What Is Dolby Atmos and DTS-X? - A General Overview and Review

  • The video contains a general overview of Dolby Atmos/DTS-X, including history, requirements, configurations, limitations, and my thoughts on these formats. Dolby Atmos is a immersive surround sound format used in some movies. Unlike other formats, Dolby Atmos and DTS-X support ceiling speakers which are positioned above the listening position. These discrete speakers provide a unique 3D experience that adds a unique feel to most movies. Dolby Atmos can be configured in two different ways. It can either be setup using in-ceiling speakers or Dolby Atmos-Enabled speakers can be used. A Dolby Atmos-enabled speaker is a speaker that's angled towards the ceiling and reflects sound off the ceiling in order to create an overhead effect. This works well in some rooms but doesn't provide the same experience as actual in-ceiling speakers.

    Finally! Someone that gives a straight answer to a needed question. I am planning on building in my 26x12 basement into a home theater, you have given me awesome information. I currently have 5 Klipsch shelf speakers to start with and 2 Infinity sides, but will need to get another receiver based on your great recommendation. I will check out the Denon (as I have been looking into them) as well as the Onkyo and possibly either Yamaha or Marantz (although pricey), still you have given me a great start. Have been puzzled on Atmos based speakers, but you have answered my question... Thank you!

    You should have mentioned upscaling. Upscaling takes a 5.1 or 7.1 and adds the ceiling speakers into the mix. Neural:X sounds amazing and in my opinion just as good or better than Atmos or DTS:X. Any receiver with Atmos will have upmixing capability. And my system only has 2 ceiling speakers and still sounds great! And if you cannot, or are afraid to cut holes in your ceiling you can use small satellite speakers and mount them to the ceiling for Atmos, I repurposed some Polk RM7's and they sound great.

    Hi, I'm in a similar scenario. I also have Klipsch with RF7 up front 4 RP250 (side & rear) RC64 center and a 18" Velodyne sub. I have a drop ceiling which is 8 feet and have been contemplating my 4 Atmos speakers. Joists have Roxul in between to mute the sound to my first floor. My concerns are how much audio is lost above since there is no speaker enclosure or backing on the speaker and any issues with timbre matching?
    Thank you.

    Great video, I also watched your setup video....very nice. I'm looking at a Klipsch setup myself at the moment. Here's what I'm looking at: Pair of RP-280F, Pair of RP-240S, RP-440C Center, and R-110SW. I'd like to add dolby later but I'm not sure if I'd want the Dolby enabled speakers by klipsch to hang at the front wall or in ceiling yet. My question for you though, considering the 280F series, do you think they will go well with the rest of the setup as in the 440C and 240S or will I need the 450C and 250S series on center and surround...or go down to RP-260F series? Now, my living area that i'm setting this up in isn't quite a theater room like yours and I do not have a back wall for rear speakers just the side walls for the surrounds. Also, considering budget, I'm looking at the Yamaha TSR-7810 7.2 receiver from costco, will that work well with this setup? Thanks

Also is it mandatory to buy dolby atmos home theatre system or normal 7.1 can work fine with dolby atmos av receiver? Also is it ok to just add two normal ceiling speaker? Great info. I have some questions for you that i hope you can answer. I'm new to this Atmos and Dts-s thing, and i am interested in having my home setup done to accommodate. If the movie you're watching doesn't have these options will your ceiling or ceiling bouncers still play, and if so, does it still sound good? Also, if the ceiling speakers still play, would or could i still get the same kind of effect if using a 7.1? The reason i am asking is because of my room setup. Unfortunately my listening area is against a wall. i am currently using a 7.1 system and running it at 5.1, because it sounds so much better. Can i use two nice bookshelf speakers and aim them at the ceiling, or hang them from the ceiling angled at me. Thank you

I actually have everything in your 7.2 system, not sure If i'm about Atmos yet, so most likely use the RP-280F for mains, also keep my Onkyo TX929 for the time being. Just wanted to get your impressions on the system, I've always enjoyed the sound of my speakers and the Klipsch brand, I'm torn between this system and spending a bit more and going the Martin Logan route, the motion series, most likely the motion 40, and a couple dynamo 1000 subs, motion 35xt (rears). I'm going to demo the ML at a local store soon, unfortunately no one locally sells or demos the higher end Klipsch models, so I'm left getting word of mouth reviews. Cheers!

    Do you know of anyone who does high end audio for gaming? I interested in adding atmos to my pc gaming speakers but wanted a bit more info.

    Are you using both the atmos enabled speakers for your front heights and ceilings for rears? That hybrid combo is my dream setup exact same speakers take me a decade to save up for it haha I might start with a 5.1.2 set up and expand. I recently bought a 5.1.2 soundbar with rear speakers which is by far the best soundbar I've ever had but all it really did is wet my beak with atmos enough to make me certain I want the real thing.

    I had a question for you that maybe you can help me on.
    I'm in the market for a home theater system. I also in the process in buying a new t.v. currently I'm going with the Samsung q9f. And originally I was going with bose life style 650. After a few reviews, I notice that must people said that Bose is not true Dolby atmos or 4k sound quality. So long story short. What do you recommend so home system that I know I won't have to worry about upgrading anytime soon? Price range nothing over 4k since originally that was my budget on Bose lifestyle.

    Great video. I also have that same Denon Receiver. But your speakers and subs *look* (looks can be deceiving though) like they piss all over mine. I haven't set my system up yet (7.2.4) but I'm fortunate that the room is very ideal for an Atmos setup.

    does the BOSS surround support DOLBY ATMOS?

  • @jemstar33
    @jemstar33 Před 6 lety +1

    Question, if a movie or streaming video does not have dolby atmos support what does that mean exactly? does it mean that the entire speaker system or soundbar will not play the audio, or will only the speakers that reflect off the ceiling not work?
