CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: An all-star cast shows up at Lionel Barrymore and Billie Burke's penthouse for George Cukor's comic masterpiece, "Dinner At Eight". On the guest list is an aging actress, Marie Dressler, a rich tycoon, Wallace Beery, his chorus girl wife, Jean Harlow and a faded movie star, John Barrymore who's having an affair with their daughter Madge Evans. Also in sterling support is fast talking Lee Tracy as Barrymore's beleaguered agent and Hilda Vaughn as Harlow's laconic maid who resembles a man in drag. Taken from the stage hit by the Algonquin Roundtable team of George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, "Dinner at Eight" had the most star studded cast since "Grand Hotel," the year earlier. Directed by a master, it's glamorous, and witty; "They don't make 'em like that anymore!"

at 5:51 see Marie Dressler do one of the most delicious double takes in movie history at the shock of hearing Harlow say "I was reading a book the other day...:
I saw this movie when i was in high school. 10 seconds of Jean Harlow sitting in bed eating chocolates and ordering the maid around...and I was in love. It sounds SO corny...but whenever I'd get bullied in school I'd imagine myself a tough, resilient 30s dame like Harlow, and I'd muster up enough attitude to pull through. Anyway...glad you are bringing good stuff like this to a bigger audience. For many of us, they were more than just movies.
I love this film and Harlow cracks me up! Genius!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I love the scene between Wallace Beery and Jean Harlow:
Him, referring to the dinner party Billie has invited them to (paraphrasing): "This will help me get into the right places."
Harlow: "You couldn't get into the men's room at the Astor!"
Love this film. Dressler's closing line is up there with "Well, nobody's perfect".
I love when Carlotta comes barging into Billie Burke’s character’s home unannounced and asks for a whiskey, “I’m simply depleted.”😂
I love that too and the way Carlotta immediately sits down. takes off her shoes and begins rubbing her feet, MUCH to Billie Burke's repulsion. Perfect! Billie's character tries so hard to attain the sociol connections and status Carlotta simply takes for granted; " Didn't do too badly for a little girl from Quincy, Illionois did I , Ducky?!" Hope you are well and safe, Omar!
when Marie Dressler did Anna Christie with Greta Garbo, the usually stoic Garbo, was so impressed by Dressler, she had her dressing room filled with flowers.
Smart Lady.
All these years later I'm watching Steve make his entrance over and over and over........and crying with laughter. Blessings and gratitude to this vastly talented man. Love from Ginny in San Diego, California.
I love Dresslers expression, when Harlow begins to detail what the book she was reading was about, just a perfect "oh shit, I'm going to have to listen to her.."
That double take is classic!
Actually, Marie Dressler is reacting to the fact that Jean Harlow is even able to READ a book...
Dressler's doubletake.....priceless.
Yes, Marie Dressler is so wonderful! Especially love when she mugs as she utters "I haven't a sou!" Her scenes were the best and there's always something to discover---like the final scene w/Harlow where she's comparing her bracelets to hers. Too funny!
The queen of bits.
I have loved this movie for over 50 years! It's so perfectly cast. The John Barrymore character is a bit wearing, but in the end, oddly moving. Dressler is the best, and one wants more of her than there is. You miss her when she's off screen.
Yes, you crave her.
The Carlotta Vance character is based on a late 19th-early 20th century actress named Maxine Elliott. Ms. Elliott retired from the stage and lived luxuriously on the Riviera collecting celebrities and titled Europeans, among whom was Sir Winston Churchill who spent long vacations at her villa. Her long-time lover had been J. Pierpont Morgan, who'd not only financed the New York City theater bearing her name, but advised her on financial decisions. Needless to say, the difference between Carlotta Vance and Maxine Elliott was their divergent economic situations. Enjoy your show...keep up the good work.
Thank you for posting that. Its nice to know.
I loved this!!! Thanks so much!
Don't know if you'll see this, Alexandra, but thank you for this bit of theatrical history. I had never heard of Maxine Elliott until I read your post. I just saw a retouched still photo of Sir Winston walking on a London street, elegant in top hat, dated 1901. This may have been around the time he was spending vacations at her villa.
"dinner at eight" is one of my favorites. years ago, while working at a newspaper in cobourg, ontario, canada, i wrote a series of articles on marie dressler; she was born in that town, and her birthplace, called dressler house, is now a museum and remains a cobourg tourist attraction to this day. watching chaplin silents, "min and bill" and "dinner at eight" was part of my research, and i fell in love with her, and with this movie. (you're right, that maid DOES look like a drag queen!! LOL)
Dressler was so amazing and how wonderful that she got pulled out of prctical destitution and the last years of her life was the top box office draw in Hollywood.
A brilliant and engaging review of a classic comedy. Such fun to watch Steve at work, giving us his thoughts on film and his impressions throughout. He’s as much fun (if not more) as the films he reviews!
OMG! If I didn't know better, I'd ask for your hand in adultery! Thank you so much! You made my day!!! OXOXO Steve
@louisrexify
I know, it was so brave of Barrymore to allow them to essentially film his own life. That phase would actually happen to him eventually. By the time he did Midnight w/ Claudette Colbert he had to read cue cards, but Mary Astor said you never could catch him at it.
As a child, I had a list of "fantasy relatives;" the three top fantasy aunts were Marie Dressler, Agnes Morehead and Eve Arden.
LOL! "Flora, Fauna & Merryweather" ( Sleeping Beauty) I'll take that line up! With me it would have been " Margaret Rutherford, Edna May Oliver and Mary Boland!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Just imagine the family reunions!
@@jeraldbaxter3532 Three empresses of comedy and a TOQ waiting on them hand an foot, between anecdotes, of course. LOL! have a great weekend!
Mine would've been Spring Byington and Verna Felton, based mainly on seeing them in "December Bride," as Lily Ruskin and Hilda Crocker. This was a much loved 1950's TV sitcom that was also my introduction to the wonderful character actor Harry Morgan who played Lily's next door neighbor, Pete Porter. Actually, they would've been more like my fantasy grandmothers, since my aunts were in their twenties and thirties. I was lucky to have two wonderful grandmothers, so I didn't need to fantasize.
@hecate55
I agree! I especially love Joan Bennett in a Film Noir called "The Reckless Moment" with James Mason, which was remade with Tilda Swinton as "The Deep End". It's one of the few re-makes of a classic that's just as good as the original and has an interesting gay angle.
George Cukor. He could handle women. He could handle men too! Classic line Thanks!
This is what great writing and great film making looks like.
Marie Dressler calls Jean Harlow a whole without using any nasty words.
Love this movie.
To borrow from a certain '80's song; " Greta Garbo. Harlow Jean, On the cover of a magazine. They had style. They had grace. Marie Dressler gave good face." Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
I love the scene where Jean Harlow is sitting in bed, and she decides to 'noodge' Wallace Beery...she puts on this squeaky baby voice, and burbles...... "Daad...dee". Hysterical.
"Kitty wants to see the big booful house!"
It's still funny no matter how many times I see it.
Steve - would you do Red Headed Woman? Pleeeease?
@@StellaWaldvogel It's on my list.
Marie Dressler and Billie Burk steal the picture. I wonder when Jello started replacing "aspic" in popular culture? The last reference I remember is pretty late, "Psycho" 1960. The "Packard's" were common, but of course the Packard was THE most popular luxury car in America.
Harlow is like a Packard at the end. Sleek and stunning. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
@batjon1963
I know! The maid's name is Hilda Vaughn and she did a few other minor films. She' so laconic and underplays to Harlow brilliantly. I love how Harlow keeps calling her "stupid' and a "nit wit", until she turns the tables on her and blackmails her with that bracelet. So great!
Ain't it?!? Thanks for watching! Steve
I first saw this movie in about 1968 at the Los Feliz Cinema when I was twenty and I loved it. I was just discovering Classic Hollywood films, on the big screen minus commercials and cuts, newly restored and seen as they were meant to be seen. Looking at this now, I realize it was made 90 years ago. Harlow at 22 years old was starting out in life, and Dressler at about 65 was nearing the end of hers. And yet, neither of them had very much longer on this earth. Dressler would be gone a year later and Jean had only 4 more years to live. I would love to spend a "drinks with broads" evening with the two of them! Thanks for reviewing this one, Steve!
So great to see these films on the big screen where they were meant to be seen. When I forst moved to New York back in the '70's, there were at least a dozen movie theatres that specialized in classic films, eac with their own aprticular itineraries. Thanks for watching! As to Miss harlow and Dame Dressler, when we both get to Heaven, we'll see if we can arrange it! Hooray! Thnaks for watching! Steve
Kudos to George Cukor who recognized that Harlow wasn't a vamp, as she had been characterized in her first movies, but a sexy comic. Nobody delivered hissy fits like Harlow, and one of her best is in Dinner at Eight. Great review from Steve.
My favorite Harlow line; " NERTS!" Hilarious!
Thanks again, Mr. Hayes, for this entertaining commentary. I love the line of BBurke, "She smells of Oklahoma!" And just as Crawford slapped every man who every appeared across from her, Harlow called every leading man, "You big apt--!" (In Wallace Beery's case she was correct😄). The thing about Jean Harlow is that I never considered her very sexy or glam but screamingly funny and very lovable. An inimitable performance when she played opposite Cary Grant in SUZY (I think that was the title). So keep up the good work, Sir. We're always ready for more from you🤩
My Dear Mr Cone< Alwaya so nice to ear from you! Thanks so much and thanks for watching! Havew the Happiest New Year inaginable! Big Hugs! Steve
Delicious! It's been one of my favourite movies since I can't remember when. Marie Dressler is divine. The timing of that "reading a book' clip is just fantastic. Am I right that she was No. 1 movie star at this time?
Yes. But just two years earlier she was down and out and virtually broke living on the Riviera. She died shortly after "Dinner at 8", but she had wonderful happy final years.
Dear Steve, I love your videos on classic movies. Please do one on one of my favorites: Joan Bennett. It took seeing her in Dark Shadows in the 60's to appreciate her body of work. She was intelligent and beautiful. Love the Jean Harlow piece.
I amy do "The Woman In The Window", "Scarlett Street" or "The Reckless Moment".
A Divine Classic! 🤩
'I was reading a book' - the reaction - priceless! P.S. Am waking up in the morning first thing I hear in my mind a jingle 'Tired 'ol Queen a the movies' ......( my psychiatrist has told me I am suffering from neurological programming!!! )
Like a truck slamming on the breaks at 100 miles per hour. Hilarious!
It would be great if you did a video series specifically on actors, because you tell it so well.
Greets, Steve.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely think it over! Best; Steve
I love your videos. I don't always take your suggestions, but when I do I always enjoy them. Please keep making these videos.
Good! You can't like 'em all, but so glad you do.
I love Steve's "behind the scenes" history and all the lovely little tidbits he throws in! My dear Queen, you are the best! I know where to go to find out if I'll want to see a movie or not!
Ta, for now!

Brilliant as always Steve.
90th anniversary of Dinner at Eight today! I worship Jean Harlow ❤
I do too. I always intended to vsisit her grave when I went to LA. I managed to visist Hollywood Forever, which is wonderful, but never got to Forrest Lawn where Harlow's crypt is located. She was stunnning and hilarious.
Oh this is a fabulous movie !!!
Yes! They are all at the top of their game! Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
Just watched this one the other day. John Barrymore is heartbreaking!
A very brave performance.

It's on y "to do" list.

I 💘 dinner at eight.
So do I! '30's glamour at it's best! Harlow and Dressler & Billie Burke! Hooray!!! Thanks for watching. If you haven't already, please subscribe and stay SAFE! Best; Steve
“Crabmeat “ lol!
LOL! I'd rather have crabmeat than aspic! UGH! Thanks! Steve
Billie Burke! We're sooooo used to her in The Wizard of Oz.
Yup.
Steve, help! There are two instances when Carlotta says the name of the dog. Both sound to me like the named was dubbed in later. Any idea what the original name was?
Thanks. Love all your reviews.
Tarzan.
Thank you Steve for introducing me to this wonderful movie.
You're so welcome.
Jean Harlow was a tiny little thing (5'1"). She was hidden under the dryer and another star was sitting next to her having her own hair done and was wondering who the little girl was - she was having her toenails done and her foot looked like a 12 year old. It was Jean Harlow.
Yeah. "The Baby'. Everyone loved her.
My absolute favorite movie and with Marie Dressler one swell actress!😊
"I was reading a book the other day..." And her Pekimgese is named "Tarzan"! Hilarious!
Just the tonic I needed this Sunday evening…bring on the gin!
"A wee drinky!" OXOX

Thanks Steve.
Thank you, Glenn. Hope you are well and SAFE!
You're a national, nay, galactic treasure, Steve Hayes!
Flatterer! I'll give you an hour to cut that out! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Is the reason this is one of your best video reviews is because it is one of the best films you've reviewed? Now that I ask, that's a tough question and probably un-answerable.
Therefore, I'll let it ride and thank you for the compliment and for watching! Steve
i appreciate this
Me too. It's witty and smart.
One of the best movies ever.
I think so too. I love the wit.
Such a great movie! Will you be doing any of The Thin Man movies soon?
I reviwed "The Thin Man" and "After The Thin Man" awhile after I did this one, Check out my past epsiodes. Love them! Thank you so much for watching. Please push the "LIKE" button. It really helps.
My Grandparents favourite film.
@urskogen89
No, I've never seen it and would love to. I adore her as well. I find her simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking...great actress!
Twice in the movie Carlotta says the name of her dog. Both times it sounds like name was dubbed. Anyone know the original name?
Tarzan.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Thanks for the reply! Hi, I found it. The dog was originally named Mussolini, and the name Tarzan was dubbed in due to the political situation in 1933.
@@falcon664 This is why I love the CZcams comments section so much, when I learn things I didn't know. I'm surprised that as early as 1933, MGM would find Mussolini too controversial to name a dog after him in a movie. The studios were very reluctant to show anti-fascist content for fear of alienating the lucrative European markets. Okay, I just read the Wikipedia entry on "Dinner at Eight." The dog's name was changed to Tarzan precisely because they were afraid of offending Mussolini by naming a dog after him.
Jean Harlow was woman before her time!! ❤❤❤
She barely had time. Unfortunately.
@Steve Hayes is true!
Another MGM all star movie with an all star cast
Yup! Count me in! Thanks for watching! Steve

Oh Steve I love your shower curtain! And what's behind it! Love you too man.
Flatterer! LOL!
I have always had a problem labeling this film a comedy. Sure there are funny bits, but mostly the shadows of Lionel Barrymores tragic circumstances hang over everything. A very sad film. In a good way.
Steve, you're a riot. Change the YT title. Queen, yes, but nevair TIRED.
Nope. Gotta call 'em like I see 'em! Besides, it's 'catchy"! LOl!

Oh yeah, who do I take after?
Jean Harlow was never beautiful to me. Average looking pretty.
