      Of course it depends on the purpose of them driving it. Was it meant to be driven around a track and have fun with? Then yhea there's an inherent risk of it breaking and you can't expect them to pay. Engine blowing up could be something you yourself did wrong in the past when building it.

    That’s so cool to see the old brick hammered around the ring. Really surprised to see one throw a leg out of bed. I guess you could say there’s now an inspection window.
    They’re not a heavy car, 1350-1400kg tops with a turbo motor. My 244 was 1280kg.
    They are softly sprung so lean a lot but it helps allow the big heavy live axle at the rear to move without upsetting the body too much.

      A lot of the rattling sound earlier in the lap before it blew up is the fan for the ventilation in the car, which is why the owner first thought it was just the fan when they heard the rod knock. The fans in these old Volvos tend to touch the housing they're inside and make some really terrible sounds, especially when going over bumps. It was the weekend of "Live Aid" in 1985 and we were ready to drive to Benidorm in Spain
    ( from Bergen ) in an 1977 Ford Taunus 2.0L. Due to one of the guys working late the plan
    was to start driving at 23.00 Friday night and go non stop.
    We got about 7 km when the engine developed an knocking noise, so we turned around and
    limped to my workshop. We tore the head off the engine and found that cylinder 3 was missing
    a large piece of the piston, so a new engine was needed.
    Next morning we called all the local breakers yards to try to find a Ford 2.0 SOHC engine
    but no one had any in, what to do.
    Called everyone again, did they have an 1.6L SOHC engine in ?
    One breakers yard had one that he did not know the mileage or condition of so we told him
    "sold", we are coming to pick it up. While 2 of the guys went to pick it up, me and a friend
    tore the engine out of the car.
    They came back with an engine severely rusted on the outside and told us that it was
    lying on the ground outside of the breakers shed!
    Anyway, we got the engine in and connected and tried to start it. It barely cranked over
    but after some attempts it turned over easier and eventually started, success!
    We repacked the car and left at about 21.00 Saturday evening.
    The engine was not good as shown when is started boiling after 5 km, so we got some
    water from a small river and refilled the cooling system. We decided to turn around, not
    to give up, but to grab some plastic containers for water as we might need them for the
    2900 km journey ( one way ). We also packed some more tools......
    Long story short, we "boiled" our way to Spain. It got better as the rust and the gunk got
    boiled out of the coolant system.
    When we were in Benidorm, we found a Ford dealer and managed to order a new water
    pump and thermostat and swapped the parts in the Ford dealers parking lot.
    It cured the problem as the car only boiled twice on the return leg from Benidorm.
    I can safely say it was the most fun road trip/vacation I have ever had........

    B230 bottom end... yeah, it can happen... be proud you killed one, Misha! That is not an easy task. I've had several of these with many more miles and pushed as hard as you were pushing. I've also had 2 break from other issues. One was an oil pump pressure spring break and the other was head gasket failure. I've had one go through the side of the block like that, but it was after we abused the *crap out of it (driving from Dallas to Wichita KS with a known blown head gasket - but had to get home ASAP and didn't want to abandon car... things you do when you're poor) it made it home (took 12 quarts of oil) and then 2 weeks later, it got revved very high, and the wrist pin let go, putting the connecting rod through the block up high like what that one did. Almost no leakage of oil, but a dead motor.

You can hear that the noise isn't consistent with engine RPM.

    240s definitely are an underdog on the race track but the Group A race cars proved the chassis very competitive in the 80s so don't let their boxy looks fool you, they can be track beasts too

      @zaaajac Před 10 měsíci +7

      Haha I thought exactly the same - that noise COULD be a fender or smt, but then I saw that it depended on the revs and I was like “ok, that is the matter of time, I wonder whether he will notice that”. Turns out he didn’t 😂 but it lasted for quite a while, so that’s something

    • @CaptainSeamus
      @CaptainSeamus Před 10 měsíci +4

      that rattle in most of the video is actually the a/c heater fan motor... it sits in the center console, and on older 240s they start making that noise, especially when turning corners... and it's a real PITA to change out - with some careful cutting, you can get it done in about 4 hours. Volvo pays 12 hours in tech manual to change it. It's like the entire dash is built around it. The first actual knock I heard was just as they were coming into/around Carousel, and it was different by just a tone downward.
      I should state, I've owned 17 Volvos, and broken 3 motors ( all redblocks, each with over 200,000 miles on them, one with over 450,000 miles on it... and it rattled for a LONG time, albeit not pushing redline for 10 miles) so I know what they sound like when coming apart.

Over 1 million km isn't unusual for these engines at all. It must have spun a bearing or worse judging from the sound.

      @stridsvagn1039 Před 10 měsíci +1
