Aww, the ashes Martin gave Jon were real!
... at least he thinks they are. 👀
This sounds like he gave him a really sweet, romantic gift but its just ashes. Honestly find it kind of funny.
@@-theblackbumblebee-8067 Sure but it's the ashes of the thing that hunted and nearly killed him, while he was paranoid it might still be alive. After Martin has every reason to be just as traumatised. It's super the thought that counts.
@prideling yeah i know that, i just find it ironic that ASHES would be martin's first gift to Jon. Its not an item that is usually associated with romance and this comment highlighted the intent. Nowhere but whithin this universe would that be considered sweet.

Me: "FU-"
So incredibly true
Remember that Jane mentioned ants in her old... uhh... workplace :S even before she encountered the Hive, she was still "marked" or something...
"there must have been thousands" sir that is just a few handfuls of ants
"Thoudands of ants" is just like, a small infestation. There are always more ants than you think.

Right, but I don't want my hands to be full of ants. I want ants away from me. Away.
The whole easily catching fire aspect sounds like Trevor's vampires.
I was already thinking the flesh hives were like the larvae of parasitic wasps and the vampires or shapeshifters were a mature state

Huh... Jane was so quick to disregard her landlord but he clearly knows more about what's going on than she did...
Hearing Jonathan Sims talking about getting a goodnight's sleep, and missing days like that really choked me up. 😢
I love how the landlord had nearly no hope that the Exterminator would work out, but called him anyway, just to maybe avoid setting himself on fire to solve the problem properly.
That's as if Montauk had decided to call the plumber and electrician to fix his problems with the lightbulbs and the foul water, before he finally decided that serial killing was the answer.
I almost regret that the Jane Prentiss entity was incinerated, because she was such a great antagonist - a truly horrific abomination and a tragic figure at the same time.

WORM WIFE
I'm calling it now, the random appearance of the cobwebs in the tunnels came from one of these one person hives.
At time of writing this I've only listened up to this episode. I don't think that is the case. The spiders have a clear distain for the worms, and can easily exist outside of a host. Worms always need a host nearby, and the fact we don't get randos getting infected by the worms just wandering implies they die quickly without a hive nearby to shelter them. The only other spiders we have met also simply killed their target without infecting them. I feel it has something to do with those spider-human husks mentioned by the policewoman's partner some episodes ago, though considering that individual made it out ok implies the spider things are more occupied ironically doing a spider's job. Controlling the pest population.
WOO WOO love me some Jane Prentiss
I love every part of this fandom. Except that part.
K so Amhurst was flammable and the "wasp nest" looked spongy... According to Trevor's account, these are both features of vampires. If the hive is connected to Amhurst and presumably the mosquitos from Blood Bag, it's possible that vampires could also fit into this somewhere
The vampires are just a bunch of mosquitoes in a trenchcoat, I'm calling it now

Holy shit, it is him!!! I didn’t even realize!!! 😃
Another Mechanism in the Archives!
So that’s now Jonny, Ashes, and Gunpowder Tim, and then The Toy Soldier is in later episodes! 😁
TheNitpickChick I had no idea either until I saw the spreadsheet lmao (don’t tell anyone but I cannot for the life of me tell that it’s him even though I know, he lowkey just sounds like another generic British white man in this... and I’m usually pretty good at distinguishing voices............)
Sam Lueke Honestly, same. lol
When I really listen, I can hear some recognizable parts to his voice here and there, but overall he sounds pretty different here than when singing or whatnot. 😄
Wha- .. who?
Nama schu Jonathan Sims (the voice actor, not the character) is also in a band called The Mechanisms. They tell fantastic sci-fi stories through awesome music.
The band plays the role of narrator as a crew of immortal space pirates, and each member has a character that they play.
Jonathan Sims plays Jonny d’Ville, the First Mate. (the closest the crew has to a captain lol)
The voice actor who voices Basira plays the Quartermaster, Ashes O’Reilly.
And the statement giver of this episode plays the crew’s Gunner, Gunpowder Tim. 😊
(The Toy Soldier is another crew member. It’s voice actress turns up in later episodes as a recurring character. 😁)
It’s just really cool to spot these crossover cameos from familiar voices! 😊
the whole time i was listening i was like “GUNPOWDER TIM 😍🥰🥺❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💕💞💓💗💖💘!!!!!”
The idea there are similar hives out there is terrifying.

It was nice to hear that Jon got a good night's sleep due to Halloween hoaxes, of all things.
I'm very glad that the ashes were real xD AND I noticed that Martin is appearing more and more in the investigations for the statements, I'm happy for that. Hope that Jon starts to sleep more, we need more Halloween weeks
As a Mechanisms fan, going back here realizing this is (Gunpowder) Tim is - certainly something /pos
so for the landlord I’m either thinking vampire because of the way he caught fire, or someone related to the pair we saw at the nursing home.
I'd wager that fire cult has to do with it. Man moved his lips when he spoke, he isn't a vampire. That scar and whatever enchantment had to do with it is likely to have much more to do with the fire.
Jon says they wouldn't have worked together, but the Prentiss and friends entomology show would've been a sensation, damnit.
The corrupt tend to find themselves in… toxic relationships
I surely didn't need a more detailed description of the "wasps" nest😨😨 it's so disgusting, I love it.

Never have I ever heard the word "throbbing" as frequently as in the last week following my discovery of this podcast. To be completely honest, I'm not sure I've ever heard it before at all.
A pest control professional of my acquaintance said not calling themselves exterminators had more to do with managing expectations. YOu're never going to permanently get rid of vermin--they always come back and they're always lurking--it's maintenance not a one time job.

i really love the bug-themed episodes, especially the fact that this one was about ants, because for the past three years i've been on-and-off surrounded by ants (i don't tend to leave anything out that would attract them, they're just there, even though i've moved several times). it was fun listening to this episode at 1:30 am as i see ants crawl on my computer screen and feel them crawling up my arms and legs

The more I listen the more I feel like Jon needs to be bolder in recruiting help. This guy went straight from "Agh, weird sick man grabbing me" to "guess I will light him on fire". They need people like this to take on the stuff they are combating. He should also definitely be trying to contact Gerard Kiay or however you spell his last name.
I kind of feel the exterminator's ability to handle bad situations is why Disease Control snapped him up. Disease Control might have its own monster squad for specific situations.
Based on all the interactions with Bugs and the Vampires, if you encounter a Monster? Set it on fire.
Unless the monster is the fire. Then you're fucked.

Well, wait for season 5.
First time listener, so no spoilers please.
Wondering if John Amherst is (kind of) a good guy. Burning the hive... maybe he was actually trying to contain or get rid of whatever was in the nursing home. 🤔
John Amherst didn’t burn the wasp nest. That was Arthur Nolan. John was the ant guy, and the guy from the Ivy Meadows Nursing Home.
And at the nursing home, it’s heavily implied that the mysterious old man and the woman who saved the statement giver were the ones to start the fire there. :)
Okay. Only part of the way through the episode but I cant help but notice the description of the man who got mad at the pest control worker is described very similarly to the man who was “working” at the nursing home that was infected. Just me?
AAAAAAA I WAS RIGHT
My theory from this episode and what we know so far:
The ants' case reminds me the mosquitoes' case. I mean, in both cases we had the creatures eating/drinking the sick fluid (remember how the mosquitoes would go crazy for the blood that was full of diseases?) So, that makes me thing that these two are related, and that person who was the owner of the ant house and was also in the nursing house is a follower or a part of an entity (like how Michael is part pf the spiral entity) that can make people and objects (the ant house seemed sick) sick. Does that mean that this man and prentiss were marked and were working for the same entity? Is the hive entity and the entity that brings sickness the same entity? I can't say yet, I need more data.
The landlord, on the other hand, in prentiss's statement we thought he was just another victim of the supernatural, but what if he was also involved with the supernatural? He was disappointed when the witness came down prentiss's house like he knew already that the hive wasn't killed, even though even our witness didn't know that yet, he only heard the screaming. And then he used a tattoo on him to set the place on fire, making sure the hive would for sure be destroyed. That means that a) he wanted that hive destroyed that day immediately (remember how the pest control guy was the one given the job 'cause he could go right away?) and b) I don't believe he was a member of the fireless flame cult 'cause members of that cult can make people and objects burn by just chanting, they don't need a tattoo to use, and also the fire that the members of that cult bring doesn't harm them (from what we know so far at least), while the landlord of prentiss was found dead. So it's more like he sacrifised himself in order to destroy the hive right away before it could do anything else (like, I don't know, luring someone else again?). So either he was a supernatural fighter, one of the good guys, or he was a pawn of another entity that was against the hive entity. Now, of course, there's also always the chance of him being brought back from the dead from an entity to be used by it too, like with other cases of people being supposedly dead but being seen alive and kicking after their "deaths".
The "Azog" guy burned himself summoning the boiling heat thing, so the fire people aren't always immune.
@@Badficwriter hmm I see, I had forgotten about that at the time I wrote my comment, thanks for the info

Huh, a nice coincidence. I'm listening to this right before Halloween, and Jon brings up it being Halloween week... it is just a coincidence... right?
As it seems with way more that I'd wish cases, I have some experience with ants and wasps infestation of my own. Both of them happened when I was staying at the summer camp 16 years ago.
I think, I've already wrote about the wasps' one in the comments of Nursing Home case, but before our group was moved to the building with wasps' nest in the toilet, we were situated in another, much farther from the centre of the camp building. The were two floors - first one for girls and second one for boys.
At our second day we noticed a cabinet (or nightstand, I'm not sure of the correct name). Me and two other girls decided to look inside and saw, what we later deduced, a stack of towels that were almost completely cowered with ants. We closed the cabinet and haven't opened it ever since. Didn't stop ants from going in *our* rooms, but at least it was just a couple of them per day, instead of the whole swarm that was there.
I got a fucking bed bug removal ad while searching this episode’s wiki. fml

I really don’t see them as Corruption at all. They’re not primarily about filth, disease, toxicity, infestation, etc. Those aren’t the fears they invoke in their victims.
I could maybe see arguments for the Stranger, due to their uncanny nature, or the Web, due to their almost hypnotic influence, but I also don’t quite think those fit either.
While they were never specifically confirmed as such, I’ve always seen them solidly as manifestations of the Hunt. They’re predators, pure and simple. Their whole existence is about hunting prey, and making people feel hunted. They’re only ever referenced in relation to other hunters like Trevor Herbert or in the episode Dead Horse, during the Hunt’s attempted ritual. They’re not Avatars of the Hunt, as they were never human, but they are manifestations of it, in the same way that the Monster Pig was a manifestation of the Flesh.
But that’s just my interpretation of it. ☺️
TLDR; Dang! Gonna need the *big* boot.
