and if I have a 970, I think its fair to judge what I think of that kind of money for a GPU. Now I figure I can get 4 or 5 years out the 3080 and thats an acceptable value to me, so if its ever for sale I'll buy one. Edit: my uncle has a pentium 4 541 pc, asked me to upgrade it. Found out it can't even run youtube properly, so i just placed a core 2 quad in there and now its waay better.
Tldr: upgrade it to a quad, or duo at the very least

Great topic, Jay! I built a second PC for my kids to play on, and I just slapped a GTX 670 I had on hand in there thinking "I'll replace this asap," but actually found that an old ass 2gb GPU was flexing on the titles we play. I didn't even feel bad selling my more powerful machine, knowing I can effectively game on $250.

I built my first computer earlier this year having no clue what I was doing. I bought what I could afford that was in stock and I'm proud of what I was able to put together not because I have the most high end gamer rig money can buy but because I jumped into the deep end of a knowledge base I was not comfortable with and learned how to do something new. I was able to take that knowledge and do a fresh install on an old Dell pc I used in my workshop for cnc projects that I had forgotten the password for and had for 2 years been a pile of e waste in the garage and is now back to running. If my new rig ever can't run what I need it to run I can upgrade it but I'm happy with what I have

I'm still on a 3770 non k with a GTX1080, 16gb DDR3 and 3 128gb SSD's in Raid-0. Honestly, for the games I play its fine but I'm starting to notice weird and random PC issues and I think its because of aging hardware. So I have a Ryzen 5800X sitting on my desk right now waiting for the rest of my parts to arrive. It is time.

I upgraded my computer when stuff starts to crash out, I get about 5 years on an OEM computer which I feel like is a decent lifespan, this week I ordered parts to build my own computer in hopes of being able to replace parts as they quit and upgrade cheaper parts of time to help with software compatibility problems Like the latest one with windows 10 to 11. But my computer quit working altogether so it's not a problem anymore.
