I love how much of a nerd Jonathan Sims is in this story: even when he's being hunted by some kind of spooky worm entity, he takes the time to do dramatic readings of each of the testimonies he's transferring over to audio format. Guess you need to find joy in your work somehow!
Yeaaaah... That's the reason 😂
that's a former theatre kid if I've ever seen one
I often wonder if everyone in this series dabbled in the arts as a young kid, because why is everyone so dramatic in their writing?
Jared 19 is in a lot of libraries for someone who doesn't know how to read...
wrong one, this one is Gerard
It’s called a character arc
Jared and Gerard are very different characters.
Gerard Keay (aka Gerry) is the goth lad with dyed black hair and eye tattoos, who hunts down many a book, and tries to save people. 👁
Jared Hopworth is the big bulky bone man who has read one (1) book and that’s only because it was about bones, and has never saved anyone ever. In fact most of the time people need to be saved from him. 💪🏻🦷🦴
I know Jon pronounces Gerard and Jared the same, and it confused me the first time through too. So I’m trying to save y’all from that same confusion! 😅
🌌It was a joke guys🌌
As in ''Hi, My name's Jared, I'm 19 and I never learned how to fucking read''
there's Jared and there's Gerrard. Jared Hopworth was the one from the library, this is Gerard Keay
That name Jurgen Leitner sends me into a panic, a deep panic.
And we dang near started the story with that one too. Instantly on edge.
JURGEN LEITNER!?
Avatar of the whore biggest clown in the circus laughed out of town cowboy motherfucking Jurgen Leitner
We’re did we last here form him again?
@@julia.s9689 If memory serves, it was the Boneturner’s Tale. The book had a plate declaring it to be “From the Library of Jurgen Leitner.” Ex Altiora had a similar plate.
so... each corridor seems to fit a theme from previous recordings (feeling of falling, the weird darkness, the blood, the heat without flames)... very INTERESTING
also big ew at them worm sounds
God, I need a Leightner origin story lol.
I'm just picturing the Rusty Quill foley guys stirring mac'n'cheese in front of a mic, trying not to giggle
So from what I gather these are the entities mentioned in the series:
- flesh hive
- Micheal the bone turner
- the angler fish
- angela the jigsaw witch
- the shapeshifters
- the burning demon
- the choking darkness
- the vampires/possibly death
- the meat.. *shudder*
- the unseen church
- the freaking sky
Important recurring characters:
- the key family
- the Lukas family
-Jurgen lightner
- the architect
- Micheal Crew
- Breecher and hope moving company
Quick correction:
Michael is not the bone turner. That’s Jared Hopworth. Big bulky bone boy.
Michael with the bones in his hands is a different entity (that I won’t spoil details about in case first time listeners are reading this). He has long curly blonde hair and sharp hands, and is described as tall as thin.
Also not to be confused with Michael Crew, the lightning scar man. (although he prefers to be called Mike, so that helps me differentiate) 😊
Also:
Keay, not Key
Jurgen Leitner, not Lightner
Breekon and Hope, not Breecher
And the architect is Robert Smirke. (unless you mean a different architect.) ☺️
* furiously takes notes *
You forgot the piper monster
I think "The spiral" which makes loops in certain areas like in the story "freefall" and the slaughterhouse in a story i dont remember the name.

Delivery men with cockney accents? Like the delivery men in episode 2 "Do Not Open"?
Breekon & Hope, baby!
OMG
I was admittedly mildly disappointed to hear them, actually. I recall them being based in Nottingham (though I may have misremembered) and was really hoping for a Nottingham accent!
Marking the third appearance of them (for anyone who - like me - is going through for the first time).
"Looking down some of them made me feel oddly queasy; there was one that -- for all the world -- it felt like I was going to fall into it." I'd reckon that somewhere down that corridor "Ex Altiora" was stored.
I need to start taking notes of characters, what they did, and what happened to them, so I can make proper connections
Dude, I've already got like 7 pages of notes already
The wiki page called characters by episode is really helpful

Haha I had a little piece of paper sticked to my bed and made quick notes at the beginning when I didn't know who is who yet and it went somewhat like that:
- Jonathan - The main guy
- Sasha - the CalEoPe or whatever
- Tim - "the hot one"
- Martin - TEA&POETRY
- Basira - police
- Daisy - badass police
- Melanie - ghostUK or sth
- Gertrude - dead old lady
- Gerard Keay - gothic one
- Elias - boss of the boss
- Yur.. Jur... Yurgen? Lightning-sounding surname guy from the evil books
every time.
"ah yeah ill finish this episode and head to bed."
the episode: ends with some crazy nonsense i will have to hear about before i sleep
"well one more cant hurt-"
Breekon and Hope finishing each other's sentences is so weird. I mean, all of this was weird, but when they spoke, I was like "Waheey, wait a minute!" I have a feeling that the 13 passages represents the creatures that are recurring in this podcast. Also, that makes Gerard Keiy a sort of link to them, like he was a bounty hunter of the supernatural or something. Maybe just things related to Leitner. These are all just theories though, and I'm trying my best at deductive work before the beans are spilled, just for my own personal satisfaction. On a side note, I was still caught of guard by Jonathan's shouting at the worms even though I was already expecting it from the comments.
I freaking jumped even tho i Heard it twice, the change in tone is just ...
A year later. You caught on to alot of the details pretty early on in the series. Honestly good job. Hope you see this and it gives you a smile.
@@Nizati Haha, I really appreciate it! I just remembered that I made this comment now, it felt like so long ago after the endless knowledge that I have obtained from the later seasons. And reading back, yeah, I'm pretty proud of myself. But your comment really lightened up my mood, made me feel smart haha. I really needed that right now so thanks!
Gerald's mom seemed to be someone very involved and this was probably "the origin story" of the book that produced animal bones (different to the bone changing book that was left to the library)
To be honest I thought them finishing each other’s sentences was weirdly endearing
I'm guessing the Architect mentioned has probably joined the same cult as that female roommate, and the churches he probably designed for the cult is the same church that priest held a sermon and ate the students.

So ... First time listener here and from what I pieced together, there's a whole of 13 cosmic entities at play here, each of them an embodyment of a certain fear. They influence certain characters or directly interfere with others, all with the goal to cause fear.
There seems to be a level of interplay between some, whilst others are straight-up hostile towards eachother.
👀
Very, very good for a first listen
I never actually expected to *hear* the delivery men myself!
22:13 "end record- EUAGH! GODDAMNIT! MAHTIN! MAHTIN WHERE DID U PUT THE REST OF THE EXTINGUISHERS? MAHTIN!"
I just vistit the newest comments to see how new listeners try to figure out stuff and I'm proud of you sometimes 😊
Sometimes😂😂
All I have figured out is how much I love Martin
Seeing people predict twists and plots i didnt understand til season 4 makes me feel so stupid ☠️☠️
Okay. Fourteen things. One was fire, one gravity (sky/heights), one was bones (Boneturner/Other book) and just flesh in general maybe (Angela, meat.). "A stranger in the dark I did not know but was sure meant me harm." Sounds like the Anglerfish, and maybe the Not-Graham or the clown doll too. Where was that calliope from? The circus of the Other. Imposters? The med students? Or would they be the bones and body horror stuff?
Then we have Vampires and Werewolves so maybe one of them is the more traditional sense of a monster stalking you through the woods or streets.
There's bugs and spiders, but the spiders ate the worms and spiders aren't insects, so maybe they're two separate things.
Michael and Mike Crew both seem to have a connection to fractals? And possibly schizophrenia? Madness?
Then there's the Piper who seems connected to bloodlust and butchery, and the hospital was a war hospital. Anywhere connected to violent death?
Probably something to do with eyes. Definitely darkness.
The tunnel they entered through made them claustrophobic, and reminded me of lost John's cave.
The Lucas family... well, their entire thing seems to be solitude and loneliness. Maybe also being lost.
I can't think of anything else, but that makes 13. That's all I got for now. (Yes, I have been taking notes after every episode. No, I am not embarrassed by this.)
Dang! You picked up on a LOT for your first time through! Well done! 😃
Yep, very good job for this early on.
Wow, A+ effort lol. I definitely did not pick up on it this well my first time through

You literally got all of them right? How?? Im genuinely so impressed, minus the names its just all the fears. You even got that the web and corruption are separate
@@klbzplb In the spider episode he said that there were worms infesting the building, and that the spiders ate them.
Also, it really wasn't that complicated. It was clear that some of these things didn't get on from the spiders eating worms, from the open eyes in the tomb and the closed eye necklaces, from the fight in the hospital, from Michael helping Sasha.
That meant they were individual things, and when this episode indicated that there were 14 I just looked back at the other episodes and their core themes
i swear i jumped out of my skin when jon said "oh god" at the worms. i ripped my earbuds out and had to rewind, and even the second time on a lower volume i flinched

Mayor Marshmallow There is no “just” to Gerry shenanigans. Gerry shenanigans are the best shenanigans.
@@mrjones2721 you are absolutely right, Gerry is the best at shenanigans
Gerry shenanigans, Smirke’s architecture, and brief cameos from each of the 14. 😉
And unless it was Gerry that scared Alf to death, a very strong presence of the Flesh. Or was that just some kind of trap Leitner had put in to keep people from stealing his books...
@@hhylobates4098 ***spoilers for those not caught up****
.
.
.

.

Technically there's a strong presence of all 14 fears here. Each passageway corresponds to one of them. The one they entered through was The Buried, Gerry went down the Flesh tunnel along with Alf, and they also mention ones with The Vast, The Dark, The Web, The Stranger, and The Desolation. They don't give direct reference to the others, but one can assume they're there as well.
I don't think it was a trap Leitner set, as much as it was just being in the presence of too many Leitners. Robert Smirke's architecture is about balancing the fears, and Leitner used Smirke's work to help contain the books, both here, and later in the building he built specifically for holding them.
My guess is that Alf ended up interacting with a particularly nasty Leitner, probably the one with the mummified hand on it, when Gerry grabbed the animal bone one.
First time listener here and omg I need to go through the transcripts and take notes lmao
Anyways, so there's 13 enteties? Connected to different kind of monsters/phenomena? And some of them like the flesh hive want to kill the archivists for some reason... and then there's Michael who is one of them too but doesn't
Also Gerard knows too much kid please talk to us tell us what's going on ajsjfjdka

MY BOYFRIEND WAS ASLEEP, I FUCKING JUMPED WHEN JONATHAN YELLED
23:05 is martins “I’ll try?”
He’s so cute🥰
The two delivery guys at the end just remind me of the two comic relief characters from pirates of the Caribbean, "ello my poppet".
Made me laugh after I jumped out of my chair when the worms popped up.
So this is the third time we've come across shelves packed with books and only one survives.
The first was in 'Across the Street' and Graham's note books, all of which were destroyed except one. It just repeats the same sentence over and over again - something like 'Don't stop watching'. However, just because one book only had one sentence, it doesn't mean that others weren't a bit more verbose.
The second was in 'Schwarzwald' and I assume that the book - in Arabic, but it might have been misidentified - ended up in the hands of the founder of The Magnus Institute but we never find out what it says.
And now this book, written in Sanskirt, which sheds bones like other old books might drop dust.
I have no idea what any of this means, but Mr. Simms question of whether the books remains in the tunnels were books that Leitner stored there, or where he got his more esoteric books is an interesting one.
Because, if Mr. Magnus was taken by the book he (might have) received from his German noble friend, maybe he created the Institute to FIND more books, and thus is on the same side as Mr. Leitner (i.e. they are both evil) but most of the people at the institute don't know that.
As well, I found it interesting that in 'The Dreamer' the shelves were covered in blood / tentacle juice. And in 'The Hive' the nest is described as 'a large pulpy mass' and the institute is infested and has so much paper...
I'll be able to get to episode 40 before bed. I just hope I don't end up listening to season 2 to find answers to questions it raises.
Almost forgot - a severed hand, just like the owner of the original house in 'Burned Out'.
OHOHOHO IT'S ALL COMING TOGETHER!!! * rubs hands in excitement *

When I started hearing the worms before Jon did I was like "OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT"
Im convinced that Jarred is some kind of embodiment of a dark force that wants all if the books collected. Its just his strange ability to know where the books are, how to get them, and disappearing almost as suddenly as he appeared. He's just... Almost uncanny. Throughout the statements where he has aopeared he just seems so detatched from our plane, like he doesnt belong here or something in him shouldnt be here
okay at 22:13 I flinched when he was like "end recor- AH GOD DAMMIT" XD
I WAS EXPECTING THE YELL BUT I WASNT READYYY-
SPOILERS SPOILERS pls don't read this comment if this is your first listen through!!
for my caught-up buddies (hang on in there for season five folks): was this intended as the earliest big clue we got with regards to the nature of the tma universe? like, am I to understand that what was stumbled across here was Smirke's attempt at 'balancing' the entities like he believed was possible? I mean, fourteen corridors, 'balance and fear', with references to one that induces 'claustrophobia', one that 'felt like I was about to fall into it', one 'so dark our torches didn't seem to reach more than a few feet inside'- that's the buried, the vast, and the dark, right? then they chase gerry down a tunnel that must belong to the flesh- 'the walls seemed oddly slimy... I put my hand onto the floor to push myself up and it came away faintly tinged with red', where he finds mary's leitner, so there's confirmation that that was of the flesh also. alf by all intents and purposes seems to have died of fear!!! 'a pile of paper completely covered in cobweb', 'a stranger I didn't know but was sure meant me harm', 'my skin burning, hot, choking on smoke down there in the dark'???? i'm losing my MIND with this damn podcast this is so incredibly clever??? like it was all there so early on I cant believe how little I thought about this episode on first listen????? intriguingly, the episode in which jon is first given the clues to the truth of his situation is also the episode the web first directly intervenes- unless i'm mistaken what's delivered at the end here is the table, or the lighter, or both- I don't remember. what does it all MEEEAAAAAN
At least you try to figure it all out haha
