She was so great in this movie. She really held her own considering they put her with John and Lionel Barrymore, Marie Dressler, Wallace Beery and Billy Burke. All huge veterans at this point. So sad to think of what she would have done and how big her career would have been.
Oh agreed! I think she would have went well into the '50s with her career and to think she could have even helped in the WWII effort here at home with her stardom power.
I like at 1;02 when Marie Dressler is comparing her bracelets against Jeans and the exagerated stop when she told her she had read a book...great stuff!
Those two were dynamite together. This scene was added at the end of shooting and the two actresses apparently enjoyed working together. Marie Dressler certainly had some good things to say about Jean Harlow.
Marie Dresser became a popular film star in her last years. Jean and Marie were friends and there were plans for them to make another film together but it got delayed and sadly Marie passed away from cancer.
Maria Dressler's character was an actress from a time when actress meant "courtesan". She is covered with jewelry from past "admirers". When she is looking at Harlow's furs and jewels she is initiating the action that culminates in final line--basically telling Harlow that she can and will continue to sleep her way to riches--just like Dressler did. The "old school" double take just makes it funnier. BTW--the book was "Brave New World".
Just like she did that exaggerated stop when Harlow mentioned reading a book, I think she was very animatedly noticing her bracelets because she was telling us, the viewers comically, that she's got big rocks! Again, that "silent movie" style of acting.
pure hog wash....MM was a sluuuuut ...connned any man with money..she could not act...read harlows bio...get with the program ...or maybe you love to see selling sex and body over a good movie with a story and some real actors ??? huh huh ...
It's the craziest thing. From a small child I told other children I used to be Jean Harlow. They said who is Jean Harlow? I told them I don't know. At 18 I made my way to Hollywood. I do not believe in reincarnation but I got a car and drove to homes in the Hollywood Hills where I felt I could have lived. I knew the streets. Very weird. I'd like to forget Jean Harlow. Jean Harlow died before I was born. What an exciting life she lived. Who wouldn't miss that!
It is entirely possible you were her in a previous life. You said that you don't believe in it which is fine. Your trip to her old homes may have satisfied her spirit's longing to see those places again. She died suddenly at a young age and may have been waiting for the right person to come along and help her. Your trip helped her and now you can move forward too. Never forget it. just store the memories away for another time when you are ready to think about it.
I've always thought Jean was a natural. Funny, sweet and without pretense. I wonder how she would have aged, had she not have died so young? Would she have been as funny as a character actress like Billie Burke, also from DINNER AT EIGHT?
Billie Burke. . .Glinda the Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz. If Jean hadn't passed, she could have possibly played Glinda as she was a MGM contract actor.
JEAN TA GRANDE BEAUTE SUBLIMEE PAR L'ARTISTIQUE DES TOURNAGES EN NOIR ET BLANC !!!!!!!!!! HEUREUSEMENT LES REPORTAGES NOUS MONTRENT TES MAGNIFIQUES GRANDS YEUX BLEUS !!!!!!
sorry but thats exactly what shes doing because I saw Lionel Barrymore talking about the film and Marie Dressler, and he specifically mentions that scene and the gag of comparing jewellery.
Jean Harlow was one hell of a Hollywood icon. Had she lived on as a great comedian, her sex symbol status was on its way out which would've been a great thing for her. She craved to become above all a great actress.
Yeah... fashion does crazy things to lady's brows! I see girls doing similar tings to their brows today... it is weird! So is burning all the color out of your hair! Even worse, burning streaks in your hair!
That double take by Marie Dressler is PRICELESS!!!!
Best double take ever by Marie Dressler!...perfect timing; a GREAT scene...beautiful acting by Jean and Marie.

She would have been up there with them.
She made her mark, she steals Libeled Lady out from under Powell, Loy & Tracy.
Think about it. Who have the best performance in that film?.
Oh agreed! I think she would have went well into the '50s with her career and to think she could have even helped in the WWII effort here at home with her stardom power.
This was her best performance❣️❣️❣️❣️
Her dresss.. Utterly divine and beautiful.. I love the 1930s
This is what a movie star is. No one can compare to Jean.
Hedy
one of the greatest double takes ever caught on film.
Invented the double take!
@@michaelsimpson6970 a luxury liner suddenly dropping anchor.
Was that the director laughing after dressler says oh my dear that's something YOU need never worry about...??
@@michaelsimpson6970 That double take of Marie Dressler with Jean Harlow is priceless.
Marie Dressler, in 2 seconds you made yourself a place in film history ❤. Well Done!!!!
I love Jean Harlow's backless dress
"My skin is so delicate, I _never_ expose myself."
I like at 1;02 when Marie Dressler is comparing her bracelets against Jeans and the exagerated stop when she told her she had read a book...great stuff!

When Marie Dresser says " That's something you need not worry about." I actually laughed out loud.
These movies had a lot of moments like this.
This should be revived on Broadway.
I was reading a book the other day pure genius from Marie Dressler
Marie Dressler was an "old school" silent film actress I believe That exaggerated stop I think might be left over from that style of acting.
Her Delivery and her style are way ahead of her time....I adore her....
Marie Dresser became a popular film star in her last years. Jean and Marie were friends and there were plans for them to make another film together but it got delayed and sadly Marie passed away from cancer.
sadly Harlow wasn't long for this world either, she died a few yrs. later at age 26
Two great actresses at their peak. A wonderful movie with fabulous stars. A lost art given the majority of today's movies
she was a comedian and a goddess of the early screen very bright and very gracious
Jean Harlow is sooo adorable!
Marie dressler
She isn't comparing her bracelet to Jean's. She looks at her jewellery throughout the film because they remind her of 'past' loves..!
I bet if she had lived she would have had a long career in comedy.
Yes, she might have been right up there with Lucille Ball!!
Jean Harlow had some of the best one liners in the movie.😅😅❤ Stayed pretty 😍
Happy Birthday Jean! You were so funny and so cute!
1:04 Greatest doubletake in history!
She was fantastic. Marie Dresser and Jean got along well.
I'd love to see the scene where Jean tells Wallace Beery, "You couldn't get into the men's room at the Astor!"

@@shawnmcculley2995 Yes, and that scene between Marie Dressler and Jean Harlowe is on of my favorites in all moviedom. :)

You can definitely see how Marilyn was inspired by Jean.
Allen Quinn She was, she used to stare out the orphanage window while all the other kids were asleep and dream of becoming the next Jean Harlow :)

Marie y jean...las amo...
I didn't judge anything on one scene. Seen the film hundreds of times and read every single book about her!
Definitely a great classic movie 🎥
Her body is just right in that outfit
I need to find this movie online!!!!

That backless dress was stunning.
Never noticed her noticing the bracelets before!!
Àwesome!!!👍🏆❤️💚
Dead! Lmfao! The ending! Lol!
Yeah... I do the same thing... I'm always looking at expensive jewelery too--reminds me of all my love affairs!
nice vid !
The credit goes to the folks who made the original movie! I merely yanked out a couple of little moments that did something for me!

1:20 Who laugh ?
Don't be sorry! I see what you mean!

What’s the gag about being “exposed” that is mentioned in the description?
Is it the one where Jean says about her skin being delicate?
That’s Glenda init? The good witch
I stand corrected. Sorry, NonStopRocker. I'll have a closer look at the scene.

...It's all good, except when it ain't!!!
You know I'm still not convinced that she's comparing her bracelet to Jean's. She's looking at her own bracelet, not looking at Jean.
Looks like Billie Burke spit at 0:52

anyone else here for WST3335?
For a high-maintenance broad! LOL Bet your average gal from that time didn't fuss with her brows this much!
Eight is one of those words that doesn't rhyme with anything

Marie Dressler.....better than the Marx brothers at comedy
she's pretty but she kinda looks scary cuz of her brows
I love that slightly manic look with her femme fatale image
I've always hated the penciled eye-brow look used by many actresses of the 1930s. It doesn't enhance their looks.
