Jean Harlow was ahead of everyone. While some companies did mould their actresses and actors to be "seen this way __" She did not allow herself to be changed for anyone. Her kindness, her manners, her charisma, and her uniqueness is what attracted her fans and new audiences even today! To hear that MGM and other companies went silent for some time. MGM closed its doors for a while to mourn and remember Jean means a lot. Nowadays most film companies hear one of their stars has died and instead of mourning they go into a PR crisis = damage control. I have seen at least three of her movies and I was sad when through my research I learned she died so young. I hope she is resting in peace being among the stars.
I recently saw my first few Jean Harlow movies (Red Headed Woman, Dinner at Eight, Libeled Lady) and she immediately became one of my favorite actresses. She was absolutely radiant on screen and a genuinely amazing actress whose talent exceeded her looks.

You learn something new every day it seems. I'm 57 now. and today I learned that Jean Harlow was in a Laurel & Hardy film! I'd tell anyone who asked me my favourite ever Hollywood actress that it was Jean Harlow. Can't believe I have never seen that clip of her with L&H before though. lol
I always think about what it would have been if she had lived longer. Imagine her living to be 90 years old, doing 100+ films, seeing her on screen going through decades, watching her interviews, having daughters and sons growing up. It would have been amazing. Unfortunately, she was gone too soon. If I could go back in time, she would be a person I'd like to save somehow, as weird as that sounds, but I do think of it often. I discovered Jean's films about 12 years ago and I still enjoy them, just wish we had more..
Scarlet fever is a disease that we forget how devastating it was to especially children. My aunt had the disease as a child in the 1930s. Fortunately she she was very mildly affected by it. Harlow death pointed out how serious the disease was to people later on in life. She was an amazing person.

Actually, he had his hand in many productions and was #3 at MGM, right after Mayer and Thalberg, which explains why Jean married this very unattractive man. In fact, when Joe Kennedy was considering setting up his own studio in LA, he wanted Bern to be head of production. The inaccuracies go on and on, and the only explanation is that Shulman knew what sold books.
That's a great question! My guess is that Jean's personal effects went to her mother but I wonder if the ring was returned to William Powell. I think it was in the highly unreliable "Harlow" by Iriving Schulman that it was mentioned that Mother Jean said she would have Jean's jewels buried with her so she could give them to Jean in Heaven. I've read several books about Jean Harlow but I don't think it was ever mentioned just what happened to the ring or other personal effects.----One thing mentioned in "Harlow" is that Jean and screenwriter Cary Wilson co-authored a novel called "Today is Tonight". That really did happen and the book was published long after Jean's death. I have a paperback copy printed in maybe the late 1960's---but haven't read it yet!

It's my understand that Paul Bern and Dorothy Millette had a common law marriage, which is really not marriage. There is only one real legal marriage, it is a unique relationship as regarded both by society and by the law, which is why it has been fought for for so long.

If you move to California from a state that recognizes it they honor it here as a legal marriage. It's how Pamela Courson Morrison got legal status as Jim Morrisons widow and inherited his estate. They'd spent some time in Colorado which at the time was a common law marriage state. I don't know if that is still true. After she died then it went to his parents as next of kin.

If you can get Roslyn Russell's autobiography, Life is a Banquet, she talks about Jean Harlow. She made movies with her, liked her a lot and tried to help her. It's a very entertaining book on it's own.
A wonderful actress. Among her best films were "Dinner at Eight" and even more so, "Bombshell", in which she expressed her natural warmth, sensitivity, and sense of humor. This film also had a grain of truth in how she was treated by the studio and by her dominating mother in real life. After watching these films, one feels the terrible tragedy of her early death - which was nearly unbearable for her beloved William Powell.
TBH, and this is just my personal taste, but I don’t find her as attractive as many of her contemporaries. But she had the wit and personality that made her so magnetic.

What a woman! Jean was a comedian at heart whose spirit has been with me since early childhood. Tell me, how can a mere child of, say, 7 years of age know anything about Hollywood's quintessential original blonde bombshell? From that ancient memory, Jean has always been an important part of my life. Amazing! Also, Jean died at approximately, if not precisely, at 11:37 a.m. Interestingly, I was born at the time of her death. Needless to say, I will take this lady to the grave and beyond with me along with Jesus whom, I hope, will introduces us.
I can't help but think all the mental stress she suffered (never mentioned) in a very compressed amount of time took a terrible physical toll on her young body coupled with a demanding career her system permanently compromised by scarlet fever and her body was simply unable to physically fight off any serious illness, even if she had access to appropriate medication.
Great observation! I think that also contributed to it considering her poor health she had genetically. She was also drinking heavily which weakened her immune system. She was just feeling like a lost outsider who was making big money for a totalitarian state.

I spoke with someone who was at the summer camp in Michigan and Mother Jean did tend to Harlean while she had scarlet fever. I believe the woman was Virginia Wood Wornall.

From what I've seen in the news reports that she was very sick for a long time before she died she was doing movies then why in the world wasn't she having to see a doctor for a physical exam why didn't they find it I don't think there was any treatments but from what I heard she didn't even know how thick she was maybe they didn't do exams in those days to be insured for the movie what a shame

She died from the lye in her hair dye. Toxic materials used back then.
Sadly, there was no dialysis, much less kidney transplants back then. People with kidney failure back then were doomed. 😞

TBH, and this is just my personal taste, but I don’t find her as attractive as many of her contemporaries. But she had the wit and personality that made her so magnetic.

What a woman! Jean was a comedian at heart whose spirit has been with me since early childhood. Tell me, how can a mere child of, say, 7 years of age know anything about Hollywood's quintessential original blonde bombshell? From that ancient memory, Jean has always been an important part of my life. Amazing! Also, Jean died at approximately, if not precisely, at 11:37 a.m. Interestingly, I was born at the time of her death. Needless to say, I will take this lady to the grave and beyond with me along with Jesus whom, I hope, will introduces us.

I can't help but think all the mental stress she suffered (never mentioned) in a very compressed amount of time took a terrible physical toll on her young body coupled with a demanding career her system permanently compromised by scarlet fever and her body was simply unable to physically fight off any serious illness, even if she had access to appropriate medication.
Great observation! I think that also contributed to it considering her poor health she had genetically. She was also drinking heavily which weakened her immune system. She was just feeling like a lost outsider who was making big money for a totalitarian state.

I spoke with someone who was at the summer camp in Michigan and Mother Jean did tend to Harlean while she had scarlet fever. I believe the woman was Virginia Wood Wornall.
She was so delightful...Mr. Clark Gable chose upon her passing, to have a blanket of gardenias made to cover her casket. They were fond friends...

AND, coincidentally, Gable was married to William Powell’s ex wife, Carol Lombard (a beautiful comedian in her own right!) at the time of Harlows passing. Powell being married & divorced from Lombard is one reason he was dragging his feet on marrying Harlow.

From what I've seen in the news reports that she was very sick for a long time before she died she was doing movies then why in the world wasn't she having to see a doctor for a physical exam why didn't they find it I don't think there was any treatments but from what I heard she didn't even know how thick she was maybe they didn't do exams in those days to be insured for the movie what a shame

They didn't share" the same tragic fate".. Harlow died of kidney failure in her early twenties.. Monroe had severe mental problems and died by her own hand from a drug overdose.. Huge difference..

"Hold Your Man." I would say start at the very beginning, "Double Whoopee" in which she had a bit, and attracted a lot of attention, then "The Saturday Night Kid," although it may not be available. (I've never seen it.) Find a chronology from beginning to end so you'll see how she grew as an actress, and did she ever!
