- The new Ford Ranger has been released and there has been a lot of debate about price, styling, and powertrain. This Ranger XLT is powered by the 2.3L EcoBoost engine that is producing 270 HP & mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. What this Ford Ranger also features is a new option just made available: Black Appearance Package. Let me show you all the details of this option that goes beyond just some black paint. I own it. The Lariat edition. It runs like a sports car with plenty of power. The price is a little at the high end and never had any mechanical problems with it now that I put 26,000 miles on it . I would highly recommend it .

I got a XLT Ranger Sport 2WD after my 2019 Tacoma got totaled. And the little Ranger Hauls. Sport mode you don’t realize how quick it is until you look down and you’re going 30 over.
Nice review Joe. 35k for a 4x2 mid size pick-up? I don't understand how they can justify that price. I feel like most new cars nowadays are 5 to 10k over what they should be. This truck should be in the mid 20ks.

Eh, it's not like Tacomas are cheap either. A TRD offroad 4x4 Taco runs about $38,500 MSRP, and that's with no options. At least you can get the FX4 package for the Ranger on the base model. You can even get the rear locker separate. Toyota won't give a rear locker unless it's a TRD Offroad or a TRD Pro.
@@Maniac742 For sure... Tacoma's are not cheap. But just look at their resale value. If I had to buy a pickup it would be Toyota, Ford and then GM. I don't really get the whole pick-up truck thing. I drove one for work for years. Such a boring drive. I prefer sports cars... So much more fun and engaging to drive.

Ok, I get it better lighting from leds however if you live in an area with snow and ice then you understand my point where halogen lights help keep your lights from getting covered with snow and ice so to make leds standard is not beneficial to everyone, but i love the ranger especially in this color

I feel like with the black out package this is a really attractive truck on the outside. On the interior I feel like it's evidence of something we're seeing in so many new cars and trucks in today's world. You just can't get everything for a decent price. My jaw hit the ground when I saw this thing didn't have a push button start for $36k lol. All the plastic reminds me of the plastic in my '19 Fiesta ST, but I can forgive them for that... it's a $22k vehicle vs. this.
Those couple negatives I listed wouldn't discourage me from buying the truck... It just shows you have to always have to sacrifice something. Thanks for the awesome review as always! A lot of this isn't a Ford issue, it's just the world we live in. That motor/tranny combo btw is GREAT on this thing!

wow! its ford ranger xlt excellent design! we have that unit here in Philippines but ive seen the difference of local version and u.s version of ranger xlt its very big difference because full package compare to local asia version i love it very agressive look and great performance a 10 speed a\t transmission to increase a powerfull speed and toughnest off road stabilty
Hey Joe. I enjoy your reviews. I just bought a 2019 XLT Black with the chrome package. Love the Truck and I didn't pay near MSRP. I first drove a 4 cylinder Tacoma and was not impressed at all (no power) and I did not like the seating being so low to the floor. I think the Ranger is far and away the best in the segment even at full price. My next purchase will be the Lariat.

@@kris_roro hi Chris. I have had no issues at all. It's a great machine. All the power you need when you need it. Fun to drive.
But it does have cargo lights up high.. also it use to have 6 tie downs in the bed. The middle ones were removed mid 2019. You can buy the tie downs from parts and install them in the extra threaded holes.

a few months after this review, Ford Performance came out with a tuner for this truck that ups the hp to 320 and the torque to 380. I invested and WOW what a difference and because it's made by Ford, it doesnt affect the warrany

They did it right with the ranger 2.3 eco and livernoise performance has a tuner for it that increases the hp on a 93 tune 70 hp and 100 tq roughly

The blackout package is the icing on the cake. I would probably get this as is, if I got a truck. The irony is growing up, I would not be caught dead buying a Ford. Now I am very hard pressed to even consider a new GM vehicle, no matter how nice they are. The only other consideration for me would be a Toyota Tacoma, but here in Hawaii, EVERYBODY has a Tacoma. I like the N/A engine, and the TRD options, but it is a high risk theft truck, and friends have bern getting rustvon the roof of their vehicles, like the new 4Runners, and the local dealership service department has been getting a bad rep for running around trying to fix a major operational problem with a friends 4Runner ignition and electrical system, trying to put the blame of non relevant add on parts. Plus, the Ford dealership is in a very convenient location down the hill from where I live, a block away from my church, where I have my own key, desk, computer, restroom, kitchen, etc. To go to, if I want to wait for my vehicle being serviced, and right near the major street where I use.
Like some of the previous new Rangers you featured, this would probably be almost perfect, in that grey or blue. And the blackout package, running boards and pushbutton entry. Even with a physical key at this price point, it has its advantage over a keyless pushbutton start, especially reliability and security. I have no problem with the mirrors and door handles, as long as the latter are not cheap and flimsy and break over time like some other ones. The mirror can be changed to a nicer one, but the look is functional. Outside, everything is fine for me, except maybe the tailpipe. 2WD is perfect and great clearance and handling. The utilitarian interior is okay for a truck at this price point for all the other things it has, but I agree with the cloth door panels. My main zonk is no CD player and auxiliary audio input jack, if it doesn't have one. The fuel economy is reasonable for a truck like this, power great, and though it's a turbo, probably much more reliable than GM, and most other brands. Plus, I don't thrash my vehicles, and now know the TLC needed for turbos. And two hood struts, even though the rod does not bother me too much, except maybe getting in the way while working under the hood, which is not a biggie.
Overall looks, performance, handling, reliability, fuel economy, and such is great. I just would need a locking hard cover for the bed and a few other things. Overall, a great truck, package, and equipment. Getting a truck and a accessories, especially for a 4WD can skyrocket the cost, but it's great that it already has a bedliner. Years ago, I would opt for a camper shell, but not anymore. I see a lot of new Rangers in the dealership lot right by the main road when I pass by often.

@@RaitisRides I probably would get legal snake ceramic window tint, black metal license plate frames and clear covers as usual, weather mats, and maybe get a Flowmaster exhaust system, either one they made specifically for the Ranger, or get their input to make a system at the top local exhaust shop here, which also is in my neighborhood. I wish more vehicles still had CD players and/or an auxiliary audio input jack. But as long as it has a data USB jack, I would get that $500 Tascam CD and Cassette to USB flash drive player and recorder to make putting my music on those thumb drives without having to mess with iTunes and a computer. It's available at Crutchfield and other professional audio vendors that carry Tascam. Good to have if you want all your favorite music in these modern vehicles.

The black out appearance package definitely enhances the sporty look of the Ranger, but I am more looking forward to seeing the new Dodge Dakota when it comes out, and the new Hyundai pick up when it is introduced also. It looks amazing as a concept.

Does the ranger have the most rear seat room of the mid size trucks? Need my kids front facing seats to fit. Might have to step up to a f150, but I just love mid size trucks.

That's the problem the way they made the T6 Ranger in the US it only looks good when it's blacked out. I had a T6 Ranger overseas which had a gunmetal kind of bluish green color and it was beautiful but there's no good color choices here and the bumpers even though they're stronger really make this truck look ugly. The only thing that saves it is when you black it all out and I cannot buy a black truck not even remotely so.

Seems like Ford could have made this so much nicer but decided to make it cheap and then charge an obscene amount for it. A better quality interior, LED lamps, painted door handles, mirrors, include some body side molding, bed lighting, better tie downs etc, power slider rear window AND drop that price down about 7 grand. Then they might have something interesting.

Must Have? A "Blackout package"?
The 4x2s are only two inches lower that the four wheel drive versions and that's only because of the tire and rim packages.
My '02 was short enough that I could just look over it. My '19, I have to look through the windows and can barely reach the floor of the deeper bed over the sides.
Here's your "must have:" Running boards. I had to carry a step-stool for my wife when I first got mine, until I was able to find a set of reasonably priced running boards that looked good on it.
And Electric Blue looks much better on my XL. And I got it away from the dealership under $29,000 out the door.
Let's fire up that 4 banger.....Whoosh....whoooosh........whooosh.

For me, it’s either the ford ranger dot that has CarPlay and bsm but no push start or a 2019 Tacoma rd spor or off road with push start and bsm, but no carplay

I’ve always liked the fact that you can lock your keys in car and use a keypad to get it back out, my ford five hundred had this, I just bought a 2016 Ford Taurus, it has a keypad, but if I put the keys on the trunk or anywhere in the car it constantly beeps to let me know the keys are still in the vehicle... defeats the purpose, don’t see anything in the manual on how to stop this...
Nice looking truck. I checked this one out myself. In the segment the way the back seats fold I thought it had the worst storage fold design. I also like to drive my truck with that back window open and for that to me manual is not cool. On the positive I thought the drivers seat was very comfortable. Nice review Joe.

So it’s okay for a Tacoma and the Colorado to be 45.000 dollars but not the Ranger. Or do people just not realize the cost of midsized trucks. And no you can’t get a full size for the same price if you go option for option. Unless you catch an end of year sale. There’s about 6 to 8 thousand dollar difference in msrp. They knocked 3900.00 off the msrp on mine. I looked at both and compared prices.

Luckily the Ford dealerships around where I live have awesome rebates. Most of the highest trim Lariats you can get for around 38 to 39k which is either right on point or better than other compact trucks around here. But I've seen pricing on some out of state rangers and they climb high with no rebates 😬
@@tylerharvey8299 well it's about time that's what I always figured the lariats were at least 5,000 over Market when you compared with the Tacomas and Colorado's.
@@HiPlains1 no doubt. Alot of them around here have up to 7k in rebates so it definitly makes them seem like a solid contender. However without rebates the top trim is just unjustified
I probably would have bought a Lariat if I had rebates like that I ended up getting a frontier pro 4X Nissan back in February because there was no way I was going to pay $47,000. A few years back I own an overseas T6 Ranger with the 5-cylinder diesel and that was a great truck so they're pretty nice product actually like the overseas ranger better and the Diesels are great.

Went into a dealership yesterday for a 2020 Ford ranger xlt 4x4. It’s the end of the year so I thought I could get some good deal. Dealer said after taxes and fees. The out the door price would be $42,727.... and they kept on telling about these 84 months 4.90 apr. 585.48 per month. After paying it off the truck will cost me $49,180. Freaking blood suckers. So I asked for 20k out the door, and they thought I was crazy.
IMO, the new mid sized trucks are the perfect size. Full size trucks have just gotten too large for me. My 2020 Ranger will haul my 700cc ATV along with a generator and cooler with no problem.

People complaining about the price are dumb... for one, who the hell pays the msrp price?! I bought my 19 ranger xlt for $25,101. 4door, 2wd, apple car play, duel climate control, the 17in black rims, lane keep assist, blind spot and front and rear parking sensors and forward collision warning/breaking, power folding Mirrors.

cost about 15 k at most to build the most loaded option package and trim level. they selling for over double. MSRP is rigged BS and works with dealerships on screwing you out of as much money as possible. PLease explain how this 4 cylinder cost is basically the same as a F-150. If you arent charging nearly 70k for a standard F-150 then its all BS what they are asking for these smaller body, smaller engine trucks. Also, been wondering this for a long time. In fords, whats the difference between the XL and XLT? Both are cloth trims. Only a top level trim offers the leather like a Lariat? I really want a new truck like a colorado or ranger, but i need 4x4 and some towing up to 6k pounds. But the prices of new stuff keep me just out of range. I have never owned a new car. Been used ones my whole life. I think I could make a new one last my entire life if given the chance,

Go to a full size for that. This is a midsize with a crew cab. You can get it with a 6 foot bed but no crew cab.
Why isn’t the ford badge blacked out
I would like to see the badge the same color as the vehicle , it time for Ford advance to the next level. I believe that all of the Ford's make all their vehicles in line with the needs of the drivers . Start adding more and more technical support I want my Ford to do everything I need as a driver and make only the highest level and no more base model like making everyone a top level models.
I want my Ford to have everything .I want all my seats to be electrical , heated , reclinenable and soft touch and with an arm rest on both sides. I would like my Ford to have every option

That Code Pad looks very out of place.
Ranger drives very good. Very good response. Problem with them is the price vs interior quality. Too much plastic. Headlights on the XLT need at least some LED DRL accents. For the price, majority of people jump to an f150 STX

Test drove the Chevy Colorado ZR2 for the 5th time today. I need to pull the trigger. Im a sick man. 45K and still uses a key 🙄
I would reconsider they've had a lot of problems with that 8-speed transmission for the longest time they do have a new fix for it now but I have a lot of pause and still people are having issues with it unless you get the Duramax with a six-speed I would stay far clear of GM. Don't believe me just look up Colorado 8-speed shutter and torque converter failures been going on since 2015. Any of the rest will provide a lot more reliability and for these kinds of prices you don't want to be a sucker for GM.
Transmission is jusk I have 2018 Colorado v6 8 speed. Nothing but problems they keep fixing only works 2 or 3 thousand miles then shuddering again!
That is a heavy duty off road capable truck.

I prefer plastic over a leather wrapped console etc ... but I would want high quality (thick, industrial strength) plastic. Something like Polypropylene copolymer used in Pelican cases.
And Ford etc should really switch over to weatherproof waterproof marine upholstery especially for SUVs, truck, etc ... cloth and leather are obsolete.

One thing missing on this truck is having that instant throttle response. Definitely have some turbo lag off the line (as witnessed here) which is impossible to avoid unless you go to supercharging. As old as it might be the Nissan VQ 40 V6 has allot more torque off the line. Not liking the fake motor sounds being piped through the speakers. That is a Big ZONK. This engine sounds very weak but faking the sounds is wrong. After market exhausts systems only produce a horrible drone sound. The only decent sounding mid size motor is again the VQ 40. It has a good throaty sound. And the last pure truck engine in the segment.
