      @@bland9876 Basically, you need a MSDuo to microSD adapter (the ones that take 2 microSD cards are really fragile, the ones with 1 mSD card slot are more robust). Then, you need to figure out how to load custom firmware to the microSD card, to allow you to play PSP roms, PS1 roms, load emulators etc. There's some good guides on CZcams on how to do all this, just watch a couple before you get into that.

    I see people do things like this with old laptops that have broken screens. As long as it has the right port and a system that automatically puts out a signal to any connected monitor, You can turn a screenless laptop into a handy all in one PC.

    • @Stratilex
      @Stratilex Před 2 lety +7

      @pmurph1 Před 2 lety +7

      @@tripletsborn4628 How does it not make sense to turn a DSL with say, a broken hinge or top screen that doesn't work into a GBA for yourself or a friend? Lol. I am a fna of the channel but I saw this video, looked to my left and saw my DSL with broken right hinge and screen bleed on the top. Still technically works but it's just a pain in the ass. I was looking into replacing the screen and what to do with a broken ds hinge but it seemed like a hassle. This doesn't.

    • @tripletsborn4628
      @tripletsborn4628 Před 2 lety +1

      @@pmurph1 it's wasteful, it's dumb because it's a DS so it can't play original Gameboy like a real GBA, and it'd easily be more sensible to sell the busted thing as parts for someone else to use to fix their DS than it is to just waste a good DS instead of repairing it.
      Not even to mention that replacing the shell with a fresh one that has working hinges is probably less of a hassle than removing the broken hinges and going at your DS with glue, plastics, and a Dremel.

    • @asswaterstudios
      @asswaterstudios Před 2 lety +1

      @@tripletsborn4628 it’s really not that crazy. Ds are great systems to mod, and a lot of people have many of them just laying around. You could probably get a broken one for 10$-20$ and then use it as a gameboy. Not sure what’s wrong with that 🤷‍♂️ seems like a win in my book. You can easily get replacement parts and restore the ds if you’d like. Won’t cost much different.

      I've modded a lot of gameboys and honestly for just simply removing things i always keep the soldering iron as hot as possible, just make sure you don't touch other components. I did like 10 gameboy mods with a basic 15 buck soldering iron that didn't even have an adjustable temp.

      230 degrees C is where I keep my iron. Certainly hot enough to get that old Nintendo solder moving. If you are new to soldering watch a tutorial on CZcams.
      Always remember to keep a little solder on the tip of the iron every single time you want to work on the board (keeping a little liquefied solder on your iron helps distribute heat to the joints you want to melt, without it, you'll be lucky if you melt the solder joints on the board)

    it looks really nice but I still HATE the A and B button layout because it is the worst possible orientation if you play games where you hold B to make a running jump with A, I made my own macro using a DS classic I bought for 12 bucks in a terrible shape but still working. I Re-Map the buttons to make both the X and Y to work as Button B, and B and A to work as A. then you can hold both buttons or either one without even moving your thumb sideways and can even chose where you want to have it when you use R1 for example. I made some plastic work to fill the holes and some paint on that, took the touch off and used the upper screen protector to cover the lower screen instead and it fit right over the frame as is. it was a very clean practical mod for what it became, and I did not need to buy any extra parts for it. 12 bucks and some glue and a single salvaged resistor , put one of the speakers on the lower right side and made some holes for it and it was done. it was more work repairing the broken case which all but one screw posts were broken of than the actual mod itself and the classic don´t have the cartridge sticking out either. picture is very decent for GBA games without the digitizer in the way too.

    To clarify, it's actually just called the Game Boy Macro (not "Game Boy Advance Macro"). It's called that because there's already an existing GBA variant called the Game Boy Micro.

    12:30 imo the GBA version of Road Rage still holds up. It may just be nostalgia talking, it was one of my first GBA games, but I always preferred what that game did over the Crazy Taxi GBA game.

    You could always mix the blue and red together to make purple.

    Did you have to solder a resistor that tells the ds that it has the top screen? Or was that black chip the replacement

    Any tips for protecting the ribbon cable for the top screen on ds lite? I seem to keep breaking mine even though I try to be super careful. Any tricks for reconnecting it to the connector during reassembly?

    Would be cool if they made a plastic filler cartridge to fill the DS cartridge slot. You know like when you get those filler cards in laptops SD card slots.

  • @DarthBreh

    You can fill the ds slot with Ultimate Mortal Kombat DS as that uses the bottom screen.

    Would it be possible to move the GBA reader further up the body to get the cart to sit flush with the shell? Maybe removing the DS cart reader to make space seeing as it's not needed? Cool mod either way. Wish I'd kept my old DS Lite with the dead top screen now.

    • @redscience2117
      @redscience2117 Před 2 lety

      Even if you could the carts wouldn't fit in the hole, so you'd have to cut it and make it bigger

    Using Nintendo Switch's speaker for this mod was spectacular. 👌🏾

    I’ve made a few of these as well as gameboy macro xls made from an original ds. I wanted to order one of those boxy pixel faceplates but the postage to Australia was around $95 US plus the cost of the faceplate itself which is ridiculous so I’ve been just 3d printing my own instead, they r still nice but not as good as one of those aluminium ones

    Do they make kits for the OG DS? So you can play Gameboy and color games?

    I recommend buying a EZ-FLASH OMEGA, it comes with a half height shell so it dosen’t stick out on a DS-Lite, it also has RTC and can emulate other Nintendo consoles quite good. 🤓

    That does look super nice. Too bad that transferring Pokémon from gen 3 to gen 4 requires a touch screen, it's mostly the only use I have for my own "game boy macro" (the top screen broke off so I did the mod to be able to use it).

    The thing that holds me back from doing this is you cant do multiplayer or any gamecube connectivity. and the lack of gb and gbc compatibility.
