What's your thoughts on 3d printed bikes? Should we have more metal bikes over carbon? 🤔 let us know 👇
I've said it before and I'll say it again - there will be a time when we look back on our use of carbon and really question why we did it from an environmental point of view. No point celebrating the outdoors, if we feed the machine that is destroying it. #justsayin
The MAIN benefit of 3D/4D should BE the LOWERING of cost to produce bikes. If that doesn't happen after big bike manufactures eventually switch over to that type of MOD production, then it's a BS premise. Once the printers become more affordable and more prevalent, the COGM should have a leveling point then profit will tip the scales. With less overhead, MOH less personnel, the margins will not need to be the same as they are now. But of course inept, ignorant companies will remain greed-driven.
Still no contact in regards to previous hack bodge winnings 😢
All good for printed bikes, allows for more development and using what’s best for purpose (not just using it because they think it’s cool)
Carbon isn’t dead, it’s just dated
Anna needs to do Dirt Shed more!
Anna and Owen is the best combo by far
Anna and Owen were great!!! Such a fun show! Love it!
Over-caffeinated Anna is the best.
Oh yeah, frisky and hot as a firecracker!
Oh yes that head tube is a great place to store mud. Someone smoked too much…
Exactly... Or dust... Either way, terrible idea
Bit of a car crash show but there usually the best!👌🏻😂 Owen and Anna do a make a good duo!👍🏻
Fat biking or snow biking is so much fun! Its harder riding, harder to climb hills but coming down is fun! I've got a couple videos showing some fat biking.
The bionic design of those 3d printed bikes looks really nice. But who is going to clean that? When you can see inside your frame, there will be mud inside the frame.
yep, my thoughts too. I would stay away from it
Yes, as this is a concept bike, hopefully the finished product (if/when) would be a little more mud friendly!
I really like Owen because his style doesn't feel scripted and when Anna matches the vibe it really works!! Looking forward to the Atherton bike if it's aluminium as they're just too expensive for me in any guise currently.
I think 3D printed bikes is going to change one thing in a major way, and that is bike sizing. When it takes no more work or expense to modify each frame to an individual's size and geometry we could all be riding bespoke bikes that fit like our favorite jeans!
Exactly! Especially for us tall slim guys!
My chopstick hack. Bit more explanation. The dropper cable was getting caught on the pivot bolt in the seat tube. I attached a straw to the chopsticks, so i could slide the cable in the straw and guide it up the correct side of the seat post. It was to get the cable out.
#captioncontest It was the second time that week Rich had been asked to sit on an odd shaped shiny black thing bought off Amazon, but this didn't look nearly as much fun as the one Mrs Payne found.
Bike vault = Mondraker - Doddy would give that a super nice 😜😜
Regarding the 3D printed bike:
I've used the design software that produces these rather odd structural shapes. The engineer enters the design constraints (interfaces, loads, envelope/stay out zones) and manufacturing method (machined, formed, 3D printing, etc). Then, you can optimize for weight, strength, or cost. As a stress analysis engineer, I found this software very revealing to help understand optimization. This type of software has been in use for more than a decade in the aerospace industry.
Ridng on snow is popular in Canada. Many have "winter" bikes fat bikes (big balloon tires, I heard someone in the southern US call it a "sand bike") often with studded tires.
#captioncontest
His saddle is paying the price for his choice of the spicy Indian food last night. 🤣
Imagine cleaning that head tube after a ride. AI will never know the pain of cleaning that head tube
With it being electric the concentration of pressurized water in that area that it would inevitably take to clean out is going to cause issues. But if it were like a traditional bike. Id blast it out and make sure everythings dry after so i dont wreck bearings. Wouldnt be so bad as a traditional bike. But yeah i can see some issues with cleaning that all the time being an e bike.
Awesome stuff! 10/10 for effort Anna! Owen - you will be sent back to Fort William, in the rain, until you can understand how "It isna that pish to get pished when it's pishin it doon!"
Oh and though I loved the attempts - it's "Elric" Tee Dee Bee!
Here in Lander Wyoming the local bike club grooms some hiking trails in the national forests (not some road that is not plowed) that are so much fun when conditions are right the trails are hard packed it is like they are paved all the rocks and obstacles are covered with snow and when you fall it is no big deal. It is a special experience because the conditions that make it fun don"t last for long, so many things can change it like wind, temperature and foot traffic ( they can put big postholes in the trail) All and all then conditions are right the hard packed snow is hard to beat. fast and smooth.
Tight budget constraints, definitely alot of Amazon purchases and eBay to stay true to that. I had a really hard time staying under $200 USD on a "budget" build myself.
Throw a mug at the guy next to you for saying Beveridge 😂
I was chatting with Pivot bikes just the other day.
... "we're not going to be going back to Aluminium now, we're moving forward" was the response I got to questioning if they'd be bringing out a cheaper Shuttle.
Had no idea this channel is against e-bikes. SUBSCRIBED!!! ❤
Best Dirt Shed for yonks.
I love snow biking, once you figure out body position you can slide around for days without worry
The alloy Atherton frame I image will allow them to reach lower price points, and hats off to them for trying to engineer it differently.
Carbon will always be infinitely more tuneable and engineers can have a lot of freedom - it's just a shame that not all of it can be seen.
Yeah its tunable. But it seems like the engineers that are designing them dont know anything about rigidity through geometry. Which is killing carbon bikes. Snaps in parts that dont normally snap. Etc. were just not there yet. They shouldnt he on the market yet.
Zikes, I thought I'd tuned into Hambini with that shocking opener
#Caption Contest: “I think this seat needs a Tic Tac”.🤙
So this is how Skynet takes over the world. learning how to design mountain bikes, cars and kettles. Skynet thimking "today the bike shop, tomorrow the World".
I love the energy of this episode!
In aerospace 3d printed metal comes with a couple % mass penalty. Production speed is also slower. But then you are free to shape things however you want, maybe they can make it worth something with that. You could make everything aerodynamic, but they won't.
Would be good to see manufacturers using alloy frames like they used to. Alloy frames with the same spec are some of the top end carbon bike would help with cheaper prices.
Good duo...
I've snapped / cracked several aluminium frames but never managed to break a carbon frame, so carbon for me rather than ally.
The intro was GOLDEN! loved it :D
I welcome 3d printing and A.I. engineering, while at the same time disdaining electronic components as a matter of taste. As long as the product is a badass bicycle, any method is fair game. I’m agnostic about materials, because it all depends on how they’re implemented
#captioncontest that look you get on your face when you realize you've been sitting in bird droppings for the entire ride
This Brose bike looks cool but it will be a nightmare to clean :/
Lolz well that was a riot
Can you please review the Norco Bigfoot Fat bike please and please tell us whether it can ride trails hard or not?
Well. It is a norco. It will be 1000 times better than anything from walmart if that helps. Inhavent ridden one so i cant give you anything from experience but norco makes good stuff.
Metal is alot greener since it can be recycled.... yes more of those!
So can carbon, though less easily. But aluminium is enormously polluting in ore extraction, processing & metal production. So the full end to end picture is not as simple
@@rupedog get your info straight bro...trek , yes the bycicle company, conducted the first study themselves... quote: The most interesting part of Trek's new report is a study completed on the carbon emissions created by the raw materials, manufacturing and transporting its bikes. Trek decided to investigate the carbon emissions for four of its most popular models (Madone, Marlin, Rail and Fuel EX), then broke each down by the different spec options. The biggest takeaway from this study is the significant impact carbon fibre can have on emissions, with carbon frames appearing to produce around three times higher emissions than their aluminium counterparts*.
To take the Fuel EX range as an example, the highest level alloy framed bike appears to produce ≈120 kg C02e on Trek's chart, way below the average in this test of 174 kg C02e. However, the base-level carbon Ful EX creates just above the average emissions level at ≈175 kg C02e. At the very top of the Fuel EX range, on a bike that contains a lot of carbon components alongside a carbon frame, the emissions rise even further to an estimated ≈225 kg C02e for the 9.9 X01 and XTR models. Incredibly, just the Fuel EX carbon frameset sits at around ≈80 kg C02e, meaning a carbon frame alone is not far off the emissions of a complete alloy Fuel EX 8 (≈120kg). www.pinkbike.com/news/carbon-frames-produce-more-emissions-than-alloy-and-more-key-points-from-treks-sustainability-report.html

Rich has decided to join Blake in his Amazon finds and indeed finds out something. He finds out why no one else ever volunteers!
Wierd question, but does anyone know what the golden brakes on severi´s mondraker (20:35) are?
They are Formula Cura 4
The Atherton bike could well be full lugged titanium. Why would you lug a aluminum frame when there's excellent hydroforming.
Yes it could be full Titanium? Anna guessed alloy because it's a different price point? 🤷♂
@@gmbnso is titanium.... Even higher!
Good point 😂
If 3d printed bikes are anything like the 3d printed saddles they’ll be 3 to 4 times more expensive than a traditional bike.
Anyone knows a type of fender that would clip under the seat rails? I can't find any decent ones they're all collar type...
*This was a great show btw, keep the coffee flowing 👍
Asssavers, was also a cheap version on CRC a couple years back, works ok.
Hello I am a lover of the show. could you cover a kavenz vhp16 please!
#captioncontest “Erm, that seat comes up faster than the second round at me pub”
#captioncontest "Oof. Why does my saddle smell even worse than cheese grips?"
#captioncontest - Rich makes a technical assessment on just how quick his dropper post returns
What’s a podcast? 😂😂😂
Only 20’ years late to the party!!!😂😂😂😂
All those holes in the frame are just making it a nightmare to clean.
Hacks and bodies ala Handel's messiah is the best hands down
Bodies... 😂
there is nothing wrong with a Tech Takeover. Liking this episode.
But how would you score them on a 1-10 on the important parts? Such as 🎶Hacks And Bodges song?
@@gmbn I think they can have a solid 9 out of 10. I’ve been really liking the Anna and Owen show recently.
Sorry, BUT Isn't high chain pivot for preventing the chain kick back??? What use is it on an emtb? The cranks are disconnected on down hill. Either I don't understand high pivot or It's engineering just to be cool but also dumb.
#Captioncontest
When the "landmine" you rode through flunk up to your back and saddle.
Haha 😂 🤣 🤣, moonraker 😂😂😂it's a MONDRAKER!!
On the Brose bike, won't be better to have two belts instead of chains?
A great observation David, so you would have belt-drive on your bike of the future?
@@gmbn I presently own an adventure/trekking bike with Gates carbon drive and a Rohloff gearbox hub, very satisfied!
@@gmbn for proper MTB use a cranckset based gearbox is probably more correct
Carbon bikes have a place. But not in a crash. Invisible damage can be catastrophic. Alloy or steel are way better for taking the knocks and everyday dinks an ordinary rider has

#Captioncontest Who are these nerds taking over my show?!
Carbon? Great for XC and if you have a deep wallet. Alloy is all I have ever considered for MTB, but a steel Hardtail (Pace for example) would be a dream of I could afford it.
As for 3D printed bikes, yes and no! There are many variabilities in that tech and unless it's done well and proven by ppl with bigger cahonies than me who ride hard, I'll bid my time!
Caption contest: when you catch a whiff on a ride and have an impromptu game of "mud or poo" 🤢
Is the global bike festival not happening anymore, last time there was an announcement by now.
#captioncontest After losing a bet to Anna, Rich’s forfeit is to lick Blake’s saddle.
The saddle looks SOOOOO uncomfortable! I'd rather stand up!
5:27 Not a good idea IMO, if you crash in the mud this will have mud in it.
No stunt mug being stunted, such a tease 😒

Basically those are motor bikes. Just get a moto cross bike - cheaper than these electric things.
What about that mug throw? I'm disappointed.
We're saving it for next week! ☕️💥
Yes more metal bikes bin the carbon bike you may as well call them plastic bikes as they are!
3D printing carbon is not possible ATM. Those carbon 3D printable materials are just a marketing buzz words.
#captioncontest Thank god that fart went through the hole ...
Was this the CBeebies edition of the DSS? I was waiting for a couple of puppets to pop up and do a segment.
Max Commencal says it best by not using carbon because "it's dirty", carbon can't be recycled.
What! No mug throwing? I think Cameraman Joey got away with it. 🤣 Love the surprise takeover!
