Once upon a time, in the late 1980's, my best friend was working at Fred Segal on Melrose when this happened:
Bette Davis was smoking and shopping, when a young salesperson, who didn't know who she was, approached her and discretely mentioned that there was no smoking in the store.
She replied: "Imagine that! A young man like YOU
    .......telling ME......what to do!"

It changed my personality somewhat but I still had the ugly duckling mindset. Always putting myself at the center of the joke. It took some years to get out of that habit. Finally met a guy (3rd time is the charm) who thinks I’m pretty and tells me so often 😊

I'm so glad. This movie gently touched on alot of things that here to for hadn't really been delt with. I think that's why it's endured and been so loved for so many years. I love the gentle way Dr Jacquith leads her into analysis; " " People come to a fork in the road. They don't know which road to take. I simpy say; "Not that way. This way." Pretty heady stuff for the time. "Kings Row", another favorite of mine and made the same year, also covered similar territory. Ironically, both starred Calude Rains and wise physicians...although in "Kings Row", his character takes a tragic turn. Bette had massive insecuriteis and related to the character and I think that because she had been through similar situtations, she was able to bering Charlotte in both her stages so vividly to life. Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve

I saw my first Bette Davis movie at age 9. All About Eve. I know I was too young and I thought how can she be a movie star. She's not pretty enough. I wanted to see Betty Grable, Jeanne Crain, Jane Powell etc. So many of Bette's best films were yet to be discovered by me as I got older. I never knew her as a younger actress. In my 30s when I saw so many films in theaters that specialized in showing older film classics- later TCM. I love so many of them but this one is my favorite. When Gladys Cooper played domineering, rigid and essentially heartless, she was at her best and when Bette stands up to her, it is so satisfying. Love this and Steve, it's so much fun to see and hear you do Bette.

Dear Steve, like another of your fans, I too go back and forwards between this and "All About Eve" as to which is my favourite Bette Davis film, but every time I watch "Now Voyager" I find another fascinating detail in it. For instance, back in "The Letter" Bette says that the man who "attacked" her had complimented her on her hands, and she is wearing a sparkling ring on the little finger of her right hand, which you notice as she works feverishly at crochet. In "Now Voyager", even at her plainest, Bette as fat Charlotte Vale is wearing the same sparkling ring as she carves ivory, and is still wearing it when, transformed, she knits and listens to Jerry's friends on the cruise. It's a nice little signature, perhaps a choice of hers. Gladys Cooper is superb as her monstrous mother, and how I agree with you about how lovely Bette looks in her new wardrobe on the liner - she is wearing the most sensational clothes, and with her hair up looks truly amazing. Of course the relationship between her and Paul Henreid is the crux of the plot, but she herself described the character he played as weak, because he wouldn't leave his wife, and said she hoped Charlotte Vale would end up with Claude Rains. I think Jerry's character is that of a typical emotional blackmailer - the scene when, having met Charlotte again, he cross-questions her jealously about the single man she intends to marry, before boarding a train that will take him away from her, is appalling. He breaks her heart all over again. Although that is, of course, what married men do. (I had one turn up at an airport and dictate a letter for me to send, breaking up with somebody single! So talk about true to life.) In "Casablanca", his character has the right to expect that Ingrid Bergman will go off with him at the end of the film - she's his wife, and Humphrey Bogart does the decent thing and sends her off with him. But his character in "Now Voyager" isn't noble and you end up hoping Charlotte will find happiness with somebody far better. I hope one day you'll see my response to your review of a far less important film, "Old Acquaintance", which I couldn't resist commenting on (your reviews always fascinate me, no matter of which film) and it's a delight to hear from you. Best wishes, Alida

I never liked Henried's character in "Now, Voyager" for those exact reasons. She alraedy had to suffer the tyrtranny of that insufferable mother and then, even knowing her past mental history, her breakdowns and brave recovery, he berates her for trying the recover her life again with someone else after losing the only man she's ever loved. Men! If I wasn't one myself, I'd barely talk to me.

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ He definitely had a romantic flavor about him. His portrayal of Victor Lazlo was quite noble, not an easy role to play, but he played him with compassion. Victor clearly sensed the attachment between Elsa and Rick, so the nuance he brought to his portrayal was significant.
While this is clearly a romantic film, it also was a war film to encourage the war efforts. At this time, the outcome of the war was not clear, so the patriotism in signing the French National anthem and the emotions of the characters is still inspiring. The film underscores the plight of many trying to get out of harms way.
As always Claude Rains was great in his role. I thought he and Rick had a real Bromance at the end. When he was a young man in the 1920's in London he taught at RADA & Sir John Gielgud was one of his students there. He later recounted that about about half of the male & female students were in love/lust with their handsome teacher.

Love Claude Rains in everything and Paul Henreid is sooo handsome! 😍 Gladys Cooper is at her formidable best in this film and the ever-watchable Mary Wickes provides great support.
