- Converting the Nintendo DS Lite into a Game Boy Macro system used to be a daunting task because of the extensive modification needed for the DS Lite shell.
A company called Boxy Pixel now offers a faceplate that is made of high quality CNC machined aluminum that eliminates the need to modify the existing DS Lite shell. All that you need to do is a little soldering and be able to disassemble and reassemble the Nintendo DS Lite.
The Gameboy Macro Mod used to be a very challenging modification to do, especially if you wanted good results. Now with Boxy Pixel's offering, the DIY community now has an option to get fantastic results!
Boxy Pixel also offers a glass screen lens for this mod. I did not have the opportunity to install one for this video but it looks fantastic! Link to the glass Game Boy Macro screen lens can be found below.
Combining this mod with the EZ Flash Omega flash cart (Link below) makes for a great portable way to play all your favorite Gameboy Advance, Gameboy/Color and NES games all on a single device!

Hey man! I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I have a really good idea for a case mod. What if someone made a new bottom assembly that was extended to be longer. That way, gba cartridges wouldn’t stick out like they do on the DS Lite. The main reason I use my DS phat is because it is more comfortable to play gba games on (along with the better screen response times.)
That would be awesome! Not a fan of the gba games sticking out the bottom on the DS lite. Great idea Shockey Wren!! Cheers buddy!
Would you be able to use less U.V light, it makes the whole thing seem a bit TOO vibrant, and hard to see the true colors
Fun fact: This is 1 of only 2 of his videos to NOT have his logo in the top left corner, who here can remember what the other video is :)
Wow, I always couldn’t unsee the “DS Macro” as just the bottom screen of a DS Lite, but that faceplate reaaally fixes that. Looks soo clean too. Tito is such an awesome name by the way!!
Haha, totally agree! The faceplate does wonders! And thank you!! Cheers @Lana!
Tito is great leader of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Great sequencing, smooth camera work, and fantastic narration! One of the clearest tutorials we've seen! Thanks!
Katherine Schilling thank you!!!
Congrats on the production level man!
Thank you Felipe! Cheers!
First time watching one of your videos and I am super impressed with the quality of the editing and everything. The sequence at 4:44 is simply amazing. I had to rewatch it several times just to take it all in. What an awesome job!
Thanks HurstGutsy! I really appreciate it! Glad you found the channel! If you want to help me out, please share this with other groups or communities. I’d really appreciate it. Also, let me know what type of content you’d be interested in to see in the future. Cheers buddy, thanks again!
Wow i havent seen THIS being done by every gameboy youtuber recently, Love the original content and creativity, truly what youtube is about. Keep it up
Thank you Eric! Cheers!
Wow! That is a beautiful mod! LOVED how you used super glue to mute the light a little bit -- BRILLIANT. Your camera work for the sequence was super clear and your following remarks on where one can find more detailed instructions is perfect for those who need a little more handholding. Loved your honesty about the con regarding the cartridges sticking out but love your offer of the solution in the form of the Easy Flash Omega ☆ All in all a great channel. I am subscribed and can't wait to see more of your videos, Tito!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I am so happy you liked the video!
Good stuff! Sometimes having spoken instructions during the sequence can help for those who are trying to do the task at the same time and don't have time to look at the screen and pause it regularly. So having audible instructions along with the visuals can be nice. Subscribed and ready to see more of what Macho Nacho Productions has to offer!
Thank you Futago! That’s a good very point. I have been thinking that some spoken instructions would be a good addition to the mod sequences. I will look to incorporate that into my next video!
Macho Nacho Productions or subtitles at the very least
Nice and tight soldering. So satisfying!
Have to say you deserve way more subs holy moley!. Such a great vid loved every sec of it!
Thank you so much 🙏
That's amazing dude! Congratulations from Italy :)
I’m grateful for your guide/review. I just purchased all of the pieces to make this mod and am extremely excited. Doing a metallic blue version with the Blue Aluminum front from Boxy Pixel and the Metallic blue back and buttons from ZedLabs. I’m can’t wait to see how it all turns out
I’m so glad you found the video helpful! The blue version looks so awesome! If you have any questions please let me know!
nice description...very detailed. hope ur channel takes off, ur very likeable and thorough with your explanations ! cheers!
Thank you! That means a lot to me! I’m glad you enjoyed the video dude! Cheers!!
I liked the montage its why I subscribed lots of other people doing long detailed stuff pluss the description part at the end was plenty informative.
What a good looking mod! One I would love to try in the future, I just really need to practice my soldering 😬
With a little practice I’m sure you can accomplish this mod! I’d recommend practicing soldering and desoldering components on an old non-working PCB. And if you ever have any questions please feel free to let me know! I’m happy to help in any way I can!
First time watching a video from this channel. Holy crap. Sickest retro games video introduction I've ever seen. Wow. Dope.

Very nice!
Really quality content for someone with a low sub count. Think i'll stick to converting from a DS Lite to the Macro using the original shell seeing as $54 + shipping fee is a bit too expensive in my opinion.
Really well put together video dude :)
Thanks Joey Does Tech! Really appreciate it man! There are some new Macro shell options floating around, I saw some 3D printed Macro shells on eBay which look pretty good that I want to try out also. Cheers buddy!

Dude thank you! That means a lot and I’m glad you like the channel! More videos to come very soon!
One possible idea to deal with the letter boxing issue would probably be if the shell was remade to fill in the rest of the screen, or include a glass lens to serve the same purpose. it wouldn't be the best option but it's the only one i can think of
Great point @Arlisbloxer05! If you check out my newer Game Boy Macro video, I install a custom glass screen lens that does take care of the letter boxing issue. Boxy Pixel sells it too! Cheers!

Pro: looks great Con: too expensive for a faceplate
It is on the pricey side. There are some nice alternative turning up on eBay. Cheers
You can get rid of the letterbox if you purchase the glass gameboy macro screen from boxy pixel
Thank you for the comment! This is something I should of mentioned in my video. I put a link to Boxy Pixel’s glass screen lens in the description and should have mentioned that it solves the letter boxing. Thanks again!!

Tito literally means uncle in my country
You dont speak country, you speak language
Uncle Tito -> Uncle Uncle
I love how there are all these people in the comments on how this is easy but I don’t even know how to take apart a Xbox controller
Outstanding! Where i can listen that coll music in background?
A friend of mine made the music! Link to his website is in the description. I also get some music from epidemic sounds. Cheers!
Looks very nice and clean, but I think it has a big 3rd con, and it has to do with the fact that it doesn't have Link Cable capabilities, but that's due to the nature of the DS itself.
That’s a very good point! I hadn’t thought of that.👍
Amazing mod
Thank you ttvbigboibee! So glad you like it! Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions you should do a video on replacing the dry battery cells in old gameboy games so they can save progress again
You read my mind!
You should just do both sometimes I like to watch the fancy stuff then somtimes I just want to learn how to do it.
Hey Trace! I actually made a detailed instructional video on the channel. Check it out when you get a chance! Cheers dude!
I wonder if Boxy Pixel is interested in making a shell to make a Gameboy Macro XL
old video - I know. However some comments. IPS vs AGS101 - not obvious as some games look superb on IPS but I agree - some games look better on AGS-101. But again - only a handful of games look better on AGS101. I have both sitting next to each other now. The rechargeable bit is out of date but you know this. You want USB-C now which I believe is available as well. I've subscribed anyway - good stuff!
Hey Nick! Thank you for the comment and the sub! Usb-c would be a great mod! May need to look into that! Cheers!
Interesting
Great video! Do you know if there's an option like this for the DS phat?
Thank you Supermang! I’m really glad you liked the video! Unfortunately, at this time, Boxy Pixel does not make a macro faceplate for the DS phat😔. I am hoping that maybe in the future this could be an option, it would be awesome to have a metal macro phat!!!
@@MachoNachoProductionsThanks for the reply and yes it definitely would!
This is great, but the DS lite’s screen is starting to show its age. Would be great to have a new IPS display to slip in there
It looks great, but I really don't like those backwards slanted B and A buttons. I guess there's no workaround when using an original DS Lite (at least I couldn't do it on mine), but since one is already opening and modding the handheld, wouldn't there be a way to rewire Y and B to work as B and A respectively?
I guess you'd need a different shell as well, but that button layout issue is what keeps me from trying this mod (or playing GBA games on the DS Lite altogether).
Thanks you The Duck Cave! That would be a pretty neat mod. It would require cutting some traces and patch soldering some wires to the traces to reconfigure the button layout. Definielty not an easy mod. I think the shell could theoretically be modified to accommodate the button layout but that would also be difficult without the right tools. Thank you for the comment! Cheers!
Personally prefer the slower paced tutorial style. Cool mod.
Check out my other macro video. It's slower paced. Cheers!
Now you can play those nsmb mini games
Thats true! I wonder if there are any other DS games that only truly need the use of the bottom screen. I think resident evil deadly silence may be one as well. I’m sure there’s a list out there! Thanks for the comment!
I wonder if there's a way add a 2nd screen and ds functionality to this build...
I got mine going but the ride side of my screen sinks a bit lower than the other side. Has anyone else experienced this? Short of adding tape or anything to flatten it out, do you recommend a more elegant solution?
How reliable is the saving on that Omega thing
can you still play nintendo ds games on it, like for e.g. castlevania order of ecclesia?
I would like to see an alternative to the aluminum faceplate.
Agreed! I wish there were more options available, too. The aluminum faceplate is there easiest currently and it works so well. The other option is to modify the original faceplate, but that’s super difficult unfortunately 😔.
Only reason i am asking is i am thinking of doing the mod to my ds lite but where the speaker would go i was thinking of putting it where the ds cardreadr was.
Genus mod. Definitely the best looking gba out there
That face plate price though smh
Does anyone wish Nintendo created this console? It looks like a brand new GameBoy console that has never been touched.
Perfeito!! like!!
Thank You very much, JRN jr!
Nice vid! During modding you should of did voiceover explaining process in detail... actually in your future vid you do so🤓
Thanks onasazi! Yep, you found the video I was going to reference. Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions it’s mainly you and SpawnWave that made me into this Gameboy Macro modding crazed! 🤣
And your production is very sleek! One of the best of CZcams! You have to get more subs!!
onasazi thanks man! Really appreciate that! Help me spread the word, and share my videos if you can, that’ll really help me out a lot. Thanks again! Cheers!l buddy!
onasazi haha! I’m a huge fan of SpawnWave! That’s how I get my news for current video game events. Cheers!
Could I bridge the two point without using a capacitor or will it fry it?
Lol I love when they make things we can't. Go ahead and try and find the 330ohm resistor
What game is that in the end 10:50? That can't be a GBA game, right?
Someone really needs to make a shell that is slightly larger on the bottom so GBA carts can sit flush, it wouldn't be that difficult.
That would be nice for sure! When the cart sticks out, it’s a real eye sore. I think the only difficulty may be what to do with the volume slider?
You can get an EZ Flash omega and they have a flash cart that fits flush
You could buy an empty DS game cartridge off eBay and put it into slot 1, so it fills the space on the back.
Very true! That’s a great suggestion! Thanks Unsyncable!
@@MachoNachoProductions No problem! Great videos!
Thanks man! Appreciate it!
Just rip the top screen off and it will still work. But it will have no speakers unless you have headphones
Hi !
I have a little question :
How is it possible that GBA cartridges do not exceed the DS Cartridge Port ? (there is Metroid Zero Mission in this video for exemple)
Thanks
Hi FSH Iguchi! Thank you for the question. You are correct. All GBA games will stick out of the bottom of the DS. In the video I review the EZ Flash Omega which is a product that let you put GBA roms on it and allows you to play GBA, NES and Game Boy games. The EZ Flash Omega is smaller than the traditional GBA cartridge which allows it to sit flush with the DS console. If you watch the video towards the end you will see how it looks. Thanks again for your comment and consider subscribing to the channel! Let me know if you have any more questions!
@@MachoNachoProductions Thanks a lot !
They should make a custom back aswell without the slot for the ds game on it...
That would be so awesome!
LEDA2 do meu da lite está rompido. Existe outro ponto pra soldar?
They should make complete shells :)
That would be awesome!
Not sure what to get, a Macro or a gameboy advance modded or a modded psp.
Id give it a try but all I have is a soldering iron and a broken ds, i imagine it would look rough
You'll never know unless you try. If you have any questions about the mod, let me know! Hopefully I can help! Best of luck! Cheers!
Is there an upgrade to the screen? I really want sharp and bright image.
Great question! As of now there is no way to upgrade the DS Lite lcd that I am aware of. I actually think the DS lite screen is quite good, and it’s also original nintendo hardware which is nice. I hope that answers your question. Best of luck! Cheers buddy!
Is there any way to remove the ds reader and move the gba reader up to hold the whole cart
If it is possible, it would be extremely difficult.
please more in depth tutorials

Started watching excited, clicked on site, saw price and dropped out.
just get a advance sp! but, it is still a nice mod!
Haha true! I actually don’t have an SP. I’m planning on getting one soon!! That IPS mod for the SP looks really tempting!
@@MachoNachoProductions That IPS mod has made the price of the SP skyrocket. The old front lit SP used to sell for 25-30$ but now they can easily be double that. It's not really worth converting a AGS-101 so everyone is seeking the old 001.
chamoo232 thanks for this head up! Hopefully I can find one on the cheap! I’m planning to re-shell, so I’ll look for one in rough condition.
@@MachoNachoProductions The best deal you can get would be a 001 with a broken screen. Maybe faulty L and R as well. That's easy to fix. I had a chat with someone who wanted to make IPS SP by buying only the motherboards and new shells since the motherboards can be found for 25-30$. That's not a good idea since you then need to buy a battery, speaker and hinges separately and that brings the price to higher than just buying a whole SP.
chamoo232 thanks for the awesome tips! I’ll keep that in mind when looking for an sp! Cheers!
I would really like one of those metal faceplates, but I wish the design kept the X and Y buttons for SNES emulation. I heard there's at least one emulator that will play SNES games on the bottom screen.
If you have a drill press and the appropriate bits (carbide) you could definitely add holes for X and Y. Some additional filing may be needed for the button guides which could be difficult. Aluminum is a fairly soft metal. The DS may be powerful enough to emulate snes but I’m not aware of any current emulators for the platform. Definitely be interested though!
Would it effect the ds lite if i removed the ds ard reader?
Great question! It shouldn’t. Many modders remove the card reader to add space for an addition speaker in the rear. It’s well documented and definitely possible. Hope that helps Dan!! Cheers buddy!
wish they made the face plate for the original ds
Me too dude! That would be so cool!

Macho Nacho Productions yea I know, mine was more a meme ahah I’m just against this price tags too much exaggerated
I agree, I also wish the prices were cheaper. Have you done the game boy macro mod?
idk why a face plate costs 50$ when a complete shell costs 10. Yeah, the guys cant mass-produce them like big companys, but no way this costs 50. For this price i can get (at least in my country) a GameBoy Pocket and Advance, maybe even an Advance SP, mine cost me about 35.
ok i really dont like how the x and y buttons are gone here
