Ive been looking forward to your review- I love the book and knew this wasn’t going to work just from the trailer “liar liar pants on fire” 🤦🏽♂️
I fucking know right
Yeah big whoopsie there
They kept that line in the movie.....and don't get me started on the ending
Am not a Steph King fan so I can only imagine the torture of sitting through this lol, Emma is a hero.
Tbh I love Stephen king and Firestarter is already a low fav of mine it wasn’t a great book to begin with it didn’t need a remake which technically this isn’t a remake because it doesn’t resemble the book at all. what was Jason Blum thinking? I don’t think he read this book
I always respect that you don’t DESTROY the movies that you don’t end up liking! An honest review and insight, thanks Emma!
Thanks tanner! Helps I have this outlet i just dump my thoughts haha now im FREEEE
As a burn nurse, I couldn’t get over the scene when a character covers another’s burns with plastic wrap (plastic will retain heat and can even create a bigger burn). PSA: if you get burned, don’t do that! 1) go get it checked out pronto, 2) gently rinse with cool water, you can apply an antibiotic ointment like bacitracin, and cover with a non-adherent dressing or even a clean sheet until you can get it properly assessed. Thank you, and go watch the original instead 😉
I thought the plastic wrap was off but didn't remember why. Thank you.
The tagline for this movie should’ve been “hot girl summer.” 🔥
I go into every movie with an open mind. I liked the original, so I’ll definitely be giving this one a chance.
I don’t think they could use that considering she’s like 14…
I do hope you like it more than me Gorey!
It’s a tragedy, just how poorly produced this movie was.
@@spookyastronautsRyan is 12
Should be
Thermo.... nuclear.....war-child.
Oh wow. Looks like I'm in the minority here on this one but I really liked it.
It was such a great throw back to 80s genre flicks. The visual aesthetic, the lighting, the sort of soft focus, that Carpenter score. It was only 90 minutes and told a simple straight forward story. Aside from a couple small modern references, this could have been made in the 80s.
I get why some people may not like that. A remake in 2022, in the age of CGI, its not unreasonable to expect some grand pyrotechnic spectacle but I loved how low key it was.
Glad you enjoyed it Frogga! I am a fan of remakes that wasn’t my issue with it at all. But I’m glad someone got some enjoyment from it
Me too,i liked it.Almost everyone love Marvel movies.Me i hate those movies lol To each their own
@@retro80s40 haha I guess you with your user name liking this too proves my point that this feels like a retro movie from the 80s.
Apologies in advance for the wall of text. Saw it tonight on the cheap and two things really stood out to me:
1. The Carpenter and Co. score. Absolutely perfect, and worth an album purchase alone.
2. There was a dumpster in an alley with a sign reading "Joyland Waste Disposal". Joyland being a Stephen King novel that came out 9 years ago and is fantastic. Unlike this movie, which only just stays above dumpster fire quality.
Without spoilers, I was surprised that Rainbird was written quite different here than in the prior film and novel. Interestingly so in my opinion, granted I think George C. Scott was creepier by being closer to the source. But the new interpretation left me wanting more.
That's ultimately this film's biggest flaw; somehow the filmmakers forgot there is a distinction between "less is more" and "give the audience what they need". The bones are there, and I'm glad it took a more linear approach, but so much felt rushed or skimmed over that the stakes felt empty, despite there being some nice slower moments, fire action and even suspense. But nonetheless, too much of it feels derivative. It actually dates itself more than the 80s version with its references to modern technology and attitudes.
Speaking of, the actress who played Hollister had virtually no subtlety or nuance, and was more of an 80s villain than most of the ones we got back in the day. When she says a certain word (you know), I wanted to throw my water bottle at the screen.
Overall, I give it 5/10 for having the decency to try and entertain, but it should it have been fleshed out more. The original film is only slightly better, but at least the characters feel more realized.
Interesting how she mastered her powers by herself, in about half an hr.......
Looks like the little girl from American horror story is in this and she was the best part of the last season of ahs so I’m excited to see her in this.
Yup that's her
I was thinking the same thing. I loved her in AHS. She's a fantastic actress. I'm a little disappointed that Emma said the movie wasn't very good.
I honestly think the script didn’t let her or anyone else shine
Thank you for confirming my nonexistent expectations for this movie.
It is a bummer to hear the film was disappointing. I loved the book and the film from the 80s was...ok. I think I'll just watch on streaming.
Thanks for the thorough, spoiler free review.
How much does it cost to stream it though, wouldn't it be the same price?
Hard job but somebody got to do it! Thanks for saving two hours of our lives!🙏 Greetings from Greece.
👋🏼 🇬🇷
I loved it! It has an early '80s cult movie vibe. The direction, cinematography & Carpenter 's music creates the perfect atmosphere. It's not a great movie but I had a really good time watching it.
@eleazar duran ? It is just my opinion. Just don't watch it again and you are good. The first movie wasn't so good either, but this also doesn't matter at all. You are missing the point of why we have remakes.
What did you like? Music isn't enough
@@molasorrosalom4846 Read it again.
The direction? What direction?
Thank you for this. Really helpful. Never saw a need for a remake.
You are always honest with your reviews and we appreciate it! I might attempt to watch it at some point. But it’s totally not on the top of my list.
Hope you enjoy it more than me!
@@spookyastronauts So I really went into this movie with very low expectations. And I’m glad I did. It wasn’t a total buzz kill. I was expecting a made for tv drama and that’s exactly what I got. Nothing more nothing less. A good “whatever” couch movie.
I don't know about that. There's movies out there that are so had they're good, and kind of re-watchable.
This is just bad.
I did not expect this to be one I would like. I LOVED the original when I was growing up.
A classic example of studio churn.
I don't think I've ever seen you go at a movie this hard before!
I had no choice 🥺
The soundtrack was great. The scene with the cat was awesome. Too many filmmakers are afraid to do things like that.
Thank you for the warning on this one! Would like to know how you would have remade it to be better or maybe how you'd like to see a different Stephen King film adaptation improved. There are so many great books of his that feel like with the right team, would make great adaptations but it so rarely happens. :-/
Oh yeah there’s so much room for change in this one too! I generally am excited for most remakes to see what can be done.
For this one I would have made it more gritty, started with the origin story, then maybe gone to her as a kid after the titles. I also don’t like how they changed the last act.
I think your reviews are so thoroughly thought out and brilliant. And I often agree with you your opinions! I look to your videos when I’m not sure about a movie :)
I was forgetting it's almost winter in Australia, it's so freaking hot out here.
I trust your opinions Emma, because you are always very sagacious and wise in your judgments and because unconsciously... I knew it!... I had a bad feeling about this new version... It's a shame, I wish I was wrong...
'I'm a firestarter, twisted firestarter
You're a firestarter, twisted firestarter

Loved the original movie cant wait for this movie 😊
Great vid Emma looking forward to seeing dashcam big fan in liverpool
Thank God you have taste, it helps to know you are worth watching.
This is on Peacock which is a standard part of my cable package. I assumed it was only in theaters.
Welp, this confirms my apprehension with this one. The trailer looked flashy and almost....cheap? Something about it didn't sit right with the tone I felt the story needs. In my opinion it needs to feel grounded, bleak, tense, and yes, at its heart a father and daughter story.
Well in the book and the original, she massacres a $hit ton more agents, and she wasn't saying stupid while doing it.
@@molasorrosalom4846 I enjoyed the book and I thought the original movie did a decent job interpreting it. It sort of suffered from being a product of its time. But the tone seemed so off with this one that it just didn't get me excited. I wish they would just handover all SK story scripts straight to Mike Flannigan. He nails the tone of King's stories, and I think he would have done this one SO well. He gets family dynamics while still getting the horror elements right!!
Way better than Morbius
that for sure
I would love to visit Australia just to possibly watch a film with Emma at the theaters. (I mean Cinema)
I'm still going to see it in theaters for the simple fact we have an amazing theater with great sound and seating close to where I live, but that's too bad to hear. Thank you for your review!
Hope you enjoy it!
@@spookyastronauts just saw it. I liked it but it was too short and I agree with you not a whole lot happened.
Its 3pm and just got in from work since 5:30 am and soon as i turn on youtube ,here we go with another of your videos on something new Ohh yeah I remember the first Fire Starter when i was a young dude....hope this ones a hit.
Seeing it tomorrow morning!
What did you think of the movie?
It had its good moments but over all kind of a mess I would say. The dialogue was pretty horrible.
I watched it on Peacock and then the big screen. I really enjoyed it.
I get to see it tomorrow thanks Emma💯💖
Yeah this is really no big surprise: the trailer screamed "Shiny Modern Mass Market Horror". Consequently I was already expecting 'cool' one liners, Efron's abs, flashy bad-ass shots of the girl over pathos, etc. A shame.
I liked it. At least I wasn't bored. I liked the 80s version too. Both are a bit clunky, there's no getting away from that. I agree, the script wasn't up to much in the new one, although I didn't have a problem with the cast. Not suggesting you did. I also think David Keith fared better as the (dishevelled) dad in the first one. George C. Scott was truly frightening as Rainbird in the first one, I think he fared better too. Great Scott! What a great actor he was. For me, both versions sort of tip-toed around Stephen King's novel. It's by no means one of my favourite King horror stories, but some of the scenes in the book are unbelievably chilling. No author chills my blood quite as effectively as Stephen King when he's really hitting his stride! I guess if any actors abs are actually capable of carrying a movie, it's Zac Efron's! 😂 John Carpenter's score - chef's kiss 😘 Thank you, as always, for the review. x
that's what I was afraid of.. Thanks for fair warning Emma.
I haven’t read the book or seen the original film but I saw the trailer and thought all this looks interesting so I’m planning to see it this weekend
Thanks!
Thanks Horror Cash
I don't think I know anyone who gets so excited about going to the cinema, save for maybe a couple of friends who are big Star Wars or super hero fans. I think it's nice to see people get excited for things that bring them joy although I've personally never liked cinemas because for me the perfect viewing experience (particularly for horror movies) is at home on my own, or with a couple of friends.
I had a 'premonition' that this film would be terrible but then it's a modern remake, so I didn't exactly need to be psychic.
I can tell you a lot of horror fans still do :D
Emma, you are 100% correct. I watched it on Peacock streaming a couple of days ago and I thought it was awful. It strayed too far from the book and I was very disappointed with the third act. It was a mess. I never liked the 1984 film, but it did seem to follow the book a lot better. Being a massive John Carpenter fan, I did like his score and felt it was the only real bright spot in the film. I appreciate your in-depth reviews on your site. All the best! 👍 P.S.- I love your sweet dog. ❤️
I saw it in the theaters today and wish I hadn't wasted my time... I'm curious about The Vigil now though, and I wonder why the director couldn't have made this one as good.
Heck even if a movie is not that great go to the theaters they need your business. Between the pandemic and the streaming services they're having a hard time please give them your business. I only watch horror movies and I go as frequently as I can. Good review and cool video Emma!👍
I get it, but sell it tonus why we should spend like 14 dollars a ticket, to see a bad movie?
I’m so jealous that you guys are having Fall right now 😌🍂🍁
What’s it like having Halloween in the Spring?? Ever since seeing Boys in the Trees, I’ve have been extremely curious about this ☺️🎃👻⚰️🪦💀
Yes! But Halloween isn’t a big thing here
"Get your shirt back on, we've got business to do" 😂
Horror business 💼 is important!
What I enjoyed the most was watching the actors do their darnedest to sell the material they were given. Gloria Ruben in particular. She had some of the WORST dialogue and just went for it and it was hilarious.
The dialogue 🫠🫠🫠
You want me to say, "You're a superhero?"
Guess I'll give it shot on Peacock 😅
Pass! (On the movie, not on your review. Your review was good and useful).
I completely agree with your review. I had a huge problem with Director of Photography, the entire film felt flat, there was no separation in the lazy compositions especially the scenes that were just oversaturated in blue. It felt like I was watching a student film especially since they crossed the 180 degree line on several occasions. The Original is the only one that exists in my opinion
thankyou Emma, saved me from wasting my time!🤠
Sorry to bring bad news!
13:04. If you GENUINELY dislike a movie, you should be able to say so. People want to hear your ACTUAL opinion about a movie - they are not here to have you being a cheerleader for everything ever made (that would also be a deceptive thing to do, because some movies are OBJECTIVELY better or worse than other movies).
Some movie recommendations:
The Cellar (2022) - a deviation from the "family living happily ever after" formula - also, has mythical and mythological elements as part of the horror.
The Northman (2022) - has some horror elements (blood, gore), but also has some deeper storytelling elements than a typical revenge story usually does - the fight for the "magic sword", for example.
Also, Prey (2022) teaser (new Predator movie) has just dropped. Doesn't show a lot, though.
I saw this movie last night in Adelaide and it just reminded me of the Pet Sematary remake! It wasn't the worst movie, but just felt like it didn't have much 'soul', so to speak. Or anything else going on for that matter.
I didn’t like the pet sematary remake that much but at least it had heightened moments!
Is it worst than pet sematary remake?
@@spookyastronauts You're not wrong!
@@danielrubinstein896 I would watch PS again... this, prob not.
The original Pet Sematary is a classic.
Wow, that is so sad to hear ! I saw this video pop up and immediately though, "Omg, is this out now !?" Unfortunately, it doesn't come out in my country until June 1st, but at least I don't have the need to watch it right this second.
Yeah it can wait !
I am a fan of the original, because of what I think came across as odd. The bad guys were diverse, some hapless some chillingly capable, some unbalanced but imposing, which felt very true-to-life for an organization like the one depicted. The father's ability was terrifying but also clearly both painful and a violation of the father's own beliefs, and limited in very reasonable ways. I think of Firestarter, both the book and the original movie, as being a 'sweet-spot' between horror and the edges of a more realistic look at a superhero story, where the thesis is 'power that harms others has consequences'. And in terms of themes, that movie reflected that both in the empowered folks, and in the villains if in a different way.
I'm not sure what in the trailer made me feel a dread that any point of the original works was going to be lost, but I'm not surprised to hear the bit about trope salad... sigh.
Thanks for the head's up, and I may re-watch the original again. It's only been a few years since the last re-watch for me, but I'd like to see how well it holds up to my memory!
I will not link the Prodigy music video here, but I am tempted...
I was tempted to put it in, but copyright
Yay I got to do the watch along (on peacock)! So fun.
I went in expecting pure trash and I got exactly that. But since that was my mood I actually enjoyed it - well kinda. I agree with your score.
But, um, this is in no way a horror movie. It’s a dime store marvel movie knockoff with blood. This is what I’m always trying to tell people. Some horror movies aren’t horror, and some dramas are absolutely horrifying.
Still, Carpenter’s still got it, she was a cute kid, and Zac Efron hot damn.
Haha glad you got a laugh out of it Mark
Zac Efron lives in Byron bay now
Great review as always..TBH I didn't have particularly high hopes. The original movie was very poorly received and reviewed when it was released (yes, I am that old) and the book is probably, IMO, a weaker effort for that period of King's work. King is pretty hit and miss film wise, and tends to be more miss than hit in my opinion, although of course there are classics out there.
My expectations are none but I’m glad I’ve already decided to watch this one from home and not go thru the effort of seeing it in theaters.
Hope you like it more than me Claire
I love ❤️ movies 🎥 fire starter 1984 and the remake 2022
I was so excited to see Efron in a horror film, but I’m definitely not watching this at the cinema as per your review. Looks like I have to go see Everything Everywhere All At Once, so I guess it’s not to bad.

There was no CGI in the original.

I Cant wait, but I am scary now lol
At least the original film has some charmed to it, but this one was dull and boring. It's like they didn't ever take any chances, even with the 'R' rating (here in the States). Luckly, I watched it on Peacock so I saved my money! LOL!

Haha
There's so many great horror books out there waiting to be made into films. Remakes are so hit and miss.
I try not to judge remakes/reboots before I watch them, but I grew up with the original so I'm biased. I'm 41 now and saw it for the first time when I was 11 - it was my first horror movie and my best friend and I watched it when she slept over one night. My parents figured I could handle it (they had already seen it years before) so we rented it. My bf was already a horror movie pro by this age, but man I was freaked near the beginning with the flashback to "The Shop" scene and that guy who had clawed his eyes out. I needed a 2 hour break before we could finish the movie 😂. But that made me a certified horror fiend. And I read the book a few years later. So I couldn't help but roll my eyes when I heard about this remake. And I mean that Tangerine Dream score...come on 😁🖤.
Now would you rate the 2022 version to the 1980s version???
When the trailers where nothing but "real life superhero" I got very worried
Haha
I know. She never wanted to be a hero in the book. She just wants to be free from The Shop.
I think the remake of Firestarter is really good and the original from 1984 I have them both on DVD.There is a Firestarter: Part 2 called Rekindled the sequel SUCKS.
I don't have anything to say about Firestarter. I wanted to let you know I just watched The Sadness on Shudder and holy crap that was a trip. I loved it. As gory as it was it doesn't show you everything and lets your mind fill in the blanks. The love story at the hard of it was quite touching. It's gonna be a horror classic for sure.
I reviewed it :)
@@spookyastronauts Yeah, I know. I just wanted to let you know how I felt about it since having seen it. It's my follow up comment to the comment I left on your Sadness review! haha
Too bad on this one, but hey, I now know to watch The Vigil! Thank you!☺️
Jason Blum sometimes release a plum job and sometimes a bummed movie
I stayed away from reviews until I'd watched it myself.... oh dear this one was not for me. Can't remember the last time we did this but we turned it off just over half way through 😬
I am so so about this movie. I adore the book and OG movie. I just think they could've done so much more with it so I was a little let down. I didn't expect it to top the OG but I'm not mad just disappointed. They could've really went there with it making it a true horror movie.
Yeah I don’t really get mad about movies, I was just bored tbh haha
Thanks for suffering for us Emma. Alas...
They should remake this movie but let you be the lead actress
I love the remake way more than the original.
It’s just way better in every way I don’t understand the hate.
I honestly think the big issue with this film was the writing as you mentioned. It was written by the guy who wrote Halloween Kills which told me everything I needed to know. Keith Thomas may of directed this..but he had no hand in the script- unlike his previous film The Vigil. But hey what we got was another pointless remake. This could of been a good opportunity to make a very average movie from the past into something better. They failed unfortunately.
Holy crap already seen it 😮 Jealous but in a still like you kinda way 😋 Liked the original and admit this one looks more in tune with the darker themes. Shame it didn't turn out as good, especially with water trailer looking promising. You rock always Emma, comfy Gromit a bonus 😊
Darker trailer I meant #spookyastronauts excuse typo 😅
Firestarter ❤️🔥 Emma 🍒
While it is 80s cheese. I definitely prefer the 1984 Firestarter. Didnt like this 2022 version. Only good thing was that they finally got a Native American actor for Rainbird, as it should be
hmmm i will not Waste my time hehehe thank you emma for your review
I saw this movie on Peacock at around 9 PM NYC time tonight. I must be honest with you, while I do agree with everything you say about the movie, I still enjoyed it very much. To me, it was really good. Why? I enjoy watching movies about girls/women with unique abilities, like Charlene McGee, Carrie White, and others. So, having said that, there was no way I wasn't going to enjoy this movie. Also, it is EXTREMELY rare for me to watch a movie I won't like. If I know I won't like it, based on the subject matter, I won't watch it. One of the rare exceptions to this was Battlefield: Earth. I was working at a movie theater at the time it came out, so I saw an employee preview screening of it. After I watched it, I wanted my money back, even though I had seen it for free.
Why your city of Perth look like New York? So nice
Is it weird that this review kinda makes me want to see the movie? 😂😂
What gets you most excited about the movie?
Better hurry up before they pull it from theaters.
Saw it yesterday, and my girl and I were the only ones in there
The trailer looks like Stephen King by way of a Lifetime movie, so I wasn't expecting much. Definitely will pass on this.
Looking forward to your review of Men!
Haha yeah it’s a bit like that. Men isn’t out here until mid June 🥺
Weather is the same in western Oregon (northwest U.S.) right now. Cold, rainy, gloomy... Firestarter, the novel is a fantastic, engaging story that was made into the original 1984 film from Mark Lester. That movie I was never a big fan of; it felt too shallow to me, stripped of much of the ominousness of the novel, which is to say... as Charlie aged, would her power also grow so that she could initiate the equivalent of a hydrogen bomb. Too bad they can't get this one right.
I was originally gonna go see it tonight then that changed to I'm probably gonna watch it on peacock and this review just sealed it's fate looks like I'm gonna check it out tomorrow after work on peacock
How did you like the movie?
I feel like as soon as I saw the trailer I knew this wasn't going to be a good one XD
