In today's episode of Retro Renew, we revisit the Game Boy Macro Mod, which is one of my favorite form factors of the Game Boy Advance. This time around we will be using Helder’s Flex Audio Amp which is an all in one package that includes the necessary resistor for the Macro Mod, as well as an audio amp. The achilles heel of the Gameboy Macro was the extremely low audio after performing the mod. So will the Helder Flex Amp solve this issue? Let's find out!
So here's what you will find in this video:

I really wish the psp go would get this kind of attention. I would love a micro SD mod for storage, or third-party batteries.
Had SD storage on PSP for years , buy a memory stick to SD adapter they are around 2.00 pounds from ebay, ahh just realised you said PSP go ,only 16gb internal, that sucks
Go has the smaller memory card, not the memory stick
Get the micro SD card adapter. You'd have to open up the console and install it yourself, buy it does allow for SD storage for your PSP go if you do
The memory cards used by PSP Go are even smaller than micro SD, so there's no room for modding a microSD port in substitution of the one already has.
@@frikifectonotengo6609 it's been done before. requires case trimming to fit it inside though

That intro always gets me.
So glad you like it!!
I hit the like button before it even has time to finish bc I know the quality of the information is already there and I appreciate the great content!
Thank you🙏!
When the beat drops! Get's me all the time
Ikr. It’s one of the few intros I never skip.
I just want to say again for like the tenth time. Your videos have such an amazing professional flair to them. I am always blown away every time I watch one at the absolute high quality of them.
Thank you so much Tense! I can’t tell you how much that means to me! I always try to make the best possible videos I can and will continue to try an make them better and better. Thanks again buddy for the kind words! Cheers!
Agreed. Can't believe the sub count isn't higher yet
Mannnnn, continue to be impressed with your work. You are the perfect blend of This Does Not Compute's modding ability and chillness and My Life In Gaming's production value. We gotta get you to 100k subs and a silver plaque Tito. 2021 goals!
Dude thank you so much TechnoGatsby! It really means a lot to be compared to those guys! They both have amazing channels and they really do inspire me! Cheers my friend!
I love when you are right about to complete the mod and the piano riff starts playing
Thank you Keegan!
I’ll be honest. I’ve been playing mostly Pokémon on mine, and I play with the audio off or headphones anyway. What I do like is that it simplifies everything. You’ve got everything you need in this, and it upgrades and improves the original mod. So now you just solder this little thing in and that’s it, your done. It’s really great. The resister was tough to solder cuz my hands are shaky. I may just have to redo mine. Tho I gotta open it up to fix it, my triggers aren’t working for some reason now lol
any luck fixing the triggers?
Great video. It's really exciting to see these new innovations from the modding community. Even though I'm getting better at soldering, seeing solutions such as this makes it all the more appealing to try it out. I'm definitely going to have to add this to the future projects list.
So glad I’m able to show you these really neat new mods! This is certainly a great project Justin! Cheers buddy!
Idk how you even make so many videos so quickly. It takes me 3 weeks to make a video like this.
With a full time job it’s tough. Takes a lot of planning and some late nights. But to me it’s worth it in the end! I love modding and making videos and sharing them with this awesome community! Cheers Darby!
Excellent video and awesome product. Helder’s stuff never disappoints, so well designed!
with this piece, its a call for me to get the parts together!
great video tito!
Thanks dude! It really is pretty awesome! I think you’ll like it!
This video is so professional and right to the point plus it has modding consoles in it. I'm sold.
the quality of your videos is impressive. You can see the enormous dedication you put into them, congratulations.
Thank you🙏! That really means a lot! I try to make the best possible video I can. Cheers!
Helder is a legend. Since his Gameboy Zero days (with his awesome AIO and retropsu), until all the new goodies he is now making, the design and build quality are outstanding. Too bad his work has been shamelessly been ripped off from so many "BIG" businesses of the scene.
His work is great! From the batteries to his flex amp mods! Great stuff!
@@MachoNachoProductions indeed. I wanted his megabatt batteries also but thats a no go for Europe atm :(((
I just bought a GBA SP battery from Helder and it is fantastic. So much better than the junk batteries on eBay.
@@DaRk_DoG zedlabs carries them, and they ship to Europe as they're located in the UK.
@@Crynok thank you mate, just checked their site. Cheers!
I said it once before and I say it again, the editing skills is top notch!
Thank you so much dude! Means a lot!
Warm and fuzzy is the best definition of when a mod works and it looks great!
Very cool mod addition to the GBM :)
Thanks Tito
Haha totally agree Jesus! You’re most welcome buddy! Cheers!
Always really appreciate the work you put into your videos. Great entertainment and source for new ideas and information!!
Keep it up. Greetings from Germany. :)
Thank you so much Thomas! Will do buddy! Cheers!
Clean and nice as usual. Only thing I've been doing when tangling with the rubber covers on the DS and the SP is put a drop of IPA and let it soak for a few seconds before removing them. This loosens the glue but not permanently so it's easier to work with and can help preventing damage. Same process when putting them back on.
Nice! Thank you for the tip! Cheers!
Oh man this looks so cool! Sadly I don't have the tools or the soldering skills needed lol. I'll stick to emulation on my Steam Deck for now, but keep up the great content!
Okay, so when I first watched this tutorial I missed the part where the resistor was already on the flex board and so when I was ordering the parts I went back and watched some of the older tutorials where you had to solder the resister in separately. I was pretty nervous about that but went ahead and got all the parts. When everything came in today I saw how small those things are and just about had a heart attack but then rewatched this video and when I heard that the resister is part of the amp board I just about fell over in my chair! I literally yelled out, "Oh thank gawd!" Thank you thank you thank you!
Your videos make me feel warm and fuzzy inside also. Great job, Tito. I already did the Gameboy Macro mod but this is making me want to do another one. How hard would it be to undo the mood I already did and use the flex amp PCB?
Thank you bro! So glad you are enjoying my videos! Means a whole lot to me! It’s very easy! That what I did. Just desoldered the resistor and speaker and remove the residual solder with solder wick and you’re good to go! Cheers buddy!
I probably will never actually be doing this mod but I still watched it til the end lol, great vid!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
oh nice! Def going to get one of these for my Boxy pixel Macro as the audio is quite anemic. Thanks Tito!
You’re most welcome Joseph! The volume is now super loud with the amp!
Damn I need this!
Have you ever made a video on basic tools needed for modding? I'd like to put myself into this and I have actually no tools at all so I could use some advices here ^^
The helder flex amp is the ONLY way to do the macro mod! Super easy to do even for my shaky hands, and his customer support is hands down the best out there, helped me diagnose my issue within 2 hours of emailing him. I'm glad I saw this video recommending it! Thank you Tito for the excellent videos!
This is a great video. Well done and informative. Something to note if you are planning on using the DS Lite faceplate you'll need some 30 gauge kynar wire to extend the speaker over to where the stylus used to be.
For the price of the helder's flex amp it felt like an easy decision to build my gb macro with it. Though, I ran into an issue where everything was working fine including the headphones, but no sound came out of the speaker. I checked all of my solder points and that didn't solve the issue. It turns out quite a few people on the gameboy macro subreddit have run into this with the helders flex amp and there doesn't seem to be a decent solution. I'll be troubleshooting mine and will post here if I find anything.
Just wanted to say thank you for doing this mod, and sharing the information with us. I recently built a Game Boy Macro that has audio issues - crackling/distorted at high volumes - and was seeking a solution. Then I saw this video, and think Helder's amp will do the trick! I've got a couple amps on order now (I'm planning to build a second Macro), and I'll let you know how it goes.
You’re most welcome buddy!
Hi again! I got the amp from Helder and installed it today - it ended up great! Between installing the amp and adding some kapton tape under the speaker (a step I overlooked in my initial build), the audio is now crisp, clear, and LOUD. His amp design and your video made it super easy to understand what to do, and the video was easy to follow along with as I went.
I will say I had some bumps along the way, but that was due to my skill level - I'm new to soldering, so this was a great learning experience. And, my screwups (due to a slightly unsteady hand) were nothing a little solder wick and IPA couldn't clear up, so: no problem in the end.
Cheers to you once more for making such a great tutorial!
Sick!!
I’ll get one for sure
Awesome video. I may have to make one out of a broken ds to go along with my gameboy micro. It could be cool to have a micro and macro.
Great video Macho. On another note my neo geo backlit has arrived. Going to watch your ngp video and follow the instructions
Thank you! Nice, that’s a great kit!
Love your vids Tito. Your guide was essential for me to complete the Gamegear mod. If you ever run out of things to mod. You might consider doing a video on the Arduboy. It got a mod chip add on a few months back.
Thank you nonlegend! That means a lot to me bro! Will definitely have to check out the arduboy! Haven’t heard of it before. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions The arduboy is a micro handheld that has a community of developers who share free games. The original Arduboy could only hold 1 game at a time. The add on lets the device hold over 200 games.
2:23 -> You got a type there: It's not a 331 Ohm resistor, it's 33 * 10^1 = 330 Ohm, since the last digit just says how many zeros you have to add (just for clarification for viewers who might not know)
Purely by coincidence I ordered Macro parts from BoxyPixel the day you uploaded this haha
Nice!
This is by far the best channel when it comes to retro gaming
Thank you so much! 🙏. Means a lot, cheers!
This is a great video, I would love they add a back cover for the macro mod so the DS slot stays hidden.
Great video!
How does this amp affect the battery life?
I'm not interested in Game Boy Macro, but your videos are so professional and well done that I've to see it anyway! :-D
Thank you Dario! Really appreciate buddy!
Love what you did here, This looks like a fantastic project, probably going to order the parts. The one thing holding me back is my lack of experience with soldering. Would you recommend this or a different project, like one of the GBA IPS installs for someone with ZERO soldering experience?
I know this is an old comment but I've been thinking about making this my first soldering project too. I'm desperate to raise this DS up to a new glory
The fact that this mod has the register built in is incredible that was my biggest concern with how small it is
just waiting for all the pieces to be back in stock... seems to be the story for so many things these days!
Totally, wish it wasn’t like that. Best of luck! Cheers!
This is an amazing mod and I would love to use this in my macro💯!
I wish I had money to do some of these mods..or the ability to solder..well done all of your mods are amazing, and straight fwd
I wish the Boxy Pixel faceplate had an option to add a dowel light rod. They look so cool!
Here is some news since I've not seen it addressed anywhere else. If you received the revision 1.1 of the flex amp (version shipped in batch after this video) there is a design flaw where the sound is muted when you press right on the D pad. This was fixed in their new design but the v1.1 can be modded with 1 jump wire and a small piece of kapton tape to fix it.
Great vid! Definitely will be trying this out, thanks. Quick question:
When using a full-size GBA cartridge (rather than something like the EZ Flash used in the vid), will the game extend farther out than the bottom of the console? I really like the flush look of the macro even when there's a game in it. :)
12:18 Totally agree. Still waiting for a GBC screen that has an OSD menu but only connects with the ribbon cable. :P
Awesome!
Great video as always Tito! I think I'm gonna have to attempt the macro mod for a friend's birthday gift, I'm sure they'll love it! I was wondering, I had been poking around looking for usb c mods for the gameboy color to compliment the new ips q5 osd isp kit, but I haven't found any dedicated guides or commonly done mods for it. Do you have any thoughts on a usb c mod for the gbc?
That would make an amazing gift! You are a great friend! I am thinking we will see a usb-c rechargeable mod for the gbc in the near future! Stay tuned!!
They really should have done this for the NDS as it had all the hinge issues even more so than the lite and would be a better unit to use for just advanced gaming in my opinion of course. either way very cool and great video.
Now we need an amp for a regular ds lite!
It is a beautifully crafted piece , no doubt.
I think I will be making one just for the novelty of its aesthetics even though I still haven’t found a crispier image than the one offered by the ips v2 kit on the gba sp. Which one is your favorite way to play gba on the go ? Agb, sp, unhinged or macro ?
The pros of the macro is just how thin it is compared to everything else (I think it’s even a bit thinner than the micro). Plus I really like the horizontal layout. The unhinged is just beautiful to look at and it has an IPs screen. I’d say both are great! Cheers bro!
Helder is killing it!
Really interesting. Im still playing with the thought of doing some sort of macro mod with my ds.
The thing that would interest me the most tho, is, would it be possible to make a gamecuber-controller-port mod on a ds lite?
Thanks for this great video? Big Fan.
I made this mod, and I've noticed that it only works with a game inserted. It's not taking me to the main screen. Should I install the 330-ohm resistor? The flex amp takes place where the resistor was in past mods.
Hey man, I’m a huge fan of your channel. I follow a lot of your in depth tutorials on modding. I was recently trying this mod (gameboy macro). I completed it and The system boots up fine and plays games. But my sound quality is terrible. From the moment you turn it on you hear a high piercing sound followed by crackling and static while the audio plays.
Do you have any suggestions of what I might be able to do next? Should I just replace the speaker? I do have a second replacement speaker.
Thanks for your time. I appreciate it.
Really hope modders can do a glass screen lens for the original new 3ds black and white models
amazing 😍
Great video! new sub for me!
Just to add as a pretty small downer to the mod, if you don't line the PCB up the first time, it looks like that PCB could only handle one or two fixes with an iron. Again its a very small down, and mostly for beginners to worry about. Would the full manufactured version handle the heat better??
Thank you so much for the sub Allen! The flex pcb handles heat pretty well. Also good to make sure the iron temp is not too high since these are small components. The full production version will be very similar to this one. Cheers!
Not gonna lie, this is really dope. I mean, wow. It honestly makes me want to get into this stuff! Lol
Yeah, I ordered 1 of the 20 with the "defect" helder is making it right. I ordered a one off glossy black faceplate from boxy as well as teal. So, I will be doing two eventually.
Nice! I may pick one up too if any are left!
Will the macro flex amp work on the DS Phat?
(Impressive Video. Keep up the good mods)
Thank you! Unfortunately it won’t work for the Phat. It’s designed just for the Lite. Cheers!
I think I might tackle this now. I have had a broken DS light for a while. I think it needs a new battery though
Hey Tito! Did you desolder the original resistor and solder suck any of the original solder points from the first mod? Awesome video as always and I will be ordering this mod tonight!
Yep I desoldered the old resistor and speaker and then used solder wick to remove any residual solder.
So glad you enjoyed the video buddy! It’s a great mod!
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks man! Really appreciate all the helpful communication. Have a good one!
I'm running an iphone speaker that pumps volume up through the old ds card slot. Sounds better than the typical back facing solo speaker but I think I will likely upgrade it with this mod for the audio mixing in particular, once the kit is available again that is.
It should be available very soon, if not by today. Cheers Ryan!
Hey Tito I did this mod yesterday and I love it , but do you have a mod for the switch screens ? please let me know and Thanks
I don't thank's you... I want to mod every Game Boy Advance I have and make a GB Macro 🤣.
Like many I discover your channel with the 2nd GB Macro a year ago and I going to repeat myself, but you do a wonderfull job and you are a great ambassador for the Modding communnity.
Thanks 🤘.
Thank you so much Ace Bunny🙏! That really means a lot to me. I always appreciate your comments! Cheers!
"Becareful not to lose the springs" *My spring goes flying across the room*
The flex mod reminds me of a mod chip I installed in my GameCube a few years ago. Just drop it in place, drop solder into the holes indicated, and you're off to the races.
How'd you manage to close the DS Lite without breaking the on/off switch? That became such a problem for me that I wound up soldering in a button to take its place.
Please keep updated on the release
I hit the bell, and I never hit the bell.
If l wanted to use the original shell and make a Gameboy Macro Neon with an LED and an acrylic tube where would you have to solder on the LED? Would you have to take the resistor off the Helder PCB and solder the LED in its place?
I been dragging my feet on soldering in my switch speaker to my gba macro. Now I will
Intro music is awesome
Thank you Alvin! Glad you enjoy it buddy! Cheers!
i'm curious how this may affect the battery. the original mod (single resistor) eats battery faster than normal ds lite usage in my tests.
It's so cool how GBA games actually look good on a DS screen, and aren't being upscaled to the screen's resolution like DS games are on a 3DS by default.
Grazie Tito, like and big hello from ITALY 🙏👍🤜🤛 ciao, grazie and stay safe mate
Thank you so much! 🙏 Cheers buddy! Stay safe!
Love doing Macro Mods! Have done around 5 so far! My only issue is the faceplate's or design - wish i could get a Boxy Pixel Faceplate but its just out of my price bracket
True they are expensive. But be in the look out. Sometimes he runs sales or discounts if there is a slight blemish on faceplate. I think he has some on discount right now. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions will definitely keep a look out. They are too notch though. Must commend the craft.
Gonna do this but with a plastic faceplate!
So excited. I was able to find a broken DS lite really easily! And in black!
Most expensive thing will be the EZ-FLASH Omega DE, but I have a single GBA game to play until I'm ready to buy.
Nice dude!
I can't get the replacement switch speaker to work well. The speaker wire is so thin, hard to strip. Now sound cuts in and out, and mostly static.
Nice vid.
Wouldn't be more ergonomical to use the two upper buttons instead? Would it be possible?
I think the DS defaults to the a and b buttons. I’m sure it could be modded to switch. I think it’s a pretty decent location, I haven’t had any issues. Cheers!
Wow Tito! This is fantastic! Sounds great! I’m going to get one!!
Awesome! You’re going to love it! Cheers buddy!
I want to download this intro music and use it for my alarm clock
I have a question, could you do this mod and combine it with the Rhotronix NDSTV V3.45 to have a Gameboy Macro/Single Screen DS with TV out? or is there something that conflicts and would lead to some compromise or otherwise completely prevent the combo?
Maybe you could use you contacts to suggest to Rhotronix, Boxy Pixel and Helder to all work together to make a combo mod that works together and has a face plate explicitly designed to make it easier to fit all the components inside (and maybe even allow for a dedicated video out port/s, I did see on Twitter that Rhotronix was looking into HDMI output options)
Another great video. I just did a GB Macro mod and was thinking the sound is the worst part of it, what can I do about that? And as if you read my mind here's a solution, thanks mate.
Thanks Graham! So glad I was able to help you out! Cheers buddy!
The one downside I always so with the DS is that it lost multplayer functionality for GBA Games, would love to see a GBA Link port mod for DS/GBA Macros. Hopefully someones working on it.
Is it possible to still use this while also putting on an led to the same points the resistor goes to? I don't know much about this kind of stuff
One question I have on this one is how to strip the wires on the nintendo switch speaker. I got mine from iFixIt but it comes with the clip in for the switch on it. What do you suggest for stripping those tiny wires?
just to make sure do you put the touch stabilizer ribbon cable back in?
As we say in Portuguese "Impecável!" 🙂
Totally agree!
Impecável é dizer pouco top top
Can you find a way to implement the link cable next?
I have seen guides on installing dedicated L/R speakers. Will this work with that?
Ive done this yes, but honestly not too well I did get rid of the the parts what holds the uh, hinge and I accidentally lever of what turns on the ds, so I got the tools, and fixed it, and i found the hinge part, and I unscrewed it and stuff and screwed it back in and stuff, the the battery pack, and then tested it out, and well it worked, ( well it should anyways, and Srry if I accidentally said sum stuff wrong ,:D.)
Now I said a mouthful,
The only downside is no backwards compatibility with the gbc and dmg
I just ordered the helper flex cable. How long does it usually take to get?
Looks like this mod will be way easier than the amp boxy pixel sells as an add on with the gameboy macro I damaged all of the speaker ports and had to end up using the headphone jack port for the solder points. It worked fine but the amp remains on unless you disconnect the dummy headphone jack that must be inserted to allow power through the amp.
Yup, it is way easier
I fished a DSi XL from the electro trash yesterday, and went back for the charger today.
It charges, but the bottom screen only blinks shortly when I turn it on. The two ribbon cables are pulled out of the upper screen, and hang outside loosly.
Is this normal when the top screen is disconnected? Must I just get a resistor soldered in?
Do you experience a little popping noise of sorts when turning on the Macro w/ Helder? Everything works well on mine (except the R trigger is sticky for some reason and requires a harder press to register - no amount of iso and inspection has gotten me closer to resolution) besides this weird little pop when powering on the console.
Thanks!
The pop is normal. I think even unmodified DS consoles make the pop when turning off.
The same mod for the DS XL would be great, I still got one with a broken top screen.
That exists dude
Great Vid!!! I have built a Macro following your previous tutorial and I love it. I got used to the weak audio but definitely will consider the upgrade! Thanks man 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
You’re most welcome buddy! So glad my videos are helpful! Cheers!
I may have missed it, but if im installing this into an already modded macro do i need to remove the previously installed resistor?
Hey Tito, Great video. I just gave this exact mod an attempt. This was my first time trying any sort of mod that involves sodering, and I followed the steps you provided. After I put everything together, it does not power on. When I hit power, the little green indicator light comes on, the screen flashed white and then shuts down. I opened it back up, made sure the ribbon cable was fully connected, but still does the same thing. Any assistance here would be greatly appreciated.
U ever solve it bc I’m having similar issue
Hi when I installed everything and tried turning it on to test the flex amp started smoking when I connected the battery and now it will turn on flash white the shut off.
Also now there is a burning smell
can u do psp mods showing how to put high capacity battery and charging it to change with usb type c
