Revolt in MTB!! World’s Best Riders Strike at Crankworx | Dirt Shed Show 472

  • It's the Dirt Shed Show and Martyn Ashton and Blake Samson are sitting down to discuss the burning issue in mountain biking, the rider strike which affected the Men’s Slopestyle Final at Crankworx Rotorua. The male riders chose not to partake in the competition after travelling to the venue, issuing a list of demands to the organisers who could only meet 2 out of the 3 conditions for which the riders would drop in. The sticking point, is over appearance fees, guaranteeing pay for riders who turn up to ride in the competition. We’re reflecting on what this could mean for the rest of mountain biking, and if danger pay for all is feasible with the industry's current condition.

I think it was about time they got a wakeup call. The way some of the top-tier slopestyle events have been run (and judged) have left a lot to be desired. These folks are putting a lot on the line to give us the best that they got, they deserve better.

My most memorable animal encounter happened last summer on Vancouver Island. I was riding alone on a pretty isolated trail and went around a corner to find myself face to face with a mountain lion about 15 feet away. We were both pretty surprised and the lion turned around and ran off the trail. That's when I saw a second mountain lion about 40 feet away. It stayed on the trail and just stared at me - for a long time! I talked to it but didn't do anything aggressive, since it wasn't being aggressive either. Eventually it moved off the trail and walked past me in the bushes about 50 feet away, stopping at one point to stare at me long enough for me to take a picture with my phone. I did think twice before continuing to ride down the trail knowing that one lion was on one side of the trail and the other was on the other side, and it gave me pause to ride past the place on my way back, but I never saw them again. So overall it was a pretty exciting encounter. Then recently there was a pair of mountain lions in Washington state where one of them attacked one of four ladies riding by; the other three women worked really hard to get the lion off the woman who was attacked and hold it down (standing on top of a bike on top of the mountain lion!) until a wildlife officer could come and kill it. It turned out to be a healthy young male, so it wasn't starving or anything. And then last week a mountain lion attacked two brothers, killing one of them, in northern California. It made me feel lucky that nothing like that happened to me.

I live in Kimberley South Africa….My animal encounter was a collision with an English Bulldog….Was just into my ride and doing about 15kph when this unleashed fellow suddenly turned into my path. I was too late to swerve or apply breaks. The collision caused me to fly over the handle bar and connect with Mother Earth head and elbows first causing a broken elbow and various injuries to arms and knees. Luckily the dog was not injured (tough fellows these English Bulldogs). The old fellow actually came over and licked some of my wounds. You can imagine my language about the owner of the dog not having it on a leash in a public area. The fact that I had a visor attached to my helmet saved my face from serious damage as my face hit the rocky ground pretty heavily. Nonetheless this 73 year old body got back on bike the and headed back home and from there to the emergency room.😢😂

I live in New Jersey near New York City. I go to a “nearby” (about 45 minutes away) state park a lot for xc and cyclocross races and for fun because I like the trails. Last summer, I took my oldest son to go riding with me and we were having a great day. We had just come down a small hill and made a left turn onto a nice flat twisty trail. Just as I made the turn, I saw a black lump up ahead. I stopped and told my son to stop and take a look ahead. He said “why?” kind of loudly which made the big black lump sit up and look our way. What I assumed was a bear was not A bear. The first bear was a big one and ran off when it saw us. That’s when the second bear sat up and saw us. It was much smaller and fluffier. My son then had the great idea to turn around to go a different direction. We skipped the bear section and rode back to the car. It wasn’t the first time I came across a black bear riding but it was the most recent.

I've had my fair share of bear and deer sightings, but one that I'll never forget happened while backpacking in Florida. Me and my crew rounded a bend and saw an alligator hanging out on the trail off to one side. Must have heard us coming because he got up and strolled back into the trees. Thankfully, they can be bashful when they don't feel threatened.

Best stunt mug bounce ever. Nice one Martyn. Crankworx strike is a tough call. There's financial stress on both sides and in the end to cover the costs it will increase ticket prices for spectators to make up for those extra costs and it will have a filter down effect to the other fields of riding too. It would be nice to help out the riders down the field though. It will be interesting to see how the sponsors react to their riders not riding.

This may seem crazy and a little unbelievable, but I swear this happened and it still makes my skin crawl a little. I like to descend fast, and usually my local rides are short enough I can just take a bottle on my bike and no backpack. On a beautiful summer afternoon I was descending my local trail called Sardine Peak in Ogden Utah. I had just passed someone on the downhill and continued on when I felt what I though was someone's hand on my back. I couldn't understand why the person I had just passed had caught up and was trying to get my attention. Looking back quickly I saw no one, and then realized something was moving across my back. I felt little needles which I suddenly realized were claws! Then they started to run around my back! A small squirrel had somehow become attached to me and was riding me down the trail! I reached back without thinking to get him off when he jumped and disappeared into the woods. I stopped and tried to wrap my head around what had just happened while experiencing a severe case of the willys. It all happened in a matter of about 5 seconds, but has changed my life forever! I'm not sure if he was attacking me for being in his woods or I had caught him mid jump and he was just as confused I was about what was happening. I still don't look at squirrels the same way.

My cousin and I went for a ride at St Helens in Tasmania, halfway up the ride to the top it started raining pretty consistently, being on a hardtail I started slipping a lot more and was left behind and it seemed all the wildlife ran away from my cousin and came back in time for me to nearly clean them up. In about 20min I nearly ran into one snake, four pademelons, two wallabies and a few rabbits. The only thing I needed to top it off was a tasmanian devil but they are nocturnal so i missed out on that.
Later that week I had a similar experience at Maydena, wildlife is as much an obstacle as the rockgardens down there.

My most interesting animal encounter was a late season ride in Southeast Wyoming, was on a fast DH trail and came around a corner to a momma moose and her calf, came to a stop about 20 feet before them and very quickly backed away before momma got defensive of her calf. As for the slopestyle thing, Crankworx makes a ton of money from those events, it's only fair that the competitors who put their bodies on the line for Crankworx's profit should receive a share of those profits.

  • @matt_acton-varian

It's easy to forget that the biggest difference between slopestyle and the racing disciplines (XC, ED, DH) are that slopestyle riders don't have backing of professional teams. They don't have people and sponsors who specifically cover travel, accommodation and other non-bike expenses, and look after other aspects of event admin. It is absolutely detrimental to young or struggling riders who find themselves one last place, dnf or event-skipping illness or injury away from being forced to end their careers.

The kitten was very comfortable with me holding her, indicating it had plenty of human interaction before, but she was way too far from any residence to have just simply wandered off. The shelter I brought her to believes she was brought in to the woods and dumped. Luckily, I had video of the encounter, which the shelter put on to their Facebook page. The video went viral and even the local news did a story on it. Because of the attention, not only did the kitten (aptly named Fuji) get a record number of adoption requests, the shelter was able to adopt out most of their cats, which they’d been struggling to do for a while.

just going for a chill ride in Winter Park Colorado and I was peddling up a steep hill and all a sudden a massive mousse stood up right beside me. I was soooo scared that I peddled as fast and as hard as possible luckily the moose didn't charge I probably scared it more than it scared me!!!!

You guys been to Saalbach-Hinterglemm just like me and I'm sure you experienced the same: shredding down a trail or track and around the corner loitering a bunch of cows directly on the trail. 😂 Not all trails are "electrifenced in".

I agree with the male slopstyle riders. I also think their timing is horrible. Making these demands when the bike industry is in a very low period, with brands dropping teams, some struggling to keep making bikes, etc.

First ride ever in Squamish and came across a black bear sitting on its arse on the side the trail . After peddling my a$$ off down the trail. I came across a local walking her dog off leash and warned her about the bear 5 mins up the trail and her response was “huh, guess I’ll put my dog on the leash. “ 🤦‍♂️ Squamish locals are different

Living in Colorado (US), I've had a wide variety of wildlife encounters, nearly hit plenty of deer, moose and bears. But I think my favorite unsuspected ones have been getting chased/attacked by grouse. I've got tons of times they've chased me up climbs pecking at my rear tire, and even had a friend crash while getting chased and then get pecked at. Plucky little buggers!

Was riding in Kincaid Park in Anchorage, Alaska through a high grasses area. Rounded a turn and slammed the brakes to miss the lynx standing in the middle of the trail. It froze the disappeared into the weeds. Definitely could have taken me off the bike if it so chose.

I can see crankwork giving a stipend to each rider for competing in the event. But aren't most pros sponsored in some form? Sadly, this isn't a market that gets billions watching.

Not to take anything away from the other disciplines but the Slopestyle event is last for a reason, it is the biggest draw for the crowd (the people who've paid to be there/where the money comes from). A bit cheeky to not look after them like the superstarts they are. 🤔

#captioncontest Rich takes up armature POV proctology. Great show Boys. I would like to add my support to the Riders at crankworks and beyond. They deserve it. I love to eat cows but I hate to ride with them. On a trail that filters down a tight canyon a few years back my mates and I encountered a herd of cows. We were forced to ride with and among them for many miles. We were constantly getting dung flipped up all over everything. It was really shitty. Cheers - M

The four of us had dropped down off the mendips and we’re on the way to the pub on a narrow asphalt road. The two fellas just in front made a small rabbit dash off into the undergrowth to the right, i and my other mate were 3 or 4 meters behind and moving with reasonable speed, so when the little guy dashed back out again there was nothing I could do. DUM DUM! RIP and MTB in not a vegan activity it seems
