  • How I did a 8v to 16v conversion. A redblock and whiteblock mix! We go on a deep detailed close up tour of my 505 whp b230f with a b234 head on it. I explain my experiences, how I went from 8v to 16v, what parts I used, and the difficulty I have had switching from Volvo 8v to 16v head swap experience tips and secrets.
    In the video I said "this bottom end has had two major episodes" . Truth be told , its had three with the Air filter sucked through the Precision turbo. That is where 98% of all the carnage is from, on aq171 head, around combustion chamber, and on raised edges of the Wiseco pistons. Bits of turbo impeller were the origin. Dyno run was a month after that carnage. Look at the chip on the number four piston!! Golf ball dimples work! :) Wagon mafia in full effect!
    Did you know you can find these heads in boats? They are considered Penta heads if in a marine application, and specs are just a touch different.
    Special thanks to Yoshifab, for the billet gear at $200 , what a steal! ( heavy sarcasm) My car cost a hundred more. Lol. See pinning the crank video On how to actually fix the problem after spending ass loads on a stupid gear that really doesn't fix the problem of the soft keyway shearing. I feel like ipd volvo turbo had a part in that (I paid double) ridiculous price gouging. That keyway, crank gear and harmonic balancer are huge performance issues that need to be modified for higher powered applications. Upgrading just the gear will not fix the entire issue. Please Don't let these companies convince you their part is worth it, when I have proof they are not. Especially when you run a b234+ turbo, or a b230f+b234 head+turbo.
    We used some Simple Green, some Husky tools and did a PB Blaster test. We got all the parts and supplies from Oreilly's auto parts.
    We took some pictures at "White Rock Country" In Houston Texas, with the Houston Texans with the Volvo turbo out the hood.
    This is a sloppy mechanics Volvo with zip ties on cars, like fastbrixs uk or fast bricks uk, with engine swaps like the aq171 volvo penta, a diy Turbo World engine swap.
    You will be in for a surprise at the end, so watch it all until the end as to not be confused, and keep your Turbo World by subscribing and share like bell to see what my next move will be, Thanks for watching!

    Great demo on the 16v. The 1972 B20 is definitely a copy of the late 60s euro 2.0 Ford Escort. I'm not knocking it, heads and parts are interchangeable up to 1992 on Ford Lima and Volvo B19-B234. I think I would buy one of those kits to put a steel pin in the new pressed on balancers and put one on either side of the balancer and a single on all the pulleys. They are a snug fit, have to tap them in. Stud loctite on the crank bolt. You will have to heat it with mapp gas to take it off, but will never have any slop like half moons and the bolt will never come out without heat. I'm thinking about building a Ford 2.3 with a Volvo head for a Merkur Sierra RS 500 clone. Someone is trying to sell a B234 head from a AQ171 Volvo Penta with inserts in every exhaust, corrosion all over it, and bent valves with no camshafts. He's only asking $1350, totally ridiculous lol. I can get a Cosworth blue top head bare for that with no corrosion. I'd give him $350 for a bare corroded B234 head if it was pressure tested. 4 inserts and it has to be pretty thin in places.

    • @TurboWorld
      @TurboWorld  Před 2 lety

      Your idea is on point! I love the old Cossies and Merkurs! That price is ridiculous for a corroded head. I wouldn't pay more than $400 for one. But they are hard to find. O i did your idea, but before you commented. :)

    interesting to hear your experience with the 16V head, have opted to build a B314F myself(103mm stroker crank instead of the stock 80mm and 2nd overdim pistons from ACM.se), but naturally aspirated with 4x50mm throttle bodies (itb's) intake valves are 38mm and exhaust 32.5mm as well as the head is ported for some extreme flow. in sweden they run these kind of builds with higher comp at e85 for rally at close to 400 crank hp, but i have opted for a 11.83:1 comp (low comp) for 95 octane fuel and daily usability

      @@TurboWorld yes i was planning a 8 valve head porting and penta crank but the build had a tiny snowball effect.... so billet crank and forget H-rods and pistons, acm recommend a high flow oil pump for bether lubrication and the crank and piston kit has a 8k rpm limit before the pistons will suffer from lubrication starvation, so the rpm will most likely be cut off at 6.5-7k rpm to maintain reliability, so my hope is low 300 wheel hp from the NA engine going thru a bmw 6 speed diesel trans so i get closer gearing.

Matt and I had 3 16V heads here. They all had different numbers. One was a 532, I believe one was a 1262 and the third one was something different again. I believe the 532 was the AQ171 head and I'll confirm that the next time I look see it. The AQ171 head has a different combustion chamber then the B234 head we have. The 171 has more of a pent roof, the B234 has more of a gentle curve to it. Not substantially different, but different just the same..

    • @TurboWorld
      @TurboWorld  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes you can modify the stock pistons. I got laughed at for starting with na junkyard engines and shaving a few mm off the tops of the pistons, then weighing them to balance them. Some use a valve relief jig that can be made. Others build the engines with forged Wiseco pistons for b234 with the 4 valve reliefs cut. I have done all these methods, including not cutting one stock na motor and just slapping the 16v head on it and it worked. But that was a lucky case of a virgin non shaved block and a virgin non resurfaced head. But it is possible.
      Use chewing gum and check your clearances by bolting them together and spinning them over, or clay, or silly puddy. Or even a borescope attached to a phone. Many different options here, great question!

Probably not such a bad idea because it looks like there is plenty of room and I'd likely have to get a custom made manifold for it to work properly in a 240 anyways. Also my nephew a few years ago put some Legos inside of it. I'm pretty sure I got them all out but some Legos are small and there is no way I'm trying to run an engine with a possible Lego and metal shaving from someone trying to widen the intake side. It was kind of my fault I should have never stored Legos in the same room as my 16v head. A kid was bound to get curious and mess with it lol. @@TurboWorld Yeah if everything works out as it should I'll happily let you know. I know the whiteblock and P80 cars in general have more going on electronically but this video game a lot of insight into things that might need to be considered when doing my conversion.
      I've got a little fun fact for you too. The 16v motor actually was developed by Volvo Penta, their marine division. Then they realized that the 16v motor makes good power and put them in their cars.

      E85 is awesome. Don't trip. Methanol injection has its own place, of course.

      @@TurboWorld I was gonna say "I don't remember there being any after 93....lol" 😆 I just started cleaning up a B234F head to revalve and plane that will go into a 93 240 bottom end (squirters 🤘) and then get a turbo and stuff.... Then mate it to a CD009 trans and put it into my 1970 142. 😎 I still need to come up with an idea for a 74 145 I have too. I could just go B230F swap for easy reliability, but I also have a B5234T4 engine sitting here. 🤔🤔🤔🤘
