  • The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV is Chevrolet's inaugural entry into the rapidly growing list of electric trucks, a segment that includes such heavy hitters as the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Rivian R1T and the GMC Hummer EV. In this video, Alistair Weaver from Edmunds brings you a first look at the upcoming Chevy Silverado EV and details the top 10 differences between it and the F-150 Lightning. Will the new Chevy Silverado EV have the goods to compete against Ford's all-electric pickup? We'll have to wait to get behind the wheel of both, but early indications are promising. Just because they are putting large batteries in these trucks does not mean they are efficient. Many will make the mistake of buying these trucks not realizing what it takes to charge them and how long it will take to fully charge them. They are using big heavy batteries that will require a lot of electricity. How many KW hours will be needed to charge and if you are using this for work how often will you need to charge. Then think about how many hours a week you will sit at a charging station. How far is that station from your house. Charging at home? How many days a week will you need to charge the truck and what will it cost you? Edmunds sure as hell doesn’t know.

To charge the long range battery from empty to The basic charger that can plug into your existing 240 v out will take 19 hours. You can install a 48A charging station at home that cuts it to 13 hours . You can install an 80A one that will take 8 hours. (That’s overnight) . Note , that’s from empty to full. But most people don’t drive 300 miles daily. So EITHER charger will be good enough since you’ll simply plug it in nightly when you get home. Most cities will give credits to offset the cost if you install one of the extra cost charging stations. The cost at home for a full charge is about $11.00 at today’s rates. You will You’ll pay a LOT more to fill a gas tank with enough gasoline to go 300 miles. If you’re in a hurry, you can use fast charging station. That will take about 45 minutes. (Lunch break) the cost will vary depending on location. But charging at home is actually MORE convenient than stopping for gas because you just plug it in when you get home and unplug it in the morning. Admittedly this won’t meet everyone’s needs. Hint, don't get the RST and don't option the Silverado EV with a mid gate. It's called choice.

I was born in 2000. and seeing the year 2024 for a car model year is SO weird... like it's already 2022. what

Wow! it can go nearly 400 miles. My old one can go 400 miles on a single tank of gas, then I stop and refuel in a couple of minutes and go another 400 miles. You better start looking for a charging station around 350 miles and be prepared to sit for awhile.

Unless you go on road trips every single month which nobody does this isn’t an issue

When gas goes to $5 a gallon, how much will it cost you to fill up that ICE truck? Now think about $10 a gallon or about not being able to buy gas at all.

@@brownro214 electricity price isn't fixed either, it can go up any time and it most likely will go up.
Same thing as you say for gas - you may not find a charging station at all.

@Allan Cameron so I can recharge with the fossil fueled electricity and after 80000 miles dispose of the poisonous batteries.

Too bad the $40k base model will get marked up by dealers due to popularity and limited supply making it non-competitive with Rivian R1T and Cybertruck.

Chevys payload seems quite low - 1200#?? That’ll be the e biggest limit for towing too.
