If BV was funny that’s one thing, but chaos is, well, the best way to get viewers to look away.
Bad pictures of bad bikes are “super nice” and first rate images of incredible bikes are “nice.” Meh, there’s better stuff to watch on Fridays.

Straight away all bikes must be DSO - drive side out. The cranks must be parallel with the ground right pedal forward. The tires must be aligned correctly with the badging on the tire and the stem must be at 12 o'clock or 6 O'clock. The bike should be in Little Big chainrings. No faff on the bike, not bags (Unless it is otherwise noted for that particular show, I.E. bike packing themed show) GMBN bottles are an exception. I am sure I could come up with a few more but this would be a good start. The reason I am so passionate about the Bike Vault is because it is my favorite part of the show. It is where we, us , the viewer can become part of the show and possibly go down as having a "Super" Nice Bike. I am sure there will be others that agree. Great show again and thank you for the shout out Boys. Cheers - M #BIKEVAULTSHOULD

I bought my dream bike, a Cannondale F700, in 1994 for $1400. I still have it today. It was, and still is, super light, highly capable, and wicked fast. I was a scroungy, broke college student, with a passion for the outdoors. The guys I rode with were hardcore, dedicated riders. We'd drive an hour into the mountains to find the most amazing rides. We rode in bear country, among giant conifers. We stopped to gaze over spellbinding vistas. These were the kinds of rides where if you fell to the right, you might need stitches. But if you fell to the left... well, you'd better have your will in good order (we didn't). That's what made mountain biking so great. You could be broke, and still get an amazing rush out in the wild. It was so far superior to the road bike scene, which was infested with arrogant lawyers, who rode slow, on $10k bikes that rarely saw the light of day. Boring. Sadly, that didn't last. Mountain biking hit the zeitgeist shortly thereafter. The industry started cashing in with both fists, tilting production toward plush downhill bikes for the weak and feeble, and raising prices as fast as they could. It got so stupid, I lost interest and found other ways to spend my time. I checked in recently on top tier Cannondale hardtails to see if any sanity has returned. I found prices ranging from $5k, for a middling bike, to $12k for something akin to my F700. Say what?! Do they honestly expect me to buy a hardtail for the price of a dune buggy??? It doesn't take an MBA to know that charging motorcycle prices for bicycles is a bad business model, but some industries have to learn the hard way. Too bad. Maybe by the time I retire, they'll get their heads screwed on straight again. I can hope at least.

Let alone building everything in Asia with cheap labor. For something as premium as a 12k bicycle, they should be built by well paid craftsman, which may not allow CEO’s and owners to live the excessive life they want, but would allow the economy’s and middle class to flourish in the US, UK and Australia who I believe are the biggest consumers of premium bicycles.

I've recently worked at larger multi-location local bike shops. There I discovered the owner at the beginning of the pandemic ordered nearly all the available stock from one of the major bike makers on a line of credit. I'm talking about a warehouse worth of bikes, thousand of bikes. Now he's siting of thousand of bike that have been superceded by newer models. He refuses to discount his stock, while unit sales plummet and his line of credit has come due. So if you weren't able to buy the bike you wanted during the pandemic, know its out there, in a warehouse, where you can still pay full price for it.

Yeah absolute idiot. Most of these retailers acted as if that spike in sales was gonna continue indefinitely. I have no experience in economics and yet can seem to grasp the concept that it was only going to last as long as lockdown better than businessmen in the trade who's job it is toactually know this. I have friends who work in home department businesses who bought entire buildings because they based their annual income from the 1st quarter of sales from that year. And are now laying off staff and almost bankrupt and saying "no one could've predicted the way this went".... Absolute morons.

Yes, a modern 2 or 4 stroke motorcycle engine is way more complex than any Ebike motor will ever be, a motorcycle engine also contains the transmission in a nice clean oil bath where we are still persevering with outdated derailleur controlled bicycle transmissions running in anything from sand to mud.

#BikeVaultShould It must follow the 7 rules of Super Nice as set by former GMBN/GMBN Tech host Doddy which are as follows-
1- Be an MTB (Gravel bikes do NOT count)
    2- Be drive side
3- Pedals level at the 3 o'clock position
4- Tyre logos with valves at the 12 o'clock position
5- If a dropper post is fitted then it must be half-mast
6- NO HUMANS (Unless under 10 years old)
    7- Show all the bike
Bonus points MAY or MAY NOT be awarded for animals, colour co-ordination, parallel chain alignment, caked in mud, homemade/handbuilt.
FINALLY- If you think your bike is Super Nice, then it is! Ride it and enjoy it. That's what it's all about!
Life's motto "The less I care what people think, the easier life becomes. Just don't be a d*ck!"

You'll need a better crank arms though. But there's also plenty of brake rotors, hydrualic brake set and it's better and thicker than sram and shimano. They basically counterfeited hope caliper, TRP levers and the pads are so much better and cheaper too.

Going along with the "recession" thing and as a contrast to the upcoming video on "expensive bikes", how about a video showcasing some of the mid-tier gear? That is probably where the value is for customers, not high end, not entry level. Many people look it over, though,"because it is not the best thing I've seen everywhere, so it must be bad". Maybe compare it with the top end and the bottom end as well and not only in speed, but also the subjective "feel" of the bikes ?

Every bike over 4000 should let you pick bar width, stem length and crank length, so it actually fits. They all use common cockpit brands, this hasn’t changed for 30 years. First company that does it gives back the new owner 500 straight away - and then be ahead of the competition from a value perspective.

What I think the bike industry needs to do is
A- cut their prices so things are more affordable.
B- Stop putting out new bikes for a couple of years. Just stick what they are already producing. We don't need a new version of a bike they already produce every year. It ridiculous to keep doing it because generally, the changes are so small that the average person doesn't notice them. And with every iteration, they raise the price.

If you do BOGO, then you only need 5,000 sales and you clear out the inventory and get the same amount of money coming in.

Not really, you can get a decent mountain-bike for around £1000/$1200 these days - it's only the higher end bikes which start to cost silly money... but those are still a lot cheaper than an equivalent Ducati or a Porsche.
You could make the same comparison to any high-end sport's equipment, or even a year's worth of groceries...

    • @Chris_1980
      @Chris_1980 Před 5 měsíci

@@jmo2752 i hear what you are saying. Yet however, even with the higher end bikes, how can a company justify and expect riders and consumers to spend upwards to $15,000 on a mountain bike? Then there is the warranty side of things, and some mountain bike company’s don’t have a decent warranty program. And through my searches on this. The only Mountain bike company that has somewhat of a decent warranty program for all situations is YETI Cycles. Now compare it to a high end model of let’s say a Yamaha YZ450f cost is $9,000 - $10,000 max, and warranty is 5 years on 90% of anything that goes on bike.
And the cheaper mountain bikes that I have seen are usually on the used market, and those prices are somewhat unjustified as well, especially when you are not sure what the previous owner is not telling you. And on the used side of things in my neck of the woods in Canada, the cheapest I have found at the $1200 mark is a a 2011 norco shore that was in pretty rough condition.

The industry needs to move away from the new range every year model, especially at the higher end. If you have spent five grand and up on a bike, you don't need to upgrade the following year and the quality/technology of the bike alone won't have changed that much in twelve months. My Rallon is a 2021 and three years later I still can't see a reason to buy a new one. But Orbea will still release one every year and spend a ton marketing it.

Good point - although then the manufacturers will be accused of only offering 'bold new graphics/colours' - see comments about Orange above.
I think the real issue (as you point out) is why is everyone changing their bikes each year? Unless it (or parts of it) is worn out, just keep on riding it!

I bought a bike in 2008 that was considered pretty high up in spec and quality for that particular international brand (which is still going today), just over £2k. Today something of comparable standing looks like £6-£8k. Even a hardtail around £1.5k with xtr would today be miles higher…no one’s reinventing the wheel and they work as well as they did back then today - despite geometry changes.
I guess we could consider canyon however, decent bikes and not insanely priced for some modest models (ok so there are some high prices but lots are affordable).

To be fair, most products are going to have a 100% mark-up from manufacturer to retailer these days, so once you cut out the distributor and retailer's margin, then by selling direct to consumer Kona can shift [overstock] inventory and still break-even I suspect... The question is does anyone really want/need two of the same brand/similar model bike?

I think the whole problem comes down to the sole fact that bike’s aren’t affordable nowadays. A lot of riders now want an e-bike which is £4k+ for a decent one. Even Amish bikes are more than they’ve ever been. This wasn’t a thing 10-15 years ago. Yes, bikes have moved on big time but we’re now seeing the downside of companies asking for way too much money for their product. Also, the fact you couldn’t buy a bike for love or money during Covid has led so many companies in the wrong direction thinking they can double their stock when in reality now they may be selling less than pre Covid.

That was a huge customer barrier and reeled in trips to the alps and other associated spending. 2008 onwards spending power dropped massively due to huge inflation. Tory years have been especially hard and brexit! JFC. I just stopped Travelling. I want standard Frames for ebikes to reduce E waste and for them to be sold without motor so you can choose. Stores got greedy as they sold loads of bikes and the Manufacturers got greedy because they saw what shops were taking!
