  • In this video I tackle the rear main seal on this 400M, as well as the oil pan gasket and transmission output seal but not without a little bit of push-back from the ol Ford F100. This one about kicked my butt..

Congrats on your willingness to tackle all these jobs on the '78. I'm watching and wondering why when you take some things on that you don't fix the logital related parts. You replaced the rear transmission seal, didn't mention if you checked the rear transmission bearing since the seal had already been changed in the past. It would have been so easy to check and replace when you had the driveshaft out. Also, did you check the u-joints? The driveshaft was out and would have been easy to do at that time. I mention these things because I've done this road many times over the past 50 years! Maybe you did these things and just didn't video it. Anyway, I really appreciate watching your videos, especially since I used to drive a '79 F150 with a 351W.

Good point on the transmission bearing, to be honest it didn't even cross my mind. I've just been focused on sealing up leaks really. U-joints are in good shape actually! I think this truck has been gone through before some 20 years ago.
      Thank you for watching!!

Answering your first question, I think it would be pretty sweet with like an inch or 2 bigger on the tires but the ride quality will probably be best with the stock size. The speedometer will be a little off the bigger you go and you have to change speedometer drive gears to fix that if you want to do so, so keep that in mind. My first truck I went from 16s to 17s and it read 50 at 55 and 63 at 70. Also, they stopped using rope rear main seals from the factory in 1971.

Ideally that's not a good idea to go tall of a tires the reason being is you put more stress on your rear end gear set just a 1" bigger tire it is 4.4% more load the one thing you don't want to do is get carried away with over size tire just like with the bigger the rim is the more rotating mass it has on your braking forces if you know what I'm talking about people who constantly have to change their front rotors and wheel bearings all the time sometimes even the rear rotors, axle bearings because they put rims on that are so big that start looking stupid.

Next time drain the coolant and remove the upper & lower radiator hose and you can get the motor up a lot more and that would have given you more clearance to get the oil pan out a lot easier, now as for you tries get set of 235 or 255/70-15 it tab small or taller I would have recommended 245/70-15 but they're no longer being made, as for bigger rims 235/70-16 or 245/60-17 the rim width will vary with tread width from 7" to 8" wide rims and get set of LT tire that are 6 ply or Load Range D, E or XL not passenger tires Please note the tires so I just I picked her to match your existing tire size that were your odometer is not too far off, the internet wrong you don't need to clock oil seal also that's not where you put the sealer at and I would It should have been applied to the back of the main cap and I would have change out all the Main and Rod Bearings now instead of later what looks like a little wear is a lot of wear crossed all of them also I would install a new high volume of pump.

Hopefully there won't be a next time on the lower end gaskets haha
I'll take a look at those tires, thanks for the info!

Nice work! That oil pump looked like a chore. Maybe somebody like LMC truck or similar has a new fan shroud for that?
