Onewheel vs LaCroix vs Evolve

  • A hands on review/comparison between these three boards. I do highlight the Onewheel and LaCroix more than the Evolve here. Also, rather than focusing on specs and I talk more about what it’s actually like to ride these different boards and what the pros and cons can be. I hope you find it informative and helpful. Thanks for watching and enjoy!

      Sean C. Thanks so much. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, both are amazing boards and very different from one another. I hadn’t really seen any reviews comparing these boards and so I thought it would be nice to do something different. Plus it’s something I would’ve appreciated seeing if I were contemplating buying one of these or picking up a second board. Reading about specs is helpful of course, but getting insight on what the actual ride experience is more valuable in my opinion. Thanks for watching.

    Sir, We shall start by talking about your cinematography. Completely on point, every shot moves with you or around you so as to make us want to see more. The lighting is fantastic as well considering you picked golden hour. I recently got a onewheel v1 while waiting for my pint and have been debating the dji osmo pocket as a camera so seeing you use one definitely helps boost the confidence in its abilities. The voiceover was super clean, no pops, rustles or heavy breathing. I commend you on your versatility between the machines you rode, being able to showcase how they can be pushed to limits but also able to recover from pushing them past their limits. This is a perfect example of when you see the passion and hard work of content creators really shine. 10/10 would recommend.

    Beautiful production man, this video is chill af. It's obvious that you like carving on the LaCroix better because your Onewheel skills are found wanting. The Onewheel is a carving machine, limited only by the ability of the rider.

    • @yoursource3170
      @yoursource3170  Před 5 lety +3

      Hey bro thanks for watching. True, I love the carve on the Lacroix and I am newer to the onewheel. It's amazing to see what some veteran riders can do on the onewheel. I guess I personally just prefer 4 wheels to 1. You're right though that the onewheel is an awesome board and that under the feet of a very experienced rider you can carve it up. I think the feeling you get, the ride experience, is super different between the two. It's really only my personal preference for the Lacroix's carve. It's subjective and at the end of the day I just hope people are able to enjoy watching my videos and are a little bit better informed on the different options available. Ride safe bro.

    Guess I'm taking the Lacroix out today. Great video! Such a fun board. Also picked up a Mini X the other week and it complements the Lacroix perfectly. Much easier to carry around and you get that maneuverability that you don't really get with such a big/wide board with AT tires. I also agree on your onewheel thoughts. It's a cool thing but the carving just doesn't really compare to a nice longboard setup and the speed is just a bit low. Never really understood the diehard community it has.

If you went to Montreal I bet you Alex would probably let you demo a Lacroix. You might also want to check to see if any riders in your area are willing to let you take a ride on theirs. There's quite a different feeling between riding the onewheel and the lacroix. Sometimes people don't have that option though and that's one of the main reasons I made this video. That turning radius on the LaCroix is surprising. Kind of a deal-breaker.
    I have had the OneWheel XR since summer 2018 and like the simplicity of no controller and the magical floaty feeling. However, you can absolutely not speed on it! Going beyond max. rated speed just causes nosedive without hardly any warning. I've had more than one suspected scaphoid fracture as a result of pushing the OneWheel too far. I highly recommend Flexmeter D30 wristguards and Bern Watts or similar medium speed helmet. 12-15 mph to the store is fine. Lugging the board around the store is a bit annoying.
    I have had the Boosted Stealth since early 2020 (right before they closed) and absolutely love it. Using the remote to both slow to a halt (and hill hold) as well as throttling further back for reverse is so handy for 3-point turns. I went 8 miles once without ever having to get down. In fact, sometimes I relax and loosen up by swaying back and forth doing tricks and burnouts. Reverse is important to me. BUT, it has only 85mm wheels. Wooden bridges are doable but no fun. It is an absolutely beautifully designed board and a real shame the company went out of business. If they were still around and making an AT version, I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
    Just this week bought the Evolve GTR and am honestly underwhelmed. Responsiveness in GTR mode meets or exceeds the Boosted Stealth, but the remote takes some getting used to. From what I've read, the trick is to never ever drop the remote or else the separate braking button could randomly engage braking at high speed. The acceleration curve is VERY saggy in lower modes and almost too touchy in GTR mode. Lack of reverse bothers me. Every time I hit a dead-end, I have to get off, pick the thing up or kick it sideways to turn. It's a shame because the trucks are so incredibly steer-able. On a two-lane road, if I lean full in, I could probably turn, but that's not the move I am used to. On the Boosted, I just do the 3-point and whiz off.
    I was considering returning the Evolve and getting a Lacroix Nazare, but seeing it in action makes me realize it's more for carving straightaways and dirt hills than tight turns in urban environments.

I found that after about 30-50 miles (sorry I don’t know exact numbers) that my board felt way more carvy. We actually have 2 LaCroixs. One is mine and one is my wife’s. Although I have yellow blocks in the front and orange in the back and she has all yellow since she weighs much less, mine is older and thus more carvy. Her’s is starting to get much better now but there was quite a notable difference at first. One word of caution is that before the blocks have been broken in they will be more stable at higher speeds. This is important to note so that you don’t get surprised riding high speed as they loosen up more they you’re used to causing you to fall. You should be fine as long as you aren’t wreck-less, but just be careful. Enjoy the ride bro and thanks very much for watching.

      I personally have never found a hill that the Lacroix couldn't flatten. Evolve is also strong but not as much and since the battery is much smaller your range will be more of an issue than with the Lacroix. The onewheel isn't a bad hill climber but I wouldn't say that it's where that board shines. If you have a lot of hills then Lacroix is the way to go in my opinion.

      Good question. I actually want to do a review of the TSG Pass helmet in the near future. I personally really like mine. I haven’t used it in the summer heat yet though. It may be a bit hot in the summer months. We’ll see. I haven’t had mine a full year yet. I do like it overall though and safety is super important to me so I think it’s good option. Kinda bulky though to just carry around when you’re not wearing it. If you’re rolling at over 20 mph though I personally like the idea of a full-face helmet and the protection it offers. I also like that it cuts down on wind noise significantly too. I’ll go more in depth in the review. Hope that helps in the meantime though. Thanks for watching.

      Lee Speirs Yeah if you ever fall you’ll be very thankful for a good helmet. To me it’s just not worth the risk. Helmets can be a bit irritating at times but no where near as bad as a life altering injury or death. The TSG is a pretty solid option in my opinion.

    • @yoursource3170

      Glad you enjoyed the video. I used to own one of the kaly boards for a bit. It was one of his older models and I have not tried the newest 2.0 version so I can't speak from ride experience. Just in my opinion I prefer the way the deck and trucks feel on the Lacroix over the Kalynyc. I actually did get a chance to ride the new lacroix nazare lonestar board and it's pretty amazing. It has a similar feel to my Lacroix but it is even more powerful and very stable. I will be putting out a video about it as well as an interview I had with Alex the creator soon. So to answer your question I personally would go with a lacroix because I love the truck setup and deck feel. Of the 3 newer models coming out I can't imagine you'd be disappointed with any of them. But if you like the feel of a Kalynyc then I'm sure you'd love that board as well. Neither one is cheap so if you can try them first that's the best of course but I know a lot of people don't have access. Hope that helps and feel free to ask me any further questions if need be.

    "You just lean forward to go, lean back to brake..."
    Beware - leaning forward leads to 'nose dives'. Proper form on the Onewheel is to 'press' forward keeping your weight centered.

    • @yoursource3170
      @yoursource3170  Před 5 lety +5

      You bring up a valid point. The way you phrase it is much better than the way I did. You never should ride with your body weight ahead of the wheel, but rather you should be centered over it. Nosedives are no fun and can be avoided by use of proper form and not pushing the board beyond its limits. Thanks for the clarification.

I bought a second Hoyt remote to use w/ my Lacroix, but I have not figured out how to pair the Focbox via the Vesc App and config it... got as far as hooking up a USB cable to my Android, but not getting a signal... kind'a a bummer, as I really like the Hoyt Remote. The NanoV2 provides a robust radio signal, but the controller housing is junk... The USB port needs to be reinforced w/ epoxy at moment of purchase, less it will break. Don't know why Alexander does not include a better remote, and why there are no instructional videos available yet for third party upgrades. Yeah, the OneWheel rules in this department... one less thing to think about. In fact, w/ the XR you can feel confident that it will maintain its charge on a short trip w/o even having to carry a cell phone... you will catch me w/ a cup of Joe in one hand vs a controller.
