It's the first Halloween film to bring back Jaime Lee Curtis, except for Halloween 2 (1981), Halloween 7, and Halloween 8, but finally, the series has brought back John Carpenter in some capacity for the first time, except for Halloween 2 (1981), and Halloween 3. It's also the first Halloween film to ignore the previous films in the franchise's timeline, except for Halloween 3, Halloween 4, which ignores Halloween 3, Halloween 7, which ignores Halloween 3, Halloween 4, Halloween 5, and Halloween 6, but aside from all that it's a totally fresh and new start for the Halloween franchise!

But are they REALLY random? We see these are friends of Allyson, the
granddaughter of Laurie. The original movie was random in that he picked laurieand then her friends. He fixated on them, like a serial killer does, so they weren't
      random.
That's my problem with the whole second act. He just randomly appears and
kills characters related to our heroine. It seems like the filmmakers had a great
third act idea and built from there, and made a great first act to supplement, but
then had a second act that really went nowhere and used character recognition
to fuel the kills rather than logic. I was excited to see them respect the original,
but then ultimately they didn't respect micheal myers and what he really was in
      the first film.

@@murph8907 "...He fixated on them, like a serial killer does, so they weren't random."
^Bingo. Michael's MO in the original is not random or he wouldn't have singled out and fixated on a particular character and set up his own little haunted house for her decorated with corpses. There's definitely some subtext going on there, i.e. a subliminal connection between Michael and Laurie. Michael and Laurie are paralleled in certain ways. They are both watchers. They are mindful and observant of their surroundings and that is why they see each other. That is why Laurie proves to be a formidable opponent to Myers. There's more going on there than a surface level reading of the movie suggests.
